[Tower Defense & Dungeon Attack RPG]

I saw the ending to the game no one was able to clear.

But, when I came to my senses, I was inside of the game.

In fact, I was in the tutorial stage, a place where strategy was impossible.

“I’ll clear this bullsh*t game no matter what…!”

Amazing, this brought tears to eyes and it's value can only be understood if you are patient and mature enough.

This taught the story of human essence of courage, strongwill and goodness that weak-hearted men have forfeited for a painless, 'easier' path - that is to give up the human heart, stop griefing and become a cold, close-minded efficient monster at heart. Ash is calculating, tactful but a true-to-name ruler. While should have been able to move people around like mere pawns and discard them efficiently as the ultimate commander, he... more>> hesitates, agonizes over every death he could have saved.

His monster front embraces such laughably naive and idealistic banner. But countless humanity of this front that he leads, burned their very existence to live and love, to prove again and again that this is the true will of people.

Maybe belatedly realized that only strong, gentle ones could have the courage not to hate and embrace the darknesses of people. That man is rightfully loved. <<less

I am writing this review after completing all 825 chapters of the main story.

Honestly the one of my most enjoyable series I've had the pleasure of completing. Depending on your taste, you could call it a masterpiece, but it is at least very good. I think even if the summary doesn't seem like it's for you, you should give it a shot.

One of the most detailed, truly complex stories that I've read in a while. All the details matter and comeback again not once but sometimes twice, thrice, and then... more>> again at the end. So satisfying for people who like to keep track of the little things. The plot stays on a steady and clear path until the end but still introduces enough surprises to stay interesting.

you feel like the MC might be OP based on the summary but the story quickly makes it clear that he isn't at all. It's truly a weak to strong story where the growth occurs across hundreds of chapters - unlike other series where MCs are already practically unbeatable by chapter 50.

The main character is excellently developed, and the rest of the cast is pretty good too. You will probably cry a lot, because there is a lot of tough character death, especially in the first half. But it doesn't feel contrived tragedy just for drama, it does a good job of depicting how hard the fights are and how even a victory has losses but they have to move on for the next fight. Good stuff.

Another reviewer mentioned somewhere (I forgot if on here or if it was a comment on the translator site) that the first half is very different from the second half. I strongly agree. The first half is slow and deliberate, but the second half starts focusing just on major events. There's a turning point in the series when events start to move faster and the tone shifts a bit, you could say it becomes a little rushed but compared to other "rushed" series this one doesn't loose track of the plot points or characters even though it hurries the pace a little more. The second half also has less loss, but there are still some sad surprises. The pacing difference didn't ruin the story for me but it's worth mentioning. I feel like the fight scenes in the second half are less impactful than the events that happen outside the fights. Whereas in the first half both were equally important.

General Ending spoilers: (no specific plot points or ending events are revealed but discussing overall vibe of the ending)
Spoiler

It does have a Disney happy ending, although still I cried every third chapter of the closing arc. It's cheesy but they gave us the whole cheese fondue - wrapped up every loose end and made a bow. Satisfying but yea, definitely cheesy. It's not so upbeat that it ruins the suffering of earlier parts of the story tho so don't worry about that. This is not a Tokyo revenge's undo-all-the-bad-stuff ending.

also there is a "and they were roommates" moment for two of the characters in the ending which made me smile. Idc if they were literally roommates Let'sgoooooo

[collapse]

The world building is fantastic, and comes into play significantly for the ending arcs. The author manages a really big cast excellently, and although generally the MC is the only fully fleshed out character, the rest get plenty of good moments and nice development.

Excellent top tier translation quality, which is so important with a story that is so detail oriented. Highly recommend if you are able to handle the slower pacing and tough "everything is an uphill battle" scenes in the beginning. Easily one of the best series I've read here, worth every minute. <<less

Absolutely amazing. What starts out as a classic, cliche regression develops into a story of how humans struggle to live better versions of themselves. The author is able to show character development by highlighting the constant tension between persevering and giving up, and how different characters reason between them. Compared to standard novels that simply upgrade stats and equipment after every victory in battle, this is truly a stand-out. You will not regret spending weeks on this.

I don't get it. Is everyone else on drug or something? Why so many impressed reviews?

MC, an ordinary modern person, is thrown to a magic world (from the tower defense game he was playing), and immediately acts like he belongs in the new world he's in, feels responsible for deaths he had nothing to do with, concocts plans, gives passionate life and death speeches, and burns himself to save everyone just like that.

It felt weird, as if chapter 1 was using characterisation of the MC from chapter 100.

So like I... more>> said, I don't get the hype, it's not good. <<less

Chapter ~400 EDIT: Wow, this novel is PEAK. It keeps getting better, and I haven't felt like dropping the novel at all even after reading 400 chapters in one go. Just came to edit my review after a really wild character development arc for the MC. Cried my heart out, and I love the twist.

I think this quote from the novel sums up the overall theme quite well:

Spoiler

"I have seen it over the past two years. The process of small, selfish, and disorganized individuals relying on each other, fighting together, and becoming heroes.

Realizing the noble value of life in the face of imminent death. The great will of ordinary people fighting together for one another. The miracle of hatred turning into understanding."

Chapter ~100 Review:

Will review again once I catch up, but man, this is a good novel!

First, it avoids some of the kingdom-building/war/tower-defense novel weaknesses. Although the cast is large, the important characters (Ex: members of the party/former members) aren't neglected. The MC doesn't feel alone; he feels surrounded by characters. Characters besides the MC get character development ! I found some of the characters introduced at the start pretty whiny and annoying, but they sure got really cool after character development (even the fantasy-racist character (they have an understandable reason ngl) learns!). Note that this character development may occur many chapters after their first appearance (I'm still waiting on the backstories of some of the first recruits). The characters are quite likable in general too. They have their flaws and quirks, but they're enjoyable and generally good.

Also, note that characters with names will die. So far, doesn't seem like super important characters die (we'll see :v), but there is character death. The author isn't afraid to let you know that, but at least they're not killing named characters frequently. Also, the named character death isn't treated poorly; they get their moments instead of being off-screened lol. I cried.

The MC isn't s*upid thankfully. He makes mistakes, but they're understandable ones. I sometimes feel like he's fed the thing he needs most "coincidentally" at times, but it balances out. You see, he manages to get what he needs to fulfill his plans.... but then his plans get derailed, so he has to creatively come up with a new strategy. That new strategy is often more interesting than what was given to the MC earlier and relies on past/less-obvious things he achieved. That way it feels less like plot armor and more like the MC actually being smart. Also, despite being a supporter/commander, he has his hype combat moments! EDIT: Things are revealed later sometimes (foreshadowing occurs :P), so it's actually a lot more balanced than I thought!

Also, the MC is pretty unpredictable at times. I enjoy when he whips something wild out and pulls off miracles that don't feel like plot armor.

The worldbuilding is also interesting! There are reasons why the world is like that (tower defense required RIP), but we're still slowly discovering the mystery. The OG body's past also seems interesting... EDIT: It is! Things heat up once he takes a break from tower defense stages... the worldbuilding is truly something. Also, the OG body's family is quite complicated. I love how complex they are as characters. I would call them ruthless. Their relationship with the MC is fun to read about.

A lot of novels about kingdom-building/tower defense kinda become flat and filled with X died, Y lived, etc., but this novel shows that there's warmth even during a war! The touching moments made me cry... and the sad ones felt meaningful. Death felt more than -1 soldier, and I really appreciate that. Also, the MC's subordinates don't feel like toadies despite their loyalty. They can be independent on their own.

Translations are good, but there's one weird thing. Sometimes the elderly people get their gender mixed up? I'm pretty sure this is an elderly woman (referred to as female more times than male), but she gets called a man sometimes. This also applied to another elderly man lol.

Also, the novel isn't completely tower defense. I love its human elements and when the MC visited a new location during a lull... it got even better? Vague description in the spoiler; nothing major spoiled.

Spoiler

Around Chapter 150, the MC visits the capital and things heat up! He meets a special someone and has a family reunion as well. Also, the OG body is quite mysterious... He's not as straightforward as the initial descriptions seem, and the MC slowly learns that. There's a reason why the MC wasn't outed from Day 1.

It is good. A lot of the top stories on this site are rather trite and all about one guy who is basically Superman who gets all the girls. Those stories are a dime a dozen and most phase out and get very uninteresting rather quickly.

Now if you would rather have a story about the physchlogical damage you would receive living forever while trying to save the world while those around you are never quite strong enough to assure that happens this is the story for you.

The action is not... more>> the greatest, the heroes are flawed with actual human emotions, and the main character gave up a life with all the girls for the sake of something greater.

There are major twists that not even I expected and nobody is safe from the relentless hordes of monsters that pour out of the lake kingdom. Your favorite character could die at any moment and sometimes do. It is a book with real stakes and heartbreak that really delves into physchlogical turmoil. Someone died hundreds of chapters ago, the characters still think about them from time to time and miss them.

What I am saying is that this book does end of the world right. The last stand against monsters that will consume the world and have hundreds of times before and in a last ditch effort they have called in someone from another plane of existence for the last game before the true end.

Will they win or all die. Honestly it could go either way. I for one am excited to see how this ends like one of the outer gods looking down on the world as it burns. If you don't get that reference then read the story.

So player, are you up for one more game with the demon king before your soul vanishes? It is a question worth considering.

Edit: it was so good, don't cry too much reading the endings. It was so well written. <<less

I'm having a ton of fun reading this novel, so let's go through the pros and cons of it:

Pros:

Translation:

... more>> One of the more impressive aspects of this novel is the rapid translation speed, averaging about 3 chapters a day. This is great for readers who like to dive deep into a story without long waits. Despite the rapid translation speed, the quality has not been compromised. The language flows naturally, and it's evident that the translator has taken great care in conveying the essence of the original text.

Story:

The story itself is captivating and offers a rich tapestry of events and characters that keep readers engaged. The pacing of the story is well-balanced. There aren't any dragged out segments, making it a smooth read from start to finish. A standout aspect of the novel. The humor is consistent and genuinely funny, adding a refreshing touch to the narrative.

Fighting Scenes:

They are mostly well done, giving you a good idea of what is happening. But, do keep in mind, they are very simple. But that, for me, is a positive. I'm not big on reading a fighting scene that spans chapters.

Cons:

Unexplained Love for the MC:

One of the more noticeable flaws is how almost every character seems to adore the main character (Ash) without much reason. Even worse, some people should absolutely hate him, but don't. This is very standard in pretty much any novel, but it's still a con from my point of view.

Pointless Stats:

This is not new for anyone who's read novels. To this day, I have yet to read a novel in which stats has any kind of impact what so ever. They are always arbitrary and only relevant when plot demands it to be so.

Irrelevant Items:

Similarly, magical weapons and armors are introduced but lack significance. Also very common. The MC basically showers his team with "Powerful" items, but they may as well not exist. Only some very specific items are even mentioned more than once (usually gag items).

Bottom line, 'I Became the Tyrant of a Defense Game' boasts impressive translation quality and speed, a well-paced storyline, good humor, and thrilling fight sequences. However, it does have its shortcomings, especially when it comes to character dynamics and the RPG elements. While it has its flaws, the pros outweigh the cons for those looking for a light and entertaining read. I can recommend it to anyone who wants something to read. <<less

this has probably easily become one of my top web novels up there with orv and sssrh. Other reviews have described it well, but this story continues to deliver in a high stakes mindset, although obviously the MC will not fail each of the challenges (considering how the story is still ongoing), the story keeps you on your toes on how much the MC will lose to gain the victory.

highly recommend if you enjoy a story that's a good mixture of action with some comedy (and at least for me... more>> you can read into certain actions for romance, although romance is certainly not relevant to the central plot) that keeps with a consistent power scaling in terms of the MC not becoming overtly powerful.

the translation is really good, although there are a few minor grammatical / pronoun mistakes here and there, but the actual meat of the story is translated really well so props to the translator for translating this. <<less

Liked it a lot,

MC is absolutely broken like other LNs, neither is MC a wuss like in the JP LNs, plots interesting, the accompanying manwha has some good art.

The translator also translates 10 chapters every 3ish days which is great.

It's really quite good. Very early on into the story, but basically MC was transmigrated into an impossibly hard game.

The story itself is quite simple, being to clear the game. So far it seems the story is very straightforward and structured, going from wave, to prep, to wave. This might change some time in the future but this is how it is right now.

It's too early on to make any educated judgement on the characters, but they all seem one dimensional. Although I will say that they do work very... more>> well together and create some fun moments.

A few worries for this story is that if the author doesn't pay close attention the power scaling could get out of control. If this happens the only way to reign it back in again is just to kill the character off, but that wouldn't feel good as a reader to see a character get killed off because they were too op.
Spoiler

Demian and his perfect accuracy thingy. I'm worried he's gonna die because his ability is basically an instant kill if he gets an opening.

[collapse]

Overall this novel has a lot of potential, but if the author is subpar it could very easily be ruined. <<less

Why so many 5 star reviews? If this average novel is 5 star then these reviewers will have mutliple or**sm reading a really good web novel. So 1 star to ballance out a 2 star novel if novel if you are very kind with compliments.

MC does not act like a human being. He is summoned into a game world emergency situation. But he is not surprised, act like he is summoned into differnt world everyday, get banged up close to death weekly, even smarter than a corrupt politician who cause... more>> death of poeple but they still vote for him. If he in reality is that inelligent then he wouldn't be playing video games, even a tr*shy one that no one plays anymore for years.

And the character who summoned him in the game, has god like power to restart world as much as he

wants, can transmigrate to another world, code a computer game and maintain game server by communicating with service providers for years, comment on online video stream and summon other people into his world. With so much absurd level of power and intelligence, he can't kill some beast? Does author really want us to believe this crap. He has even watched Mc's stream. So he knows how to win. This type of game is very easy to win by following a playthrough of another player. Coz it doesn't require game skill like you need to play fps or moba game. You don't play yourself, Ai do that for you, you just manage it. So if you manage step by step you can almost replicate the whole process except the part that depends on luck.

The god quotes life is a one time coin, no save load, if MC dies its 'the end'.

But charcters in his world has no life coz He can restart from previous save point numerous times. And the selfish useless tr*sh God wants to sacrifice Mc's life for no reason other than his pleasure. Coz no one in his world is a living being as per his statement.

Most funny thing, this s*upid MC wants from God in exchange for this 99.9999% death chance mission is 10 billion won. Not even a million doller !!! Where he could have wanted to become most healthy forever young immortal king of our world. As a god who has the power to restart world as wish he sure should have the power to do so. MC is a typical beta door mat korean MC.

So, if you have defeceted your brain out of your as*hole to miss multiple glaring plot holes, you can give it a 5 star and read happily. But if not then don't start the novel or drop it after reading some early chapters.

"I Became a Tyrant of a Defense Game" is an absolute masterpiece in the realm of web novels. From the very first chapter, it hooks you in with its unique premise and expertly crafted characters. Each character feels fleshed out and real, with their own motivations and arcs that add depth to the story.

The plotpoints are expertly woven together, keeping readers on the edge of their seats with every twist and turn. What truly sets this story apart is its ability to keep the narrative fresh and engaging. Nothing ever... more>> feels redundant or unnecessary; every scene serves a purpose and propels the story forward.

But what truly makes "I Became a Tyrant of a Defense Game" shine are its characters. From the cunning protagonist to the diverse cast of allies and enemies, each character is memorable and leaves a lasting impression. Their interactions are filled with wit, emotion, and sometimes even heartbreak, making them feel like old friends by the end of the story.

Overall, "I Became a Tyrant of a Defense Game" is a hidden gem that deserves far more recognition than it currently receives. Its well-thought-out plot, engaging characters, and expert pacing make it a must-read for any fan of the genre. <<less

Absolute masterpiece, please don't trust any reviewers that stopped after 50 chapters. Maybe it's because I came from the manhwa looking for "another mind-numbing reincarnation action-adventure, " that I had lower expectations going in. Now here I am, hundreds of chapters later, procrastinating finishing the novel because I don't want it to end. These characters have become my friends, and it's been truly gratifying to watch them struggle to learn and grow over their journey. The plot itself is truly exactly as stated in the beginning: survive 100 monster waves.... more>> But obviously it's so much more than that so definitely read it :)

Characters: 10/10

Despite Ash being extremely intelligent and a capable leader, he's far from an OP character. He has to struggle every step of the way, coming to terms with the fact that people die due to his decisions as a leader. What's the alternative? How many friends' lives must be lost to save a world of strangers? Do all lives have equal value? What is the difference between humans and sentient monsters? Watching Ash and his friends navigate this enormous responsibility and all its moral implications felt like gaining a tiny insight into the human condition. (I came here for mindless monster hunting what the heck?)

All the characters are complex and flawed, and sometimes make mistakes. But they're also constantly growing and changing, so it's hard to hate them when they mess up. Worldbuilding: 10/10

Not only does the world have a complicated history and realistic political conflicts, as a veteran in the genre, I know how difficult it is to avoid plot holes when dealing with "hard systems." I'm amazed at how well the author kept meticulous inventory of every skill, object, etc. Throughout the entire book. Every time I had the thought of "couldn't they use ABC to prevent XYZ?" The next paragraph would answer my question. You can tell the author is really smart.

For those curious, there's a little romance but it probably takes up 1% of the story. Most of their dynamic is closer to "found family." I like this aspect though. Having none is unrealistic, but focusing too much on it makes for s*upid soldiers, and we're in the middle of a war here! No time for that. Anyways, I highly highly recommend this book! <<less

I agree with most of the other 5 star reviews, but what truly got me into this series was the feeling of despair and powerlessness during some of the battles, especially those in the 2nd half of the story. But that's the thing, people feel sad, powerless and are scared. Some run, some hide, but they try to find some hope, some courage to stand again and again. They loose people and things important to them, they loose their way in life but still try to come back and do... more>> the right thing.

I really liked all the mythological and historical references, from ancient myths to modern stories. I liked the poetry of MC, even if he himself admitted that they were all copied from "our" world. I also loved how he interacted with his teams and how those teams interacted between each other. It all felt very natural with how they slowly created bonds between each others, how by the very end all of the heroes still had important roles to play.

It also had like 20 chapter epilogue, a rarity among many series, where people didn't immediately change and the world didn't become a paradise. They all know that the changes will take time but everyone is full of hope. <<less

One the few manwha I like as a webtoon to go read all the novel. Even so the webtoon skip some "minor part" this minor part put a whole different perpesctive on this story and put an angle to a character. The Dion Squad during stage 5 who shown their happiness more here act more like young adult.

Every character can die at any moment, love story could last long or not, joy can come and go, I was sometimes sad, happy for this characters. Well most of my favorite died... more>> at one point of the story so...

But every time a death of an important is shown it's always a character that fought until the end or as the baddest ending possible.

Spoiler

Burnout who exploded herself after being injured, Oldgirl who protect Ash, or Skuld who protect everyone before dying. Even some villain got a cool death like Alexander (one of my favorite of the 10 nightmares commander).

[collapse]

I very like this perspective of the story. Even if we know the MC and the main Party might succeed or with or without critical damage, you don't know if one of them might die.

Spoiler

For example Evangeline during stage 3 or much later during stage 47 or 48 I don't remember when Lucas fought alone a group of the most dangerous monster.

And we're not stuck to the main place of the story we learn a lot about this world. How Mana work, why Ader want the true ending, what is really the Lake kingdom etc... And everything make sens. I could honestly go a long way to explain why I like this story. But I'm gonna stop their. <<less

Incredibly enjoyable story. There were quite a few interesting twists and really fantastic pay offs. Definitely worth reading.

+++Really compelling cast of characters, the author really puts care into weaving their backstories into the conflicts

+++The villains are also really compelling in their own way as well. For me, one of the best arcs was with the vampire king. So if you're a bit unconvinced by the story at first, like I was, definitely read through that arc and see if it hooks you. It sort of embodies the essence of the... more>> narrative structure that comes after. Otherwise, this story probably isn't your cup of tea.

Something I found off-putting, but gradually came to accept was the strange tone. At times there would be incredible emotional moments, and then it would be just comedic in the next. Its very "game-like" in that sense, I feel like since theres so many twists and turns, the author doesn't treat some moments with the importance they deserve, but more often than not there are plenty of satisfying payoffs that make up for it. Definitely worth reading. <<less

After that? The pacing become normal, the story is great, well writen story and somewhat fresh, the aspect of war is realistic, every death has a meaning even for random npc who doesn't even have a name

Adding on, the novel has an amazing choice of poems

The lacking parts however

I disliked the way they never really gave closure to some characters and some stories

Spoiler

The entire theme that godhand was listed as missing and not dead seemed pointless, and given that they didn't really do anything with that, it felt wasted

Another issue, though minor I had, was the new characters introduced in the last 100 chapters

You can't really blame the novel for them having little development or relevance, given that there wasn't enough chapters to expand upon them but still

I mentioned earlier that this novel has incredible hype moments and peaks, but it also has its far share of cringe moments to balance it out.
Spoiler

One thing I can think of is the depression arc, I get it was sad at parts, but the part of him going like "I must use the prisoners as human bait" just felt very edgy and cringy.

I also feel like the strategies Ash uses for some of the earlier fights are quite common sense?, Only really in the latter half does his strategies seem alot more refined and unexpected. The ending too, for some characters was just felt overly tragic for no reason

Spoiler

Specifically Aider and Nameless, Like even though Aider was bound to die either way, it doesn't make sense for him to be forgotten?, Like they get their one moment, but even then, that moment, nameless doesn't really remember him. I can only hope the side stories tie up some of the knots
