I raise my sword and swing.

I cut down a thief charging at me with a dagger.

I rely on my helmet to withstand the heavy blow of a club-wielding bandit.

I slash down enemies in succession, breaking their morale, and pursue the ones who flee.

I strip the clothes and weapons from the dead.

I survived. At least for today.

From the title and synopsis (which is honestly more like a teaser in this case), I expected it to be a dark fantasy, with a lot of death, killing, and tragedy, and possibly rising through the ranks of brutal and frankly barbaric mercenaries.

And while there are fights that involve killing, it's not quite as brutal as expected, nor as morally questionable.

The actual situation is that the MC is reincarnated into a game that seems to be a mix of tactics, RPG, and mercenary management. He starts out on his own... more>> with good armour and a good weapon, and gradually builds up his reputation and the number of mercenaries under his command.

... and so far, all of those have been female. This isn't a full harem story or anything (so far there hasn't been any hint that the MC plans on starting a romance with any of them, let alone all), but all the characters that are capable enough to recruit to his party happened to be women.

I'm assuming the author has some preference in that regard, but it does feel a bit out of place.

While he's well-equipped and physically strong, he's not trained or experienced in actually using his sword efficiently, but as a veteran of the game, he's an excellent tactician and has a solid strategy to build up his mercenary group in the long term.

So overall the story is somewhere in between the expectations set by the title and most of the light-hearted isekai novels.

Since a lot of the story is focused on fighting and logistics, characters take a step back in terms of importance, but while the characters aren't necessarily deep, they're written well enough to be interesting.

This wasn't quite what I was looking for, but it was close enough to keep me reading, and I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. I look forward to seeing if the author has any plans of adding male mercenaries at some point, and whether they'll be significant characters or just names to fill the numbers. <<less
