Yan Qing transmigrated into a melodramatic cultivation novel, and arrived during the childhood of the powerful and tragic villain, who was immensely popular among readers. When he grew up, the villain was brilliantly talented and incredibly handsome; when he was small, the villain was pitiful, and almost starved to death one year in midwinter.

Danger lurked around every corner in the cultivation world. In order to survive, Yan Qing could only display all kinds of outstanding skills, pretending to be well-behaved when he was in a superior position, and pretending to be pitiful when he was in a subpar position. He lived with the lovely little villain as two souls in one body, from the time when they disdained each other to the time when they lived and died together. He relied on swindling and lying to stay alive.

Afterwards, he found an opportunity to slip loose of his bonds, and the two mutually-irritated men parted ways.

After Yan Qing died and his soul scattered, he thought he would be able to return to the modern world. He didn’t expect that he would reincarnate into a small sect, and become the harsh, malicious cannon fodder who had a tragic ending???

The cannon fodder had a crush on the villain, so he forced a marriage on him.

However, the villain seemed pure as the moonlight on the surface, but was dark and ruthless to his bones. He could love no one other than the main character shou. The cannon fodder died of illness in bed, in so much pain he didn’t want to live, while his husband, the villain, indifferently played the qin in the courtyard.

Yan Qing almost spewed out his mouthful of water. Wonderful, Xie Shiyi. If I’d known earlier that you were such a s*umbag, back when we were in Blackwater Alley, I’d have drunk water from the chamber pot every day with your body.

***

Xie Shiyi had once fallen into the abyss, kneeling and begging, no better than a dog, losing all of his dignity for a chance at life. One other person had seen this pathetic manner of his.

When he was young, he was sensitive and proud, and they often quarreled because of their different views. In his heart, he vowed that he would kill him one day.

But once the other man really vanished, he sat on Southmount Peak for a long time in silence.

He sat there until the plum blossoms had fallen, the snow cleared and the clouds dispersed. Only then did he quietly take up his sword and leave.

From then on, the world no longer knew the boy who lived as humbly as an ant in Blackwater Alley, Xie Shiyi.

There was only the young talent of Desireless Sect, who was cold and untouchable, Xie Ying.

Man, when a review reeks of zoomer with their emoji usage.

I would say this is different from Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation in terms of relationship dynamics between MC and ML. In Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation you could tell they were good childhood friends. In the beginning of this story, they hated each other as kids but later, from an outside perspective, we can tell they like each other and we get ML's point of view towards the end. The MC and ML themselves are unclear about their relationship, especially... more>> MC.

The enemies part, between MC and ML, is a misconception one character thinks the other person is thinking of themselves. Which I thought was handled well with the idea of nightmares.

Didn't Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation have flashback after flashback to explain their relationship? Why are you so impatient? The flashbacks are important to set up the relationship between MC and ML because the author is creating tension between them. Typically I dislike misunderstandings because they are really annoying but I like the way it was done in this story.

I liked the concept the author was going with the nightmares. The 5 chapters dedicated to the side characters are important to the lore of the nightmares in my opinion.

There might have been some flaws idk. I liked the story as a whole. I appreciated the worldbuilding, relationship dynamics, and character building. <<less

This is an excellent story. It has a good plot pacing, interesting background intrigue, and lively characters. The main pair is a very rare case of two people who stand on an equal ground from the very beginning to the end; they both experience the same hardships, both reach a high power level at the same time, both have a position and existence outside the other. Even more rare for such couples, neighter of them is a clean, righteous, rigid person, and nighter is a scheming, cruel, evil person. There... more>> is no chaising, no fights, no betrayal, no love through tears, no possessive control of the other. Both are people with their own ideas and convictions, who act rather than wait for someone. Their past is bittersweet, their present is soft but has a sharp note of despair, which slowly gets resolved as the events unfold. All the while, the story doesn't focus solely on the main pair; it gives enough attention to the characters around, weaving the narrative. <<less

Writing this review so that others would give it a chance as there's only been a 1* review so far. Personally think it's a pretty interesting read so far.

However, I can totally understand the 1 star review above as this is not exactly an Enemies to Lovers book - at least based on what I've read till now, the "enemies" part is more of misunderstandings and they're mostly in past.

All in all, if you're looking for a book to pass time or looking for a new read, then this might... more>> be the book for you.

But if you're here for the enemies to lovers tag (eg. Novels such as QJJ) then this might not be the book for you :) <<less

I read the review that said it's similar to Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, so I couldn't help to compare it while reading. It wasn't a good experience. Oh I wish I didn't read the review. However I kept reading and let's say it's far different from Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. The theme, the mysteries, the relationship between characters are all different. I ended up binge reading it in two days. It's worth the read.

I remember I found the Chinese raw of this story while trying to find another one, (if I am not wrong it actually was created a comic too, but after chapter 8 if never got updated) and after that I started reading it, and I literally fall in love like I will recommend everyone that the story is really very good! Definitely worth a try on this story!!

I like one of the main lesson this story gave, that Evil resides in everyone including the gods and goddesses. The nightmare that killed thousands of people in this story did not come from a monster or like a demon lord or something in fact it came from all of the Gods who would be considered as good themselves, they also have their own dark thoughts and dark side which give birth to the ultimate evil that stays with Yan Qing, who thrives from evilness of everyone!

I need to read again to remember lol...

This is one of the best novels I've read. The author made wonderful use of psychology and a mixture of past and present timelines. I like how every detail in the story has a part. It entails a distinct cause and effect aspect that makes you want to read and examine it again.

I don't want to say too much since it will affect your appreciation of the novel.

What I don't like is how the secrets or background story was not revealed to other people. However it works with the ML's... more>> character of not caring of others' opinions. <<less

This is a good novel, as of this moment there were only 20+ chapters that have been translated and I had to Google translate the rest. It turned out to be one of the rarer cases where I found reading MTL wouldn't do the story justice, even though the translation was pretty good. Usually when reading more generic stories I feel content with a bumpy MTL ride, but with this one I hope to reread a properly translated version after a few years and at that time write a good... more>> review. Anything less would be a travesty. Absolutely wonderful main leads here, they were amazing. <<less

This would've been easily 5 stars but minus 1 star except for one fact. That is I don't like the fact we didn't start the story when they first met when they are 5. We are introduce to their story through flashbacks.

we didn't get the emotional impact that it deserved because we live in the present timeline and know that everything is fine and we feel nothing about it which we shouldn't. I feel more emotional about the sisters story because we got the live version of the outcome.

The novel should've been split Into two parts in my opinion. The time when they grew up together and all the events. 2nd part present day.

I know the author want to keep it short so the all plot points intertwine right near the end. But this book was her best work in my opinion.

I love all the characters they all have their own personalities and depth. I feel I can tell what their story are and put a name on them.

The plot was written well, easy to follow and interesting to keep track, the emotional entanglements was worth spending time to dwell on. Even inner debates about good and evil. Which I find very worth debating.

MC and ML emotional story line is well written. Everything was worth the emotional toll. Through the dislike, through the misunderstanding , through parting at death, through all the mutual sacfrices. My heart went through the rollercoaster. It was one of rare occasions I enjoyed the ride.

Love both MC and ML! It's not always I like both where their personalities and actions both suits my taste. MC Is like a wonder child do what he likes. ML is cold but has his playful side which only comes out facing MC. Their interactions is so funny and Interesting. I really wish we read through their childhood events. MC taking over MLs body than act cute to beg for food LOL.

Great Novel recommend for a read, a good choice for cultivation leisure. <<less

Thank you to the author and to the translators for bringing this novel into the world!! I really enjoyed this reincarnation with a twist, and the CP is so fun to read! I’ve read my fair share of novels in the BL cultivation genre, and the way the author makes the world and characters feels like a breath of fresh air; it’s honestly made me really crave reading more from this setting, and I haven’t felt that need in a hot minute now.

I think the person who left the 1-star... more>> (?) review deleted, but I still wanted to put in my 2-cents on the issue (?) about it being similar to MDZS. Like other reviews note, the main characters (predominantly MC) have similar energy or personality to the main characters of MDZS. Someone said in a review for WWX to come get his brother (Yan Qing), and I definitely agree! I can even see similarities in overarching novel genres and themes (cultivation, mystery “solving”, who is good? vs who is evil?, et cetera...), but I absolutely would NOT call them the same novel. I Returned to the Immortal’s Youth plays with its own premise and holds steadfastly to the characters’ own morals and opinions. There are some unique (to my personal knowledge) plot devices, like the creation of “demonseeds”, that make this novel its own in such a saturated genre. I really enjoy the way the novel plays with present day and flashbacks, so that it feels like the reader is also putting pieces together at the same time the characters are as well!

That being said, for people who are looking for recommendations of similar novels I would point them towards works such as MDZS or Transmigrating into a Mob Character to Rehabilitate the Villain Plan due to similar settings or similar character personalities/synergy. Cool-Ascetic character x Smart-Sassy character is a super common pair synergy especially for the cultivation genre. Mystery or uncovering multi-layered conspiracies is absolutely par for the course in the cultivation genre. Even if similar beats occur, that doesn’t mean the exact same song is playing.

tl;dr 5 stars would absolutely recommend to BL cultivation lovers! It’s a very fun put the pieces of the multi-layered conspiracy within the Upper and lower realms together through the lens of a CP with a <<love to “hate” / “hate” to love or will they/won’t they >> dynamic! <<less

Finally made an account to leave a review for this. I started this without much expectations, but was pleasantly surprised.

The world building in this xianxia is a little unique, and carries certain heavier topics than just cauldrons, a lil along the lines of the manhua "Accidentally Saved the Jianghus's Public Enemy" 《不小心救了江湖公敌》that slowly bleeds into every corner of the story.

As for the MC and ML, there is some unreliable narratorship going on, but not severely to the point of jumping around plot points. I love the fact that the MC... more>> and ML actually communicate when they need to, according to the development of the plot. There isn't much prolonged, unnecessary or forced beating around the bush, you run I chase, regarding their feelings, and when things become clearer to ML - who canonically possesses an ability to see through human hearts - doesn't beat around the bush and confronts MC to clarify things. I cannot reiterate how much I love this, because communication is a two way street here. (And have you seen an ML saying the words "I'm sorry" to the MC's face while both are fully 100% lucid and serious, no one bleeding to death rn??? I gasped.) MC and ML try to talk things out when they need to, and MC is self aware of his insecurities. The moments of deflection don't feel forced from their points of views; they both had reasons to hide their thoughts and actions, rooted in severe consequences and uncertainty at the point it happens, so it doesn't frustrate as the reader much. Basically, the psychologies of both of them made sense at every milestone, reflecting in the paths they chose.

Both MC and ML are rationale characters, but also very much in each other's pockets. MC has a cavalier attitude and often plays the "outsider", believing he comes from the modern world, and I enjoyed the little twist the author had with that transmigration point. While MC is almost too cavalier about things in humorous ways, it doesn't truly stem from the transmigration, but because of the experiences of the first life he had in this world. He has seen the ugliness of the world, and the fickleness of human nature, and has bigger things to fear.

One last thing! I don't think it's a spoiler bc it's mentioned in the first few chapters, but MC, when he lived as a piggybacking soul in ML's body,

had no memories, so both of them were mentally of young age, and grew up together step by step.

In a world where "nightmares" and "demonseeds" exists, this becomes both their greatest strength and weakness.

Havent enjoyed such a xianxia novel in a while, so this was a pleasant surprise. The small downside is the resolution towards the end had me a little confused and felt like we skipped a chapter or two. Also wish we got to see more of their younger life, but that's where the real dog blood drama is, and it would be excruciating and make it a more stressful/heartwrenching read.

TL;DR despite some of the darker worldbuilding themes, this was a nice, relaxing read that doesnt leave you too stressed imo. There's not much dogblood suffering in the current timeline, minimal shallow face slapping - just enough to make you laugh or cheer but not repetitive. Comes with angsty side stories with complicated characters where no one is truly fully evil or good

This is one of the best danmei novels I’ve ever read. I’ve went through a rollercoaster of emotions with this novel.

The side characters were exceptionally well-written, with their stories and entanglements adding depth and richness to the plot. As for the main characters, their dynamic and interactions were interesting, making me laugh and cry along the way LOL.

That said, I loved the author’s unique approach, where mysteries unfold gradually, clues are woven into every event, and the cause-and-effect relationships perfectly intact.

I absolutely adore Yan Qing (MC) ! He kinda reminds... more>> me of Wei Wuxian, though, of course, they are different in many aspects. <<less

This is a whole five stars.

Although the translation was a bit hard to read it is an absolute gem.

I was like "wei wuxiang come get your brother!!"

It brought tears of joy to my eyes and I almost cussed at my past self for passing up on this novel for sometimes now.

I love you Yan Qing. My love!!

Don't know why I can't rate five stars by the way.
