My Girlfriend Was Stolen, but the Princess I Met in an Online Game Is Madly in Love with Me!

Miyahara Kazuya was dumped by his girlfriend, Kobayashi Misaki. To make matters worse, she was stolen away by Shouta, the number one guy in their class. Deeply hurt and drowning in despair, Kazuya found solace in an old gaming friend, Lily, whom he reunited with in an online game after a long time.

Eventually, they decided to meet in real life—only for Kazuya to discover that Lily’s true identity was none other than Shirasaki Rinka, the most revered princess of the school!

When Misaki and Shouta saw Rinka openly getting close to Kazuya at school, they were shaken to their core, overwhelmed by jealousy and regret.

Through his encounter with Rinka, Kazuya began to grow as a person—and from there, he embarked on a new chapter in his life.

We’ve all seen this trope before—there’s absolutely nothing new here. Just another story about a quiet, insecure, socially awkward guy getting dumped by a girl who suddenly becomes bold and outgoing. The breakup is exaggerated to absurd levels—no real person would behave like she did, but fine, let’s chalk it up to narrative necessity.

Of course, the most beautiful girl in school falls in love with this emotional ghost of a boy. Classic wish fulfillment. And it makes me wonder—what’s with Japanese authors and their obsession with these broken, self-hating MCs?... more>> I get it—it probably comes from a place of personal experience. And if these stories bring comfort to some readers, good. But maybe constantly reinforcing that fantasy isn’t doing anyone any favors. In real life, women—especially the confident, attractive ones—aren’t lining up to “fix” emotionally stagnant guys who act like wounded children.

And let’s not pretend this kind of devotion from a school goddess is remotely common. It’s a rare personality type that finds joy in dragging someone out of their own pit of despair every single day. That’s not romance—that’s unpaid therapy.

Now, let’s talk about a few things that genuinely break the story's logic.

First off, it’s shown clearly that when the MC was with his ex, he didn’t care about himself, didn’t care about school, and literally never let her into his apartment—not even once. So what kind of relationship was that, really? Sorry, but he was a complete mess. Not some misunderstood softboy—just avoidant and emotionally unavailable.

And suddenly, right after the breakup, he becomes the star of the school? In just a few weeks? All thanks to a brilliant tutor? Come on. That’s not character growth—that’s plot magic.

Now, putting those glaring issues aside... I’ll admit something. The story is pretty well-written. The narration flows, it manages to spark some emotion, and if you can forget you’ve seen this exact protagonist a hundred times before, it’s not a bad ride. I’ve definitely read worse.

I didn’t come away from it angry that I wasted my time. Annoyed, yes—but not empty. I didn’t lose anything by reading it, and I even had a decently engaging evening. That said, I fully admit: I might just be burnt out on this type of story. If this had been my first time encountering the trope, maybe I’d be over the moon with it.

But for me? It’s just another reheated meal—tasty enough, but I know exactly what’s in it and I’m a bit tired of the flavor. <<less

Personally, I found the story to be wholesome. The character development was well written for this short and sweet story, mainly the MC, but we also got to see the perspectives of the FL and main side characters. Also, MC's best friend is the best wingman. It was a bit predictable as it follows tropes found in similar stories, but overall, this was a good read with a happy ending.

Kudos to the translators as well
