At the age of twenty, because of a blood type mismatch, her parents discovered that she was not their biological child. Overnight, Xu Zhiyi’s world was turned upside down. After a paternity test, it was confirmed that she was the daughter of a wealthy tycoon.

As a result, she had more interactions with Jiang Sixun. He went from being her boss to becoming an older brother figure from a prestigious family. During a business trip, she learned that he had an engagement with someone else.

Seeing her lost in thought, Jiang Sixun asked, “What are you thinking about?”

Xu Zhiyi replied, “I’m thinking about what gift would be appropriate for your wedding.”

Jiang Sixun smiled and said that the engagement wasn’t real.

He was obviously a stern and domineering person, but he was remarkably patient and gentle with her.

One weekend, Xu Zhiyi invited Jiang Sixun to dinner to ask him for a favor. After spending several hours dressing up, she arrived at the meeting in her finest attire. When they met, Jiang Sixun asked, “What kind of favor requires us to meet in person?”

After a moment of internal struggle, Xu Zhiyi said, “I have my eye on a man. His family background is extraordinary, his abilities are impressive, he’s good-looking, and he has a high vision… He’s particularly hard to pursue. I’d like you to help me make an introduction.”

Jiang Sixun looked at her and asked, “Who are you interested in? I’ll bring him to you.”

Xu Zhiyi met his gaze and said, “There’s no need to bring him. He’s right in front of me.”

He was both her boss and the person she had liked for many years.

Jiang Sixun remained silent for a long time because his friend Qi Zhengchen also liked Xu Zhiyi, and Qi Zhengchen’s confession had been rejected by her. Since then, he had never had any feelings for Xu Zhiyi beyond those of a subordinate.

Jiang Sixun, the rebellious son of the Jiang family, was used to being single and free and was adamant about not getting married. One day, he suddenly announced in the family group chat that he was going to get a marriage certificate with Xu Zhiyi.

Mother: “Are you out of your mind? Qi Zhengchen likes Zhiyi, and you know it!”

Jiang Sixun: “I like her too. What should I do?

I love this story and so much of that comes from the incredible characters. They honestly feel so real and relatable. Family relations can be strained, people can make mistakes, they can be selfish, but the people involved aren't evil or wrong. This novel shows these kind of reationships perfectly.

One of my favourite things is that, all the supporting canon fodder you would expect to be horrible villains just... aren't like that. They're real people. Xu Ningwei, or later Shang Ningwei, the daughter who was swapped with the MC Xu... more>> Zhiyi, who struggles with the switch and returning to her original family, isn't a bad person. She's hurting and she makes realistic choices. She struggles and you really do feel for her. She has to build herself a whole new life, it's difficult, she f*cks up, she wavers, but she succeeds. Because both girls are in an impossible situation in the end, not just Zhiyi. And the Lu family, the ML's paternal family, is also really interesting. Yes, most of them are selfish and cruel. His father, Lu Jianbo, was not a good father to Jiang Sixun when he was young. But their relationship isn't beyond repair, even if it is strained and goes through ups and downs. And Lu Jianbo's relationship with his father is strained in such similar ways, you can really see the generational trauma there tbh.

I think the closest things this book has to your typical novel villains is, of course, the main villains, Shen Qingfeng, who is this softly manipulative psycho. The way she gets into people's heads is actually really interesting. Her husband, the ML's uncle Lu Jianling is also someone who is pretty horrible. And actually, I think that Xu Zhiyi's foster mother/Shang Ningwei's bio mother, Xie Meihua, is pretty close. Now, she's not evil, but she is really not a good mom. She basically emotionally abandoned Zhiyi from a young age, which has caused her a lot of trauma, and even with Ningwei she never manages to build a good relationship because she can't compromise (not that Shang Ningwei is good at that either but y'know) and will always favour her youngest daughter, Shang Canran. She has her moments of being good, but IMO she also says some genuinely unforgivable things to the MC.

Anyways, I could talk about the realism I feel in the characters for truly ages, so I'll stop here, but all this to say, this book genuinely touched my heart with the way it portrayed people's difficult relationships.

The romance, by the way, is pretty excellent, too. Xu Zhiyi and Jiang Sixun are great for each other. I do feel like them actually falling in love is maybe a bit quick, but given how long they have to wait for each other, it doesn't bother me too much in the end. Their struggles make their relationship stronger, their support for each other is unconditional, and they're very sweet.

All in all, I'd really recommend this novel to anyone who wants a break from the one-dimensional characters we see all the time, and they'll get an interesting story to boot. The translation is pretty good, there's a few errors from time to time, usually in the names, but it's not frequent enough to be really problematic. <<less
