The Third Psychiatric Hospital in Lin Yuan City has “Three Don’ts”:

First, after midnight, do not wander the hallway on the fourth floor of the ward;

Second, do not recall any strange tales about the hospital at night;

Third, no matter how dangerous the situation, do not trust any patient.

Violation of any of the above three points will lead you to the abyss.

One late night, Shi Changfeng broke all three “don’ts.”

He stood alone in the empty hallway, wearing a doctor’s white coat, ready to hunt the abyss.

From the shadows at the end of the hallway, a “tap, tap, tap” sound echoed. Shi Changfeng stepped into the darkness and saw Jian Huai, his hands in his pockets, tapping his toes lightly on the ground, the sound of his shoes hitting the tiles creating a “tap, tap.”

Every night, Jian Huai would play a game of “three don’ts.” He enjoyed the feeling of being alone in the darkness, it was his playground. Until this night, he met Shi Changfeng.

Jian Huai slammed the monster’s severed limb at Shi Changfeng’s feet, a crazed smile twisting his blood-stained face: “Doctor Shi, are you on night shift tonight?”

Shi Changfeng, looking past the monster in the darkness at his feet, calmly stared at Jian Huai: “No, I’m here for you.”

If you are the abyss, then I will wait for you in the abyss

I went in knowing this was going to be relatively short, but I feel like it definitely didn't feel like a short novel. There's very rich character and philosophical development. The world collision is very interesting, and I like the closure the MC gets.

I feel like the story could have used a couple more world collisions, but I could tell the author was running out of inspiration in the return to ML world, so it was probably the right move to stop where she did.

Overall, it's a very interesting concept.... more>> I think the idea of the marketplace world is very interesting, and I loved the bittersweet twist in the first world.

The marketplace world helps emphasize how it's not bad thoughts that we need to guard against, it's bad thoughts in a system that lets you act on them with no need or time to consider the impact. It also shows how some people can be pitiful and a product of unfair circumstances, but that doesn't mean they're automatically good people or people worth sympathy.

The first world reminded me of the short story in the joy luck club where one of the daughters realizes that her mother really loved her and all the offensive things she said was her way of trying to say "I love you" across a cultural barrier that prevented them from being able to fully communicate. <<less

Hmm, what to say. This novel feels very different from the others that I’ve read by the same author. Cyan Wings is very good with humor. There really isn’t anything funny about this book. It is quite serious.

Treat it like an allegory about mental illnesses and it might make more sense. Very thought provoking.

/! Giving a little boost to this novel

First of all, keep in mind that it's the first finished novel of this author so of course it's not perfect.

I think it's an interesting novel because of the concept. Indeed, as said in another review, the main cast have to travel between the 'real world' and others words which are impacting the real one. Each of these worlds have their own set of rules and it's interesting to discover them and the mentality (often very disturbed obviously) of those living in them.

But... more>> I also liked to follow the growth of the MC, how he slowly learnt what love is and chose to help people rather than just feeling indifferent about it because of all the pain and suffering he endured ever since he was born (which could have made him just cold and apathetic).

Since the summary is very misleading, I'm gonna try to explain the first arc quickly.

Spoiler

In the first 'arc' we discover Jin Huan as a schizophrenic patient who doesn't whether he's crazy or the world is crazy. But the doctor (ML) explains to him that he isn't crazy and we slowly learn that the world in which JH lives isn't the 'real world' but a crumbling one who is slowly fusing with reality and they have to find the one who is provoking this fusion to break it (he's the core of this world) and then taking him back to the 'real world' (they're all from the real world at first but because they showed an intense desire to die, they somehow created this other world).

I didn't particularly liked this novel because of how rushed it feels with some parts that were left kinda unanswered but I still think it's worth giving it a chance because some elements are very well put together. <<less

The synopsis is mostly untrustworthy.

I'm not sure how to feel about this book. It was good, don't get me wrong. It had a beginning, middle and end. The world building was amazingly well done. But after the beginning and a brief moment to explain more, it rushed to the end. The story was just giving you enough to make you feel emotional upheavals and understand everything before the literal world ending cataclysm was resolved in a few chapters.

Also, its more Shonen ai than yaoi, if you can even call it... more>> that. There is no romance whatsoever except something that happened at the last moment in the last chapter. I suppose it was enough to make it not a pure bromance? But I've seen more than this in stories that weren't supposed to be BLs...

Spoiler

It was a forehead kiss. That's it. The rest was all too ambiguous and rather platonic. You could literally be boil it down to 'power of friendship/comradery' or 'I want to just take care of you kid' or 'I don't want to be alone in this world and you're more like me than anyone else.'
