Mishima Yomu has done it again.

First, he created a light isekai, and then he wrote a more mature version.

This isn't quite the same as "Otome...", but it's close enough.

... more>> The main difference is that we have a new protagonist who meets characters from the original, except for Liam, who appears in a few scenes as a powerful and mysterious figure.

Since the author is a decent writer, the novel is decently written. From my perspective, it's a good action story even as an independent piece.

The enjoyment of reading it is enhanced by the fact that it's a spin-off. I'm not a fan of spin-offs, but I would recommend this one to any fan of "I am the Evil Lord of the Intergalactic Empire".

It's a great pleasure to discover a new side of the characters from the main story, ones we hadn't known before.

What was missing in the original was a slightly broader view of the universe and events. Seeing things through Liam's eyes was interesting, but limiting. Finally, we get to understand how ordinary people saw the unfolding events without very onesided and simplified point of view of original novel. We also see that the Evil Lord's success was accompanied by many smaller events and dramas.

As for the protagonist Emma, she's both the same and different from Liam. The same, because both of them are naively good at heart. Just like Liam, she is forced to pick herself up after an initial fall and fight for her future. Different, because she wasn't shaped by traumatic events, and her soul is entirely innocent. Her naivety is more evident. Moreover, her actions are more natural without the knowledge from a previous life.

The story of the protagonist is more mature. We can follow her development and personality change. It's nice to watch Emma's transformation under the guidance of the mentors the author introduces. Over time, her physical strength, mental fortitude, and desire to become a real heroine without youthful fantasies grow.

Equally interesting is that Emma not only lifts herself from the fall, but also her companions, whose recovery is much harder. This is the best element of the story—the transformation of the characters.

Now, the flaws.

It's very irritating that many of Liam's subordinates refer to him as "he." Once or twice, it would have been mysterious, but it gets annoying and feels disrespectful when repeated.

What stands out the most is the main antagonist who plays a similar role to the Guide from the original. In the case of the guy in the hat, it's interesting and funny. However, the mercenary lady from "... Heroic knight..." soon becomes irritating and just boring.

And third. Mishima Yomu declared himself that he wanted to create light story as a change of peace and a method to rest but it apeares that he created it sloppily. Some plot holes are bit too evident.

Aaand last. There is too many positive and negative female characters.

It's hard to make a final judgment after four chapters, but for now, I can confidently and warmly recommend this novel. <<less
