Why are there more and more beautiful girls around me?!

In contrast to a lot of webnovels, this one had a general outline from the start, causing it to have a more traditional structure; in general, that means that the 1st arc will be weaker, as things are just starting to get ramped up and characters are being introduced. However, it does mean that there is character development, a put together plot, and things from the beginning that tie in together in later stages. So, in regards to the other review, I do think it was unfair to rate it... more>> at only 16 chapters. I have also enjoyed Eldest Martial Sister, and I also found the first few chapters to be weak, while enjoying it a lot later on. The plot does keep up in terms of constantly mentioning pushing down other characters, but real emotions and interactions are cultivated.

I personally liked this story a lot, usually with 500+ chapter chinese novels, it starts to feel like the story is dragging itself on in order to extract more money, but the pacing was really good in this one imo, everything had it's own purpose. The harem is a Chinese harem, in that each arc generally added 1 or 2 people into it (which I don't prefer), but I don't think it went too far in those terms. It's easy-going basically the whole way through, with moments of severity, but it fit the vibe and character of the story.

Related rant:

My gripe with a lot of stories nowadays is that they want to be edgy and have a selfish protagonist, since everyone says that they're sick of "mary sue" types, and yet no one actually wants to read that for an overarching story. People like selfless protagonists, the plots that they bring, and the devotion that they can get from supporting characters, a story feels more full bodied that way. This leads to cop outs, with systems, misunderstandings, or other insane plot devices in order to create that kind of story with a "better" protagonist. Usually they fail to create something interesting, sometimes it works out in a comedic way, or via character development into a more selfless person, but ultimately it's all still a cop out. In my opinion this story does not fall into that trap, which I was worried about at first; the protagonists personality does get to shine both in the system choices and other plot decisions, she had her own appealing character that isn't just dragged along by the system.

Miscellaneous Spoilers:

Spoiler

The MC only officially gets together with the seven stars (with the way the plot treated them it was 6 stars lol), and Su Ling is portrayed as the main wife. There are a lot of other characters who covet her, and I imagine that in their happy ending at some point a wider harem will be worked out. Due to being a cultivation novel, there are a lot of characters introduced, and it does make it so that screentime is an issue, a lot of people got done dirty. It is a cultivation world though, she should split herself up and hand herself out as reparations, there's plenty of time. I would've enjoyed some extras that explored that and a few other character relationships, alas.

The author at some point mentioned that the story could've diverged at a certain point, where her identity would be revealed earlier, leading to a more somber story. I do think it could've had a stronger ending that way, I always like MCs to suffer, but the lighthearted path they chose wasn't weak, and it's appealing for the web novel format. A lot of plot beats would've hit a lot harder if the MC had suffered at the end, some connections would be stronger, and it would've been an interesting path to explore. In an ideal world where everything didn't take time and effort to do, I would've been happy to see both available.

Hi hi, translator san here~

Couple notes

1) It is harem but it's not immediately obvious, the MC interacts with a new girl every arc though

... more>> 2) MC is pretty strong

3) Not many fuwa fuwa interactions as you expect but you can tell they care about each other

4) A lot of the plot is focused on the overall world, cultivation, and fighting

5) Overall a long grind plot, there's a lot of girls and they're all somewhat unique

6) It doesn't have the idiotic all the girls merge into 1 ending

I think any yuri lovers who also want action or want an MC that can actually fight should read this. Even if you are not interested in yuri, there are not many immediately obvious romantic interactions all the time or in your face so it is pretty good for reading just for the female MC and xianxia aspect. <<less

Basically a copy of The Eldest Martial Sister Gave Up Treatment (or Eldest Sister for short)

The villainess died, got turned back in time but instead of herself re-living her life, it's MC (a modern man) who just somehow possessed her body and her memory.

The writing is fine, not that quality but good enough to read if you want some entertainment.

However, it's extremely similar to Eldest Sister but it's not as good or as engaging as Eldest Sister, so I stopped reading by chapter 16. The reason why I said... more>> it's not as good is because:

  • it copied the system that forces MC to do evil things like in Eldest Sister, but the system really came out of nowhere, with no logical explanation. As least in Eldest Sister, the system makes sense because the world was based on a game.
  • the system
    Spoiler

keeps on telling MC to push other female characters down and fck them, even when that's really not in character of the villainess.

    [collapse]
  • the other options the system gives are really basic and you can really feels that the author only wants the MC to choose one specific option because that option is usually the unexpected/forced comedic one.
The only real difference between this and Eldest Sister is that while Eldest Sister is more about the misunderstandings about Bai Lian, this one seems to double down on the terribleness of the villainess and using that to capture the love interests instead.

Anyway, I only read up to chapter 16 so my review can be rather lacking (the series has like, 1120 chapters or sth). Maybe it will be different from Eldest Sister the more it goes, so give it a try if you want. <<less
