I’m not dumb, you know. I got into a prestigious university at the top of my class. Seriously… What’s a high-achiever?

Did you just see that? No, I didn’t push through with physical strength, but with brainpower.

… I won’t back down until you acknowledge it.

So basically, the MC's main struggle is that she woke up one day and had something similar to massive brain damage, goes from 200 IQ genius to a swingset licker overnight.

And it's interesting to read how they describe becoming dumber. Rather than just being s*upid all the sudden and doing s*upid things, instead thinking too hard causes her debilitating pain, and she quickly gets used to avoiding thoughts. For example there's a scene right at the start where she tries to add two four digit numbers in her head and... more>> literally just about faints and collapses in the street from the headache it causes. So she becomes a 'no thoughts, head empty' airhead in a really believable way - it doesn't just like, delete her intelligence, instead it hurts too much and she stops applying herself.

BUT in return, she gains near super human athletic talents. But not muscles - she gets the kind of althetic skills that having a different brain might provide. Incredible kinetic vision, flawless hand eye coordination, extremely precise fine motor skills and near precognitave spatial awareness. Dead on aim. Keen intuition like an apex predator might have. All the mental, perception type athletic skills.

I think it's really cool how the author makes the getting dumber transition sound so plausible and follow a kind of consistent logic all throughout. And how the brawn part of "all brawn no brains" she picks up is also mostly a mental change.

And at the same time she's struggling with her cognitive abilities dropping off a cliff, she's simultaneously dealing with an involuntary s*x change and all the mental and physical consequences of waking up a girl one day. She has to buy pads and hair ties. Her taste buds changed and she no longer enjoys her favorite foods. She now has an insatiable sweet tooth. Her hormones are all out of whack and her different feelings subtly cause personality changes. She struggles with impulse control when it used to be easy (hormones are super important for decision making!), getting addicted to video games and losing the ability to manage her finances (she blows it all on her sweet tooth). Now a woman, her social group changes because she's more comfortable hanging out with other girls. Guys leer at her on the street. She loses job opportunities but also gains different ones. Etc etc

The story sneaks in dozens and dozens of "her life is different because she's a woman now" moments and slips them in so casually you don't even notice. That's something not a lot of gender bender stories don't even try to do, usually they might as well have just written a girl from the start, right? The bending tag is often pretty pointless. But this one really does something with it, legitimately exploring the gender changes and doing it gracefully.

I wouldn't be confident enough in my irl knowledge to claim that it's realistic, or even accurate to how this would go irl. But I will claim that it is *convincing*. Everything is presented in a way that's believable, logical, and sounds plausible, with plenty of well thought out details to really sell it. And all so smoothly you don't even think about it it while you're reading. I think the author did a really good job portraying how she adapts to her core identity changing in various ways, and just wanna leave a review to point out and appreciate the craftsmanship. <<less

An actual synopsis for those curious:

The protagonist is a rather smart individual who has got various awards and whatnot for their academic prowess, one day they wake up as someone completely different, and everything seems to change alongside them to reflect that, as if they've always been that person, I.e. Pictures and documents change to show their new body and name. Their new body seems to fall under the "brawny idiot" category and they have difficulties doing things they used to be able to do with ease.

I'd like to preface this review by saying that I actually really enjoyed the novel's early chapters and would have rated it a solid 10/10 if it continued in that direction.

A basic synopsis is that our MC (originally male, quite smart, not particularly blessed physically) suddenly wakes up as a girl who is significantly less blessed intellectually but made up for with a huge buff in her physique with a side effect of some new hobbies and altered tastes. I loved how the author approached the MC's identity dissonance.

Spoiler

For instance, our MC (as of chapter 30) is still in heavy denial that she loves her bear dolls or that she is a gaming addict lol. She also tries desperately to cling on to her past academic achievements from when she hadn't transformed yet e.g. by mentioning she was a top Korea University student.

[collapse]

This is an aspect that I feel isn't focused/elaborated on enough in GB works and it's done excellently here.

Also, how the author wrote in the drastic drop in cognitive capabilities was great too. The idea that, while our MC could still theoretically do the same calculations or similar thought processes as pre-transformation, it hurts her head to do so and takes a much longer time than it would have previously. Meanwhile, her past acquired knowledge is still intact (e.g. when she was asked some history/trivia questions by a viewer and answered perfectly). It makes it feel somewhat more natural. (as natural as waking up as a girl one morning could be, I suppose)

The earlier chapters (I'd like to say around the first 20?) focused primarily on these changes and how our MC learns of each of them and adapts and/or makes changes to her daily routine and spending habits to accommodate for these new things in her life. It's a slice of life without much real plot development or anything, but it was still a great read as a GB and SoL enjoyer and I would've personally liked for it to continue in this direction and have her discover more new things about her new self or dive deeper into her newly acquired hobbies.

With all that said, why did I give it 4/5 stars? It's because the primary focus shifts quite quickly from the genderbending and other transformations/alterations to the MC to a focus on livestreaming content (around the chapter 20 mark or so I would say). I'm aware that it is one of the tags in the work, but the synopsis doesn't exactly give you an idea of how much livestreaming is actually involved in the plot itself. As of chapter 30, it seems it will be almost entirely the focus of the novel from here on out.

It'a quite disappointing for me personally as the livestreaming content doesn't interest me all that much. It's not really something unique or new nor is it particularly well-done here. (off the top of my head, I can think of at least 3 other korean GB novels that also have livestreaming as a main focus... What is up with that?) It also takes away from the possibility to explore more of the aspects I mentioned earlier as streaming and gaming takes up a huge amount of her time.

Spoiler

It's mentioned she logged around 300+ hours of play time within a month in the game. Assuming she started playing on the 1st day of a 30 day month, that's an average of 10h/day for someone who still has a part-time job to go to on top of that... Pure insanity.

[collapse]

Also, honestly, I have absolutely no interest in (what seems to be) a League of Legends type of game that's described in this novel. Half the explanations go in one ear and out the other for me. I really only went in wanting to read a GB novel, not gaming tactics for a LoL ripoff.

The interactions with her stream viewers actually aren't half-bad, I'll give the author that. However, I would've much preferred to see more focus on her irl interactions which feel more personal and not so superficial as the viewer chats.

Spoiler

e.g. I really enjoyed the chapter where our MC spent time at the arcade with her co-worker Lee Daram or the chapters where she goes to the the doll shop and interacts with the boy who works there and makes the dolls. These chapters alone were much more interesting than all the chapters where she livestreamed combined.

[collapse]

Alas, it seems that isn't the direction the author is taking the work. Perhaps it's a little early to judge as it seems the raws (as of the time of writing) have about 118 chapters and, maybe, the focus does shift back to the GB and other transformation aspects later. However, skimming up to chapter 33, (latest TL available on NU) I can't foresee that and I'll have to leave a 4 star rating. If I had known how much livestreaming and gaming would've taken center stage, I probably wouldn't have bothered with starting at all.

Tl;dr - Livestreaming is a big part of this novel. If you like that content, great! Read on. If you don't (like me), don't bother. You will only experience disappointment. <<less

A cute slice-of-life story. Despite obvious signs of dysphoria, the MC just doesn't give a damn and instead just easily give in to his/her strange new urges.

This novel is a pretty good slice of life.

The MC woke up one to find everything about him got reversed. His gender became a girl's, he hates what he used to love, he love what he used to hate. As he used to be an arrogant genius, after getting reversed, he became an idiotic airhead with incredible physical abilities, which caused him (she?) to accidentally do cute things without him realizing. However, the author handled her decrease in intelligence in way that doesn't make the novel frustrating.

After her reversal, she's... more>> introduced to the world of livestreaming on VR League of Legends, which seemed to be what the main stage the novel is taking at the moment. The livestreaming part of this novel is quite generic. The viewer interactions with the MC is fun but gets boring after a while. I don't really see how the livestreaming plot can develope the story, most of the viewer interactions are just them commenting on MC doing crazy stuff or donating money for the MC to do something on stream.

Most of the comedy in the novel revolves around the MC arguing with her viewers or other people on the topic of her intelligence, as she refuses to acknowledge she's become dumber.

Overall, the story is enjoyable to read for me. <<less

As other reviewers have already said, the novel is good slice of life. Unlike other genderbender novels, it actually goes into the gender dysphoria aspect quite well, without going full on depression and trauma mode. MC isn't a very sensitive guy, so she just acts dazed for most of it.

Personally I really enjoyed the LOL aspect even without playing the game. Or games, really. I glossed over most of the terms and just focused on the 'feel' of how the game goes, the energetic atmosphere, and excitement, instead of specific... more>> skills, builds, and play. It was really fun.

On the other side, it was also not as healing as I thought it would. I quit in the middle of reading it cuz my soul pained too much at the thought of the MC losing their intelligence. As a Korean girl who's aiming for the same school, it hurts. It really, really hurts. I would rather wake up as the ugliest man alive than lose my cognitive abilities like she did.

I hope she will find a way to power through the pain and regain her cognitive abilities, or at least she'll understand how debilitating it is for her. Currently she doesn't really seem to care, and I'm not getting any hints to any improvement on her condition. It's frustrating.

Still a really fun novel that I enjoyed a lot. Might pick it up again after I lose my student status and no longer have study trauma. <<less
