I read this last year and I absolutely love it!! I know maybe for some it won't be their cup of tea but for me this kind of yandere male lead is quite realistic as he really never changed and he possesses qualities which shows how he really is a yandere. I just made this review right now because I came back to reread and turns out the link of the translated version by ChocoCats was missing in here.

I feel like I read a different book from the rest of the reviews...

Let’s start with the matter of POV. It’s in first-person and switches between the MC and her step-brother. Ironically enough, I felt that the brother’s POV had more emotion to it (despite him being emotionless for the most part) as the MC was a bit... head in the clouds? The ages are set at around early teenage years for the protagonists so I guess it checks off but the way the MC thinks can be a... more>> bit jarring.

Regarding the plot itself, the premise is fun and fresh but it fell flat by the end. There was this huge build-up from the countdown of days and yet... something was palpably missing. I feel the transmigration, “manga” su*cide-mu*der, and the “manga” protagonists could have been dived deeper on.

Maybe I’m just not used to JP novels but overall it felt pretty meh to me. Plus I didn’t feel much of the horror factor either. <<less

The manga was interesting and art was nice so I was intrigued to read the novel.

It was fun, at times. However, the novel feels like a Y/N novel. Is just me? Lol.

Translation is okay. It's clear. I think the problem was with the narration? It's boring and doesn't actually let you use your imagination. The words lack emotion. It doesn't have the feeling that you should feel when reaching or reading the climax of the story. It doesn't even have the feeling of apprehension that you should have when the... more>> climax is approaching.

And the way that the novel was transitioned isn't interesting. It's nice to read in the male lead's point of view but it wasn't if what he's narrating is a past event that happened last chapter.

It's too plain. Lack of descriptions and emotions. That's why it feels like a Y/N novel.

It's hard to connect with the characters because they are just characters. It doesn't make you feel that they are human. For me, I can't even feel the creepiness of the male lead or his obsession with Mai.

Anyways, I still like Makoto's inner monologues on what he thinks about the people around him. <<less

The way to cuteeeee, if you craving for something crazy obsession that received well, this is it. If you read it from manga, around chapter 7 manga equal to around 30 novel. I also really like chococat translation, that make the story easy to read and entertaining.

To summarize, you basically have a romance between the little (stepsister) and the psychopath mu*derer big brother. Mai, the imouto tries to rehabilitate her brother by providing him with "surprises" of all kinds. Makoto, the brother is going to kill his entire high school class if Mai doesn't change him in time!

A kind of exciting plot, but the plot is just not that good. Mai's already very weird for trying to save her brother in weird ways. Apparently providing Makoto with random surprises like a piece of ginger in his... more>> burger is going to make him a good person. That's actually fine. Mai having a bit of quirkiness makes the novel more interesting, but it's actually the romance that's really weird.

Kurobe kind of just goes from someone who views everyone as insects, to being mushy and heads over heels for Mai. Now, actually, Kurobe is a good character otherwise. The depiction of Kurobe as a cruel, merciless, and emotionless robot is driven home quite clearly. His monologue really compliments his appearance as shown to Mai. I can kind of get behind Kurobe randomly falling in love with the "quirky" Mai, but at least make Mai believable then.

I get that Mai's character setting was that she was in love with her brother to begin with, but her attempts of reformation of Kurobe are quite pathetic. I suppose it is a massive win in her part to have Kurobe go from a mu*derer that kills everyone and su*cides to just being emotionally manipulative, psuedo-blackmailing, gaslighting, and extremely manipulative towards Mai, but Mai kind of just takes it all in as his "Charm" I suppose. After "reforming" Kurobe so he doesn't kill anyone or doesn't desire to anymore, Mai kind of just... stops. The fact that Mai is actually in love with someone that she knows is a psychopath is weird, but the fact that she can change him but doesn't really deign or find it weird after they get together is a whole nother thing.

If the novel was bit more slow in characterizing each person and understanding their emotions towards others better, then I think it would have performed a lot better. The fact is that it just seems like there's a disconnect in events that happen and what characters perceive to happen. Mai just happens to be in love with Kurobe from the beginning, and Kurobe falls in love with Mai out of screen. Then what the hell is the romance if both peoples' feelings are developed off screen? <<less

I would give this a 3.5/5 because the lead-up was great but the ending fell flat. This is pretty much my first time reading and completing a webnovel so I don't have much to go off from. The way this novel explains how an emotionless psycopath like Patrick Bateman becomes a hopeless romantic with a twisted idea of love was interesting, but not executed as well as I had hoped.

The change was rather radical for me. Since it took Makoto witnessing his step-sister get hit by a bus for him to start feeling the human emotion called love. I was hoping it would have been more gradual. There really wasn't much internal monologue from Makoto explaining why he felt he changed. Suddenly gaining the ability to care about another person. I personally don't like the trope where someone falls in love with another and cannot find any reason why they did. The horror aspect was also lacking. Unlike in the Saya Jigoku manga Mai spends her year referencing, Makoto doesn't actually kill or harm anyone in this life. The most violence we get is him squashing his insect collection out of frustration for his new found feelings. It would have been nicer if more time was spent describing romantic moments between Mai and Makoto. Any time they had any physical moment together it was described very simply and briefly. Had the climax been more exciting (the day of the death game) I feel like I could rate this higher.
