(tentative) 4/5 but rated higher to boost the current low score.

while not a standout novel in this genre, it's (so far) been an enjoyable read! MC is pragmatic above all else which makes a fun contrast to the naive optimist of a system. There are a lot of nationalist propaganda type themes but that's mostly due to the time period in which this is set (i.e. For plot purposes primarily imo).

regarding the previous commenter's review about misandry: I definitely agree that this is a novel centered around the MC... more>> and women. Male characters seem to be mostly relegated to the background or as foils to their female counterparts. I personally don't find it to be to the point of discrimination though? Keeping in mind especially that this is a historical novel, the strong emphasis on raising the status of women (especially since MC is a modern woman in a revolutionary time) makes sense plot wise to me. I will say there are some interesting statements/beliefs thrown around by characters, but a) they come from and are also aimed towards both men and women and b) the translator does a good job addressing the most problematic of these in their notes.

translation is also easy to read and overall solid. Again, if you like this sort of slice of life, career progression set in the past type of novel, I think this is at least worth checking out! <<less

A typcal chinese berod novel, allways downgrade men! As long as family or someone, downgrade men and uphold women, then they'er/he's a good people/person to the extrem! This thing make me really really disgusting! A family or a person who downgrade men is no better than those who downgrade women by any means!

I really don't understand their mindes when they allways think those who want to be good, to be modern, have to downgrade and humlite men to be so, and if they are not then they are the bad... more>> ones, as no one good will not downgrade men!

Here at the female lead' family, the author kept emphasizes that her parents, espicially her mother, didn't discrean between their cheldren, and never favorate boys over girls, and always let them be eqall. But she seems to forget what "eqall" means, so she make it that they don't faver boys over girls, but favor girls over boys. And not just a little, but too much! There is a big gab between how they deal whith boys and girls. This gab is so big that it make me so uncomfortable, because such parents really doesn't deserve to be parents, just like those who misstreat girls dosen't deserve to be parents too.

......

The most good thing and enjoyable thing in this novel is the femal lead career story. It's really new and good to read, though she never ever faced with any difficulty and it's all smoth sailing which is not realastic, but good.

The thing that I didn't like the most is the romance! Really, it feels like it was just shoving there, it has no place but the author just want to put it, so she kept squiz it in the story, and I didn't like the way the male lead kept going after the femal lead. She already has refused him multi times, but he still going after her. This in my opinion is not love, is disrespect. If this was to happen with someone else, they won't feel that this man is enthusistic but a creeby man who won't leave the woman alone though she kept tilling him NO!

Though it become better later, but anyway I didn't the romance until the last part ot it maybe.

(Just talk about the dining table. Usually, a small square table cannot accommodate a whole family, especially when guests come, they have to stand up to eat.)

When I read this, I was like... (¬_¬) How s*upid and arroganat they are! You know, you could just sit at the ground and eat happily! Why raise your nose over the ground, why turture yourself and eat standing up, why put a very big table at a very small house just for this. It's too too too s*upid! And too arroganat!

Spoiler

(He finally understood that the women of the old Su family not didn't know how to love others, but they didn't love the men of the old Su family.)

It can summries the novel! Very uncomfortable!

......

All of all, this novel is worth reading for the sake of the female lead career. ☺️ <<less
