The Class A wanted criminal of the Kun Lun Sect, Su Ru Hui, died a painful death due to illness.

When he woke up, he realized that it was already five years later, and he had become the new husband of Sang Chi Yu, the top disciple of the Kun Lun Sect.

Sang Chi Yu, Su Ru Hui’s mortal enemy, was the most famous martial artist of the Kun Lun Sect and a former prodigy. However, he had his right leg disabled and was covered in scars, barely surviving.

Well, considering how pitiful he looks and how handsome he is, let bygones be bygones, Su Ru Hui thought. While treating his wounds, Su Ru Hui sighed. “The whip has injured you so badly. Who was so cruel to you? It’s inhumane.”

Sang Chi Yu quietly lifted his eyes and said, “You.”

Su Ru Hui: “……”

If he sees a snowstorm coming, that’s how he knows that his husband has arrived.

Hello, I'm the translator! Yang Su is one of my favorite authors, and I think one of the most underrated danmei authors out there. I'd like more people to read his/her work, so I decided to start translating his/her novels.

When I first read If You See Snow, I was surprised by how similar the premise and the main character were to MDZS. Both are shameless MCs who invented something that changed the world, then died. But that's where the similarities end.

Story

This world is not traditional xianxia or wuxia. It's pretty... more>> unusual, with steampunk elements mixed in - thanks to the MC, who invented puppets and guns that allow normal people to wield spiritual powers.

MC died and was reborn. He found himself married to his arch-nemesis from his past life, and someone's trying to kill him. There are multiple major factions vying for power in this world. MC and ML get entangled in conspiracies that go deeper than what's visible on the surface.

This author is really good at weaving a complex story which has comedic moments, and most importantly, heartfelt moments as well. All of the characters are fleshed out very well, even the side characters.

MC

Su Ru Hui has no spiritual power, from when he was still alive, and even after he was reborn. But he's a genius; his invention changed the world and put him in a position of power in one of the factions, but then he was captured by the enemy and died.

SRH is a smart, shameless, easy-going MC, but very caring at the same time. After being reborn, he just wants to leave his past behind and take good care of his disabled husband, but everyone seems to want something from him. He doesn't take things lying down. I'm always eager to find out what he will do next time to outsmart his enemies. He can't use brute force because he's up against spiritual power users whereas he himself is just a normal person.

ML

Sang Chi Yu was the head disciple of an upright, respected sect, whereas SRH was the leader of a gang of thugs, so they were always at each other's throat. After SRH died, a lot of things happened to him. He was expelled from his sect and was even tortured until he became disabled. Because of that, he was weak, and it almost seemed like he just wanted to give up on life at the beginning, but it doesn't stay thay way for long.

Spoiler

He realized SRH has been reborn pretty early on. He wants to protect him this time, which he failed to do in his past life, so he ingests something that instantly cures his disability and gives him his old powers back, although with some side effects. He has the power to "Devour" other people's special skills and make them his own. He tries to act cold and distant with SRH, but he just can't stay away. All SRH has to do is act helpless, and he'll come running lol

[collapse]

All in all, this is a fantastic read with excellent, novel-quality writing, a mystery that keeps me on the edge of my seat, and great characters, with a power couple who are married from the start and are totally devoted to each other. Please give it a try! <<less

It's premise reminds me of MDZS with all that flashback, death, resurrection and reunion, a lively and shameless MC and a silent ML, but that's all. The ML isn't self righteous, he is kind of indifferent, and confused with human interaction. This novel is easy to digest and have its own uniqueness.

MC got a system that gives out missions. There's mysteries he needs to uncover. They both have their story so it isn't boring. I like this because there's less drama.

["How will you save your disabled husband?" task is completed,... more>> the system privileges have been upgraded, the current openness is 55%, unlimited money is enabled, unlimited props are enabled, please go to the panel to obtain materials, spirit stones, coins and other props.]

But at the end, it kind of was too much. Sci-fi level, I'm not a fan of that. <<less

3.5/5 ⭐️ - I was genuinely really interested because the other reviewers compared some tropes to MDZS but it’s really not the same at all in terms of the plot.

Relationships:

  • I absolutely love the MC and ML’s interactions, especially when the MC is so loving towards the ML and thaws his ice.
  • The MC and ML’s relationship as children was touching... and I love how unique they both are.
  • MC and ML now are very interesting and you can compare the ML’s personalities in all three time frames (when they were children, when they were ‘enemies’, and in the present) and see his development.
Plot-wise:

  • If you like the Mandela Catalogue (The Mandela Catalogue follows the fictional Mandela County dealing with danger to humanity in the form of unstoppable beings known as Alternates, a form of demon which can shapeshift into different forms of humans in hope to take down humanity.) you would probably like this novel a lot. I don’t, which is why I dropped it.
  • Sci-fi, mechanical and steam-punk themed things are BIG in this novel (which I also don’t like, and I think all the reviews here did not emphasis on it enough). It’s the very foundation of this novel, honestly.
  • May be a translation thing, but the world-building is somewhat lacking... I genuinely do not know what these organizations, sects, and groups of people are. Where we are in the world is so confusing in this novel. There seems to be normal people, people with powers (manipulating water, medical powers, etc), and then there’s these organizations (Palace Pavilion, Black Market, Secret Sect) that don’t seem to have very vivid descriptions to them in the world besides a brief description (which sucks because these organizations seem to play a large role overall in the story).
My honest opinion:

Not a huge fan of sci-fi or the Mandela Catalogue/intruders infiltrating and pretending to be human, etc. It was interesting at first until the later 20s for me. The comedy from the MC’s shamelessness was the highlight for every chapter, and I love him dearly. However, the plot confuses me a bit especially with important figures (ML, ML’s master, the Jiang family) and genuinely creeps me out.

The timeline is also a bit confusing, and it’s a bit hard to piece together what’s going on or went on (though it may be a translation thing and not the actual story itself in the original, which I can’t read Chinese so bummer to me). I also understand that from where I’m at, it’s probably not yet revealed (in a plot-wise story) why the MC and ML became ‘enemies’ or ‘rivals’ clearly (except mentions), but I feel like that should add to the mystery but I’ve also lost motivation to keep reading because of too many factors relating to how the MC and ML feel about one another (they go a bit back and forth in flashbacks). <<less

Sigh. I dropped this at chapter 89. It was a fun read until ... more>>

the sci-fi matrix-esque arc.

[collapse]

I didn’t have the brain energy to piece the abstract info any longer. There are also incongruities in the story telling which I largely ignore. When this new arc at chapter 89 bombed the initial world setting, I gave up.

There should be a sci-fi tag added. If this book had a proper editor, it will be so much better.

I’d recommend this for the fast pace storyline (you know how Chinese novels can be so looong winded and super slow at revealing plot bits), romance and bits of silly humour. Maybe I’ll come back to this later. <<less
