In the stables, Qing Jiu rescues a young girl. This girl, with a stubborn streak, insists on following them. Qing Jiu allows her to stay, watching her grow day by day, only to eventually realize that what seemed to be a mere stubborn rock is in fact a precious jade.

Qing Jiu reflects, “Today I’ve found a seed, buried it in the soil, and nurtured it day and night with great care. Will a delicate flower bloom from it next year?”

In the depths of despair, Yu’er was given a helping hand. Qing Jiu’s arrival was the first ray of light piercing through her darkness, and since then, she has stayed by her side. Even if she is as elusive as a flower in a mirror or the moon’s reflection on water, being a bit closer to her is enough.

Yu’er wonders, “Today, a bright moon settled in my heart. I chase after her relentlessly, day and night. Can I be closer to her next year?”

A really enjoyable read!

For those who are curious but want a detailed synopsis that isn't TOO spoiler-ish, here you go:

Spoiler

This novel follows Yu'er, a fourteen year old girl who, during the weakest moments of her life, is saved by Qing Jiu (FL).

Yu'er then desperately and very resolutely attempts to stay by Qing Jiu's side. Cue Yu'er yearning for or admiring QJ at least a little bit every few chapters.

It is found that Yu'er has a good aptitude and she, under the guidance of her group of friends, improves her skills and learns to stand her own ground. The characters in her group all have their own proper personalities, perspectives, grievances, strengths, and shortcomings. They all also have their own little dynamics with one another too!

The group explore and travel the martial arts world to complete various tasks. Through them we learn details of the various backstories, relationships, and personalities of the main cast. The world is vibrant and filled with various locations, groups, treasures, and interesting personalities. Because of Yu'er's quite sheltered past and young age, we learn about this world along with her.

I swear this novel puts you on a rollercoaster ride with all the eventful fights, hearty banter, situations, and the intense and at times potentially heartbreaking moments. With the revelation of new information and yearning sprinkled in all along the ride. The group itself is quite powerful, and the MC herself does improve at a questionably fast rate however tension and challenge isn't lost.

In terms of the dynamic between the MC and FL, Yu'er is a stubborn and adorable girl with a kind heart who you can't help but spoil and support. Qing Jiu is a powerful, mischievous, and teasing figure who is also quite mysterious - you can't always tell what she's thinking and even the characters don't know much of her background. At times you do feel quite bad for Yu'er due to her intense emotions towards QJ but it is understandable considering the context.

The author does a good job of roping your attention and keeping it. It isn't entirely unique or earth-shattering but executes its plot well. The pacing is also quite good between arcs, there weren't many points where I grew bored.

In regard to translation, my experience reading has been both smooth-sailing and enjoyable! There are no stand out moments where I've gotten annoyed or distracted from the translation quality. The other stories translated by DragonTL are quite good as well. Definite recommend. <<less

I really enjoy this! The story focuses a lot on adventuring and world building, and it moves just fast enough to keep you excited, while also having sweet or funny moments to add more depth our dear band of heroes. The plot also weaves in delightful foreshadowing and transitions well between arcs--all with their own themes and perspectives that frame the story with an occasional thoughtful coming-of-age undertone.

As of ch58, the romance is on the backburner because our little Yu is still young, but there's certainly enough yearning and relationship... more>> development to keep one assured of... future entanglements ;)
Spoiler

(legit I swear not 3 chapters go by without Yu'er gazing thoughtfully at her goddess QJ, she's such a yearner lmao)

[collapse]
Already, some chapters have had some extremely sweet moments (they are so cute together!!!!), and these interactions reassure me that the author can be trusted to do their relationship justice. However, outside of our main CP from the story description, the other characters all have their own ties and stories that are individually interesting, so there's always funny things going on!

Finally, in terms of translation, it definitely gets a green light. There's TL notes at the bottom to describe unfamiliar terms, writing that is clear and fluent, rapid updates, and fast responses to fix any bugs. It's really a treat to be able to read such a gem. While the story isn't perfect, with some suspicious power scaling shenanigans, like the speed of Yu'er's development, these issues are hardly glaring and if anything, they're complimented with thoughtful situations that avert expectations or challenge them in new ways, so the author manages to keep a sense of tension despite everything. Overall, if you're in for an epic adventure through Jianghu, filled with spirit, honor, and longing, definitely give this a shot! <<less

This has to be one of my all-time favorite GL wuxia novels. It was an amazing journey from start to finish. The story is so much more than just romance — the world-building and the depth of the plot are incredible. You can tell a lot of thought and effort went into creating a rich, immersive world, and the characters and their growth kept me hooked throughout. It’s rare to find a novel that balances action, intrigue, and emotional depth so perfectly.

Same author as the dragon, so u cam expect it to be both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I thought it would be more chill since there was no tragedy tag but our MCs went thru alot already when the story started. As u slowly read about their individual stories u realize why they treasure each.

if ur like me who hates reading heartbreaking stories you should still give this one a try. Its worth the tears ull shed.

I've read this author's other work, The Dragon, and that became my favorite novel so I was expecting this to be good. However, I didn't expect this to be THIS good. I was left with a sense of loss after I finished it. Like I had to part with precious friends, because you feel like you're part of their group sharing all their experiences. The world building and character depth is amazing.

This is the story of 7 (later 8) people who are loners, misfits, orphans. People who have suffered... more>> great loss and pain who eventually end up finding each other and become travel companions. Each with their own unique personalities, skills and stories. I loved them all equally. This is the first time I couldn't pick a favorite character in a story. Even the supporting side characters are all likeable and makes you want to read more about them.

Spoiler

Members of the group: Qing Jiu, Yu'er, Tang Linzhi, Yan Li, Hua Lian, Mo Wen, Qi Tianzhu and Yang Chun.

Yang Chun is the only spoiler here since he joins them a bit later.

The main couple's romance is slow burn and there's a small time skip, but this is one of those slow burns and time skips that are necessary for a richer story and plot advancement. Be patient, because the reward is absolutely worth it.

There are two side couples.
Spoiler

Tang Linzhi and Liu Xiu starts with them picking a fight on their first meeting, but it's funny and cute whenever they show up together.

Yan Li and Wu Yu is a sad and complicated relationship filled with the pain of love and betrayal, but it ends on a good and hopeful note.

[collapse]

Some brief moments might seem less interesting or less important, but later you'll see that it comes back and makes sense, like things coming into full circle. This author is very good at planning things ahead and tying things up well.

This was a fantastic and satisfying journey with an equally fantastic and satisfying ending, leaving you wanting more. It has become one of my top novels and I will be re-reading it once in a while.

Absolutely 10/10 and a must read.

Edit after re-reading:

I highly recommend a re-read after finishing the extra chapters at the end. Once you know Qing Jiu's past and how she met the other characters, the story hits hard and you read it with a completely different perspective. For example, Qing Jiu's seasickness is funny on first read, but will give you heartache once you know why she developed it. Or her love for roasted chestnuts and wine, or why she always only drinks half the bowl of her medicines... Qing Jiu absolutely deserved her happiness at the end and I cannot be happier for her! <<less

5/5 and a warm hug. I obviously checked out the novel because of the Yuri tag but the story was gripping and I don't even mind that the love story is a slow burn. If anything, it adds a lot more to the story.

Buckle up before you start reading the story, because it definitely deal with some uncomfortable issues and falls under hurt/comfort & found family tropes. Pay attention to the TWs that the translator has kindly marked and stay safe!

More in depth review with possible unmarked minor spoilers below... more>> - major spoilers will be hidden under spoiler tag.

The novel was truly a rollercoaster of emotions. There were moments I caught myself smiling, warmed by the characters' interactions and moments when I clutched my chest in agony alongside the characters. I found myself growing very, very fond of these adorable dorks and I keep wondering if I should review each of their individual story personally because I adore them very much (at least two of them are assassins and they've all killed people so if I talk about people like this irl it's definitely bewildering).

For starter, we mainly see the world through Yu'er's eyes and it's an interesting view indeed, as we are explained about this particular world of jianghu through her companions who travel alongside her. Despite Yu'er being the main POV of this novel, I truly believe this is an novel of two main characters, the other one being Qing Jiu, obviously, since she sets a lot of things in motions, even if we can't see them at the moment until they're elaborated afterwards.

It's no surprise that they're our main pairing in this novel but please note that at the start of the story, Yu'er is around 14 and Qing Jiu around 20. I normally wouldn't touch any novels with this age gap but consider that during the ancient time/jianghu setting, they normally have a different set of rules where 14-16 yo are considered as adults already since people used to have low mortality rates. Nothing overly intimate really happens until they're both in their 20s so fair warning if you're sensitive about this.

They're both people who carry a lot of pain in a way that seemed to almost complement each other. Yu'er grows up in a terrible childhood, not knowing who her family is due to circumstances that are truly awful

but she finds her family later on

while Qing Jiu has a well-adjusted, if not happy, childhood, and loses them in the worst of ways (this is explained more in depth in the extras - I had to skim the early parts in the extras because it's too fresh and painful for me personally).

These two, along with 5 (eventually) 6 other people later form a traveling group within jianghu - all with their own stories and lovable quirks. I want to write about each one of them in vivid details but just yapping about some of them:

Tang Linzhi

Spoiler

I wish we can know more about Linzhi's possible love life omg the author teased us and just leaves it to imagination. It's cruel, but at least it seems to have a positive note. Her growth and change in perspective is admirable and while at first it annoyed me that there was a hint of love line between her and Liu Xiu, she slowly makes up for it.

[collapse]

Yan Li

Spoiler

Almost all of them have awful back stories but Yan Li's one is just rough, and pretty similar to Qing Jiu, in a sense that they both carry the guilt of being indirectly responsible of the demise of people they love most.

What's worse (in a way) for Yan Li is that she truly loves Wu Yu, but is unable to reconcile that with her guilt and loss. This volatile relationship is eerily similar to Yu'er's mother relationship with the moonless sect dude (I forgot his name). Wu Yu and the dude are both obsessed with the object of their love interests to the point of kidnapping and SA.

It's truly an uncomfortable parallel and Wu Yu is not excused just because she's a woman. Only because Yan Li's complicated feelings for her that makes this a more complex dynamic between them, but what happens in the novel when the gang goes to Ji Le City is definitely dubcon, or non-con at worst. I feel for Yan Li very much.

Also it must be tiring being Wu Yu's subordinates because they really have to go everywhere and do everything just because their boss is simping over a girl she betrayed and now trying to chase after.

Side note that's not really related to Yan Li's story: I really don't like how the author/characters try to ask the readers to sympathise with Yu'er's mother's kidnapper/assaulter. Hello? This man is also ready to kill Yu'er to join her mother due to his own twisted logic and they're trying to "poor guy I kinda get it" him??

[collapse]

Yang Chun:

Spoiler

Nothing much to say about him as his background story is not as elaborate as the others, but special mention of him nonetheless because he's like an annoying, funny, gossipy brother you can't help but love and be annoyed with.

When he gets sad at the end because he thought Qing Jiu is taking bad Yu'er's offer of all of them living together, my heart squeezed a little from so much fondness. He's not the best person but he's definitely loyal towards his people.

[collapse]

I might come back later in the future to edit my rants here since this is written haphazardly at the height of emotions after finishing the novel, but as it stands, this is how I feel about the novel and the characters. I wish we get some idyllic future extras alongside the side stories but knowing these 8 people, idyllic is probably not in their dictionary.

Kudos to DragonTL as they never miss with their novels selection so far. I read The Dragon and Snake Who Just Wants to Cultivate (...) and enjoyed both very much, so I was eager for this one too. As expected, it lives up to the expectation and I'm looking forward to their next project if they decide to take in a new one. <<less

I really love this story and the dragon by the same author. It become one of my top favorites baihe novel. It get you hook, sink and wanted more and more. The drama, comedy and romance are mix well together. Nothing is force at all.

Thank you translator for letting me read this masterpiece. Highly recommended to everyone.

If only the author can write more extras about their journey after the ending and QJ killing those two.

DragonTL (the translator of this book) simply doesn't miss.

This story is a wonderful blend of action and romance. Everything is built up throughout the story and you get invested in the lives of every character in the main cast. I love how the story is able to keep up suspense and keep me interested in learning more about not only the mysteries of the world but also about the characters backgrounds. Like the other review have said, the story does struggle a bit with power scaling

Spoiler

Like you can tell the author is trying to make the star lords so awesome but also try to keep them reasonably powered, which ends up in a weird situation where they train for 6 years nonstop but seem around the same power level they were previously. Maybe it's due to the fact that theres too many characters to give them their shining moment but they're doing my girl tang linzhi dirtyy lol.

[collapse]

But I don't think that should stop anyone from reading this wonderful story. It really hooks you in and keeps you wondering what'll happen next. The world the author has built is so interesting and well thought out. Oh and the side couples are so stinking cute as well. Definitely one of my favorite martial arts novels to date! <<less

Truly one of the best novels I've read here!

The plot is extremely interesting, the character development is bittersweet and well written, and just about everything about the novel is amazing!

The only thing I wanted more from this was some equally wholesome chapters for the two side couples. But other than that, this story was a great read and literally, anyone interested in martial arts and Yuri should read this!

Also, great work by the translators! Thank you for making this amazing novel accessible for us!

The novel was amazing. The characters were amazing. Most of it was amazing.

The reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 was just because of the pacing. At some parts, it felt so slow and got dragged. Others felt so fast. ... more>>
Spoiler

But because of that 6 year time skip, it kinda made me reluctant to keep reading the book. It just felt tacky.

[collapse]

The characters were well-written. All had in-depth backstories that made you feel like you couldn't help but root for them. The romance was slow because our little Yu'er was small, but it was still well-written that you just kept reading for the plot. Of course, the romance kicks off and then... pauses... but comes back again.

The ending wasn't that worth it for me, but the journey to the ending was. It was a good book. I wouldn't read it again, but it was enjoyable.

Shoutout to DragonTL, love their translations! Hope they continue translating Xianxia novels and wish them the best! <<less
