As a despised assault-type guide, Lin Yuan has a fiancé matched to her by the state. Her fiancé is from a prestigious family, handsome, wealthy, and impeccably mannered, making her the envy of many.

Why would such an excellent partner be assigned to her? She doesn’t even meet the standards for tea ceremony, and her cooking skills only earned a “B” grade.

“He’ll get tired of her eventually.”

“That’s right, they’re doomed to fail.”

After hearing these kinds of remarks so often, Lin Yuan also came to believe that she and Jiang Yangshuo were destined to break up. So, when her fiancé appeared before her with a gentle and lovely young woman, she didn’t hesitate to take off her engagement ring and toss it down the drain in front of them both.

From then on, Lin Yuan enjoyed a life of freedom, where the sky was the limit, and the sea was vast enough for her to roam as she pleased.

Who knew that after a few years of living unrestrained, her ex-fiancé would corner her at a royal banquet, his eyes red-rimmed, and declare that he had been regretting his decision all these years, that he was consumed with longing for her.

No, no, no, thank you, please don’t. Lin Yuan, who had become accustomed to her wild ways, had not a single desire to return to her previous life.

Her ex-fiancé’s face turned livid as he gritted his teeth, “I don’t mind your type, and I can try my best to tolerate your shortcomings. You won’t find a sentinel who indulges you more than I do.”

“Well, you see, I already have a new sentinel.” To completely shake off his entanglement, Lin Yuan casually threw out a name as a shield. She quickly reviewed the images of the sentinels she had met on the battlefield, choosing the name of a brother with whom she had shared life-and-death experiences. She figured the man wouldn’t mind.

“He just happens to be a receptive type, a perfect match for me, and he likes me a lot. He doesn’t care about any of my flaws.”

Just after sending off her devastated ex-fiancé, Lin Yuan turned around and bumped into the very man she had just name-dropped.

That man, who had killed countless enemies on the battlefield and had achieved remarkable merit, had a slightly flushed, handsome face. He turned his head and said softly, “You…when did you know I liked you?”

Lin Yuan: “…”

This novel was phenomenal. The intricate plot and world building was enjoyable to read and created tension for readers and stimulated my mind. The romantic subplot was also fantastic due to the journey our male and female main characters took which strengthened their bond. Furthermore, I absolutely love the hero's journey in literature so reading about the different contaminated zones they explored and thenew individuals they met along the way was satisfying. The setting was profound and clearly thought out and I loved our strong yet vulnerable male lead and... more>> our abstinent yet warm female lead. The apocalyptic setting is reminiscent of Mist, Little Mushroom and the ending slightly reminded me of AOT. Superb read, I have no complaints !!! <<less

There is no timeline in this novel, we just know we are in a apocalyptic world. Even at the end, we vaguely know some shift happened some 400 hundred years ago that backfired on humanity.

I still don't know exactly what's guide, what's a sentinel, the percentage in the population who has these powers, how do guides form the pillar of contaminated zones? What's the "first cataclysm? No clue. I

f the focus was the romance then at least give us more....

This novel had the best dominant FL/shy ML dynamic. Literally the best and she's a properly dominant FL, esp in bed. I haven't seen such a dynamic in my 7 years of reading webnovels. They are evenly matched at that. I'm still giddy.

It's practically a miracle that I get interested in the plot of a romance novel, and this one had a good plot, albeit full of holes.

Honestly this deserves a season 2. I think the world building would be more polished if the adventures continued.

Hello, this is the current translator for this novel, Kumiko Cloud!

I rate it 4 because sometimes I wanted to pull my hair out. ML and MC are both the cold and quiet type. MC is really calm and quiet, while ML is fighting demons inside his heart and can't say anything at all! Cold+cold, I don't know how anything gets communicated.

The convos sometimes are like:

... more>> MC: Be careful.

ML: *internally being a poet about MC's coolness and prettiness

ML: Yes, you too.

And then they never speak again for two whole months.

The novel really said slow burn and honestly atp I was expecting one (1) kiss scene at the last page, but author came through with surprising boatloads of implied spiciness.

Honestly I came to translate this because the world-building is so unique and the phrases that author uses are so vivid. It's been a challenge to translate, and it flips from colloquial to poetic to abstract to horrific.

It's feminist, and I'm a sucker for that, especially in a C-novel (!!!) <<less

I absolutely loved the story. It is truly unique compared to other sentinel & guide stories. The MC is a guide and she dominates the ml, which is unprecedented. The ML is tough outside, but a softie inside. They fit very well. ❤️ I think the story was set in a post-apocalyptic era and people struggle to survive.

I would like to read more and I hope there's a few extras. I want to know what will happen next. 😉

This is a GEM of an apocalypse novel. So so good. The characters are well thought out and the plot leads you wanting for more. Most of the characters have very tragic and well-written backstories, which makes sense, since the world in "Invasion" is a very deadly place to live. I like how the mystery behind the contamination zones is woven into the plot like an onion, you have to peel back each layer to get a glimpse into what is really going on behind the scenes. I love the... more>> idea of a "mindscape" and I think it is a perfect device to have in a novel, as reading is a very imaginative activity. It is very easy to visualize the emotions of the characters with the usage of the "mindscapes" and the colorful writing. Honestly, I wish I could read chinese because usually it is difficult for the original literary beauty to come out with translations, and this translator already does a fantastic job. <<less

The synopsis doesn't do the novel justice. This is not your average sweet shoujo novel. I would classify it as more of action, sci-fi, dystopian, josei, with a hint of romance. It's perfect for anyone looking to get into sci-fi/fantasy without wanting to sit through chapters of worldbuilding. The world building happens as the story progresses and doesn't have confusing terms/new concepts. While it did seem that the ending was a little rushed for reasons unknown, it was wrapped up wonderfully. Would highly recommend.

wow WoW! I enjoyed reading this novel. The protagonist is dope. I loved her. She's cool. Her character growth is awesome.
Spoiler

At the beginning when she is emotionless to understanding each emotion one by one, making friends, loving, and empathizing with other's pain and joy. Her journey is depicted flawlessly to the end.

The ML is a rare kind. He's gentle and strong. Their relationship dynamic is interesting. Unlike other stories, the FL is the blockhead and dominating one whereas the ML is the shy and enduring one. They trust each other, fight together, have each other's backs. They care and worry for each other but don't hold back each other. They understand their responsibility.
Spoiler

As the story moves forward and the plots execute, you encounter many characters with heart wrenching and bloodcurdling stories. You feel extreme anger, sadness and relief. The quest for the truth is compelling. So many lives are sacrificed. But here is hope and light at the end.

This is one of the best apocalyptic stories that I have read recently.

4.5 but rounded down.

This is a rather interesting take on some very standard (and cliché) themes. There is also a slight role reversal with the MC being the more aggressive in the relationship, while the ML is the docile, shy one.

World-building is pretty decent in this but some of the explanations are lacking. We're introduced to the concepts of "Guides" and "Sentinels" pretty early on but it's never really explained what they actually are. We do get told what their purpose is in this society (with Sentinels protecting humans while... more>> Guides get to marry Sentinels) but there isn't much explanation of their abilities beyond Guides being psychic and Sentinels being super-warriors (while also having a mental landscape like a Guide). Both have mental bodies which are often matched to their strength.

Spoiler

Later in the story, we do learn that Guides and Sentinels serve a unique purpose for the monster's ability to reproduce but this is part of the end story twist. It was also heavily hinted at during earlier parts of the story.

[collapse]

The MC is Lin Yuan, a "Guide" who has chosen to join a specific research team after her engagement was broken off. She immediately begins to search through "contaminated zones" but we're never really told why she chooses to do this until a significant portion of the book has passed. Her first encounter with the ML is her rescuing him and discovering that she likes his mental landscape. For the majority of the story, we're told that she has tent**les but then we randomly get someone thinking of her as a Kraken. It makes sense but there is very little build up about it. It's also made very clear that she doesn't really understand human emotion but gradually begins to develop those over the course of the story.

Spoiler

We learn later on that she apparently had a recurring dream that was a memory from her mother who told her to go to certain places to unlock the secrets of the world. But she never thought of this before the story because it was repressed like nearly everything from her childhood as her parents died. But yet she was also repeatedly dreaming about it.

Author isn't very consistent.

[collapse]

The ML is Ni Ji, a powerful "Sentinel" who beings the story with being punished for killing a researcher but the MC reveals the truth of the matter. From that point on, he starts developing a fetish desire for being around the MC which competes with his desire to kill the ones who sent him and his squad on a mission into a contaminated zone that got them all killed. He falls for her first and is hopelessly hooked.

Spoiler

He comes across as a stereotypical soldier until things get a little more relationship based and then he acts like a blushing teenager. Which is kind of valid given that he turns out to be a virg*n despite how messed up their society is.

The ML also becomes part of the rebels as they all view the Nobles as shitty people. Also valid given how they treat the lower class Sentinels as little more than playthings and regularly send them to their deaths just for some of the pre-calamity goods from the contamination zone.

[collapse]

While there is romance between the two, it's more like pining and the two trying to understand how they feel. The MC's interactions with the ML's mental landscape is what starts her on the journey to developing feelings in general. It just takes someone else to tell her that she might be in love with him. The ML, on the other hand, is like a sad puppy out in the rain watching it's owner through a window.

The storyline is mostly good. We have the development of the MC and her skills. While she does start everything off as super powerful, it's not a win-all for each situation. The ML, almost always, ends up arriving to save her just before she dies (or vice versa). There are a few points where also loses. Badly.

Spoiler

Such as her first battle with "Chu" in the Land with No Eyes. She gets her personality practically wiped and temporarily loses her memories. She almost becomes the new Pillar for that zone. The ML managed to partially snap her out of it but it was finding a relic from her mother that made her wake.

[collapse]

The reader is treated on a "need to know" basis when it comes to some details which really makes all the foreshadowing feels more accidental than intentional. While this works for some things, it makes it a little hard to understand what is happening.

Spoiler

Such as "Pillars". We are introduced to the first one pretty quickly but then there never is really an explanation outside of that. Until we learn the purpose of Guides when it comes to the monsters and how every Pillar in each contaminated zone was once a Guide.

Which then further explains that any contaminated zone with a fully mutated Guide for a Pillar, the zone becomes stable. If the Pillar still has traces of their humanity, the zone will expand to claim more humans. Because the monsters need humans in order to parasitize and produce new members of their species.

[collapse]

And then comes the ending. It certainly is a conclusion. But that's all it has going for it.

Spoiler

After revealing the truth of how terrible their society actually is, the MC takes on the Queen while the ML leads the rebels against her base of operations. The MC beats the Queen in a mental battle but only because the Queen had become greedy and consumed other creatures. Which eventually led to her body breaking down.

The MC gets saved from certain death by the ML, they exchange rings and then it mentions how she is now free to choose her path. Nothing else whatsoever.

[collapse]

So this is a recommended but only if you're prepared for the sudden stop with the ending. <<less

5 out of 5!!

It's a rare story.. Completely different from other novels!

The World Building.:

... more>> It's about a world, where the (ancient) humans, incubate and hatched an-unknown-species-alient. They become "greedy"... and started to experiment by injected the unknown-alien blood into human. Unknowingly, it was where the "Tragedy-Of-Mankind" started.

The World become chaotic. The fail-human-expirement-species become undying-monster, while the successful-expriment-human-species become new-type-human-with-alien-bloodline.

Obviously, "both-species" are originaly from the Alien-bloodline.. Goes into never ending wars. The monsters one like to devour the new-humans one. The new-humans one try to fight back.

Unfortunately, non of them (the new human) really realize, that their world they living in was 'Fake'!! Even if theres few peoples started to suspect abt it, they cannot do anything... They 'still' cannot 'un-do' the past-human mistakes.!!

From this Novel plot, we can see.. And also.. Should learned... Never Become Too Greedy!

The Characters.:

Both the MC & ML are intresting. [noting much as some of the reviewer already mention them]

Ending. :

Ending the fake world.. with a uncertain new world..

I do not have enough words to explain to you guys how good this story is. The plot, the characters and the twist and turns seriously it's sooo good. I couldn't put it down, even the MTL version is good enough to be read.

While I had a few moments I wanted to smack the FL, the romance was nice didn't feel force it just kind of flowed to that direction. I cackle a lot too cause the FL is so active and dominating the ML has no chance.

I shed a... more>> few tears with the side character and their tragicness, I wasn't expecting it cause summary which btw is very accurate I was surprised how close it was to the actual scene in the novel. That being said keep in mind that is not the main plot.

The main plot is basically searching for truth, obtaining it and liberation (freedom). Don't want to go into details cause spoilers.

4.5/5 Recommend good read would read again. <<less

That was just breathtaking.

Genuinely, wow. I come across one such novel every year. One novel that just blows my mind. The other novels don't even come close. This is THAT novel.

Synopsis:

Spoiler

A girl, a guide, breaks off an engagement with a cheating sentinel and is in turn looked down upon. According to the world this is sole purpose of a guide's life- marry a sentinel, have a few kids and live that domesticated life. However our MC, quite incapable of feelings, do not care much about what others think. The woman in charge tells her that in order for her request to go work at the Research Centre to go through, she must first help sift through the memories of a criminal sentinel. And thus MC and ML finally meet. It is the start of a revolutionary story of a very underestimated guide and a sentinel whose only goal in life is revenge.

[collapse]

If you like novels where the society and nobles are torn down, where you can feel the intensity of love between the MC and ML, a found-family is eventually formed, where MC goes to all ends to find the truth of the world, then this is the novel for you.

Of course I recommend this beautiful novel a hundred times. <<less

Actual rating 3.85/5 stars.

I think because this has a very high rating (4.7 with 100 raters at this time) that my expectation to it was superbly high, even with how this one was just newly translated. It was decent, had a solid world-building, but it suffers sometimes from poor execution.

Surprisingly I was not new with this world set-up Why? Cause I have already read a novel like this, with new system for guideverse, with mental bodies, the white tower and all. This is the second time I have read this... more>> system, I have read guideverse before but most of them were just 'sex, sex' which kinda ick me, so I am not sure if this one was the original. But if so, because someone had copied it and claimed it was their original alteration, I was shocked seeing an older book than it with similar settings and alteration. Reading this I was put into the unavoidable comparison.

And this one is better in most aspects. Most of what I like about it was from the first quarter of the book. I like the MC and ML characters. I was excited exploring them and was rooting for them to follow their goals.

I was really entertained, but as the story continues, it became stale. It felt like the development was already made by the quarter half or halfway of the story and coupled with the not so interesting overall goal, it quite fell down for me.

Especially as the execution was meh at most. As a book heavy in action, the author tells instead of showing it. Like they entered a contaminated zone and went out having a lot of things taken. They did not narrate what happened inside.

The fight scenes too were mostly narrated instead of showing what happened. Instead of telling how the characters react or fight with the monsters. The author would just narrate that the 'situation was dire, and someone fight hardly, this character got injured and then they won or escaped'. It lacked execution. Like we know how this character fights, we want to know how they were injured, we want to know how they were defeated. Most of the time, the author just summarized it and that was it.

This happened so many times, what confused me is that there were also scenes where there were decent fighting sequence, is this lazy writing or the author just dont have the imagination to enact heavy actions scenes. Even with those with fighting sequence, there were scenes were instead of showing us what happened, they just tell us that they were fighting valiantly. We want to know how they fought valiantly and how they react to it.

The available action sequence too was a mess sometimes. The pacing was off, the introduction sometimes were abrupt without telling us important info like what the enemy looked like, where they were fighting and how the fight was initiated. The fight scenes sadly was not to my standards and was subpar.

So I have to enjoy the other part, romance and character growth, and I was invested. BUt that was only from the quarter of the book. AFter that I think they were just going with the main plot, that also failed to matter to me what's with them not telling use why they were doing it which they only did by almost a quarter to the ending. The main plot was not that interesting and then with it interfering, the romance growth was slowly moving compare to how fast it was from the start.

By this point, I was done by their stares, ponding, and ambiguous actions. Just date people. Why are you dragging this development too long? It would have been good if they followed the main plot while dating. It would have been terrible if they only date by the last chapters, sigh.

The main plot was nothing that interesting to me. It felt linear, just trying to solve the mystery of the zones, but they already hinted a lot of reason from the previous arcs, which already removed the mystery to me. I was also pissed that the characters act nothing with this information. Are they s*upid, just to continue the plot, or are they indifferent to it, just not caring which make following the main plot pointless.

It was not terrible overall, but it was nothing that phenomenal. It was average at best and that means that it was worth your time exploring but just don't expect much complicated and world busting writing. <<less

This is a fantastic story. It's straight Guideverse, but the female guide is a really interesting character and the story has a bit of a subtle f*mdom vibe. The world building is also really cool - it's not just a generic "suddenly there were gates" type story. There's some spots where it's obvious smut takes place, but the story takes a fade-to-black approach. Still not sure how I feel about that overall, but I really liked the romance element.

The novel carves out a distinct niche in the post-apocalyptic genre, blending the Guideverse concept with a rare BG pairing and sharp, original storytelling. Its take on spirit animals feels fresh — particularly with the ML's orca and the FL's group of tent**les (and their amusing thoughts about coveting the "fish"), which add both humor and texture. The story also handles the dynamic of a strong FL with surprising finesse.

The provided description (synopsis) only hints at certain events of first arc of the novel, so don't be deceived. The plot... more>> is so much more than something this simple and common. The world they inhabit is brutal yet compelling, layered with political undercurrents and a disturbing depth of corruption. The novel's greatest strengths lie in its well-rounded worldbuilding and its commentary on power, survival, and corruption — themes that mirror real-world systems with unsettling clarity. Some arcs in the middle lose momentum, and the end feels rather abrupt, but the story maintains a distinctive voice and strange, captivating charm. It's certainly something unconventional and smartly crafted. <<less

I really love this novel. The male lead is cold and stoic on the outside, but deep down, he's a total softie. This is one of the few Chinese novels I genuinely enjoy. It's not cliché or cringe at all. The female lead is strong, independent, and doesn't constantly rely on the male lead to save her.

Their relationship is really refreshing too. It's like watching two versions of Mr. Darcy slowly fall for each other—awkward, intense, but incredibly sweet.

My only gripe is that the ending felt a bit rushed. I... more>> wish there had been a little more time to wrap things up properly.

Still, I absolutely loved the story as a whole. <<less

Pretty good so far, but there's a side character who's 'mental body' (this guideverse's version of a spirit animal) is a chinchilla, but the author (or maybe the translator?) doesn't seem to now what a chinchilla is. It keeps being described as a white kitten. Chinchillas are rodents, which is almost the opposite of a cat.

It is actually a good novel.

  1. Cool world building and desceiptions
  2. Post apocalyptic world
  3. Slow romance but burns like fire once it starts
  4. Developed characters
The Synopsis of this novel is an understatement of the vast and colorful world written definitely a must read ❤️👌

My only complain or rather a pain, is that the author didn't explore more about the mysteries around the characters like I would have expected it to be explained at least after the main story. Can't they give even one extra chapter😭

Totally a recommended read.

I was surprised to find out that I couldn't put this own down. Basing on the summary alone I was totally expecting a dog blood face slapping melodrama, but I was so wrong.

I agree with the other reviewers here that there were scenes that you would want to smack the heads of both the FL and ML (sometimes out of frustration and other times just so you could make them kiss) but even then I find both of them lovely and adorable.

The plot and premise was... more>> genuinely delivered. The characters were likeable, charismatic and have their own developments. It might be because I MTLed the whole novel that sometimes I got lost in some of the delivery of the storyline but even then it was still readable and engaging. <<less
