Yan Shixun had roamed far and wide, making a modest living by helping people exorcise ghosts and dispel evil spirits. He enjoyed a carefree life doing odd jobs for a little extra cash.

However, just when he was living his life on his own terms, his rich third-generation friend who was shooting a variety show couldn’t find enough artists to participate and cried out, “Brother Yan, if you don’t come, I’ll die here!”

Yan Shixun: “…”

He looked at the amount his friend was offering and reluctantly agreed.

As a result, Yan Shixun unexpectedly became an internet sensation!

In the travel variety show that eliminates the worst performance guest, a haunted villa in the woods echoed with ghostly cries at midnight, vengeful spirits surrounded and threatened the guests. Possessed by eerie creatures in a desolate mountain temple, the entire team of artists was on the brink of danger. Sinister forces in rural villages harnessed dark sorcery to deceive and ensnare…

As the viewers watched the travel variety show transform into a horror show, they were shocked and screamed in horror. Yet, amidst this, Yan Shixun remained composed, a gentleman with an extraordinary presence.

Yan Shixun plucked a leaf and turned it into a sword, piercing through the evil spirit’s chest. With a burning yellow talisman in hand, he forced the malevolent entity to flee in panic. With a single command, he sent the Ten Yama Kings quaking, instilling fear in the Yin officers.

The audience stared in astonishment.

However, Yan Shixun calmly dealt with the ghosts and spirits while confidently explaining to the camera with a disdainful expression.

He looked pessimistic and said, “Read more, believe in superstitions less. What ghosts? Everything is science.”

The enlightened audience: This man is amazing! Master, I have awakened.

The audience went crazy with their votes, and Yan Shixun’s popularity soared.

Yan Shixun, who originally thought he would be eliminated in a few days: Miscalculated!

As they watched the live broadcast of Yan Shixun becoming increasingly indifferent, cynical, and wanting to be eliminated, the audience became even more excited: Is there anything more attractive than an idol who promotes science with a touch of mystique? All major companies, please sign him and let him debut!

For a while, Yan Shixun’s name became a sensation on the internet, and entertainment industry giants and influential fortune tellers came knocking at his door.

Yan Shixun sighed deeply: “I won’t debut! I won’t date or build a fanbase! Just leave me alone; all I want is to exorcise ghosts in peace!”

A certain bigshot from the ghost world wrapped his arm around Yan Shixun’s waist from behind: You can consider dating… me.

Tentative 3.5 Stars

Will re-rate after translations finish (which are good so read those instead of reading the MTL!!!)

First off, I finished this through MTL, so take everything I write with a grain of salt.

... more>> I have so much mixed emotions for this novel. I liked it until I didn't and I didn't like it until I did.

There were times when I felt it was so dragging I just wanted it to be over and done with, but then on the other hand, there are really great moments as well that I couldn't help but enjoy it.

It's not bad honestly, I persevered through 346 chapters of MTL, so it says a lot about it's potential.

What I liked about it:

  1. Yan Shixun and Zhang Wuping's friendship. If you've read s*um Villain's Self-Saving System, their dynamic is kinda similar to SQQ and SQH's. The difference is that Yan Shixun actually appreciates Zhang Wuping that even after college (they were college roommates) they kept in touch and YSX agreed to join ZWP's variety show when he wouldn't even entertain the idea if it came from someone else.
  2. The side characters. The side characters all have distinct, memorable, and lovable (the good ones at least) characters (I find it hilarious how much I shipped two of the side characters instead of the main characters. Note: the two side characters I mentioned is different from the canonical side characters who are in a relationship and whom I shipped hard as well)
  3. Each arc's story is different and has a solid storyline. My favourites include Gui Mountain, Children's Voices, Road of No Return, and the Aftermath. The ending was also really good as well.
What I didn't like about it:

  1. The romance and chemistry between MC and ML. It wasn't the worst I've seen and I was mostly ambivalent about it, but I just wasn't convinced, there was a significant lack of buildup in romantic tension between the two during the first half that I started shipping two side characters instead.

  2. The execution of the stories. Maybe it was just because of the MTL, but I sometimes felt that it dragged on some parts and there were information rehashed again and again.
  3. Characters being forgotten in the background. To be fair, the author has a large cast to work with, but all the same, some characters just gets forgotten in the background and you kinda forget they're there as well. And when you finally realise they've been there the whole time, you try to figure out how they fit in with the events at the time.
List of Arcs:

Arc 1 - Ghost Mountain:

Spoiler

Trapped in a villa at the mountain with a strange steward, the program team is told not to go up the fourth floor. Before going to bed, YSX reminds everyone to not go out of their rooms at night. In my opinion, I think this novel is quite good for me.

Why? Well, I like the elements of Shonen fight in this story hehehe. Because, from the very beginning, I didn't expect the romance in this novel and when I see our MC... Nah leave him be an exorcist and cheer on his holy fists is ways better.

So, if you like Romance, this is not for you.

... more>> But if mysterious, problems solving and fighting are your food, I don't think you'll hate this novel.

For me live stream comments that quite a lot didn't make me annoyed that much, you know, just scroll down if it too much information.

But what doesn't make sense is, even though there were many injuries and dead, people still came to that live stream variety show!😂

And for ML, I still don't have any ideas about him. I just think he is quite possessive (normal).

Maybe because..

Spoiler

He is an ancient entity+a big boss of hell

[collapse]

So I can see why he acts like that. But, honestly, he looks like a social awkward guy with MC most of times, it's quite cute in his own way. <<less

The supernatural cases that the production crew and cast get pulled into are interesting and the only thing that keeps me reading till the end. However, the MC and ML are not likeable, at least to me. MC is those indifferent type who's too cool to consider anyone a friend even if they think of him as a friend. All the other characters admire and respect him because he's powerful and saves them multiple times. ML is the possessive type who glares at everyone who comes close to MC and... more>> becomes very jealous even when people speak to MC for work related stuff. The only characters he slightly approve of are a junior exorcist and a senior exorcist simply because they refer to him as MC's partner/spouse. ML doesn't do much. He's mostly there for the writer to gush about how powerful he is and how everyone is scared or intimidated by him. Still, it's well-written and you can still enjoy it if you like supernatural horror stories. <<less

It. Waxes. Poetic. A LOT.

It may seem like an unfair gripe, but tension-filled scenes are diffused REALLY quick once you're in them because the author goes all out on describing just how cool and unwavering and inhuman MC is instead of letting the action flow. Like sure, all taoists and cultivators in novels are like that, inhumanly beautiful and capable of superhuman feats of strength, but it's shown not told. Imagine this, from Chapter 54, Part 1:

Spoiler

MC is fighting the false Mountain God and he's standing on the statue's head, right? And the weapon the false god is using is a spear, and he needs to dodge it. It takes THREE, THREE paragraphs of the author describing just how cool he is instead of building and releasing tension so the readers can feel the burn of the scene when he dodges the spear.

[collapse]

Like, I don't expect much, but damn. Not even most BL and BG novels I've read waxes poetic so many times about how cool the MC is, so much that it saps the tension from scenes that should be tense. Even the way his clothes flutter is noted. You see what I mean?

The plot is good; especially the shonen-ish horror concepts. All unique. I haven't gotten through most of it, but the celeb cast is pretty good; An Nanyuan and Bai Shuang are pretty well-rounded for side characters. The translation is ALSO top-notch save for the occasional incantations that remain untranslated and that I have to skip because I recall my Eighth Grade Syndrome Days reading it lololol!

As of now, the romance between MC and ML also feel awkward. MC is very visibly prickly and does not like people that much: hopes he grows out of it, like Gu Zhisang from another Supernatural-Showbiz novel. That is a cool and collected taoist done right. The Defrosting Ice Queen trope as she grows to experience human interactions is very sweet. Hope that also happens to Yan Shixun! <<less

Premise of mix supernatural and entertainment is interesting, but pacing is tedious and repetitive. First arc storyline was made transparent from the start and you cannot help but wonder why 23 chaps were needed. Jumping to different viewpoints of side characters, audience etc., maybe it was done to raise suspense, but makes you feel like rinse repeat. So it's not a fast-paced action packed novel usual for this genre. Horror elements felt flat in my opinion and I found myself scrolling through text to get to the point.

Why I read BL:

- female characters in online novels usually make me cringe.

- in BL the question of the happiness of motherhood and a family of three is rarely raised.

... more>> The first two arcs were very interesting. The MC is strong and capable, the ML is cool and mysterious, the side characters are funny.

And then the child appeared and the novel became exactly what I try to avoid. If I wanted to read about a happy family with a child, I wouldn't look for BL novels, don't you think? In short, the impression is completely ruined.

Spoiler

The child ate a bunch of fetuses and killed two people. MC was like "okay, he's a good boy." A couple of chapters later, the killer-child "daddy!!!" MC "son!!!" OMG OMG OMG SO s*upid

I really love this novel. It's one of my top favorites (though I'm a sucker for supernatural novels) and I will definitely read the translation after there a few more chapters.

It's easy to MLT and the conclusions that MC makes aren't outrageously predicted from a few clues. The author even foreshadows things so that the reader can figure it out before the MC.

It's plot heavy and the ML chases after MC shamelessly pretty early but it isn't requited until chapter 250 or so. But the wait is worth it and... more>> their love is so cute. It's hard to write about a stoic and oblivious MC falling in love but I think the author did it perfectly.

My only issue was that due to the large amount of side characters, perspective shifts happen a lot and sometimes I want to skip because the perspective changes when MC is in trouble. It's annoying when the author leaves on a cliffhanger and this happens multiple times throughout the story.

Also some of the stars on the variety show have no presence, for example the girl and variety star; and I even forget about them until they're mentioned. But the other characters are engaging so I can forgive that.

Spoiler

Ahhh!!! The animal comparisons really pierce my heart and make me love the characters even more! MC as a big wild cat and Lu Xingxing as a husky is so accurate. I ship ragdoll Song Ci x reliable Zhen Zhou

I got hooked in the first arc, but I feel like entering the second arc the author just made the MC less perceptive and not as "all knowing" as he was in the first arc? Like in the beginning of the novel, the MC knew what was up right away, started investigating asap, ect. But in this second arc, he ignores signs that I feel like with his portrayed character in the first arc, he should've noticed. Also don't rly like the ML :/ Like there is no chemistry and... more>> he came out of nowhere it doesn't really make sense. Feels pretty forced and rushed. Idk I just feel like the second arc could've been way better but it's not :, <

Giving it a 3 star rating cuz I feel like the first arc was good, however the second arc took it down and I can't judge the rest of the novel just from that, so I leave my opinion in the middle. Im dropping it from here but def read the first arc tho I recommend it, and if u continue to like the second arc too, then thats great! <<less

The supernatural plot is okay. Some of it feels unique. I like MC character esp when he unravel evil spirit background and give them the justice.

However some plot and characters feels redundant. The audience comments in livestream also too many. At first arc the comments is okay to read bcs it's still fresh. But in the third arc, I start to bored and skip every comments. I feels some of it unnecesary and make me lost interest esp when the comment appear while MC fight the ghost.

Oh, until this ch... more>> (115), I also don't see the romance between MC and ml. Maybe bcs ML isn't human and they only know each other in short time.

I will continue to read this when I'm in mood. <<less
