Yaoniang was the concubine of Jin Wang in the last life, but she had only been doted on for a few months before she died.

Once in a while, I come across novels like these: highly rated but are absolute tr*sh.

It's okay to have a s*um of a hero and a s*upid ditz for a heroine but the story has to be done well, otherwise, you end up with something like Jin wang dotes on his concubine.

Prince Jin is bought up in the palace accustomed to all kinds of women but for some reason is randomly attracted to this super hot bangable nanny. And the nanny has no remarkable traits whatsoever other than her 'bumpy' body which the author mentions in every chapter. I truly felt sorry for Prince Jin's wife who is a lesbian and is actually clever. But instead of having a friendly relationship with her (she bats for the other team, what can you do?) he behaves as if she owes him. Isn't that hypocritical?

What really spoiled the novel was how the ditzy heroine had a second chance and did nothing different to change her life. She followed the exact sequence of her past life, made excuses and depended on Prince Jing. If he loses his interest in her, she'll end up miserably again anyway. What a waste of rebirth. <<less

Really good novel but I'm removing two stars because ML is a colossal d*ck. I mean, he has serious issues. The fact of their society is that the women have to fight for their survival by getting his favor but he brings back people and marries them, then abandons them, imprisoned in his backyard - which is cold violence really. Like, if u know you can't do it then either don't marry, or make sure to fully disclose it and only marry women who are okay with it giving them... more>> the assurance that they can live well even if they don't have kids etc instead of this whole pretense.

And when they absolutely have no choice - eg when princess jin's father wrote to force her to get pregnant or accept her stepsister into the harem, or when Hu concubine tries to get a son - if they try to attract him in any way he reacts SO VICIOUSLY!! He yells at them, thinks they are acting like brothel women, that they are 'dirty' and 'disgusting', sneers at them as being 'hungry', 'animals' etc. Ridiculous, much? They're literally your wives, is it so abnormal of them to try to seduce you?? The only way they can have any sense of security or guarantee of life and wellbeing is to get a son, okay. Because you didn't give them any assurance otherwise. Even if he HATES them, this sort of resentment and the words he says are too much!! [Esp considering how utterly skewed the power dynamic is!]

Even though the women are the 'villain' characters I still can't stomach this. But we as readers are supposed to be okay w this as it is some kind of proof ML is 'clean' and only moves for the FL

With all his being disgusted w his wives for trying to sleep with him you might think he's a pure monk - HA! In the past life he treated FL as a 'toy' only to vent, only using her for s*x. Every time. And it was a lot of times. And in this life he keeps sleazing around FL, almost one of the first sentences he tells her - his daughter's wetnurse for god's sake - is 'take off your clothes'. Bluntly ordering.

I am SO glad he suffered after finding out she died, deserves it. <<less

Imo, this is one of the better historical novels mostly because it doesn't have any of my dealbreakers: no op leads, no harem/ characters all falling over the lead, lead is unrealistically skilled/knowledgeable.

The FL is definitely realistic. She's from an ordinary background and her skills are all explained by her past experiences. She's not amazingly cunning or such, but it's nice to see her trying and to grow in her own confidence.

The ML is cold and suprisingly isn't all-powerful all the time, needing other's counsel and help. He also doesn't like women due to some traumatic experiences in his past and it was one of the more interesting plot points, too.

also reincarnated and just wants to be with the mom he wasn't able to meet in the last life. Even though smart for a kid, I like that he doesn't have much ability beyond using his baby charms. He's as much of a cunning person as his father and helps along the plot without anyone realizing it.

It's frustrating to see a female-oriented novels being so misogynistic and this novel is particularly nasty.

The internal harem conflicts the most appealing aspect of this novel. It is interesting to see a realistic portray of the hierarchy in a harem and seeing the balance of power within the harem swaying between the contenders. However, the author ruined it with the deep misogynistic themes. Indeed, the schemes of women are truly heinous and they deserve to be punished for that, but the author seems particularly determined to portray the female characters... more>> in the worst way possible by nitpicking in specific aspects of their identity (pretty disappointing when you see some intricate schemes, but it devolves into a slut-shaming fest)

When the ML married Consort Jin, he repeatedly tried to approach her for s*x. He obsessed over the fact that many men pursued her and he was gleeful for being the one to marry her. He treated her as a prize. The ML had called Consort Jin "repulsive" and declared that he would never have s*x with her because she is a lesbian.


The ML called Side Consort Hu "dirty" for using seduction tactic (implicitly pointing to her association with a brothel).
He humiliates them by giving them the cold shoulder which signifies to the entire household that they have fallen out of favor (their status plummets when this happens).

The ML is very petty for punishing the women so severely for these kinds of offenses

The author is so determined to villainize the women that we see ML contradicting himself in his bouts of condemning the women. The ML calls his wives dirty for trying to have s*x with him, but he himself is guilty of using his authority to pressure the MC to have s*x with him.

When the MC kept refusing his advances, he took advantage of her dire situation to make a deal with her. The ML offered to raise the MC's status and give her a huge sum of money.

Offering materialistic benefits for s*x is prostitution yet the author tried to portray this as love because the smut was consensual.


Pretty ironic consider he shamed his wives for trying to get those exact same benefit

Another shady aspect about their relationship is the MC's baby. The author reveals that the ML is the father from the get-go, but from the author's notes, it seems like the author intends to portray it as a romantic coincidence

The MC was intoxicated and was completely unaware of who the father was. This is clearly drug r*pe, yet I get the impression that the author intends to downplay this incident as a romantic coincidence (a coincidence that the man who r*ped her is the love of her life and that it's not r*pe because the rapist is her love interest)

I have not actually reached this point, but that's the feeling I have based on the shady nature of the deal they made.

Another big downer is how superficial their relationship is, esp considering how it started. I've reach ch 59 which a quarter of the novel and the MC and ML has yet to show any chemistry outside of s*x. Sure, there are moments when he goes out of his way to help her, but when you think about what motivates him to do so, it's pretty depressing.

I kid you not, in the early chapter of this novel, all the ML constantly fantasized about MC's big breasts (yes, he has a breast fetish which becomes more obvious later on in the novel).

For some inexplicable reason, he only likes MC's breast and the bodies of every other women repulses him. (Wtf? Is her breast really that magically more better than everyone else's?)

Every time the ML visited the MC, it was always to have s*x. He never care to make casual chats. (Tbh, the MC's personality is too boring for them to have any interesting conversations and the two have yet to show any common interests outside of sex)

This novel is by far my favorite novel among the works of this author. I have completed MTL-ing this and I must say every chapter got me hooked.

Yes this is a cliche story of rebirth and starting over again but what makes it different from the others is that this is not all about revenge. Yao Niang just want to live well for her baby and she actually did not go to the 'I wanna kill you all' revenge. Actually the story does not solely focuses on her side alone... more>> but you can see the other people POV on why they have such actions in the novel. I like that not all the villain goes to the destruction path and no turning point and redemption in their lives. I like the humor and the internal dialog of the characters especially Baobao. Most of all I like that it has the right amount of hot stuff between Jin Wang and Yao Niang (though it's very painful to read in MTL lol).

This is a worthwhile novel to read. Some may disagree but it all goes down to preferences.

There were so many 5 star ratings that I thought to give this story a shot, but I'm sorry I couldn't bear to finish after like 3 chapters.

A lot of my dislike for this novel is due to the writing style and translation quality. It's aggravating to read. Sure, you get it, but it's like trying to drink soup with a fork... Like every time the soup falls back into the bowl, you scream a little. Also, the English sounds awkward but it's not like English is every translator's forte.

My... more>> impression of the FL is that she's not very bright, weak and really hot. The ML doesn't seem all that likable either. Also, annoying relatives and filial piety traps.

I couldn't take it, but maybe you will. A lot of other people seem to like it. Just don't expect perfection... <<less

How should I describe it? It's very realistic. Unlike those clever and witty transmigrated/reincarnated girls in most historical light novels, the FL in this one is a common woman who has trouble seeing through the schemes of the inner courtyard and just wants to keep her head down, do a good job, get paid and get out. She doesn't want to become a concubine or a man's bed toy; she just wants to start her own business. It's such a small and unassuming ambition for us in the modern world.... more>> In that way, it is just a little suffocating to read, as she spends her time fearfully holding her breath and tiptoeing around her masters as they smile and plot against each other.

The ML is best described as "good... for the standards of the era". He's thus far quite difficult to read, even to the reader who has the benefit of objectivity. <<less

Compared to the author's earlier works, I think the author has regressed in writing when it comes to this novel. With each new book, the heroine's IQ drops. A ditzy heroine can be funny and interesting to read about (for example, the MC in Unruly Phoenix Xiaoyao), but not with the way the author writes her. I was getting bored with endless loop of ML being aroused by the sight of MC breastfeeding baby and then MC and ML having s*x, and I stopped reading this novel shortly after its... more>> revealed why ML is "traumatized" towards other women and why he treats his wife badly.

He sees her having s*x with another women and that disgusts him so much that it traumatizes him. That lasts until he gets mesmerized by MC breastfeeding his daughter.

Update June 2021: The new translator, Travis Translations, is doing a great job, and their translations are much easier to read. The previous translator's links don't work anymore, so Travis Translations is re-posting the older chapters (by the previous translator) when they can, with a few edits. Hopefully this will make the older chapters easier to read. The listing is messy, but kudos to the Travis Translations for trying to clean up and post the initial chapter translations.

Original review: I read up to chapter 34 then MTL'd the rest of... more>> the novel. Yao Niang was a favoured concubine of Jin Wang when she was poisoned by a jealous rival. She is reborn into her earlier self, but still ends up hopelessly entangled with Jin Wang. Yao Niang isn't OP, she's just a simple, kind woman who's trying to survive by avoiding her original fate of becoming his concubine and dying for it.

The first 7 chapters are confusing, partly because of the translation. Just to clarify, Su Yao Niang is from the poor Su family,

but her oldest sister-in-law Zhu hates her. Meanwhile, Yao Niang's own loving sister Su Hui Niang has married into the wealthy Yao family (no relation) and had two sons, so her sister takes Yao Niang to live with the Yao family. Except that the spoiled Miss Yao schemes against Yao Niang out of jealousy, and Yao Niang ends up having a child out of wedlock. The domestic situation worsens, Zhu tries to sell her as a concubine, and Yao Niang can no longer live with any family. To avoid being drowned for losing her virtue, Yao Niang leaves to be a wet nurse at Jin Wang's estate just like in her previous life. Her baby will be raised by her loving sister. But this time she is determined not to become Jin Wang's concubine.

The first 100 chapters are mainly about their romance, the next 100 chapters is more about the imperial princes, and the last 27 chapters are a long happy ending. The story was well done and there are a series of mini-arcs to carry the story through. There are smutty scenes.

The story has a lot of happy endings. Yao Niang had a son before marriage, but it's actually Jin Wang's. Jin Wang's daughter isn't his. Jin Wang only sleeps with Yao Niang. There are many schemes against them, but Jin Wang triumphs against them all. There are multiple transmigrations/rebirth, including their very cute son. The epilogues were really good, especially since it visits the alternate timeline and a cute future timeline.

I've never felt so revolted after reading a novel. This is just inacceptable and abusive unhealthy and tr*shy relationship built on the ML forcing himself on fl, and the latter being a s*upid weakling who doesn't know how to resist or use her brain, or more accurately, maybe she didn't dislike it in the first place and was just in contradiction with herself. I feel like I swallowed a fly and sullied my eyes with this tr*shy story. I only see ab*se and r*pe, weakness and idiocy, I don't see... more>> any love or doting. <<less

Don't go into this story thinking that the reborn individuals know a lot about what happened in their last life or you will be disappointed cause they didn't know much.

GO IN EXPECTING AN AGE GAP!

Don't look for a strong MC. She has her moments but mostly she's timid. And not too bright. She's definitely not my favorite FL, but the fact she tries a bit to change her fate doesn't make her completely useless. Just wish she were smarter!

LOOK FORWARD TO HER BEING BLAMED FOR SOMETHING THAT SHE WAS THE... more>> VICTIM OF! (ANGRY FACE!)

Don't expect the ML to be likeable, but he's not a total d*ck. He's an ancient male which makes him a little cold, but he doesn't sleep with a bunch of women unlike what the FL believed. So don't look at everything on the surface because he's not a total bad guy. His ignorance and inexperience with personal relationships shows, but instead of speaking about it he keeps his mouth shut which can be ANNOYING!

EXPECT THE ML TO BE A LITTLE BIT OLD FASHION.

Don't expect the rebirth of the son to make since. He's too young to actually do anything and he knew very little in his last life. He kind of took away from the story because SERIOUSLY, SHOULDN'T SOME ONE BE MORE SKEPTICAL OF A ONE YEAR OLD THAT SMART?!

EXPECT AWKWARDNESS WHEN THE GROWN MAN IN A BABY'S BODY HAS TO LISTEN TO HIS PARENTS IN "BED".

ngl, I became here looking for smut and an ancient China monogamous couple. Did I get that? Hell yeah. So I'm super satisfied. I'll tell you now, they were loyal from beginning to end, and the romance just escalated more and more.

About the ML, he's a prince and he has been poisoned by an extreme aphrodisiac but, he just doesn't like his concubines or his wife. Homie has it tough when he sees a hot nanny who is our protagonist and the mother of his first kid (he just doesn't... more>> know ittt, and she either). His eunuch helps ML get closer to her because ML really has the hots for her, but she has been reborn and knows that if she climbs his bed it will only cause her trouble. So she just decided to bang him as a side piece which lmao, was so cute because they were like

so they get into this fwb thing and they develop corny feelings which hell was so cute gah.

this novel features:

One thing that I really like about this novel is that the although the MC was born and has a precedented advantage and a greater control over life, you can still feel the insecurity and the followed helplessness warranted by a not-so-supportive family (except the good-natured sister and brother-in-law) which makes it very realistic and honestly really fresh. She feels grieved and the denial is there but eventually she accepts her present circumstances and tries her best to stay level-headed and optimistic. Again, a very realistic approach (unlike some... more>> MC's that are ever so bubbly, no hate but they sometimes seem too caricature-ish) . Overall, I like the premise and look forward to the development and pacing of the story. I really wish for the MC's personality to stay consistent. Of course, there is always some room for character. On a side note, so far the supporting characters and cannon fodders actually do possess a personality and aren't flawed just for the sake of being evil, there are subtle hints dropped here and there that justify the reasoning behind their acts.

A recommended read for all. <<less

This story leaves a sweet taste in my mouth. No major drama and unnecessary misunderstanding. I love how the ML is not cold and ruthless he loves MC wholeheartedly.

Enjoying the read so far but I had to stop for a moment because one the character's line broke my heart.

Consort Jin's situation is such a difficult issue to stomach. Although she wants to lie low and be a hidden dragon, everyone around her advises her to be a villain. Not that she doesn't have her own crazy ideas, but in her mind they're for her pride as the main wife, not so much to be cruel. This alone isn't due to her being spoiled or whatever, but she has... more>> seen the suffering of a main wife bullied by concubines in her own maiden home. The fact that she can't speak to anyone about her orientation is sooooo hard to swallow. She is one of the loneliest characters in all the novels I've read.

I've seen other readers calling the ML names bc of how he ignores his concubines?? Were you hoping this would become a harem novel? He did not marry them at will but they were granted by the Emperor because no one knows that he actually has an heir already. Were you guys expecting him to sleep with them too? Don't forget that if he gives them any kind of respect or leeway, they would think that he is favoring them and scheme. They're all the type to take a mile when given an inch.

The ML doesn't stand out from any other domineering and possessive ML, which is the type that I enjoy so no issues here. There is some very brief smut scattered throughout, and it's rather inconsistent but still tasteful. Before I started reading, I checked the reviews and some of it said there was a lot of smut, which I disagree with... All smut were brief... Maybe just three or five lines at most and it's not often that the author goes into details. Yes, our ML has a fetish, however, it's only act upon with our MC.

There is 1 scene where he was abusive due to being poisoned so if that triggers you, please skip! He could do better to show his Consort some respect but he is a Prince after all.

and let's be fair about this, as much as I feel Sorry for the consort, she jilted him first when she cheated. He was initially excited to marry her. I don't think he is homophobic but rather petty and traumatized from being cheated on. During this era, whenever a woman steps out of her marriage, she is called disgusting amongst other names, which is how he views the consort. I don't think it was her orientation that bothered him as much as her cheating on him.

I have very mixed feelings for the novel. I'll start from the easiest - translation quality is rather average, up until the new translator (chapter 24).

Now for the plot: I have no problems with some elements of the concept. The MC is not very brilliant, has no particular talents but in a way I like it. For once, when she is in a bad situation she cannot save herself with whatever talent (plot convenience) she has - no miraculous medical skills, hidden second ML to the rescue, extraordinary talent to... more>> save her. It makes it more realistic - I can believe that she would be stuck in the same situation as in the first lifetime, because with no particular talents and no background there are no many options for young mother of a new-born without father in the picture. So generally, plot works for me, harem intrigue is a bit much, but I've seen much worse, characters are rather logical.

The main issue I have with the story is the ML. In the story we can easily see that MC is unwilling to get into relationship and, to avoid spoilers, let's just say that I cannot accept the ML's behaviour and I cannot read them ending up together as a happy ending. To be completely honest I empathize more with other women in the harem (despite them also being faaaar from perfect) than with his behaviour. Maybe he becomes better later, maybe his behaviour improves but I'm not sure if I can work through the current chapters. <<less

This may be one of the best ancient themed novel for the ff reasons.

1. The FL really personifies the word ordinary. Sure she’s pretty but not the prettiest one in the novel. Nor is she smart, but did improve along the way. A rebirthee yes. But what she can change or influence was only her outlook in life and nothing of the events that transpired in her past life. I think that in itself makes it more realistic. Though she knew most of the things that happened, she didn’t know... more>> the cause and effect nor know any of in depth machinations. I think the most outrageous thing that happened to her was the chance meeting of sleeping with the ML under the influence with no knowledge afterwards. The flow of the plot on how the ML was attracted to her despite the fact that she was turtling herself makes a lot of sense too. This is ancient times where princes no matter if they look good or not will attract all butterflies and bees. The notion that a fine woman not attracted to him will definitely rouse his interest.

2. The ML wasn’t omnipotent omnipresent powerful man. The story provides hints that he got the results he wanted due to patience and preparation, not just because he was powerful. I admire the fact that during the power struggle, it was shown that although he was also prepared he was nervous as there was a lot of unknown. It gives a great amount of realism to the story.

3. The ‘villains’ are a mix of stereotypes. Like her sister’s sister in-law is a streotypical brainless cannon fodder, along with her sister’s mother-in-law and her first sister in-law zhou somethhing. The story described them as brainless and inherently evil and selfish. While others have self serving reasons. I think having the mix really brings things to perspective as well. As the story is narrated in the perspective of the main leads, it makes sense that some may appear evil to you but that’s just because you have opposing interest and you don’t have the foreknowledge of their logical thinking.

all in all i’m quite satisfied with it though I wish there was more chaps for the after stories. <<less

others already write what I want to. Im gonna (try to) keep this simple. Mtl is easy for me (but might not for u). HE and there is not much misunderstanding between the main couple. I think this is more light hearted story.

Like author's other historical novels, they really knew how to write a realistic one and how people in that era would act. But I love the most that the FL is not super op and there is not much misunderstanding between the main couple.

FL : Not that s*upid... more>> but not that smart either. Even her own husband and son say that she is s*upid lol. She is born as a common people. Her way of thinking might be limited and different from those who was born noble. But hey it's not that bad, she gradually becomes more smarter.

When she became queen, some people said that she is not suitable for the throne. Noble girls are far more intelligent, modest and suitable for the emperor. It's one thing that the FL worried about when the ML discover her cooking food. The ML even said to her :

" you are you, never try to changes yourself ". One of the commenter put the exact sentences.

ML : typical cold and ruthless (maybe overbearing ???) male lead. But there is more than that. He is ruthless to those who (try to) harm him. But he never treat other peoples bad. He loves his family. He cared for his younger brothers and wish the best for them and cared for his father's life. I think the ML is more a quiet type since he don't expressed his feelings outloud.

in the extra, the older ML transmigrated to younger ML (our ML), The O!ML control the body and the Y!ML actually get mad at him for touching his queen lol. Thats the most expressive I've seen the ML shows to us.

And im quite glad that O!ML actually got his own chance for his happy ending. Im so glad he will never get lonely again

The original ML's wife (or official wife), Princess Jin is quite refreshing character for me.

Because she is a lesbian lol. That's it. I think not many author tend to write lesbian characters or relationship in a historical novel with BG couple as main couple.

Princess Jin actually cheated on the ML with a woman and after the ML discover that, he feels disgusted and betrayed. ML actually is not good with women and he does feels excited to married with one of talented and beautiful girl but to find out she likes woman and cheats on him.

Princess Jin also quite pitiful character. Has to hide her loves for a female, her ex lover actually (didnt really remember cause im mtl) betray her and people constantly forcing her to have children with a man. Even her father doesnt really care for her and her mother. Her surrounding make her "evil" at least imo. What she does is unacceptable but hey she's regret it. Her ending finally shows she is in peace and now living together with her mother and adopted child. The best part is she finally told her mother that she likes woman.

Overall, a great novel. I think all the author's historical novels are greats. Main couple loves and life is smooth and they often talked together if there is misunderstanding. <<less

Very Highly Recommended. For me, from the first chapter to the next is good. If you like Transmigration with some twists on the story, some laughs, some fluffs then go ahead.
