100% sci fi fluff. Easy, light read. The mystery/problem with the mermaids'
Spoiler

memories, status, abilities; the black impurities; the star beasts; MC's status - it all gets happily resolved.

[collapse]
If you're looking for something deep, logical, challenging, dramatic, or meaningful, look elsewhere. This is good for light, fluffy, uncritical reading. (Although I do wish the author used "young man" instead of "teenager", since the MC is of mermaid adult age...)

It's a cute, simple, and straightforward story. Full of fluff, lack of common sense, lack of notable villains, everything is smooth sailed.

I dropped it because MC is just not the kind of MC I enjoy. He's too soft for someone who previously survived in a apocalypse world. Not ruthless enough, even when the author was showing us how "mature" and smart he is, it did nothing to me. It wasn't that exciting. I also don't like how ML always treated him as a child but still said MC is his... more>> mate... That's pretty weird...

Spoiler

I know it's the beauty filter... MC raised a good argument to ML, he's been lying to him and the cute mermaid personality he has shown was just an act and not the real him. And said the person that he liked was fake. That was a a very good point, but ML just... didn't think much about it and still thought he was like a teenager trying to be adult while MC is a wholeass 20 year old. I was actually really dissapointed. This could be an interesting plot for the change of their relationship but they just glossed over it. ML liked the cute appearance and if it wasn't for the MC's face he would probably think more about it.

[collapse]

The story is... fine, I knew this is a fluff story so I didn't expect anything serious even though the premise is MC being ML's pet... Isn't that lowkey s*avery? But at least the mermaids are actually treated well by the humans and protected by the laws even though they're pets. It could turn very dark real fast but author kept the story as lighthearted as possible. Just turn your brain off while reading. It has done a great job as a fluffy romantic story, it's just not my thing. <<less

I tried to get through this. I tried so hard because I wanted to know how they’d spin the whole “king of the mermaids” trope but I just— I can’t keep this up.

I dropped at chapter 50, just after the mermaid raid. I honestly don’t even understand why it was so sudden. The whole thing popped out of no where and then was resolved 2 chapters later.

i tried to hang on, even after the weirdness of the ML claiming to be in love with him but also being certain he... more>> had the mind of a young teenager/child. Like what? What do you mean you’re still in love with him? After that, I was just disgusted reading his reaction to the MC and everytime he looked at him and thought how cute he was I felt like it was condescending. Even if it was unintentional and not malicious, it was still the ML treating him as a child.

the whole thing gave me the ick and I was wishing the MC fell for a mermaid instead, but alas, we don’t get that.

I’m not averse to “pet becomes lover” if it’s done right. And I just feel like this wasn’t done right at all. This was more along the lines of “pet becomes child becomes lover” and that? Yeah not so much. Sucks caused I’d have like to see what happened with the mermaid planet and all that <<less

I'm dropping this novel,

I just don't kinda feel it, for some reason though.

First, are they entering holographic world or another world?

... more>> Will they get full by eating in HW? And also there's impurity in meat on HW? Like, WTH. It's not hw anymore, it's more like another world.

Well I get it it's interstellar novel, it was advance tech. I can still accept they can get full by eating at HW because they have this energy something. But having impurity on HW is a no go for me.

Well that's only my opinion, bye! <<less

I think this novel is meh. No character arcs, the world-building actually harms any chance of character or plot development and the plot is... pathetic at best. 1 star for the romance and 1 star because I think the ML is really interesting just poorly done.

So the characters... ... more>>
Spoiler

are talking monoliths, except the ML and MC. All mermaids are 3 y/o brats with the same whiney personality, with all the same view... just there is no difference between them or the humans for that matter.

[collapse]

Then we have MC and ML, they actually have an incredibly sweet romance at the beginning of the novel, which I truly liked and thought was absolutely amazing.... but then the fire nation attacked. Here is the thing I loved about the romance, they could not understand one another and it lead to these cute 'misunderstandings' of one another and it was super adorable to watch.
Spoiler

Then MC learned to talk and that ruined everything to the very core. This leads to what I thought could have been an amazing character arc for the ML. Since the MC was developing his own identity at this point he becomes super jealous and feels a need to control him, at least to a certain degree. I think this could have been an amazing arc since it would have shown something I am sure most people don't experience from the giver's side of being overprotected. Then we could have seen how he slowly comes to terms with reality and how this over-protectiveness is harming both himself and the MC and slowly learns to give him more freedom. But the author doesn't do this like at all.

[collapse]
. So yeah the romance was too good to be true, and we have an awkward dork who named his mecha Skywolf.

So the world-building could have been actually super amazing but it's just super poor. The technology is so advanced it actually makes everything convenient and pathetic.
Spoiler

This is how MC learns to talk and make money which again has no value to the character whatsoever.

[collapse]
Another thing to point out is how little the characters struggle against the world or how the characters explore this world and what it means to be human on this planet. It is a dreamlike word with literally zero problems. The only problem is that characters can die. What? No not like mutations or morphing into indescribable cosmic horrors or anything. They just die of old age. Like what ??? Also, the social hierarchy makes no sense but whatever, as if this flaw means anything.

The plot... I'm just... where to start. This was supposed to be a romance novel. 30ish chapter in and it's anything but a romance. Like what happened to the sweet romance??? What about the emotions that meant more than words could ever screech??? What else is there to say? When I pick up a history textbook I don't expect to read it about what are the expectations of technology for the next 100 years? As I pointed out this novel could have been a one-of-a-kind but it just fails at everything. This should have been a pure slice-of-life episodic novel. <<less

A sweet fluffy pet based interstellar slice of life romance.

Naive, sunshine should with healing abilities × mighty op yet gentle protective your majesty.

Because I guess I have similar interstellar mermaid bl I am not finding it that interesting.

And on top of that, is MC really from apocalypse world? No common sense, no vigilance, acting all familiar and kind with any passerby that a normal adult shouldn't have of his age, or least a person from such a dangerous and dark environment should have where humans have lost their moral footing... more>> and fighting against the undead.

It's more like he has childlike innocence and naivety. So that was a bit irritating how he was acting like a kid. And the way he learn the language? Hoe much he was able to comprehend varied from chapter to chapter, I was all confused at point he was able to understand complete sentences.

Spoiler

One thing that always pricks me in such novels that MC generally has inherent traits that become a revolutionary point in the progress of the world in which he has transmigrated. He is a unique existence and thud everyone become all curious and excited and start to surround him and becomes like a protected historical treasure.

Honestly, the first couple chapters are pretty dull. The MC is pretty timid for the survivor of a zombie apocalypse. Timid, quiet, and obedient. Not interesting at all. I would have liked it a bit more if he had had at least some backbone!

This work started rather strangely. And to be honest, I didn't want the characters to be lovers at all. It was very weird. In the end, the author turned things in a favourable direction, but still, the beginning made me don't want to give it a 5 out of 5. I would have given it a 4.5, but the site doesn't give that option.

Overall, the work is really cute, quite beautiful and descriptive. An Jin is a very sweet and gentle child who has a nice development. Norman was also... more>> revealing and softening.

Interesting setting, that are nicely developed, MC and ML have mutual respect, and MC behaviour is realistic and justified, other characters are pretty funny and good support for the plot, love the pair Little Silver and Mu Chen, my headcanon which is canon actually is that Little Silver is Gong and Mu Chen is power bottom/shou

The fact that MC didn't tell about his transmigration, well I think author didn't want to dwell with this theme and let us imagine ourselves or he told ML latter, because I am 100% sure he would tell his experience sooner or latter

A cute and fluffy interstellar slice-of-life novel, in which a water ability user from an apocalyptic world is reborn as a mermaid in a different planet.

One of the things I liked the most in this book was the relationship between An Jin (the main character) and Norman (the male lead). The way they respected and cared for each other was simply heartwarming, and I was so happy seeing them have so much consideration for one another. As the MC, An Jin was pretty realistic and smart, as he didn’t immediately... more>> show the extent of his intelligence and carefully weighted out his options, waiting to see if he could fully trust the ML before finally showing his capabilities. The side characters were all interesting as well, and I wasn’t expecting to get so invested in the side-couples’ relationships

— specially to what concerned Little Silver and Mu Chen, who had such a silly yet cute dynamic.

Although I’ve read my share of mermaid stories, and the plot wasn’t the most original one, it was nicely fleshed out and I was really curious to know what would happen next (even though I was able figure it out to some extent).

Now, on to the things that I think could’ve been better (kinda heavy spoilers ahead) :

Spoiler

1. Other reviewers mentioned the holographic world part was a bit confusing, but I think it was well explained throughout the story and I quite liked it. Nevertheless, I do agree that it needed further development as some details would’ve made it feel more real. It was also kinda forgotten at the latter stages of the story, so there’s that.

[collapse]

Spoiler

2. There was a part at the start of the novel, when Norman was starting to become more aware of An Jin’s intelligence, where he mentioned he had at some point harboured suspicious that An Jin was someone pretending to be a mermaid. He quickly discarded them and was glad he seemed to be a genuine mermaid and not someone looking for an opportunity to stab him in the back, but based on that thought he had I was looking forward to when An Jin would confess he had actually been reborn. When that didn’t happen, I really was disappointed, specially considering the fact that Norman opened up to him about his past and his family, which was obviously very difficult for him (although the author didn’t give it much attention).

[collapse]

Spoiler

3. The ending was unfortunately a bit rushed, and I wanted to see more of the main and side couples, as well as to know what would happen in the future regarding the cure for the blackening.

[collapse]

Despite this, it was a nice novel and it made me giggle a lot. If you’re looking for a fluffy, light-hearted and fast read with cute and strong characters, this is probably for you! <<less

Overall

Hmm, the beginning parts were very interesting. The MC has language issues, is a pet, his powers are relatively little and he can purify the impurities in the food and calm/increase the spiritual sea of people. So there were so many interesting things he was working hard to do and improve on like communicating with the ML, learning about the impurities in the world, making money etc. But then, he levelled up too fast for me. Already three times. And he can speak and turn into a human... more>> now, within 41 chapters. The curing of the ML’s spiritual rioting and the upgrading of his spiritual sea had also been completed by the MC already. And the ML has now gone completely gaga over the MC so all the things are handed to the MC. My level of interest and curiosity has gone down because what does the MC have to work hard for anymore? He's now working hard to be "independent" and is worried about being too special and wants to show he is an intelligent being that isn't experiment worthy. And so won't tell such things to the ML. But we know from the ML’s perspective that anything that happens will be easily fixed by him because he's the highest power now, so the MC is working hard, kinda uselessly. I wanted more of him finding ways to help the spiritual seas of all the citizens but the Mc’s goal in doing so is to earn money so he can live in case the ML loses interest in him. Which we know is unnecessary because the ML alrd connected his account to the MC and has fallen in love with him. All sources of conflict were quickly solved. I find all these goals too unnecessary. Also, I don't really notice the age difference until I stop to think about it. The MC is 20, but all the other characters believe he hasn't reached adulthood yet. The ML is 35 y'all. 15 years' difference. It's a little iffy to think the ML fell in love with 1) a pet and 2) someone he himself believes isn't an adult yet when he has like 15 years of experience as an adult over the MC. I don't get why the author made him so old.

The translation I read is from Exiled Rebels Scanlastions. The translation is normal for this group, above average but with some minor mistakes.

I tried. I really tried. But dropping it at chapter 60. I usually do my best to finish a novel once I've started it even if the TL is bad or something. (The TL in this one is okay, don't get me wrong)

But I guess it's just not for me. I was really interested in the beginning but it just kept adding in more and more things that it started becoming a drag to read (zombie, levelling up, interstellar, holographic world, beasts, mermaids, kinda like sentinel guide trope, etc).

It... more>> felt like I wasn't getting any plot at all and was only reading about how to make MC more OP and influential. It kinda made me tired for MC idk. Even the romance was a bit bland.

I tried... I really tried... but after tte MC went to virtual reality it was basically over for me. The author tried to put in everything in it and it worked at the beginning but then was just to much... which is really weird, cause while it was everything (transmigration, zombies, mermaids, gaming, interstellar world...)... it based also on stereotype characters and plot.

The synopsis is definitely correct in saying that it is a fairy tale like love. The sweetness is cavity inducing and it took all my effort to keep my teacher from realizing the smile on my face was actually not from her history lecture :) I do think that the politics/war do take up a bit more of the book than you would have thought from it not being mentioned at all in the synopsis, but it was written so well that I can't find it in me to complain.... more>> I really recommend this as a fast binge, I don't believe it is possible to read it over a period of days. Definitely recommend this when you’re in the mood for light reading - decent amount of fluff, some slice of life, fun side characters, a sweet romance, and a bit of danger.

This is a delightful and heartwarming story about the MC An Jin who transmigrates to a futuristic world and ends up as a pet mermaid. In this new world, both mermaids and humans are dependent upon each other but have no way to communicate with the other. It’s definitely a fantasy story where the MC’s human-like thinking coupled with the... more>> advantages of another non-human race create an OP character in this new world.

The romance in the story is very sweet and the couple is very cute. There is no angst, no drama, and no major misunderstandings between the MC and ML. ML is always respectful of the MC even though their initial relationship is that of owner and pet. It’s not all romance though! There’s also a decent storyline regarding race relations, star beasts, and improvements to society.

If you enjoyed Interstellar Rare Species (by the same author), you will definitely enjoy this novel! <<less

Well this has been an annoying a tiring read, at least for me. I felt like I was a fish being shaken while in a plastic bag (like that scene in Nemo; Darla shaking nemo). The plot devices are so random and not so cohesive. This feels like a half-baked Interstellar Rare Species (the authors other work I believe?) Which is a much much much more tolerable work compared to this. It has its cute moments, i get it, but it wasn't engaging enough I got bored and dropped... more>> this.

Spoiler

I finally understood why one commenter mentioned their disbelief on the sudden appearance of holographic whateverness, believe me I almost broke my neck from the whiplash. And then guess what, after it has served its purpose so it was reduced to half assed mentions. The transition to human speech could've been done in a different way. And why is the ML doing mercenary work in the holo world isn't he uhm sick? So why aggravate your wounds over holo things? Ah so he would look cool BOTH in real and holo world. And their dynamic, it was so unbalanced It felt weird they fell in love. The mermaid interactions are both annoying and interestingly cute. The author wanted it to be a lot and so much more but he execution was poor and all over the place. Don't get me started on the mutual love and baby arc. It got even weirder.

And I also want to emphasize the treatment of the world to the so-called emperor. He broke a fuxking mermans hand, i get it, but he was the one who attacked in the first place. Wouldn't they cater to the needs of the EMPEROR first? The person who is uhm DEFENDING THEIR ASSES? Unbelievable. It would've been believable if he was a general or whatever. It's weird that his status as an EMPEROR wasn't enough for him to do a lot of stuff. I guess kudos to the mermaid association for being so great and dedicated at their job. Whatever.

At first it was interesting now its just tiring. <<less

The MC is okay, but I think, the author deprived the real authority of an emperor. He protected their world, but the people don't want to protect him. He disparately needs a mermaid to soothe his energy/spiritual riot, but the science institute and auction house blacklisted him instead. Why? Because the mermaid attacked him and accidentally injured the mermaid? For god sake, he is the emperor and isn't it right for him to defend himself? After he was blacklisted by the scientific institute, he has no right to purchase a... more>> mermaid for 1 year. Were they waiting for him to die? He is the emperor but he has to disguised himself to be able to enter the auction house and join the bid. You could see how disparate he is.

He is the emperor but he has to fight, he is the emperor but he has to go to the frontline to fight against the star beast. That's because he has no choice. There's no person as powerful as him to defend their empire. He has to protect the world even if he's suffering from spiritual riot.

He is the emperor but what I saw, he is no different from the commoner. The author should change his character and make him a general instead. That make sense of his out of character.

Being an emperor is equivalent of owning the empire. He owns the world. The best mermaid that could possibly heal his spiritual riot should offer him as tribute. Protecting the emperor is equivalent of the protecting the world.

The people, the science institute, the nobles, the mermaids, they are not worth of the emperors protection. Too ungrateful. Too disgusting. They only think about the mermaids needs, mermaid is cute, mermaid should be protected above the emperor. Lol. Disgusting creature (except for the protagonist)

The emperor also has no power. He can't even control the interest of the riches and the nobles, how can he save the world? Can he save himself and his people? Tsk. This kind of emperor who lacks tyranny is bound to die. Thanks for the protagonist arrival. He is save. <<less
