On New Year’s Eve, feeling lonely because my girlfriend was studying abroad, I received a phone call. Without thinking much of it, I answered, and the person on the other end introduced themselves as that Mary*. To make things worse, she seemed to be getting closer and closer to my house.

But here’s the thing—I’m away on a trip right now. What on earth is Mary planning to do?

*Mary refers to a character from a well-known Japanese urban legend where a ghost named Mary calls the person and gets progressively closer to their location.
