Lux Zeldia.

Born into a ducal family and possessing the ultimate-class ability of the ‘Evil Eye,’ Lux meets a tragic end in all routes, being killed by the protagonist as a mid-boss and having his eye stolen by the final boss.

I, who disliked only one character in the beloved game ‘Blaze Fantasy,’ was reincarnated as that very character, Lux.

However, I think to myself:

‘Could this be a chance to witness the interactions between my favorite characters up close?’

‘Is this the best position one could hope for as a fan?’

In order to put an end to Lux’s misdeeds, become the supporting Mob A who watches over the protagonist and heroines during their school life, and to become stronger so that my Evil Eye won’t be taken by the final boss, I decide to give it my all.

My dream is to enjoy watching which heroine the protagonist chooses, all from the perspective of a classmate!

However, due to the moves caused by my knowledge as a fan of the original work, I inadvertently raise romantic flags with the heroines who should have been destined for destruction, turning what should have been disaster flags into love flags.”

Not a particularly great read, and I have a few big complaints.

  1. The start was decent enough, but unfortunately the story never actually became good. Didn't really appreciate the way they did the 5 year timeskip either, since it made the relationships with the female leads come off as 'he was nice to me / noteworthy a single time and now I'm in love with him forever' despite most of them having minimal contact with the MC on a single day and then not seeing him for 5 years. Like, I get that a timeskip was needed to bring the MC out of elementary school age, I just don't like that it was done while cutting off contact with the female leads, since it makes the relationships with them appear a bit more superficial and shallow. There was one reference that the MC and one of the female leads exchanged some letters during this period, but that was it. No mentions of contact with the others. No visits from anyone during the period during the time skip that the MC briefly came back to the country.
  2. As usual for a story like this, the original MC was sidelined entirely and has no favorable relations with the original female leads. However, the way this was done was weird in my opinion. It was stated that, due to something the new MC inadvertently did during the time skip, the old MC's father didn't die and this had a large impact on his personality, but we were introduced to the old MC before the time skip, and were shown that he was kind of an ass there that the heroines didn't like before leaving the scene, all without any interference, unintentional or otherwise, from the new MC causing this to happen. These kinds of stories all love to focus on how the isekai villain somehow usurps the plot, often by complete accident, but there was no real reason why the old MC just abandoned the plot events that caused him to meet the female leads in the first place. Also, when the old MC eventually meets the new MC, I don't really like their interactions. Mostly because the old MC took one single look at the new MC, said 'You're stronger than the others here, huh' and then proceeded to become the new MC's biggest fanboy. It just seems kind of weird to me, to be honest; an almost creepy attachment forming between those two based on.... nothing.
  3. Finally, my last large gripe with the novel comes from the combat. In the text we are repeatedly shown how X person is really strong or how Y person's technique or magic is super duper OP, or that the MC has a billion mana points or whatever, but it is all meaningless. When it comes to actual fights versus bosses / monsters, not just spars or mock combat against other students, none of it matters. It doesn't matter how one of the female leads is a sword god. Her opponent is randomly immune to physical attacks. Until she gets a mid combat powerup and instantly cuts it in half. It doesn't matter that the princess has powerful and varied magic and can combine elements for crazy strong effects. The opponent she is fighting is just randomly immune to specifically all the regular elemental magic, which is what she uses. Until she gets a mid combat powerup and remembers how to use her super special family magic that one shots the enemy. Until she forgets it again later so the same exact setup can be used for a different enemy. It doesn't matter that the MC has an absurd amount of magic power to fuel his spells with, since his opponent is just randomly immune to the darkness element, which is all he can use. Until he gets a mid combat powerup and mind controls the enemy and instantly ends the fight. It's stuff like that, that happens constantly, and just cheapens whatever combat experience is going on. Their abilities get really overhyped in descriptions by themselves and everyone around them, up until they keep on fighting enemies that are randomly specifically immune to everything they can do. And then they get a mid combat boost and overcome it anyways, usually in a way that instantly defeats the encounter. It gets stale really, really fast when it is used for basically every fight of any consequence.

It's exactly what you'd expect from the title. Villain Reincarnation -> Isekai OP Harem nonsense. If it was only that, then I'd think it's just fantasy fulfillment fluff.

The problem is the characters aren't relatable, or likeable. The characters other than the MC don't make decisions that make sense, they make decisions that move the story forward. The one character with a good backstory was turned into a throw away villain?
