“When I opened my eyes, I found myself as a character in a game. It was bewildering, but I thought it was worth a try. That was until I saw the skill given to me. It was [Opening Eyes], with no abilities whatsoever.”

The story starts with the MC playing a game that is “Very Difficult”, so difficult, in fact, that no one has ever managed to kill the last boss. After 18 years of playing and, having the best attempt be at 30% of the last boss’s HP, he decides to try out a character that he never used.

This character was the Slit-Eyed character. It had garbage stats and garbage traits. But, since the MC had ran out of options with every other character, he was trying to see if he could find any secrets with this new character. So he puts in his name ‘Zero’ and presses play… Only to find himself inside the game, as the Slit-Eyed character.

Unreliable narrator MC who insists that he's not a pe*verted masochistic mastermind who loves to charge headfirst into danger. He's a toned down 90s anime protagonist (think fanservice & slapstick) that becomes a self-sacrificing hero in the critical moments. So it's hard to hate him even though he gets on your nerves, especially with all those harem antics. I'm glad that the gimmick with his eyes opening isn't too over the top, & it's literally still just a bluff after a hundred chapters. He's not overpowered in a way that... more>> solves all his problems, and the story just needs less focus on collecting girls like pokemon. <<less

This novel is good and fun to read and the characters are all likable and you can't hate any of the characters also for a dead side character the story itself for it was amazing. Author has really put an effort in depth of characters which you can notice when every time they interact with MC.

I love this novel. It's like a breath of fresh air in the Academy genre, and you can totally feel the Anime vibes in it. The author's nailed it with a story that's not just another rehash – it's fresh, it's fun, and it keeps you guessing. I'm telling you, the comedy in this is top-notch, but it's not just laughs all the way. There are some serious moments that hit you right in the feels.

The characters are the real deal. They're not just cardboard cutouts; they've got depth, personality,... more>> and some of them are downright hilarious. And the main character? This guy's a trip. He's always up to something, keeping the story moving and keeping you on your toes. You never know what he's gonna pull next, which makes every page a blast.

Seriously, give this one a shot. It's well-written, the plot's engaging, and it strikes the perfect balance between comedy and drama. As an anime fan, I'm all in on this one. 100% recommended! <<less

The MC is not a mastermind like the title of the novel. Instead of being a mastermind, the MC is more of an informant who gives clues to the big shots to resolve the story's conflict. The MC's growth also seems very slow. Until chapter 324, the MC is only level 40, barely enough to fight the middle boss on his own. That's why most of the story's conflicts are resolved by the big shots, not the MC. For the MC's personality, like other slanted-eyed characters, he is cunning, flirtatious,... more>> and friendly.

For the heroine, well, there are at least 3 candidates so far. 1 main heroine and 2 sub heroines.

The main heroine is Luna.
Spoiler

Some readers hate Luna because of her annoying character and her overly dependent on the MC. Even though Luna has pink hair, Luna is not a burden. On the contrary, Luna is the most loyal character to the MC and is even willing to risk her life unconditionally for the MC. Luna also understands the MC's mindset very well, as if she can read the MC's will. Even though Luna may be annoying, it is understandable because the MC is Luna's first friend after years of being alone.

[collapse]

The other heroines are more like sub-heroines because they are the main characters of the game and the MC doesn't want to be tied to them because they are worried about ruining the storyline.

Redolin is a clumsy girl who dreams of becoming a knight.
Spoiler

Although Redolin looks straight, I don't think Redolin is an ideal heroine because Redolin prefers to use her values to judge someone before understanding their character and circumstances, especially the MC. I think Redolin is more annoying than Luna. Although Redolin has been saved by the MC many times, Redolin continues to give MC violation points even for trivial things like kicking a tr*sh can. This ultimately makes the MC's graduation rating drop. Unlike Luna who always trusts the MC unconditionally, Redolin often doubts the MC and is ready to kill the MC if the MC is considered a threat. Redolin has the potential to be a traitor heroine. Therefore, I don't like this character.

[collapse]

The other sub heroine is Redolin's older sister.
Spoiler

She is an imperal hero who has not married until the age of 35 who eventually becomes a teacher for the MC even though she is forced to. There is not much to tell other than her lazy character and she was forced to marry the MC by her exclusive maid.

This is an absolutely wonderful novel in terms of the setting and the backstory of the characters, but the flaw that makes me feel frustrated is Luna. She seems to be mentally unstable, constantly following, biting, and hitting the main character, and the worst part is that he almost loves her by chapter 283 and has no romance with other girls.

It's good, pretty good. Quality is consistent, some notes/flavors and themes are just done to death, but it's a generally enjoyable read.

I think our protag has the x machina style problem, he's not overpowered, but he's definitely gone beyond reasonable suspension of disbelief.

The troubles with it in my mind, is it feels like its 100% formula, and a math equation of a story. You go from x to y to z, and it feels routine. Emotional beats feel telegraphed and somewhat forced for what the story is.

Its a good read,... more>> a time burner, but not quality enough to feel like it's trying to rise above it, and do something special.

I don't find "misunderstood" as a genre trope to be a strong pull here. It feels like the curtain hiding the wizard of OZ... it gets in the way of knowing the characters. <<less

i am currently at chapter 96 during the time I write this.

i will write the pros first. The story is indeed well written. Its not that complex. Standard academy-game setting. Standar item system ect bla bla bla. But I enjoy it. Especially the MC. To be honest I only found out that MC is enjoyable but the other character? Its really brainstroke

the cons? Every other character, except for MC and some bigfish. I mean I got annoyed because author babysitting Luna too much. The MC take all her problem, nurture... more>> her, comffort her. But in return the MC only got violence from ever character. I mean, in novel alwas said about "unhealty" relationship, but the author itself must be refering to himself. Writing character that only recive without giving other (i mean Luna) is too annoying. She only gave MC a "small" thing but demands too much. At this point, I guess the author will kept babysitting her to the final chapter. I hate story about raising pet (wetever it baby dragon, cat-girl, or even human) <<less

I finally decided to sign up, and for a very bad reason, yes, that's what this review is about

I really had high hopes for this novel because of the Luterus arc, the author presented a neat story by involving the reader's emotions, but, really, the author ruined it with this character named Luna

how do I say it? The author really ruined this novel with just one character, I'm annoyed how MC's movements are so limited because of it, Luna girl this is why MC is getting weird looks, ughhh I... more>> want to write more because of how annoyed I am, but really, I can't think of anything besides swear words to describe how tr@sh Luna is <<less

Another novel with a MC that cant be himself because the "Game character" control all your emotions, etc, so at the end, is the MC doing it, or just the Game? I dont like when the autor restrics emotions to the MC with skills like "No fear" Etc, thats not the original MC, we are seeing just a character.

Promising so far, to early to tell how it will continue so leaving it at 4 star, might change this later though could forget.

It's good so far but not at the same tier as Reverend insanity only web novel I liked enough to consider 5 star, other 5 stars would be the Dresden novels, Malazan book of the fallen series, Eat man manga (Old, but I still really like it, just hit right for me)

As of now it's too early to tell how it will fair but currently would... more>> consider it around these:

Demonic emperor (slightly worse than RI but still really good, like 4, 5 star)

Renegade Immortal (slow, but I really liked it, 4-4, 5 star)

Hail the King early parts (MC got strong too quickly near the later parts, didn't really feel earned)

I became the tyrant of a defence game (same translator, Quite nice so far)

(I like sneaky characters as might be seen from the above examples so could be a bit biased...)

Could be great will have to see how it continues but it has potential at least.

No story spoilers below other than the premise.

Written as of chapter 20!

Main theme:

+Transported/reincarnated into a game (subset of isekai)

+Game system with skills and stats for powerups

+Hidden pieces/secrets tied to powerups gained from prior knowledge (MC played the game for years thus can be expected to know a lot of secrets so it's not unexpected)

Plot:

MC need to avoid too much interaction with the games maincast of characters to not weaken them to much nor disrupt the story's intended flow.

thus they are limited to the sideline npcs for recruiting allies though it already goes against this a bit, not to the point of full out taking main characters for his own team but interact more with them than the premise first suggested.

Instead of following the games intended story their goal is instead the hidden boss (maybe mastermind types of foe?, that planned everything while a figurehead takes the place publicly as the story bosses) while leaving the story boss to the maincast, at most giving hints but keeping some distance.

It avoids the common point that everyone loves the MC right from the start regardless of how well known they are that most stories seem to like instead the characters has traits that causes npcs to avoid them: offputting aura, slit eyes (think gin from Bleach), menacing/rude speak pattern.

So far it has avoided the trope of everyone singing their praises but for how long this keeps up will be interesting to see or if they fall into the usual route of people liking them from their deeds (Helping people, rumors spreads of them defeating bad guys etc) thus ignoring the initial premise of a disliked character due to traits -> Discrimination, personally would like to see them stay as a background character rather than be loved by all in the end, would be refreshing for it to not follow the norm.

Starting point leaves them quite weak with low stats and no op skills, powerups are mainly from hidden pieces rather than numerical stats and gambling for skills with stat points, This system could be ab*sed by author to just give powers whenever without proper buildup but so far hasn't, only time will tell if they can keep it this way, (to me it's more fun if things are at least foreshadowed, giving uses to something that seemed of no value rather than just "here have the exact solution to your problems out of nowhere")

Only 20 chapter are available as of this review so can't say much more to quality, it's fun so far just hope it keeps the quality going forward. <<less

Really well translated, plus an actually enjoyable concept. I'm always a fan of skills that force you to talk a certain way, and I think it's cool. Way too baked to write a review rn

Its written amazingly. It has a very interesting story/plot together with a well executed comedic undertone. 100% recommended the characters are well flayed out and described and they have their own unique personalities instead of simply being embodiments of concepts. The MC is also incredible as he is always active and thus being the one that moves the story forward, his personality is also one that makes it hard for you to guess what he is gonna do next which makes him very enjoyable to read. Give it a try!
