After suddenly dying, Lin Xi, a corporate s*ave, reincarnates as an obscure 18th-tier female star in the entertainment industry, struggling to rise to fame but never succeeding.

In the story, she is participating in a romance variety show full of scheming participants:

– A manipulative woman hopes to snag a wealthy husband through the show, – An innocent-seeming woman aims to gain popularity,

– A wealthy playboy treats the show as his playground,

– A charismatic man aims to expand his ‘pond’ of admirers.

Additionally, a melodramatic love triangle involving the male and female leads is about to unfold.

Overwhelmed by the convoluted plot, Lin Xi decides to just lay back and ‘play dead.’ The audience then witnesses scenes like:

– When the manipulative woman hypocritically shows concern to provoke her, Lin Xi nonchalantly agrees with everything she says.

– When the tearful innocent-seeming woman asks if Lin Xi dislikes her, Lin Xi helplessly spreads her hands.

– When the charismatic man tries to flirt, Lin Xi, holding a plate of braised fish, deadpans, “I eat fish, but I won’t be one of yours, try someone else.”

Guests: ???

Audience: Laughs at Lin Xi’s apparent social rebellion syndrome and her retorts, which seem to come straight from a sleazebag’s playbook.

Eventually, Lin Xi becomes popular for her unique ‘playing dead’ style, which frustrates the show’s producers since she forgets her role as a romantic participant. The director seriously tells Lin Xi, “This is a romance show, you need to interact more with the male guests.” Lin Xi awkwardly admits to possibly having ‘misandry,’ suggesting not to wrong the other male guests.

Director: ???

Audience: Laughs at the absurdity of ‘misandry,’ finding Lin Xi hilariously inept.

Stirred by Lin Xi, the production team brings in a top celebrity, Lu Li Bai, known for his ‘misogyny’ to be her official on-show partner. During their first meeting on the show, Lin Xi and Lu Li Bai glance at each other and quickly look away, obviously unwilling to play along with the producers.

Audience: ???

It seems this ‘mutual dislike’ couple is headed for a disastrous end. However, as the show continues, the audience slowly discovers a surprisingly sweet chemistry between them.

A bit cliche but this was a fun read!

To be honest, I enjoyed it more when they still weren't together. Once they became a couple, it kinda felt like it lost its steam there and the author just wanted to finish the novel. But overall, rating 4 stars because it was funny and kinda tied up everything nicely with no drawn out plot points.

This story wasn't actually something new but it was still enjoyable to read.

Both MC and ML were actress/actor who met at dating reality show. It started from misunderstanding on ML's part but later, he fell for MC first. However, romance between them was considered slow because MC had her own trauma.

Spoiler

In her last life, she was an illegitimate child and her mother kept changing boyfriend like changing shoes. Later, she started to lose her belief in romantic relationship. She was also afraid marrying into a wealthy family because her mother once was rejected by her father's family because she was just ordinary people.

That's why she took a long time to consider her relationship with ML

This story focused more on MC and ML's romance development while both careers in entertainment industry were often only mentioned in passing. There were face slappings but it wasn't that many. And ending was also typical ideal happy ending (wedding + baby). <<less

So, it's good. This is for the type of people who like entertainment industry wholesome fluffy comedy. There aren't any scenes that elicit discomfort from the viewer, unless you count laughing your ass off as uncomfortable. It might be.

The first arc, let's call this the "Love Journey" variety show arc, is very good. I loved it a ton, Chu You and Lin Xi's Brotherly CP / Dumb Beauty CP is my favorite thing in the world. Very good display of a platonic friendship. The relevant characters, i.e. Yingying (female lead... more>> of the original story) & Lu Libai feel decently fleshed out in their own ways. The story has a lot going on, but is very good at delivering that without making the reader feel overwhelmed. Each thread of suspense and mystery is intriguing in its own right, but never detracts from the main appeal of the story; the development of Lin Xi in the entertainment industry, the character interactions, and obviously, the bastards on Weibo and the comment section of streams being unhinged.

The second arc, however, or at least the part that follows up the "Love Journey" variety show was a tad rushed in my humble opinion. This, I had to MTL to read, so I'm not fully sure on the accurate translation, but its the show that requires physical fitness and navigation prowess, with a different premise each time, five regular guests and three guest stars each time. The first parts of this section are rather good, in fact everything not including the actual "King of the Coup" variety show was good. But her time as a guest star there really ruined this for me.

Spoiler

We see her get an agent right away, which is fine. He's a great agent from a great company and follows up on an open thread from the first arc. The little boy she saved did in fact change a lot, and it's great seeing our FL get rewarded for good deeds. Even the stuff after that, with the gossip columns getting photos of her with this other guy, speculating about how she got into the upper echelons of the industry that quickly. It's realistic and fun. But then we get to her second variety show appearance.

Plainly said, I don't like this section. Yes, it's one small episode; she's only guest starring. But they could still have put more depth in, or explored a different part of her character. It feels like Lin Xi disappears here, we don't get any of her fun personality or see her face new scenarios. Just like the book itself said; the whole internet knows she isn't physically the fittest, nor is she in any way competent with directions. But this? This 'I'm so unbelievably lucky' bullsh*t is so uninteresting, forced and discrediting to watch.

Sure, a lot of this show is dependent on some lucky breaks, but for those I can suspend my disbelief. Her meeting Lu Libai's parents and Xiaobao are forgivable; this is a rich people island, you're gonna meet rich people. Her falling into the secret room with Libai, I can forgive that too; it gave us a great emotional moment between our two leads that felt unique and heartfelt.

But this specific section adds nothing new or interesting into the mix. It's just a load of Mary Sue moments of the main character being praised for their luck and quirkiness. She 'just so happens' to take all the wrong directions, and skip past the whole first level. She just so happens to have glucose strips to give to the NPC on the second level. She just so happens not to have run into any of the malicious NPCs in the arena. She gets tired after getting chased and gets intentionally arrested, but, how could this be? IT JUST SO HAPPENS that the place she gets arrested to is on the 6th level. IT JUST SO HAPPENS there are people who can help her. We only get her personality for one section while dealing with a false hostage NPC before once again, IT JUST SO HAPPENS she walks outside before the big reveal happens and her comrades get locked behind bars while she doesn't. IT JUST SO HAPPENS her other colleagues found the true hostage and brought them to this specific important courtyard. IT JUST SO HAPPENS she found a secret door that lead to the end. OH MY GOD WHAT A LUCKY GIRL, the whole directorial team and cast shout in unison, trying to rub against the FL for good luck!

This isn't funny. This isn't entertaining. This is a waste of my time. Recall what I said was the appeal of the story, for me at least. Did Lin Xi progress in any way? Not that I saw. Any fun interactions? Barely. Nothing from Weibo and no barrage comments either. No, this was just plain frustrating. What are we here for? What's the point if everything is handed to her on a golden platter? Sure, the majority of the book is already really in her favor, because she's a good person who doesn't seek trouble. But this? Feel-good and Mary Sue aren't the same f*cking thing, I can feel the hand of the author smudging their dirty unwashed fingers all over my face. The author is fully capable of writing well, but this section, this specific set of chapters really boiled me.

[collapse]

Other than that we get great developments in Lin Xi's relationships, expanding their career paths, forming new connections and improving living conditions. We also get a lot of fun Lu Libai interacting with his employees and learning more about both himself and Lin Xi.

I dropped it there, not for any specific reason, and not because it's bad. I just felt like the threads of Su Meng's deal, future developments with Libai, Lin Xi's future with her family and then her progress in the entertainment industry were no longer of interest to me. But other people wholeheartedly disagree, have read to the end and fully enjoyed the experience. I'm just really picky~ <<less

😍 What can I say? You really can't hate a sweet sweet love story.

MC was funny and relatable, ML was also funny and loving. Apart from the storyline being a little cliche there is nothing I can nitpick about it.

It's just a good love story.
