This was a decent read, nothing special but still good.

It's a story about confronting your traumatic past and revenge, Van, the main character, was sold as a s*ave by the family that he once worked for and now as a free man after winning 100 fights as a gladiator, wishes to attain true freedom and revenge.

The best part of this novel are the more introspective moments where the cast looks back on their past and what they regret or wish for. It also helps that the scope of the novel... more>> is really small, there aren't any world-ending threats or great conspiracies shaking the world, so all the focus is on how the characters deal with their emotions and current situation. There are some plot threads on bigger things that happened in the past but they are mainly used to further develop the world.

Spoiler

Now to dwelve into spoiler territory. One of the issues that I have with the story is that all the plot twists are incredibly obvious, like how Sonia didn't actually sell Van or how Bert is the one responsible for the tragedy that befell on Vivian's village. This makes the story very predictable which is something I personally dislike.

Spoiler

One point of contention a reader might have with this is work is the ending, which goes for the harem route, as Van ends up marrying El, Sonia and Arietta. I was fine with this since I understood that Van, despite the sins Sonia and mainly Arietta commited against him, still cared deeply about them, with their flaws and all and knew that they wanted what they thought was the best for him, even if their actions ended up affecting him negatively.

In short, if you want a series on the smaller side with some sweet emotional moments and a solid revenge plot that doesn't go the super-edgy route, I can reccomend this series, it's not going to blow your mind but it's a solid 6~7/10. <<less

Lmfao I can't even believe I wasted my time reading this. The only reason why I read to the end was out of respect for the author. I've read and written a lot of ass, so I can definitely say this novel is abysmal dogshit. It actually pissed me off so badly, so I will say this review isn't that objective. I'm not gonna spoiler tag anything because trust me, you don't want to read this novel. If you do, don't bother reading my review.

The main character, Van, has a... more>> pitiful story. Born as a back alley orphan, he becomes a servant for a noble lady by chance, is sold into s*avery as a test subject, sold to a coliseum to fight, and then, after winning 100 times, he's free, but he's actually not free at all. He follows his (former) master to the academy because his master, who supposedly set him free, is actually brainwashing him, and has accepted a professorship at the academy. He'll do some academy things, have an assassination attempt on him, and then go to the elves to kill their contaminated leader to purify the World Tree, and then becomes super duper strong.

Now, herein lies the first problem: in 124 chapters, the author barely did anything to develop the story. For one, one of the main plot points is that Sophia, the crazy magician, contaminates half of the Empire's land because she was looking for power or something (I forgot, so that's actually my fault; it was so pointless to the story that I didn't bother to remember), and then dies after a multi-race coalition defeats her. The important part is that because of her, Van is subjected to cruel experiments to modify his body to become a warrior who can lead the Empire and retake the lands. Except that doesn't f*cking happen, because the novel cuts off, pretty much insinuating that he will do that after he marries the three female leads. Aside from that, Sophia's effect on the story is contaminating the First Elf, and having her relics fall into Elle's hands because she's the only person who can purify the 900000 curses on Sophia's equipment.

An extension of the first problem: the setting. It's a typical fantasy world. Humans, elves, dwarves, etc. Aside from that, you don't really know much about the setting. There's the first academy, Jeoff, where some of the story happens, but there isn't really any other special place aside from the coliseum, a few basic places like mansions, and of course, the World Tree and the surrounding forest. There is no other nation. Hell, you don't really learn much about the Empire and its structure itself. How the f*ck can there be an empire, and the only mention of the royal family and its emperor is a random ass comment from Van? I can't even tell you what that comment was because I forgot; I just remember that he did make a comment about it. There's mana in the world, unsurprisingly, but you don't really learn anything about it. How does the mana work? There is no mention of circulation, ranks, what talent is required, etc., that you'd expect from a normal fantasy setting. There's sword energy, I guess. There's probably a little more to the setting that I remember, but it was not important enough for me to remember, most likely.

Then there's the characters themselves. Van's character is just lazy writing. As the protagonist, he's ultra-blessed with weapons (the type that barely needs to train), he has that super duper OP body which doesn't require him to have a lot of technical weapon training, since his body can just regenerate anything back anyways, and when he does get trained, he becomes stronger than the Sword Saint. All at the age of 18 (or maybe 19; the author doesn't really make time skips specifically defined). This guy hasn't even made it to 20 yet, and he's already the strongest in the world. Nice bro. I will point out that I've read plenty of novels where the MC becomes super duper strong at a young age, but usually those are regressor novels, which does make sense. The other instances are naturally talented main characters, but they are literally training or fighting to the death every single chapter. This is NOT happening here. Separately, Van's whole thing is that he lives to serve. He values others more than himself, which is pitiful, but not out of the ordinary. I'm not saying a male MC needs to be this ultra-chad, alpha male where he needs to dominate everything, but this shtick wasn't that fun to read either. This is important to know for the following paragraphs.

Sonia: The noble lady who dreams of meeting Van again. She thinks he was just lent out to another noble family and he'll be back eventually, because she was tricked by her father. Before this point in their childhood, Van is the literal reason for Sonia to be alive. Her father, Bert, left for some reason (I think it was to secure investors or something), and that resulted in mounting debts and all her servants leaving her, EXCEPT Van. If anything, Van actually has to risk his life to keep Sonia alive, and when they both die, because of Van's desire for Sonia's wellbeing, a literal Goddess blesses him with insane regeneration and healing abilities, so they both come back to life. Even though she's spent so much of her childhood with Van, is SAVED BY HIM, like the naive, dumb noble she is, she just 100% believes her father (when he returns) and forces Van to sign his contract into s*avery. Because of its extenuating circumstances, when she eventually ended up back with Van, I wasn't as irritated.

Vivian: Van's second love. After Van is betrayed by Sonia and is sold into s*avery, he meets Vivian and falls in love with her. To become free, for her 100th battle, she had to fight Van to the death. This is because the coliseum owners (Arietta's family) were losing the coliseum to some merchants, which scratched the major noble's pride, so they decided to tr*sh the sh*t out of it before giving it to the merchants or whatever. If there are any compliments to be made in this review, it is that Vivian's story was actually well written, and I enjoyed it. Sonia and Vivian are connected, as Bert slaughters some and throws the rest of Vivian's tribe into s*avery. That's how she ends up in the coliseum in the first place.

Arietta: I don't know how the f*ck the author thought it was a good idea to include her in Van's harem. She is Van's master at the coliseum, the owner of the coliseum, and also the one who conducts experiments on him to make him a hero who will lead the Empire and take back the contaminated lands. She places brainwashing magic on him to ensure that after Van purifies the contaminated lands, he'll have enough prestige to put her into the position of Head of the Family (Arietta is not the head of the family), so then VAN can have the honor of marrying the head of one of the 3 prestigious noble families in the Empire. She basically wants a pet. She's a terrible person; she attempted to leverage Van's love for Vivian by trying to strike a deal to take her (Arietta) to the World Tree colony by using Vivian's diary, after he learns everything with the help of his friends. Before that, she was doing her best to ensure Van didn't learn why Vivian had to fight to the death against Van. And you know what's crazy, Van takes the book, but out of the goodness of his heart, still takes her to the World Tree colony and takes her as a concubine. Excuse me, WHAT?? That just doesn't make any f*cking sense. Her only redeeming quality is that she saves Vivian when Vivian originally tries to escape from the s*ave owners, but I won't even give it to her because she got jealous when Van and Vivian share a final kiss as Vivian bleeds out. F*ck her. If she didn't make her way back into the story and was wiped out like the rest of her family by Van, I would've praised the author for good writing since they truly got me to hate a character.

Lastly, Elle (or El by the MTL; her real name is Luminere but ain't nobody saying that) : she's just a bland character. She's the stereotypical, ultra-talented outcast at the academy, and since Van has to wear a gas mask, the two outcasts bond together at the academy. They help each other and hang out. Cool, totally valid method to build up to a relationship. But you'd think that after Van gets his trust broken twice, Van doesn't open his heart to anyone anymore. F*ck no, somehow just hanging out and training with Elle grows their chemistry so much that she becomes the first wife. It isn't really specified how long that was. Again, I wouldn't take issue with it if the way they built their bond together actually made sense in correlation to the plot. And then she just bends over backwards and accepts Sonia and Arietta as Van's concubines because Van still holds a tiny part of his heart for those two, which is honestly quite disappointing overall.

In my opinion, Elle shouldn't even have existed as a love interest; it really should've been Sonia helping Van the entire time at the academy without her (Sonia) knowing, since Van was wearing a mask.

You'd imagine a novel with the title, " I reunited with the lady who abandoned me" would result in a tragic love story between a noble lady and her servant, and while that does certainly happen, why the f*ck is there a harem? Why is Sonia not just the first wife? Why is there someone else who is the first wife? Why are there even other wives?

All of that compounds why I believe you should NOT read this novel. It is utter horseshit. I hope I get transmigrated into this story so I can f*cking fix it or some shit, jesus christ man. <<less
