The side couple evanson x fz really gave me heart attack, I could not sleep, like I genuinely can’t believe they ended like this. The worst part is, the author just suddenly, CASUALLY, insert their end and it was very abrupt too with some nonsense like evanson misunderstanding fzx and fzx not wanting to clarify that things are not what it seems to be cus he can’t trust him...

LIKE ALL THIS CAN BE AVOIDED LIKE THEY CAN ACTUALLY BE TOGETHER BUT THERE’S NO CLOSURE AT ALL. Adding to the fact that it seems like they really REALLY won’t be able to get together because evanson would be leaving China and I was just... seething in anger... because with character like fzx, the type that’s cold and arrogant, when he falls in love and it doesn’t end well.. it just becomes very very heartbreaking like when he finally can love for real it becomes like this I-

honestly after this I just can’t focus with what’s happening to the main cp. I was literally so mad I start scanning trhough the rest of the chapters trying to find more clues, but sadly, there was none. it was just s*upid. I cried for this man. for a side couple who doesn’t even have 15% screentime.

My favourite was MC meticulous planning in coming out and revealing their relationship. MC wanted to give ML security in their relationship, that he truly loves him. MC didn’t want to wrong ML by keeping their relationship a secret.

The topic of consent. So context, ML is the type of person that takes everything people say at face value. For example MC’s friend jokingly asks him to consider dating him (friend) because MC is super lucky and wants MC’s luck rubbed off of him. ML gets upset because he thinks friend is actually interested in MC and wants to steal him.

Back on the topic of consent, MC just teaches ML that sometimes people say no but they actually mean yes. Why? Because around the beginning, MC was joking around with ML but ML got sad instead (or something) because ML thought MC was being serious. This bites MC in the bu*t in the future and can’t get out of bed. Thankfully there was no blatant dub-con or smut for that matter. At most MC says no and gets mad, ML still pushes it playing dumb saying “but you said no means yes”. MC technically does not give consent but heavily implies that he is still willing to snu-snu.

fang zhongxi got his happy ending too. Some things need to be verbalised between lovers. Only then can trust be formed

Seriously, who is doing the translation for this, if it can even be called a translation. I ended up reading this via MTL, and I can assure you the quality is about the same, if not even better. I feel so upset for the author, knowing their work was butchered in such a way. I'm beyond frustrated... jesus. The translation was filled with weird jargon, sometimes unreadable sentences, and some parts didn't even make sense. A beautiful piece of prose reduced to something a middle-schooler would write, are you not ashamed?

Edit: THANK GOD I LURK ON MULTIPLE DIFFERENT SITES. I found that there's an alternative translation on Chrysanthemum Garden (bless them fr, their translations are always solid). Did a quick comparison between both versions, and HOLY, I heavily suggest you read CG's version instead. I wasn't aware of how badly the context and meanings were changed, but if you read both versions, you'll see that a lot was changed. (CG's version is so much better, and there's even explanations and footnotes for why they translated certain phrases and sentences in a certain way) Some discrepancies include: Huo Qu not being the Huo family's biological son??? Which was not true. Chapter titles were somehow even translated wrongly, which is abhorrent. I can't remember the rest, but yeah. The only disappointment and gripe I have with CG is the fact that they're only at chapter 24 (as of me writing this review), but the upside is they don't split the chapters into god knows how many parts. If you want to read the novel as the author intended, go read CG's version, but just keep in mind that it's not completed. So maybe read MTL, then if you want something more solid, wait for the newer translation to have more chapters.
