I Truly Am Not a Wise King!

Qu Dubian, a former celebrity who rose to fame through calculated “green tea” acting and fan voting in his past life, transmigrates into the body of a young prince in the Great Zhou Dynasty whose mother died early.

Not only does he have just 3 days left to live, but he’s also bound to a [Disease Simulator] to extend his life.

There are three ways to increase lifespan:

1. Daily martial arts practice check-in, adding one day of life.

2. Experience diseases, write papers for the system, help the system archive and upgrade, adding three months of life.

3. Make friends, increase their favorability to 60, adding one year of life.

Qu Dubian understands one thing deeply: to gain favorability, helping in times of need is better than adding flowers to a brocade.

A small eunuch about to freeze to death? Save him!

The cheap emperor father, the neglected young master of the Minister’s family, the bored imperial concubines in the harem, the only son of a marquis family, hostages from enemy countries…

Qu Dubian transforms into a filial(?) son/best friend/chat companion/playmate/soulmate, and the slowly increasing lifespan value makes him incredibly gratified.

The [Disease Simulator] is also a divine tool for avoiding the terrifying waves of succession struggles!

To exit the imperial power struggle, Qu Dubian stages a battlefield “accident,” rescues his exiled elder sister (a royal princess) who was married, and fakes total disability—blindness and crippled martial prowess.

From now on, he can comfortably rest on these military achievements that can protect him for a lifetime, living peacefully.

This move is super profitable!

However—

The Eastern Depot’s Chief gives a sinister look: “This one’s life was saved by the young prince. Investigate for me, who exactly made a move on the battlefield!”

The newly crowned top scholar looks sickly: “I’ve schemed all my life, only for a wise ruler. If the wise ruler is in darkness, I’m unwilling to take office.”

The young marquis, now the Northern Garrison General: “Imperial power has crushed to this extent, why does Your Highness still harbor kind thoughts?”

The adoptive mother who never cared about worldly affairs: “My son has suffered such a calamity, if this palace still turns a blind eye, how can I be called a mother?!”

The imperial concubines gather in Cining Palace, their resentful red-rimmed eyes leaving the emperor speechless.

In an instant, the princes are all on edge, schemes are churning in the capital, and people’s hearts are in turmoil.

Qu Dubian, who only wants to live peacefully: “…”

Help, save me!!

#They all want me to ascend the throne, but I just want to live peacefully#

“Wild geese fly in cold beyond the pass, the winding melody crosses the border*.”

*pun for Qu Dubian (literal meaning

曲 (Qǔ) – Melody, tune

渡 (Dù) – To cross, to pass over

边 (Biān) – Border, edge)

One of the best that I had ever read. The plot, the characters, everything are told in many povs and make things easier to understand. I have reread a few times and can't deny I will read it again.

I think this is the second time this has happened. I've read a book where the plot is very similar. Very very similar and then I like the one that was written after. So I do think that the author probably saw this original book or something and was like I don't like the way it was written I'm going to write it better or something. And they did it. And it was better. In fact I like it a lot more. I think this book is so similar to... more>> "Forced to Ascend the Throne after Transmigrating" But the thing is I didn't finish that book because I didn't like it. Also because the description of that book is a total spoiler for the entire book.

Anyways this book is so much better and is so much more my taste because I prefer family love and I prefer when people strive for a happy ending that makes sense. Obviously there was a golden finger involved such as the system helping him but with just basically allowing him to survive and abilities to help the people around him be healthy. I don't really mind that as much because the characters were never out of character to me. Unlike that previous book that I mentioned that I think was the original novel. Because it was written earlier than this book. This book is way better written and is very character driven and none of the characters are written out of character. I think it's much harder to write a happy ending that makes sense and doesn't feel forced because everything was foreshadowed and everything was actually written and planned for.
Spoiler

I think the only thing that was a little weird and it felt like oh so the main character can finally find out who is behind it was like that secret paper writing thing. I think maybe I didn't quite understand that very well but I felt like that kind of came out of nowhere and why would that be there. But other than to hint and help the main character figure out who it was. But you know what I'll accept it cuz it's very minor and it doesn't mean anyone I know is out of character because obviously we didn't really know that person very well who did it. Because that person was written very vaguely.

[collapse]

I feel like all of the princes are so unique and they're story arcs are quite interesting because I have an opinion for each person. And I think that's good and it doesn't feel 2D. Even the emperor is complex but only because of the position the main character was in and also because of the dynamic of being an emperor and a father is quite toxic. So yeah. I don't really feel like anyone was terrible except for
Spoiler

well the mastermind and of course in my opinion the second Prince

[collapse]

I'm quite happy with how this book ended because I love a happy ending. And although I felt like maybe if the author was up to it we could have gotten shounen ai... lol Just because so many guys liked the main character probably just like as a straight guy kind of feeling but still it could have been something you know if it could have wanted to. LOL I'm not even sure if the main character is interested.. lol.

The main character: very solid person. Thoughtful. Green tea. Smart probably too smart considering like he was just an idol. But we don't know. He did work hard but he worked hard to survive. And he always made the right moral decision. He knew how to separate the person from the person who did it. And he always made sure to respect the people around him and was a feminist. Definitely the smartest because obviously the he knew that being in power was not a good position but he knew when he had to step up in order to protect people and what it meant.

First prince: dumb but simple and just very lucky that he married a good woman to be honest but he's so honest so he definitely deserved her in the way that he always stuck by.
Spoiler

I think it's interesting that the emperor felt betrayed by the first Prince when the first Prince was trying to save his wife's family. I think that is a perspective I didn't even think about until the emperor said it and I felt a little bit sad for him but at the same time I was also like.. You know something sketchy happened and you know that his wife's family didn't actually do all of those things other than obviously some neglection for the people underneath and so yes his father-in-law should be punished but not to the degree where her entire family should be punished. But the fact that you know his the emperor was trying to give a way out to his first son multiple times in order for him to keep his lineage and keeping running for the crown, yet was rejected every time, I was like that is kind of sad I guess. He did technically pick his wife over his father. But it wasn't like that. And I think everybody knows and emperor knew that He was just doing what he could to protect people he cared about whereas the emperor could also have like done more for his first son but obviously maybe they were both in positions where they couldn't do much without it seeming unequal or whatever. Regardless I thought that was an interesting perspective. I do think of course it was a bit like self-imposed by the emperor because he was just being too rigid with himself and what he thought he could do and what his ego would allow him to do. As an emperor. But you see that's like the level of complexity and emotional depth that was in this novel for every single character. Not just the main character.

[collapse]

Second Prince: he is definitely like the peacemaker.
Spoiler

To be honest he's definitely the scariest one in my opinion. I think yeah very scary. I know that's technically a mental disease or whatever but without the proper support... Or the proper psychological therapy or emotional understanding or whatever it would require... It was very hard to change such a sociopath or like psychopath into someone who could empathize And have emotions for people and be a good leader. He's definitely the scariest but he is very smart. And I think what he did at the end was really interesting carving and figuring out who the Mastermind was kind of vaguely because he's so sharp. And I always remember how the main character was like how the second Prince was the toughest and the sharpest of mind so he would have like probably figured it out at the end. To some degree that is.

[collapse]

Third prince: I think he was fairly like a typical character in the sense that this is the kind of person you would expect to want to fight for the throne. Kind of a green tea light. Lol.
Spoiler

I think there is really nothing wrong with this person to be honest. Other than the fact that he wanted to become king. Although the fact that he wanted to become king did help make him like a little bit nasty in a way. Viewing everyone as a way to get up and just the whole process of wanting to become king and being King is just such a nasty kind of like situation. Just the prospect of wanting power makes you disregard people who are important in your life. And I think that was the reminder with him. But I felt like considering how he didn't make the situation worse for his eldest brother, at the end there when that situation happened to him, I felt like he still was a decent person even though he did some like sketchy things I guess and was obviously not that nice to his wife

[collapse]

Fourth prince: he is so relatable just like bring a pillow everywhere Prince. Kind of cute honestly. I think he was the best choice if he wasn't so lazy LOL. Somehow he's lazier than the main character.
Spoiler

yeah it's kind of sad. He definitely was the one that could have been the answer for everybody even the main character to you know have everything they wanted. If only only that didn't happen you know. It's like he was the most innocent to be honest. He is the most innocent. Out of all the princes and he was like honestly really wise as a child to. But just lazy. I'm not saying that something bad happens to him but I'm just saying that I feel like considering everything, he was the one who did the least to everybody but he yeah it was unfortunately in the mix of everything just like everybody else was. He didn't do anything wrong and that's kind of sad. I mean this is a spoiler but yeah in the end I think he is fine and happy where he is

[collapse]

Fifth prince: such a quiet person. But you kind of expect like kind of his story arc.. his story Arc is probably the most predictable.
Spoiler

To be honest.. He has a right to feel rebellious and feel mad but I thought he was just s*upidest of all of them. He was like intelligent probably to the level of the second Prince and the third Prince which is quite intelligent but he was the s*upidest out of all of his brothers in my opinion. Because I know yes you should feel like you want to take revenge for someone who killed your family.. But when your family was just advocating you to work for the person who so obviously was willing to step on you and you were potentially going to die but only this time your family was the one who died instead.... Yet you wanted to go on a rage path well silently to get your revenge by becoming the pawns of everyone else as well as the pawn of revenge and never truly living for yourself until the end where you just got the ending that you deserved but also luckily because the main character is so forgiving and also understanding and that they never had beef that it ended up okay for you. I don't know he was just a pawn like he was just the entire time. He was a pawn to his emotions. Like he never thought about what would make me happy. Like truly what would make him happy. Like he never got that smart. He was the s*upidest straight up. Because he was taking revenge for his mom but his mom was willing to do everything in order for herself to move up including having her own son be stepped around and pushed around and ultimately probably killed. Like her's mom was really s*upid too. Like his mom could not see that was going to happen? If it could happen to any of the servants who get caught then it can happen to her own son who is a servant to the six Prince. And so he was taking revenge for his mom but his mom would have probably ended up getting him killed anyways. And then he was taking revenge for his father who was playing the political game but I don't know I didn't really feel that like yes it does show that you know the emperor is a very complex and gray character because of the situation of being an emperor but it's just like I don't know he's pitiful. But like in a s*upid way. He really never lived for himself. If you say revenge is living for yourself but the revenge is only for someone who is willing to step on you and I don't know. I mean I know it's more complex than that like emotions are but it's just like it's just kind of funny but predictable! I don't actually hate him. Because he never did anything nasty in my opinion other than try to get his revenge but it wasn't ever like crazy. But it's just like so sad because he could have he could have turned the other way with the right support and I understand the main character when he felt like sad that he couldn't do that for the 5th Prince because he didn't notice it in time. And the good thing about the main character is that the main character although he feels regret about certain things if it isn't like life-threatening, he won't do anything in the sense of like like he won't do anything overtly but like underneath it he will try his best to make sure that they survive or that they make the right decisions hopefully. So I like the main character for that

[collapse]

6th prince: This is also a very typical character as a prince and you can predict his character Arc pretty well but luckily I think he's a lot kinder than he could have been because of the main character's influence.
Spoiler

You can pretty much tell what's going to happen to him because it's pretty well foreshadowed from the start. So I won't say too much that's all I'm going to say LOL.

[collapse]

It's actually kind of a easy read. Kind of heartwarming in a weird way. But also complex. But also exciting. I think reading about him in the northern frontier was really fun. That was probably the most exciting part but I honestly liked every single bit of it. <<less

This story is indeed cute and wholesome. I started reading while keeping in mind that this would be a light and funny book. Oh, how wrong could I be? Of course, overall it does seem to have that comedic foundation, but after done reading, my heart feels somewhat fulfilled yet heavy at the same time. So wholsome yet painful. At least for me.

It started when the MC was 2 years old; it feels like I grew up with him; I guess that's what makes it so warm and makes me... more>> love the MC. I love how this book is short but still managed to make me feel so involved with the MC's lives. NGL, I spilled tears here and there, and my heart hurts a lot. But I think it's not a bad thing; it makes this story more real. I love how the flow of the story is kind of smooth, making me feel like what happened is what makes the MC who he is at the end of the story. It might not be some people's cup of tea, but it's definitely mine!

Warning though, this book is not funny from the start till the end. You will find yourself reminiscing at some point of the story.

Spoiler

Especially when someone died, I keep remembering the childhood moment of MC when everything was simple, when he would share false and embarrassing facts about the emperor with his sibling, when the emperor chased him around. I think this is what makes me so involved. All the small and seeming unimportant scenes just keep stabbing me in the heart at the end. I cried a lot when his first dog died. I can't believe the funny scene of him using a dog cart before can be such a sad thing. I cried especially a lot when the emperor died. All the childhood moments of him with his father just flashed back into my mind, and I can't hold the tears. Even though I understand the MC's dislike (?) if we can describe that as that, at the same time I also can understand the father who cannot be a father because of his position. The ending feels bittersweet for me.

One of the best novels I read till date.

I think one of the reviews already mentioned everything.

But I would like to emphasize one character that made me feel heartfelt emotions for

Spoiler

The Emperor:

He starts off as a grey character. But I genuinely enjoyed both MC and his relationship. Truly!!! I loved it so much. The emperor's undeniable pampering and the MC's playful mischievousness.

But as they grew up, I realized MC is lot more cold blooded and calmer than I expected. I don't blame him for that. Instead I admire him to not get lost in the favor of an emperor. He was extremely rational.

But as I read about the emperor in between the lines I realized he was such a lonely figure. He was a great emperor. But not a good father or husband. And the irony was that, it's because he wanted to be a dignified emperor that's why he never gave emotions to others.

But I realized that he loved MC extremely much. So so much.

It is indeed MC who started their dad son relationship, but it was the emperor who fell harder.

Some highlight moment was when

Emperor says to mc: I did not order them to give you poison. I never want to harm you.

The emperor spoke him so pleadingly

Another moment was when he said

You don't have to be constrained by the rules of palace. If you want to live freely, just live free

Him asking MC to one last time call him Dad? Will you call me dad one last time?

I know the MC's pov, as well as Emperor's pov. That's why I felt it was even more heartbreaking. My tears did not stop for a long time and his death took quite a toll on me.

Usually characters like Emperor in similar novels appear hypocritical to me. And I always comment on that. But the MC addressed that issue clearly in this novel. He said the false and true feelings towards emperor seem to come to an end with his death. I thought wow!! MC can really control himself even at this point of time. Did the fifteen years do nothing for him? Rationally I understand his pov, extremely so!! But I thought really?

Only for the author to describe that MCs felt wetness in his eyes.

I really love MC. His Thoughtfulness towards others and everyone. And how he actually had to put an effort to not fall for complete parental love for the emperor. To constantly remind himself that he is not just his dad but an emperor. One of the highlights even among his family was between him and emperor. I truly love both of them.

Again I am definitely not saying the emperor is right. He did many wrong things, but he was a good ruler at his time of service. He did try to keep the princes in check. But he always had a reason. He made difficult decisions even if he didn't want to. Again, we cannot judge others from 21st century pov. Compared to Nanning emperor or Nother Frontier empire. The zhou kingdom emperor was enviable.

I wished there was more interaction between emperor and MC. And as the emperor grew older, his loneliness really opened my eyes. And him caring so much for MC made me realize that, it's true MC fell first, but the emperor fell harder for MC. (Parental love)

I am still so heartbroken!!! I still feel like crying. Please help me author, you made me cut onions without paying me

This novel reminds me of 'Forced to Ascend the Throne after Transmigrating'. As per what my predecessor reviewers said it is cute, wholesome, funny and... Bittersweet? Or is it more appropriate to say heart wrenching on some parts? ... more>>
Spoiler

especially when you read about the puppy cart and feather duster at the later parts of the novel. And the extras and welfare extras of the novel... Idk, if the author just like twisting the knife for the extended pov of Dahei and the emperor or they meant it as relief like "hey look, in their last moments they are fine and still look after they beloved master/son"

[collapse]

It's a story following the journey of Qu Dubian's childhood to his retirement. The whole summary itself serves as a guideline for what you can expect from his story. He was well loved but of course since it is ancient china in the palace setting, it is embroiled with treachery, calculations and blood. And although, imo, the summary is a bit spoiler-ish, there's this one plot twist that was not written in the summary but in the back of my mind is kind of expected?
Spoiler

author never leave any of his brothers unscathed. (Are all the authors who wrote this kind of novel, never leave behind at least one good brother that fully support the protagonist without having tragic background or tragic ending?) Man, I can't move on from the fact that that brother will be like that at the end. I want him to attend their family gathering but alas, it is better for him to be in that state.

[collapse]
like how I saluted the slow witted eldest prince for repeatedly choosing his wife and their family rather than fighting for the throne.

Or how psycho the second prince but still asked his mom to be his mom if there is a next life.

Or the fact that despite how petty, narrow minded and greedy the third prince is, he didn't let his eldest brother got implicated when all the facts first pointed out that the eldest brother may be the one who orchestrated the accident just because the eldest brother saved him.

The fourth prince... Loves to sleep and slack of. He is the closest brother to Xiao Qi (little seven, what they called Qu Dubian cause he is the 7th prince) because they are sleeping partners inside the class. I really love how he said that if Xiao Qi wanted the throne he will support him and Xiao Qi replied something about having power and being alive, but both are not as valuable as freedom or something.

Then the fifth prince... ghad, this guy.... I want to give him a bear hug. I love this guy for wanting to protect Xiao Qi away from the possible pain of realizing that the emperor may turn away from them when pros and cons of the imperial power was put in the emperor's scale. Even though Xiao Qi knew it from the start

And the spoiled Sixth brother, bruh is another foolish guy. He is both arrogant and ignorant. The type that can be shape depending on who is guiding him. Thank heavens, Xiao Qi was there so he didn't turn in the dark side.

Of course there are also other characters and since the Simulator will point out who you will pay attention who Xiao Qi will beg for favorability to when you read so you will know them and not get confused.

The difference between this and the other novel I mentioned above is that this novel didn't give Qu Dubian a love life. And the simulator.
Spoiler

LMAO when he got blind and he agreed to the simulator's offer to help him see things. When he opened his eyes it is 2D version. 😂, it is really funny how he commented that maybe after xx month, he will stop watching cartoons. Cause it is literally like that. And from the perspective of the people around him he was depressed but switching to his perspective he was having fun looking at the mushroom that looks like pixilated snowman in his eyes so he thought it was cute and started building snowman next to it.

[collapse]

Xiao Qi pursues having freedom cause that is what his biological mom wanted for him, his name was something from a poem about bird flying freely and of course what he wanted. Unfortunately, those circumstances happened and he had no choice but to sit on the throne much like how it is with the other series I mentioned in the beginning.

Sorry, this is not a review but more of a semi-rant. But I promised it is a great novel to read. You will love the characters, the wholesome childhood, the teenage years when he got great friends, the thrill and anxiety during the war phase, the heart wrenching process of becoming the emperor, unifying the three states ghad, Yu Ruo why are you not from Dazhou?! and training a successor. Plus the extras and welfare extras! Must read! <<less

I'm lacking the extras, hold up.

Mentioned before, sweet, funny, bittersweet.

It's not about an OP protagonist, scheming politics, or brainless farts.

... more>> If anything, this is an emotional story, it delves more in what are relationships, desires, and consequences.

It has no CP, or romance, God bless. Instead it focuses on family, who are like-minded and the affection growing/dying inside the palace walls. IT'S REALLY GOOD. The MC isn't some god, even when in the battlefield he relied on the information he had and sought. When talking about politics, he stayed out of the fight for the throne, we get the happenings of other princes instead. It's not brainless flattery after the MC, he is well loved and for reasons we'll deserved, his relationships didn't warm up from on second to another, they had development and/or time to warm up.

It feels like experiencing his life's upside-downs, it's not some sort of Epic. His wish for freedom, love and the peaceful world he once lived in are down to earth. It is bittersweet, he gained and lost so much, he is not an absolute winner in the manner he hoped for, he suffered devastating losses, and yet he built a future for the better. <<less

It's cute, funny and very enjoyable to read.

One of my favorite scenes was when MC started farting inside the emperor's quilt which woke the emperor up because he felt the continues attack of hot air hitting him. And the time when the emperor started chasing and beating the MC with a feather duster because of his 'self sacrifice' which is offering himself as a test subject for making antidotes from an infectious disease that killed countless lives. The emperor even delivered the feather duster to MC's adopted mother because the... more>> MC run away from him.

The MC's uncle also delivered a cane to MC's grandma which he personally picked to hit MC. It's so funny how MC couldn't come down from the roof because his grandma is waiting for him at the bottom holding a cane. He even got the nerve to say that next time he will tell them in advance before doing it again.

It's a really wholesome story and I like how the people cares about his well being. <<less

you definitely need to read this! It's truly a 5 star novel. There are no two dimensional characters, everyone has things they live for and things they are willing to die for. None of the main characters were s*um without redemption. The relationship between the royal people who are related by blood but can't call each other family comfortably is really too heart wrenching, and I cried a thousand times reading this. The seven brothers, who used to casually go to school together and play games, slowly shifted into a... more>> place where they were willing to backstab each other for the sake of the goals they couldn't let go. The twists in this novel had me buying chapters one after the other, and by about chapter 100 I gave up and just bought the whole thing and read it all in one night. From the beginning to the end of the novel the author carefully planted flags, so that even heart warming moments could later turn into betrayals. Even the fighting scenes are top notch, the development of the MC becoming a military general is so natural that you nod along and accept it.

I really think there are zero things wrong with this novel. It is not overly long and the characters are utilised well. I originally thought that creating seven princes and a princess, as well as the various concubine mothers and even involving members of the previous harem was too ambitious and so I was prepared for shallow characters, but actually each one had an impact on my heart. Even characters from other kingdoms are fleshed out. The emperor especially, it was too much for me to not cry for him in the later chapters, even though I usually hate the 'neglectful father turned good' trope usually. At first you curse him for being s*um who abandoned a child and then dared to pick him back up again on whim, and then you laugh as Qu Dubian taunts him and the emperor scolds him without being able to punish him, and then you cry as they slowly grow apart as father and son and wish for them to come back together again. The emperor has to be impartial for the sake of his country and Xiaoqi and his father understand this and try to let go of their relationship, but in the end you can tell raising Qu Dubian had a real impact on him. Qu Dubian was the only child he allowed himself to get close to and he was unable to let him go fully.
Spoiler

there;s so many heartbreaking moments, like when he immediately told xiaoqi he did not poison him and was touched when xiaoqi said he never believed it anyway. or after xiaoqi comes back from war and has scars on his hands and the emperor recalls xiaoqi's unblemished little hands as a toddler. When he begged xiaoqi to call him dad one last time, and when xiaoqi cried after his father passed, and mourned that there would be nobody to punish him with a feather duster anymore...

[collapse]
I started crying again just now.

I also originally frustrated by the pacing of the first 50 or so chapters, where Qu Dubian remained around three years old and was just getting up to funny childish antics. But actually, I wonder if that wasn't the intention of the author. In the later chapters, I thought wistfully of those early years that seemed trivia, but as the children turned into adults, I cursed the fact that they had to grow up so quickly. If Qu Dubian could remain a pampered three year old forever, I would be grateful. This isn't a story about a meteoric rise, but about treasuring family the most. Xiaoqi (name for the 7th prince, mc) truly loves every member of his family, and his family all feel his love as well. Knowing that Xiaoqi
Spoiler

experienced the traumatic death of his parents

[collapse]
it completely makes sense that he is so protective of his adopted mother and his older sister, and why he would throw away his desire to be under the radar to keep them safe.

There's so much more I could say, but in short, if you dont read this, you're missing out! <<less
