On the day I died, a spring rain started to fall on the world.

I shouldn’t have but I couldn’t help but think of Yan Chao Sheng.

For the past centuries, he had always stood in front of me stubbornly, even taking and blocking lightnings for me.

On these naive times , I used to think that he loved me. Until later, he brought back the one who was truly in his heart, a fairy with whom I shared a great likeness.

I sighed, how cruel.

I gave my last breath too soon, therefore I didn’t get to see a figure staggering towards me under the heavy rain.

Yan Chao Sheng, the powerful demon king who owned everything under the sky, couldn’t even fly on a cloud at that moment.

*

Opening my eyes once again, I returned to seven hundred years ago.

Yan Chao Sheng back then was still young, not yet the demon king, but just the lowest disciple who was born with a demon pulse and suffered all kinds of mistreatments.

I surely felt that being s*upid once was already enough.

When he grabbed the corner of my clothes and I then trampled on his fingers, he still refused to let go.

I no longer loved him and this was just the beginning.

[A demon X his cute wife who was very sweet and clingy wife in his memories but is no longer like that] After so many hardships, no matter how pitiful Yan Chao Sheng was, Liu Shuang always remembered the day of the catastrophe, so she kept telling herself, to never pity a demon again.

And Yan Chao Sheng, who tempered his soul and broke his bones for her, never retrieved the sweet and gentle her of back then.

I honestly lost track of how many times I cried while reading this. The writing is so beautifully written, though some parts (especially Chapter 84) were really difficult for me to get through. I had to take a break before continuing, haha. At first, I absolutely despised the male lead. I thought he was the worst of the worst. He treated the female lead so terribly, despite the fact that she always showed him nothing but love and sincerity. The author did an amazing job showing just how deeply she... more>> loved Yan Chaosheng and how he gradually shattered those feelings until she no longer loved him. Because of that, when she traveled 700 years into the past, her attitude and actions toward him felt completely justified and reasonable. Still, it was tough to read, and I couldn't help feeling frustrated at times because his past self was innocent, yet she projected all her resentment toward the future demon lord onto him. In this context, a person should be judged based on the environment he lives in. Two people raised in entirely different circumstances are bound to turn out differently.

The ending was definitely left open. Thankfully, there are extras, otherwise, I would've felt really down. After reading the extras, I came to understand that while Yan Chaosheng's actions in the future may seem cruel, they were ultimately justified. When it comes to hatred, just like anything else, there's always the matter of who was in the wrong first. Without completely giving too much away, I'll just say this:
Spoiler

Yan Chaosheng was torn between love and the deep resentment born from the slaughter and extermination of his clan, as well as the responsibility to protect what remained of his own kind. It was difficult to make a decision. His choice to kill Liu Shuang was driven by duty and responsibility. It was what had to be done. Not killing her was an act of love and compassion.

In the end, the future ML was simply too late to understand his own emotions, and his inability to express or nurture love left others with a lasting negative impression of him. <<less

The story was well written. Personally, I am bit dissatisfied with the ending. But it was inevitable as per the beginning of story.

The beginning part of the novel made me tear up. Like I couldn't understand how one can be cruel and unfeeling to such an innocent being. I hoped MC would forget about ML and lived a carefree life, but it didn't clearly happen as author had planned the direction early on, and I just remained as a spectator.

Well, now I am just waiting for side story, so author... more>> could feed my delusions. <<less

The novel talks about the journey of the MC from a naive, weak, deeply-in-love woman towards a strong and capable one, dedicated to help others. As she realizes she has deceived herself in loving the undeserving ML in her first life, she dedicates her second life to becoming powerful, protecting her loved ones and possibly killing the ML before he imbarks on the evil road.

The ML of the past is, actually, very different from his future one: weak, without background, bullied and discriminated by every Sect Cultivators for his snake... more>> blood. His life trajectory is quickly linked to the MC who, mercilessly, tries to kill him off without success. The best scene in the novel is when she actively tries to kill him but, for a series of (un) fortunate coincidences, he thinks she is trying to protect and take care of him.

Slowly, the MC changes her mind, stops thinking about how to kill him and instead how to stop him from turning evil. What doesn't change is her blindness in recognising that the ML of the past is a completely different person from the future one, refusing to see how the past ML has fallen in love with her and gets continously trampled on and hurt because of her.

If you like angsty a novel exploring the question "will he be forgiven", this is for you.

I will spoil the plot a bit to better explain

Spoiler

At the beginning, the MC has been married to the ML for a century. She loves him much and she feels indebted to him whereas the ML is distant, giving her crumbles of care. The turning point in their relationship is the appeareance of another woman who captures the attention of the ML. The MC painfully realizes that her love is unrequited and asks for a divorce. The ML agrees but warns her that she is nothing for him any longer. Soon after, the MC discovers that her native house is in grave danger and goes back to beg the ML for help. He blocks her from meeting him, ignores her pleadings and refuses to save her when she gets kidnapped by one of his enemy. Heartbroken, she sacrifices her heart to escape at the cost of dying shortly thereafter.

From a moral point of view, this ML is undoubtedly unforgivable. He has married her with the sole purpose of cultivating and then taking out a powerful magical artifact inside of her. During their long marriage, he does develop bland feelings of hesitation and pity, but... too little, too late. From the ML's point of view, he has spent centuries looking for this artifact and, as his past, hard life hardened his heart and conscience, he doesn't consider the MC's life more important than his long-desired goal.

After the MC dies, she wakes up in another person's body in the past and swears to herself she will never fall in love or pity the ML. On the contrary, she should kill him to prevent him from becoming a powerful demon. At this point, the parties are reverted: the ML is the weak and pitiful one who gets attached to the MC as she gives him crumbles of kindness.

Overall, I feel that the MC is too much ruthless against the ML. She is justified, mind you, but still, she should realize that, being the past, her resentment is directed towards an innocent person. He is not the unloving, cold person of the future. He helps and saves the MC many times only to be deceived and betrayed by her uncaring attitude till the point that he

The ending might be a bit unsatisfactory for someone, it's an open one.

The plot is built properly, that said, the ending left me a bit confused, about the last sentence that was written. Because in theory it shouldn't be possible. It doesn't matter much though.

In terms of characterization, the extras don't appear a lot, they exist mostly to advance the plot or for emotional situations, to put it in a way.

The leads, well, I can't say that ml's past wasn't bad, but still, his attitude was mostly sh*t to her, who was innocent, not related to his pain.

Hence why I think the... more>> fl's attitude and actions (especially to him) in her second chance are truly justified from beginning to end.

Theirs was quite a twisted relationship, gotta admit.

That, naturally, changed them both, for better or worse.

That said, their actions in the end were pretty heroic.

The antagonist on the other hand... just pure evil and greed, there isn't much to say besides that really.

As for the translation, it was pretty good. <<less
