[Tower Defense & Dungeon Attack RPG]

I saw the ending to the game no one was able to clear.

But, when I came to my senses, I was inside of the game.

In fact, I was in the tutorial stage, a place where strategy was impossible.

“I’ll clear this bullsh*t game no matter what…!”

The difference between a good and bad novel of this type is completely dependent on whether or not the story and characters are compelling enough. After all, if the protagonist is transported to a game world and everything is gamified, then it's not very satisfying to read about it. Why not just play a tower defense game yourselves? You're here to read about our protagonist overcoming obstacles in a world with the comrades that he made along the way, not really reading about how much it costs to upgrade equipment... more>> with litRPG elements.

The fact that the characters has undying loyalty towards the MC is boring. The fact that the characters he recruits doesn't care or doesn't mind how he actually knows everything about future events is boring. The problem is that none of the characters question the MC, and that makes them really dull. Despite every character having some sort of drama or turmoil, it ends up kind of flat because you know the main character is monitoring the back scenes somehow.

I dropped this novel a bit after the arc where he visits his homeland city and has to interact with his royal family. Again, a great opportunity to actually introduce characters but instead you're just pulled into more boring irrelevant characters while not sparking any sort of tension to propel the story forward to become something more than a dungeon defense sim game turned into a novel. <<less

50 chapters in and the story are absolutely boring. There are no difference or excellence between him and other players. His tactics are orthodox and you would never catch what's so good in him that he actually won the highest difficulty level. The clever tag should be removed. Beside the tutorial chapter which he won completely out of plot armor from a priest that has OP skill, everything is just ordinary strategy that every player could do

You should read it at least once in your life. This is the greatest novel with the complex Emotion I ever read!!

The plot, character backstory, development, world building is really amazingg! Even a small character has a big impact in this webnovel.

If you search the novel that can make you cry and laugh, this is the answer!

Spoiler

Great novel, has all cliche plotlines but not one of them goes the normal boring or Deus Ex machina route. Skillfully written with excellent character development. Also the Game System Mechanism is relevant till the end and has proper foundation.

And you can read poems! As MC is interested in poems in previous life. Lot of emotional passages in this novel.

This novel keeps getting better and all plot lines are managed properly without unnecessary extending or rushing

It's really good, there were frustrating moments but there were moments the story could make you try. Damn, this author really knows how to make a grown man cry through his writings.

Anyway, the MC has his moments of weakness, his moments where he's strong and expect a lot of plot twist. So don't expect an OP MC like those in Chinese Novels or like Solo Leveling.

He's just a human, probably one of the most human MCs I've read in a long while.

The characters are fairly interesting and there seems a pretty high risk of death for most of them too. At least as of so far though, the very high arbitrariness in the forces arrayed against them (including not just monsters, but also hostile NPCs and political enemies) makes a lot of it unsatisfying for me. When they triumph it feels less like overcoming adversity and more like, well, of course they did, it's a story. And when they fail, it feels unfair and through little to no fault of their... more>> own.

The promise of the game in the beginning is that there will be lots of death and it will be tense through to the end, so I don't think the characters will get much of a respite at all or feel like they can manage what's coming without having to risk the loss of friends.

I do think it will improve as more of the reasoning behind the conceit is revealed so I am going to continue reading and hold off on giving it a star rating, but I worry this may be a story of author-forced tragedy that I will ultimately regret the time I spent reading it. <<less

So, I've binged this novel quite hard. Chapters are on the smaller side, but still quite fun. The story is fairly straight forward: Dude transmigrates into game as a character that dies early (or is an extra). You know, very standard Korean stuff. The way it differs is that it becomes a TD game with rules (which get broken all the time) and a nice political setting.

For the characters: Ash? He's a solid character. I've been finding myself liking his role in the story quite a bit. However, Lucas... I... more>> don't know, he just doesn't hit the mark for me. Feels out of place and his actions sometimes make little sense in the context of the story.

Now, speaking of characters, Evangeline is just adorable. Every scene she's in adds a sprinkle of joy to the narrative. As for Jupiter, it's evident that the author is investing a lot in her character development. She's been growing on me, and I'm excited to see where her arc goes.

But, let's be real here: Nameless is hands down best girl. She brings so much to the table, and every chapter featuring her is a treat.

All in all, the novel's got its ups and downs, but it's certainly worth a read. It's got action, some heartwarming moments, and a good mix of characters that keep you engaged. If you're looking for something to get invested in, give this one a go. You might just find your new favorite character!

Except Lucas. He sucks. <<less

I had to come here and write a review...

I laughed, I cried (boy did I cry a lot), but what an absolute RIDE it has been.

Someone else summed it up perfectly:

"The more you read, the better it gets. This also means that you won’t truly understand the die-hard fans’ praise until you’re five hundred chapters in with your phone in a deathgrip in one hand and a box of tissues in the other."

Thank you Author, for such an amazing journey. One of the best novels I have ever read.

trying to decide whether to read a novel based on NU reviews always feels like trying to read a whole novel itself, so I’ll try to keep this short.

read if you want:

Happy ending, a protagonist that’s actually INTERESTING, really good action and planning scenes, characters that you will care about, stakes that feel real, poetic life lessons that will stay with you

don’t read if you want:

Well developed romance, “show don’t tell”

Spoiler

the romantic relationships come out of nowhere. There’s little to no buildup, especially one of the relationships between two of the supporting characters. However, it knows its place. It doesn’t take up a large part of the book and isn’t annoying. As for show don’t tell, it’s an isekai + future knowledge book. There’s going to be a lot of explaining. Maybe my brain has been rotted from reading hundreds of isekai manhwas, but I didn’t find their level of explanation annoying.

[collapse]

Note: the more you read, the better it gets. This also means that you won’t truly understand the die-hard fans’ praise until you’re five hundred chapters in with your phone in a deathgrip in one hand and a box of tissues in the other. Also, I recommend listening to “towards the sun” by rihanna on loop as you read. You’ll know why by the end.

hoped this helped and happy reading <3 <<less

Want character development? We've got you, plenty of friends that grow with MC, and MC isn't born perfect either.

Competent villains with reasonable goals? Yep, it's here. MC is compassionate without being a pushover? Yep.

Characters being OP and making fights boring? None of that here, this is the monster front and everybody sweats to get things done, and mourn together the losses.

... more>> Late romance, lovable and dedicated FL, in which you actually care about because of a good build up and a good back story? This novel has it.

Mystery, that child like wonder of wanting to know the world which lies beyond the walls, or the story behind a certain place? It'a here.

Most importantly, plot twists, reveals which are hinted at since the beginning, characters being more important than what we gave them credit for, and surprises. This novel also has it.

Take my word, this is not your average "game became real with system" novel. Go and read it. <<less

It's alright as a story. But very badly written for how epic the battles are supposed to be. Read the first few chapters, but feel free to stop when it gets uninteresting.

The MC makes interesting tactical decisions near the start of the story. But loses steam later. Making it more emotional and chaotic with no clear plan rather than tactical.

An example, even when he wants to preserve lives, he still takes unneeded risks on scouting missions and gets overconfident multiple times despite it ending badly, and doesn't seen to learn... more>> his lesson or account for those.
Spoiler

its shown multiple times that monster waves can come ahead of schedule, but the MC always (and yes I mean ALWAYS) gets caught offguard when ever that ability is used by the enemy. This causes deaths that could have been avoided.

[collapse]
he also fails to test any of his tactics, in the context of the world being "real", beforehand despite having preptime before monster waves. This often times causes things to go wrong, and deaths to occur. No mock battles or invasion to test his defenses or ally abilities, nothing.

The visualization of the big scenes don't really hit right for me. Probably a translation error along side the pronouns making it difficult to visualize the characters or know who is speaking or being described at times.

The tactics overall are also uninteresting as the story progresses, with some very strong abilities being suddenly used and explained (badly) afterward.
Spoiler

despite mana potions being part of the story, and the MC's ability to create walls being based on his mana, he rarely ever uses mana potions to sustain his ability for long periods of time, and his mana capacity being low is a common plot device used in the story.

The MC's monster capture ability is also rarely expanded upon, he often times just gets monsters (to use as fodder) and its never explained how he got them, and never explains how he raises "loyalty" with them.

[collapse]

My main gripes are the lack of development of "hero" characters. Past the 600 chapter mark, he supposably has over 1000 "hero" characters to be leveled up, and even more regular soldiers, but it's never properly visualized or expanded in the story. Often times, strong hero characters are introduced, but their abilities are never expanded upon and they die in the next battle. With the MC never utilizing their abilities properly despite having their abilities listed in his menu.

There are also a few time skips in the story, which I didn't like. Especially in a story like this where each fight is important.

Certain character's capabilities are also nerfed as the story progresses, Damien in particular was hit very hard. He is supposed to be a sniper than can hit what ever he wants from any distance without even needing to look (due to having maxed out accuracy as shown in the tutorial fight with the spider queen). But later in the story, needs direct vision of his target. It was earlier described that his projectiles would even curve and bend around things to hit his intended mark, but this feature of his projectiles are never described again past the tutorial. Especially in later chapters where it would have been invaluable. His actual limits to range and accuracy are also never tested. Is it possible he could snipe monsters that arrive from the lake days before they even arrive? Again, never tested.

Lucas has a very strong movement ability, but he rarely uses it. Or if he does, it's rarely described when he fights. It has no defined distance, cool down time, or mana cost. Lucas' own mana capacity is also never defined.

Evangelines Damage Save and Payback abilities aren't very well expanded upon despite being very powerful. For example, very often it's stated that her damage save has limits, but those limited are never defined or tested. Her damage Payback uses damage stored in her first ability, but it's never said it has to actually "hit" anything to be used up. Why she can't just hit the air or ground to tank indefinitely? Her personal ability, cross road, is also poorly defined and almost never described after its first introduced. Despite costing mana, her own mana capacity is never defined, in turn, her usage of the ability is never tracked. How many "turns" does it take to use? How many turns does it take for her mana to recharge to be used again?

The abilities of side characters are not well defined in general in similar ways to Lucas and Evangeline.

Mana and cooldowns are especially poory described. How long does it take for Jupiter's mana to come back after she's used it? How many spells does a single mana potions give her? How many turns of tanking does a single mana potions for Lily? All of these things can be quantified to give a sense of realism and steaks.

The sense of time spent in and outside of battle is also not well described. Despite a single "turn" being described as 3 minutes, the way combat is described does not follow the rule very well.

On the MC himself

He doesn't have any clear overarching goals outside of saving humanity, but it makes sense because
Spoiler

the MC isnt actually reincarnated, but instead has memories from another world overwriting his own with each time the "world" resets when hunimanity loses

[collapse]

The abilities he gets are strong, but he doesn't really use them efficiently, and his tactics are either underwhelming or poorly explained.

The mc's personality is okay, but the pretty generic "good guy" trope who doesn't want to sacrifice lives. But not as well written as even someone like Steve Rogers from the MCU. He has moments where he is close to giving up and theyre supposed to he emotionsl scenes, but I'm not really convinced with the writing. <<less

This story is one of my favourites.

Eventough the story is set in a dark setting, the story is mainly light hearted but not always. You can clearly feel despair and hope as if you are one of the characters in the story. Fights are intense and descriptive and strategies are logical and clever.

Author tread on dark themes revolving around humanity and necessary evil quite cleverly. What I most like is even amidst all the trials, how Ash keeps fighting for hope while defending his humanity.
