TLDR: 2 STARS based on the horrible prose

Details: Confused is too gentle a word to describe this. It;s all passages similar to the following.

"Since the affinity needed when dealing with decrees was heavily influenced by heredity, power was a natural affinity.

... more>> There was a notion that the spirit was the prerogative of the aristocracy. An intermediate spirit replaced ten wizards, and the superior spirit was equivalent to the most elite knights of most noble families.

But very occasionally, a child with high affinity was born to parents with low affinity."

WTF If you can come up with a coherent picture of what's going on with the magic in this world my hats off to you. My guess is that the author tried to make their writing style entrancing and hypnotic, but only managed vague, addled and non communicative.

Maybe the novel will be saved by the plot, but there's not much to pin your hopes on. It lays out as a typical second chance novel. Commoner girl gets ticket to high society, gets used, gets betrayed, gets executed, gets sent back in time. <<less
