I Quit Being The Devoted Supporting Male Character

Everyone knows that in any romance novel, apart from the leading couple, there’s always a certain type of male supporting character.

He’s either hopelessly devoted to the heroine, tirelessly helping her no matter the cost—even if it means putting up with infidelity. When the heroine is misunderstood by the male lead, he steps in to clear her name. When she faces setbacks in her career, he’s there to support her.

But in the end? All he gets is a single line from the heroine: “I’ve always seen you as a brother.”

Or, he’s the one opposing the male lead, only to be crushed by the couple’s so-called underdog victory, left with nothing but ruins.

Gu Jingyu suddenly finds himself in the role of one of these tragic male supporting characters.

The domineering CEO heroine declares, “You’re like a brother to me…”

Gu Jingyu retorts, “Thanks, but my mom only gave birth to one child.”

The time-traveling heroine offers him a snack with a bright smile. “I made this vegetarian jerky especially for you. I’m sure you’ll love it!”

Gu Jingyu stares at her in silence.

Do I look that gullible?

The plucky underdog protagonist from a cultivation story roars, “Just you wait—thirty years east of the river, thirty years west of the river! Don’t underestimate the poor!”

Gu Jingyu doesn’t even bother to respond. He locks the protagonist away until his own ascension.

I don't know how to actually evaluate this so I'll just say from my current personal opinion.

Personally a 4 stars but I don't want to lower the rating too much at this point. People should read first.

It's a good and refreshing read.

... more>> Tldr at the bottom.

---

There's a big change going on with MC and the whole background of this quick transmigration story. Everything is kinda anticlimactic I would say but I like how it's different. The stories just go according to the mood of the author, anyways, he's the boss.

About the MC;

Spoiler

the MC is cold in the beginning as he has some sort of emotional disorder or something I forgot the name but he was not able to feel emotions. BUT he is constantly trying to fix his psychological problem in most of the worlds he went to in the first few arcs until he eventually change.

[collapse]

The MC was someone who's unfeeling and indifferent at first but always want to be the same as normal people. At the end, I reckon you'll think the MC will really end up mediocre as compared to other Gary Stu QT novels.

Spoiler

Cuz he fixed his problem. He's now (at that point I read) the same as everyone else and can feel emotion.

[collapse]

But the author mentioned already he is not a Gary Stu. He wants to make the MC someone who can accept protection.

Spoiler

He learned how to protect in his first world, and finally able to accept protection in one of the latter world, where he was at the lowest point in all his lives, where he got drugged and experienced hell but got protected by his (current) family. I was especially touched at this point that I legit cried especially when he finally realized he actually had once felt 'romantic love' toward someone in his earlier world (at that time he still didn't know it, I WANT TO SPOIL BUT I'LL STOP, don't wanna elaborate much, go read)

. He remembers her until even the latest arc. I WAS TOUCHED.

[collapse]

So I like how I don't have to think too much and read with light heart.

There are some xenophobic signs everywhere but sorry I don't really want to care so much about that in novels where everything was suppose to be fiction. Take it with a pinch of salt.

---

Tldr; this story has a growing MC who changes drastically, he did not go OOC, he cured his illness. Has drastic change in world background. Has 2d villains, written with primary school kids mentality, and have anticlimactic stories. Don't leave bad reviews if you don't like it. The author said either you give constructive criticism or just go away quietly. <<less

Novel absolutely not recommended to read.

The whole story is ridiculous and utter nonsense.

An extremely empty QT that’s mainly just MC going “wow, the hero and heroine are s*upid” and “haha I would never be as dumb as OG Mc!”

At the same time MC is somehow Godlike unbeatable and even better than the supposed “male protagonist.” There’s never a shred of doubt MC can’t curbstomp and absolutely no challenge. In fact, if MC really wanted to avoid the plot he could’ve easily moved or not gotten involved but always has to... more>> whine about it while sticking around. The online Chinese chat window into his world also has absolutely no value during the streams.

Honestly, an inferior QT story that is all about pointless fodder bashing by a boring protagonist that begins to seem mean-spirited by the third arc. Tr*sh through and through. -900Quintillion. <<less

I don't really like it. The MC annoyed me with the way he interacts with the relatives of the og owner. Like they would be talking to him and he would just sit there like an a-hole and be silent and would also distance himself from them. He is literally causing these people unnecessary pain/upsetting them because of the way he is treating them. Also the cultivation arc was completely plagiarized from another QT novel except for a few things they decided to change up. He acted completely different from... more>> the way he usually acts in other arcs which is just evidence that it was plagiarized. It was unnecessary. The MC is boring. He acts OP in the first couple of arcs and then nothing. He has no golden fingers. This story is just a mess. The author writes about him going to therapy for his emotional problems, but then it goes out the window at times. It's just ridiculous. I meant to rate this 1 star. Don't waste your time reading. It was a waste of time for me. I really wanted to like it because of the no romance aspect, but I just can't continue. At the time I'm writing this review it's still ongoing and I will not be finishing it. <<less

Honestly speaking this started out fine and ended up tr*sh. The first few arcs at least try to stick to the 2nd ML setting. But after that it's a free for all and anything apparently goes. Established settings are chucked out of the window.

It feels like the author just writes whatever they want without any regard to continuity. For example in at least 2 arcs in the beginning the MC is OP in the business world and good at predicting what the villains will do but now suddenly he's like... more>> a new born calf who can't see a revenge plan coming that is EXTREMELY obvious to the reader. The MC has the same amount of info that we as a reader do and yet sits around twiddling his thumbs while all hell is set loose. There's an author's note that says the author wanted the MC to experience being protected for once and the MC is not OP. This is ridiculous. MC HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT OP TILL NOW. It literally feels the author woke up one day and decided oooooo I want to give MC a tough time, too much smooth sailing is bad for character development. That's perfectly fine. But at least make the challenge believable. Let the situation be difficult enough that we as a reader would believe the MC can't handle it.

Don't presume your readers are idiots.

MC's individuality gets lost in the QT setting. It feels like I am reading about different people in different arcs.

    1. TLDR: Okay to read for 2-3 arcs, not worth anymore time.

From the very first arc, it was clear the author lacked direction

    • The premise of the system, lord god, streaming, etc. Was so unnecessarily complex.
    • The MC went ooc & was soon discovered but no repercussions.
    • Genre switched from counterattack to a vile thriller about human traffickers. Was it that necessary just to prove MC was becoming less emotionless?
    • Counterattack isn't cathartic if the antagonists are brain dead or equally controlled by the plot.
    • I.e. Was domestic violence the only way to make FL regret? The author didn't treat any female well in this story.

The MC has a type of emotional disassociate mental illness that potray him as stereotype ice berg. But he's actively getting psychological help and counselling to become normal. The story arcs r typical but the MC has good character development and from strong n alone to start getting help from family.

Since MC transmigrated from world to world due to the original body grieves he try to fulfil those wish but also respect the parents and family of the original body.

Honestly very sweet cause he don't know how to act around... more>> those family n he try to take care of them cause he feel that he took over the body

Also since MC would die as when the original body supposed to die, thus making effort to not make the parents n family to feel guilty.

Slowly we get to see that MC is not stoic or the icy beauty that only good at business, he's so bad at poetry and video games, eg. stuck on lvl3 of tetris. He starts to feel frustration and expectation after many world of therapy

Btw the MTL is very well translated

My only dissatisfaction is that I don't get to see how surrounding people react when MC had to leave, the sadistic part of my heart feels so stifled so reduce 1 star

Spoiler

favorite arc is where MC transmigrated into Xianxia world where he was abondoned as a baby n got pick up by a beggar. He got adopted into Sword sec and his teacher is so unreasonable and protective of MC. Makes my inside warm to see MC got pampered so much.....

MC was also apparently from a post apocalyptic world where they gotta fight for everything and cannibalism is the norm, thus explaining why MC is so cold n disassociate with emotions

It started out interesting, although everything about the system was a little confusing, the live broadcast, the audience from various worlds, etc., none of it is explained clearly and it doesn't seem like the author is very clear about the background of his novel or what he wants. do with that, but the MC is OP and I like that, I also like how he steps away from the plot and lets it derail on its own, because honestly sometimes the plots of novels are so s*upid that people can't... more>> understand how the protagonists stay together and live happily, that makes no sense!!! In the end, it is true that it is only through the help or extraordinarily timely intervention of the secondary character that they can, without him they certainly should not do so well, especially if it is a s*upid and cliché novel like the one in the first arc that included imprisonment, romance in the office, car accidents, anesia, etc, etc, etc. It was normal for the plot to derail because it was and is very, very s*upid!!! and it only worked thanks to the secondary character. That's why I really liked the novel at the beginning but as the arcs progress it becomes increasingly boring and more incoherent compared to the first arc. Before, it was understandable that the plot would derail without the secondary character because from the beginning she was a bad character. plot, that was the charm, the irony that without the secondary character the deficiencies of the story would be noticed, he was the catalyst, but later, more than a catalyst, it feels as if the protagonists ruined themselves by their own s*upidity It has nothing to do with the MC and the MC participates less and less, sometimes it just appears as a random comment on what he is doing, nothing makes much sense anymore and I didn't want to continue reading, it lost its charm for me, the reason why I started reading is no longer there... 🤷‍♀️ <<less

The novel starts out very nicely, MC is Op, smart and powerful and I enjoyed that.

To me this book was just a breeze, refreshing and different from other QT novels.

It is also my second QT novel which the MC is Male, so I am a little biased towards it. However, I do agree with some of the reviews, the MC does become a little boring, he does not seem so Op but what I loved was the character development, the author was very obvious and straightforward about MC's personality from... more>> the beginning. As the story progresses we see how he learns emotion.

If it was any other authors they would be so vague that they can't decide whether the MC is an antihero or a villain or whether they are cold or have an outgoing personality, loner or not.

It wasn't the best but still enjoyable, I loved all the arcs, my favorite was of course the 2nd and 3rd arc and one he was the emperor.
Spoiler

I think in that arc, he's brother had hypnotised him into liking him that he'd do anything for him, and of course there was chaos and all this was because of the female lead

[collapse]

I recommend to read if you are interested in a Male lead QT. <<less

I have only reached the third arc so I can't say for sure if what I say applies to the entire book, but so far the main character is one of the types I can't really care that much about, that is the always uncaring unemotional boring business genius that can't do anything but business so throws aside everything the original owner of the body has to go and do his business, most of the plot is just watching what happens if this character were completely absent from the original... more>> plot. On top of that the only time he has actually been the 'devoted supporting male character' is the first arc. The second arc he was a cannon fodder and the third the heroines white moonlight. <<less

The novel is about a protagonist that lacks the ability to feel emotions. The novel is a little different to other world hopping novels since the MC doesn't like getting into direct conflict with the main characters of the original novel.

As he continues to travel to different worlds he slowly starts to develop empathy and understanding about people and feelings. The novel sometimes does go a bit sidetracked where he doesn't always end up as a second male or the original novel isn't as involved with the plot.

the novel is... more>> more of a slice of life slowly unveiling the past of MC and what the system live stream is really about.

You can see from the start that the protagonist is a high eq and iq character with lacking emotions but he also has his flaws which would generally easy for normal people to be able to do. There are also parts where he doesn't just suddenly become able to do something, the skills which he has from being a businessman and doing investment has been reused in later arcs and if he needs to do something like become a movie director he has actually put time and effort into learning skills for that.

it's an easygoing novel which dives into a bit of morals. Don't expect it to have much counterattacking or anything like that.

The translator has done a good job making the words flow and has also put in effort to analyse the chapter and put in extra fun facts about culture at the end of each chapter.

edit: although the novel lacks direction it still has its advantages such as good writing and character development. It's better than nothing for someone that reads a lot and lacks other novels to read. <<less
