I havn't read too far into this one and will only mention stuff in the first couple chapters.

A heads up though, the first chapter is basically just a league of legends fight, The actual story begins in chapter 2 aside like one line at the end of chapter 1.

It's a longer story so I don't know how much it will change, but so far this is about a college student who suddenly became female out of nowhere, was violently ab*sed by family causing permanent disabilities in vision and her leg.... more>> Things happen and her parents are no longer living with her, so she escapes by gaming and living off of cup ramen and plans on doing so until she runs out of money, in which case she will just die. MC is very standoffish in a chat setting, but is very meek in person due to trauma.

A bit of spoilers past this point to chapter 14ish, not too crazy since only a couple chapters are out in English.

Spoiler

The story picks up from there, going into how she is suddenly better at games, there are many references to LoL in it and her matches, to a point where she is considered a hacker and is asked to prove herself, which she thinks is s*upid. Then someone who may or may not be a hallucination (i honestly have no idea) tells her she can use this opportunity to wring out promises on a chat forum of how if she isn't actually cheating she can get free stuff. She does this and people find out she's a cripple, and then the story turns more into a more healing tone, but. As far as I've read so far, she hasn't streamed on her own, but I believe it will go there but no idea how 300+ chapters will change the story.

[collapse]

All in all, if you can get over a bit of that streamer/gamer jargon and things like that, its not a bad story if you like a kinda messed up MC a streamer story. Would recommend <<less

Hoo boy, this was certainly a read. Before starting, I'd like to be very clear that this review will be mixed with a tad of emotion because unfortunately, I've been what the MC has been through albeit, to a lesser extent.

Despite the tags, the story itself is about healing and regrowth (Sadly, not that her feet can... Too dark? Noel would have appreciated my joke...)

This story definitely deserves the 5 stars I'm giving it.

... more>> As usual, TLDR is at the end if you just want the summary.

Obvious trigger warnings,

SELF-HARM

su*cide IDOLIZATION

DEPRESSION

CHILD ab*se

These topics are one of the more prominent features so if you can't stomach such topics, I suggest you turn around now. Though, it's mostly subtle hints, in my review at least.

World-building.

We begin with the obvious, the genderbend. The simplest form of the premise is that a male, who has been living as that gender for 20 years, suddenly turned female. At face value, it's absurd and has plenty of opportunity to be one of comedy work, however, that's not the tone this novel went with.

Genderbent as a genre itself has two main usage, firstly, to combat gender norms of a man not being able to live as a woman and vice-versa which to an extent, is a simplification of being a transgender but I digress, secondly, to excuse or validate same-s*x relationship under the guise of "Oh, this person used to be the opposite s*x so it's technically straight!", and yes, it has its influence as the latter, HOWEVER, the genderbend aspect has more story relevance because all of the ab*se and pain the MC went through was solely due to just that.

The MC turning from a man to a woman, biologically that is. Almost like someone switched the souls of someone who had been raised as a man to the body of a woman.

Someone can dismiss it as basically transitioning, HOWEVER, that is far from the case here. The MC had no say in such matters, she did not consent to this and yet, she is paying a price for an absurdity out of her control. It's obvious enough that the MC has the traditional family and traditional values set by generation that did not have the freedom of expression as we do today.

The MC, too, upholds these values herself, for obvious reasons. She was raised to be a man, a son to be proud of, a trophy almost rather than be herself. In a way, it's internalized hatred, whether misogynistic in nature or not, had to have been built upon years of subtle ab*se and expectations rather than one explosive accident.

Not to mention, the concept of abruptly turning into the opposite gender is a horror of a concept itself, to lose one's autonomy without consent is horrifying. Society itself already had societal norms that it encroaches upon everyone, one of which is gender norms. The MC, out of everyone, knows this too, it's why she, herself, is horrified of her own body, not just because of her father's ab*se but also the fact that she couldn't recognize herself. There was no resemblance to her and what she was before and that alone terrified her.

Why wouldn't she? She can't even look in her own reflection because all she would see is a stranger.

Speaking of which, let's talk about the MC, shall we?

Character development

I'll make this clear already, Noel is one of the most human characters I have ever read about. Partly because of how relatable she is but as well as everything she does, has a reason why she does it. The clear elephant in the room, depression. It was already hinted at the title but I'd like to shine a focus in it first because... That's the state the MC was in after the events of the accident happened and honestly? The depiction of such is quite honestly, staggering especially for someone like me who did, in fact, have a phase similar to what the MC was going through. The clear neglect in personal health, other than the bare minimum of just... Eating and even then, everything is just so damn tiring to do. It's almost a hassle, really. And despite the vocal declaration of the MC of just waiting until she died, a part of her still wanted to live. Why else would she delay? Why else would she at least take care of the fundamentals of living? Why else would she allow herself to drift rather than sink far below to drown? That's because in a way, she wanted to be saved. To finally have something to live for even by a little because the MC herself has a mentality of, "If everything is hopeless, I might as well not try to have my hopes up." But even then, she tries to live. Hell, even in the midst of everything, she wanted someone to care, to give her affection again, to make her feel like she is worthy of living. We even see her desires manifest through an imaginary friend almost, someone who cares enough to make sure you're alive but sensitive enough to allow you to have boundaries. It's no wonder MC fell for her, hell, if someone was kind to me back then, I would have been hooked, lined and sinkered.

It's truly heartwarming that the MC actually gets what she deserves as the chapter goes on because it is still true that a part of her still holds the suicidal tendencies even after everything, the thoughts and opinions of such that has been built up cannot magically be healed over a course of a few weeks but it does get lessened. This includes her tendencies to self harm evident to how she'd choke herself to keep the thoughts at bay.

Still, even here, the MC is an unreliable narrator due to the fact that she had been desensitized to the pain that this... Became her normal, and as the further chapters go, it's hard to go back into the darkness once you taste the light. It's hard to intentionally or unintentionally neglect yourself when people start to care, it's hard to accept kindness when you're not accustomed to it.

The Plot:

I'll go through this quickly because this is becoming too long but the plot itself is essentially the process of healing, whether big or small, will always have an impact. The pacing is great and the translation work is fantastic. Everything flows naturally and the pacing is just right. Everything is just honestly a chef's kiss.

Side note: there is an aspect that I've neglected but for a good reason, the disability the MC has as a result of the ab*se she faced from her father. Yes, this is still a critical point in the MC's character and delves deeper as to why she stayed in her situation to begin with. Society, itself, is designed to function to mostly able bodied people, neglecting the people who suffered from disabilities all together with little to no accommodation. It's why the MC couldn't continue her studies or why she couldn't get a job, it's all because of what she lacked physically and because society is not built around people who suffered the same pains as her but ultimately, I believe that like the others, this is simply a trait or an aspect of her character but not in it's entirety, I won't speak in behalf of people with disabilities given that I haven't lost a foot nor vision as far as I know but what I do know, however, is that this is simply a faucet that the MC has and does not define her as a whole and I believe that this holds true to any people who suffered similar, if not, identical problems like MC.

Side note 2: Apologies if the quality of my review lacked, there's so much more I wished to talk about BC the MC herself is such an intriguing and complex character and I absolutely did not do her justice but unfortunately for me, elaborating would cause this to be longer.

I did cry three times over the MC if that counts as something valuable.

TLDR:

Overall? The novel is 100% worth the read if you like streaming, gaming and or novels that are healing despite a big part of it is LoL (League of Legends... Augh...), though, do note that romance is barely there as far as the translation goes currently, you'll have to squint for your Yuri. <<less

So far its pretty ok, I personally quite like it but tragedy is a fairly full genre. While it isn't exactly a pleasant story, at least not at the start, it seperates itself from the standard tragedy slop slightly by (so far) making it entirely past tense and focusing on what seems to be a slow recovery from it. There is no overarching revenge plot, no overdramatic meltdowns (yet, might happen?), and it isn't just full of self deprecation. The character knows what happened was not their fault, that is... more>> in and of itself a positive in my opinion. The other review gives a fairly solid summary, so I don't need to do that. If I keep reading, I will improve the rating from 3.

It would be nice from a reader perspective if for a certain character pronouns would remain consistent outside of dialogue (in the narration or thoughts), it is entirely valid way of doing it for that character but outside of dialogue or messages relating to that character it would flow better. That's just MY OPINION, in this case this switch back and forth is INTENTIONAL, since it gets indirectly clarified pretty much every third chapter the character is in there is no real issue.

As a side note, the TL is also fairly high quality. I realise I am not supposed to mention the website specifically, but in this case I want to give praise to them and this seems as good a place as any. The changes they made to where they publish it was a drastic improvement and I applaud it, and the work the TL does to make the story readable. <<less

I love this novel. It has all the points I like: protagonist with a tragic past, people who sympathize with him (in a nice way), healing of the protagonist's heart, and yuri, of course.

By the way, here the game “League of Legends” is an important point of the story, but in my opinion (as someone who has never played League of Legends) it doesn't become tedious to read when they talk about the game.

This novel is not a masterpiece, but it is enjoyable to read.

Most of all, I love Noelle-chan... more>> She's the best!

(Sowwy for the english. I'm mexican. I don't speak english.) <<less
