The Duke couldn't let people near him as his darkness power would suck the life out of people nearby whenever he gets emotional. Basically he wants the FL to avoid him so she doesn't get killed when his power suddenly goes haywire like that one incident in the story with FL where he suddenly started losing control and the whole area went dark and starts sucking the life of the area around him that FL had to lent a hand to stablized him then.
After realising that his power is unstable which causes his mother's death, he tries his best to limit his emotions so that no one else gets harm by his powers again. OgFL is supposed to bring him happiness as his lover but because of the FL intervention and her divine power, the Duke lost his fated lover and ends up all alone by himself.
