I am home alone, planning my escape.

My new husband has gone to work.

But I know he actually hasn’t.

He is outside the door, looking through the peephole at me. He’s been standing there all day long.

At 5:25 in the afternoon, he will open the door and pretend to have just gotten off a long day at work, saying: “A-Zhen, I worked very hard today. I missed you so much.”

I have to run away, because not only is “he” pretending to be my husband, but “he”…..isn’t a human being!

Now, I have three plans…..

This story really freaking tortured me to death. It was so sad I ended up crying multiple times.

Yes, It's happy ending, and pretty expected imo, but the way it reaches that point is just so painful (in a good way)

I just love the MC. The more you read the story, the more you realise how strong he is as a person. The translator, Neon Dragonfly, is doing a great job so far. The author's writing style is also very fitting for this genre. I love how the fear is almost contagious. I started the story thinking it was completely translated (and it wasn't) so I had to MTL halfway through. It's pretty readable, but I'd suggest reading from neon's translations because they are high quality and worth the wait.

I absolutely love when there's psychological horror in a story. It's much more horrific than blood or gore or body horror. Ofc, there's some blood and gore in this story, but what shines is the psychological horror. Half the story, we (and the MC) keep on questioning whether whatever's happening is in our minds or it's actually that terrible. The scary details are visible slowly, and that makes it so much more frightening. It's like when you're in your bedroom at night, it's completely dark, you see a face similar to your own on the mirror. You get shocked, turn away and take a deep breath, and question yourself, "am I sitting close enough to the mirror to be reflected in it like that?" Then you realise, the room is dark, and also that the face might be similar to your own, but it's not your own face. You turn your head back and see the mirror is empty. You wonder if it was just your nerves.

Ahem, anyway, don't read this at night. The scariest ghost story is one that makes you question yourself. Props to the MC who survived through all this and fought for his happy ending without giving up.

This is the last spoiler and the biggest one for this story
Spoiler

It had always been the ML from the beginning to the end. MC had pancreatic cancer. ML tried to save him and prayed to an evil god, asking them for MC to live a healthy and happy life and for ML to always be with the MC, even after death. Evil god, being evil, reads it as "let me be with MC after death". ML dies in an accident shortly after. MC goes crazy after his death. ML returns to MC as a ghost but he's forgotten who he used to be, he just remembers he is tied to the MC and seems to love him.

ML had antisocial personality but he got better as he grew up. MC is what made him human. The way they love each other is both painful and liberating.

Ah I was nervous at the beginning of the story. I cried in the middle and smiled at the end of the story!

Author-nim! Why? Oh why! Thank you so much for a good story.

MC and ML are so inlove with each other.

ML is I think apathetic that others think he's monster until one caught his interest and that is the MC. They experience a lot together. It was so heart breaking in the middle of the story. It's good and heart breaking at the same time.

Might be the best horror danmei novel I've read so far. Definitely an underrated one.

The greatest strength of the story is that it really keeps you on edge throughout most of the novel. Especially in the first half, it's hard not to get goosebumps every chapter.

I will say that the premise of "loved one gets replaced by an entity" is increasing in stories, but I think the author really nailed down the psychological horror aspect when writing out this premise.

The author should be praised because not a lot of horror... more>> novels are capable of tapping into that innate irrational fear that us as humans have, and as the reader we can really empathise with the feelings of the MC. The MC flickers greatly between rational thought and emotional/intuitive thinking, and that really encapsulates the self-doubt, dread and craziness of his situation. And we as the reader end up wanting to believe what the MC is experiencing is real, but are also kept on the edge of doubt because of his declining mental health. You really want to hope for his sake that it's all in his head, but the little pieces of evidence that pile up keeps you in a state of paranoia and suspense.

The only thing I didn't like that much but am still okay with, is the ending. It's just a personal preference however, not that the writing had become unsatisfying or degraded.

Spoiler

Me personally, I would've preferred if the "ghost" ML had died for good. It would've left the story more well-rounded as he'd have to leave the MC knowing that he hurt the MC so much throughout his life.

This would've made for a better tragic ending instead of somewhat giving the ML what he wanted - which was to heal the MC fully but still be by his side. I feel like it was a bit too smooth and unbalanced that he ended up getting both things fulfilled.

I would've also preferred to see the MC alone grow from the revelations of his relationship with the ML and become a more mature person from the experience, instead of always believing the ML had his best interests at heart. (While the ML did at the end of his life, in the early stages of their relationship, he still did the MC really wrong.)

This is so much more than a horror story! The plot is deeply entrenched in the shrouded history of the two leads and their secrets and struggles over the years. Is the horror psychological? Supernatural? It will keep you guessing and then second-guessing yourself. This story made me FEEL THINGS, which is difficult to do. I probably had over a dozen theories before I figured out what was really happening.

(a huge thank you to the translator for doing an excellent job with this one!)

a paranormal bl is one of the best combination that can exist, and this novel proves the very same.

initially I had some doubts about the way the novel is written in the 'first-person format' due to my pre-existing notions of these being the very un-readable and un-enjoyable, but its only when you venture into the depths of the novel that you feel the novel is actually written in the most perfect format, providing a... more>> very immersive read so much so that I could literally feel myself in the shoes of the MC.

the thrill of the plot is very well delivered, and the whole trope of 'something taking the place of a loved one' is inherently so bizarre and riveting and this novel delivers all the right feels at the right times.

there is another aspect of this novel that hits one right in the heart, that if you love somebody deeply, you will go all the miles to ensure that they are cared for, something that both the MC and ML prove.

if you love a good dose of love in a horror setting then this is a perfect read, even if the genre is not something you like, please do consider giving it a read, it will not disappoint you. <<less

This is one of the best horror danmei, I ever read, truly a gem.

Not only it gave suspense but tragedy as well. The first half shown clues to the horror of the situation but soon like putting pieces of a puzzle, everything were now in place and grief of their situation. Cried of the ML's situation but ever actions has consequence and he did too much to both MC and the family, have mixed feelings for MC ignorance but who could blame him when everyone lies to hide the truth... more>> and mental health. The unreliable narrator genre really puts the suspense in action and keep you hooked till the end. <<less

Such a good read and a short one at that : (this is my very first horror danmei and I enjoyed every bit of it and obviously wouldn't have without a good translator (thank you translator-nim!!!)

My only complaint is that needed to have 100 more chapters lol

I read a review saying that said ML should have died for good and I completely agree. I definitely expected it even until I saw the author say it was a happy ending so no demon husband ending (sob) this was short and ending was definitely that the author didn't dare for a tragic ending. I was okay with the tragic ending actually, even though I'm a hea lover at my core but reading this I knew MC just needed to heal. From his husband from the trauma of his death from the fear of having a "person" impersone someone you love and know! It seemed like the core of his misery was his husband no matter what he did! But you have to admit their love was beautiful and very well written thank you author-nim!

This was amazing. I loved it. I never or barely ever feel fear when reading horror. This once I got so scared sh*tless I had to rush from the computer to my bed to read in my phone.

I couldn't turn my back to the door.

The writer did it so well, I was so scared at the beginning, later it became tamer. It's a very beautiful story, highly recommending! About plot twists, I didn't expect them at all!

I've had this on hold for too long... I really had to push myself to get through it. It was just okay, nothing special or memorable.

You can tell the author was trying something different, but it reads more like a rough draft. I enjoyed the suspenseful, horror-like moments and wished there were more of them.

The story fell apart for me when they handled the "demon" character the way they did.

[collapse]

They could have done so much more with this setting. Quite disappointing.

I actually didn't mind the first-person POV, but others might. Try and see!

In the end, while there was potential, the execution fell short. It doesn't deserve all the acclaim it has received, but I understand why some feel differently.

(edit) Thanks for the TL! It was pretty good in terms of translation + flow IMO. Keep it up! <<less
