Chen Luo discovered he could scavenge the minds of the dead.

So he went to a graveyard and scavenge the brain of a deceased Great Emperor, figuring he’d borrow it for a bit.

While others were still fretting over how to cultivate Qi and achieve Foundation Establishment, Chen Luo was already pondering the ninety-ninth method for reaching the Mahayana stage.

The novel is so bland I was conflicted whether to write a review or not.

The MC is transmigrator. His cheat is the ability to absorb brainwaves from corpses, which give him some fragmented memories and experiences, upgrade his cultivation talent, and as computing power to crank up his comprehension.

The MC is rather neutral good. Not a goody two-shoes, but also not killing machine. He's low-key without trying to be one or hides his ability. He's just sort of merge in the background in this world. He doesn't get everything handed to him, like your typical heaven chosen, but the universe did line up for him, creating a comfortable path for him to walk on. I don't think he's ever had any setbacks in cultivating, other than the lack of resources. No frustrating enemy either, just passing villains.

No typical tropes, like genius to tr*sh, broken engagement, arrogant young masters, face slapping, old farts with anger issues, and so on. But no noticeable hooks or gimmicks either.

It's neither good or bad. It's a comfortable read, but you'll most likely forget about this after a few weeks of not reading. It's just that forgettable.

Edit: bumped it up from three stars to four, since 1. I appreciate the translator team. 2. I love the horror element added. 3. There's a good deal of character growth as the novel goes further.

This is probably one of the most interesting cultivation novels I've read, and I'm giving it 5 stars. The MC has a cheat, and yes it is an enormous golden finger, but he still has to work hard and take risks and be strategic and clever about his choices. I like that he's ruthless when he has to be but that he also maintains his humanity and still shows some of it here and now, even if the years of cultivation inevitably make him a bit colder (he sees people... more>> he started this long journey with get old or die and I like the solemnity that it attaches to his character). Despite it all, he has a humorous side too that comes up when he's shamelessly digging graves and snatching other people's skulls for his cheat lol. I've already read up to 350 chs on MTL and I have found myself really liking it so far. No nonsense harem stuff. No romance. He's not arrogant, although he does use his power when needed to get things done. There is also a sense of real danger that he faces, and the author incorporated horror mixed with folklore elements into this cultivation world, that is quite interesting. <<less
