I woke up inside the novel [A Step Away from Hell] , a story I had read in my past life.

And not just anywhere—I found myself in a world destined to be destroyed by future disasters.

As if that wasn’t unfair enough, the place where I opened my eyes was none other than the s*ave shop where those very disasters were being raised.

Before I knew it, I had become a s*ave, forced to live in the same room as the young disasters who would one day bring about the end of the world…

“I told you, that’s Lizzie’s spot! Mary’s side has always been Lizzie’s spot…!”

“I sat here first. Why should it be yours? Explain it logically.”

“W-We should all s-sit fairly… t-together… I-I also… want to…”

“Friends shouldn’t fight…”

Yet, when I met them in person, they were nothing more than children—starved for affection.

These adorable kids… How could they possibly become the terrifying disasters that would one day destroy the world?

The answer was simple. The so-called ‘education’ of the nobles, carried out under the pretense of raising high-class s*aves.

“N-no, I d-don’t want to…! St-stay away! Don’t come near me!”

“Haah… Listen, brat. If you don’t want to get hurt, you’d better behave. Starting today, your ‘education’ begins.”

I had read the novel. I knew exactly who would take them and what horrors they would endure.

In other words, I knew how to handle the nobles.

If that’s the case…

“I’ll go instead.”

If I could take their misfortunes, couldn’t I also change the future that leads to destruction?

As the description says, the setting of this novel is a s*ave shop that specializes in raising children to be perfect high-quality s*aves for nobility. In the name of "education" the s*ave shop will basically rent out s*aves for a day to any noble who is willing to pay to be able to do whatever they want, whether it be human experimentation, taking out their anger, a weird fetish, whatever. We are told s*aves regularly die during this process.

You might think "Wow this sounds really dark. I bet this story... more>> has a heavy and somber ambiance, dealing with such serious topics like s*avery, child ab*se and death."

No, not really.

Previously I drafted a really long and rambling review talking about my feelings regarding how the author chooses to write about these issues, but I'll try to sum it up in a shorter way this time.

If you've ever read one of those fluffy shoujo webnovels where every character misunderstands that the main character is dying/terminally ill/suffering severely and as a result becomes obsessively protective of them even though the main character either isn't sick, isn't in any actual pain, or has plans to cure themselves, this has that type of vibe. Which is fine, but I think the author raises false expectations with the title and premise being so serious and tragic. While the main character *does* suffer, she gets a toned down suffering compared to other children in the shop (where other children are dying and getting beate to a pulp or locked in solitary confinement for weeks with no food, she is pricked by sewing needles, when she gets locked in solitary confinement she gets food and it isn't for very long, she gets slapped by a maid once, she regularly gets rewards in the form of medical equipment and snacks that she shares with the other children), and she's not really written to be severely affected by any of it because "she's an adult". I guess I just had an expectation that in "sacrificing herself" the author would make it *feel* like the main character is really truly sacrificing something so that any eventual happy ending will feel like it was earned through her blood sweat and tears, that she would be really struggling and fighting, crawling through the (figurative) mud to survive bleak circumstances and protect the innocent children around her. But there's just no grit to the story, no truly raw emotion. All the trauma and suffering is very PG-13, like the dark backstory you'd see in a Saturday morning cartoon.

That being said, it could be said that it's my fault for having these expectations of a story with a "slice of life" tag. I'm still not far into the story so if things become more serious or I feel that it gains more emotional depth later on I'll change my review. So far it's a decent slice-of-life childcare story that makes for a light read. The world building isn't especially detailed, there are a lot of aspects about the s*ave shop that don't really make sense even for evil s*ave traders. The protagonist is a nice sunny girl who is doing her best, even if I feel like she takes the traumas of the children somewhat lightly (she's surprised and confused when one of the newest children who has just been kidnapped, brutally beaten and sold into s*avery reacts violently to being approached and is distrustful of her. She gets over her surprise quickly, but like, what were you expecting?). The other children are cute, I'm looking forward to seeing more of how their powers manifest and how they'll (hopefully) take down the s*ave trade in the future. <<less

The review may contain spoilers depending on the point of view, but I've done my best to exclude specific plot points and only describe the genre to set realistic expectations. If you prefer to be surprised, don't read the rest of this review, but I don't think it's specific enough to warrant a spoiler tag.

Contrary to the expectations set by the title and synopsis, the sacrifice is actually relatively minor, and the genre is a comedy based on misunderstandings.

Now, I would have appreciated a dark fantasy story, but this has... more>> been quite entertaining in its own way so far.

Because of the trauma the other characters project onto her, minor injuries and inconveniences are perceived as torture and ab*se, which in turn leads them to hold her in high regard for taking on these burdens and enduring them in the place of others. And even when she honestly describes what happened, others think she's lying to hide her suffering from them.

There are some plot conveniences that are a bit of a stretch, but it's a light-hearted comedy, and best not taken too seriously.

I think the other review is mostly a disappointment in the genre of the novel, but in its actual genre I think it's written rather well. <<less
