I ride through the snowstorm, originally to return home.

Zhao Yun’s ideal person was a man of great appearance and reputation. Apart from not liking him, there was nothing bad about him.

Really what an enjoyable read, with a surprisingly captivating plot-line. The way that the main characters interacted with one another throughout the novel was so much fun, and while the substitute plot definitely stressed me out a lot while reading, I’m left very satisfied with how the author concluded everything. There is definitely a lot of smut in the novel, typical of haitang literature, but it really doesn’t get to an excessive level like I thought it would, and there’s definitely a lot of actual plot in this novel to... more>> drive the characterization and political world building.

While there are a few loose ends, and I think the novel probably could have been just a bit longer with allowing the two of them more time to be happy together after everything was revealed, it still was overall such a well written story, meticulous in the plot progression and really well planned in terms of character motivations and emotions. Every villain had a reason to behave as they did, and even characters that I didn’t necessarily empathize with I could still understand on a rational level. The politics was written in a way that actually had me invested in everything happening, and I ended up even taking notes on each of the characters to track all of their individual personalities and roles in the novel.

I especially loved the gong Zhao Yun in this novel, and he gets quite a lot of character development beyond just his relationship with Pei Changhuai. His personality is very bold and teasing, and he’s really so effortlessly charming (this could be my bias for him speaking though), from his roguish grin to his careless way of speaking. He’ll fake weakness when it’s not too serious, but then when he is actually genuinely injured, he’ll always play it off and pretend he’s fine, not wanting to worry anyone, especially not Pei Changhuai. He’s always the first to admit wrong and apologize, and he has basically no shame, easily calling himself the wife or even teasingly calling Pei Changhuai gege, despite being the older one himself.

I loved him from the very first introduction basically, so he really could do no wrong for me, which probably helped me enjoy this novel even more as there are a few places where he does coerce Pei Changhuai, and one where it’s basically noncon. Though most of the car scenes do lean towards dubious consent, the shou actually does enjoy himself every time, and even takes initiative in many instances before they both confirm their feelings for each other, so it wasn’t hard to read by any means. The dogblood really isn’t as bad as I was expecting, mostly helped by how intensely down bad Zhao Yun is the entire time for Pei Changhuai.

Spoiler

To add to the gong’s characterization, I really loved so much as well how Xie Congjun was shown at first as this almost perfect character, the older brother figure that could do no wrong, protective and gentle, but upon getting a deeper look into his character, he has a darker side, cold and calculating, able to hold grudges and wary of forming bonds.

He meets Pei Yu in a moment where he’s venting out his anger on innocent birds, and the way that Pei Yu approaches him with such gentleness and purity makes him pull back on his rage. I feel that this moment really shows the kind of dynamic that the two of them have, with Xie Congjun being quite angst ridden inside, later pining for what he can’t have and shown to be very possessive over Pei Yu (though not to the extent that the Shizi Xie Zhijun is), but still only showing his more gentle and kind side to Pei Yu.

His relationship with the Emperor was quite interesting as well, with a respect of the man’s leadership abilities but overall rejection of the other as a father. I feel like he got a really good level of development regarding the way that he learned to let go of his past issues with the other man and move on with his lover.

[collapse]

The shou at first seems to be quite easily led around by the Zhao Yun, succumbing easily to Zhao Yun’s advances as he chases the familiar glimpses of his first love in the other man. He has a very upright and proper demeanor, but also finds himself unable to resist Zhao Yun calling his name, as it reminds him too much of his now deceased friend. I really liked how his feelings for Zhao Yun slowly shifted over the course of the novel, and how he wrestled with his budding feelings for the man as he mourned the loss of his first love. His internal conflict was the source of most of the emotional drama in this novel, and the overall resolution was very satisfying to read.

I will say some of the logic in this novel is definitely there just to support the smut, but I also didn’t feel like the plot was sacrificed at all for smut, so it really was a perfect balance for me. This is definitely a story that I think while enjoyable the first time, is probably even more enjoyable upon rereads. I definitely will be listening to the audio drama to re-experience it, and probably buying the official english translation later on to read it once more. Very much recommended! <<less

Pei Changhuai x Zhao Yun - Better than a 4 but not sure if it is a 5 because I read it through MTL, which has its own set of challenges - sometimes the translation is fine and sometimes it isn't, though good enough to comprehend the story. This is an ancient palace intrigue that uses personal relationships to move the plot along. There are quite a few characters to keep track of. The author use of flashback and foreshadowing are well done and the flashbacks help fill in the... more>> missing pieces. There is violence, s*x, betrayal, tenderness, humor, ab*se, mystery, friendships, regrets, forgiveness. <<less
