She is the legitimate daughter of the Du family who lost her parents at a young age. Her status is noble, yet she is like a floating duckweed in the wind, with a pitiable fate.

Her past karma remains unfinished, and in this lifetime, she returns to the bustling world, leaving behind the past of the mortal realm, seeking only a peaceful and enduring life like a gentle stream flowing endlessly.

But unexpectedly, fate plays tricks, the more she tries to escape, the more she becomes entangled in the mortal world.

In a single encounter, she intruded into his heart, and in the mysterious realm of destiny, their love bond was already fated.

He is the highly esteemed heir to the throne, elegant and noble, yet trapped by his birth father’s schemes, facing difficulties at every step.

Amidst a faint fragrance floating, in a fleeting moment of brilliance, he dares to touch the forbidden, abandoning the prestigious and beautiful branches for the sake of a sincere heart, secretly pledging himself to the beloved.

Love has already blossomed, but the inner demons are hard to quell. The harder it is to attain, the more relentlessly it is pursued.

In a comedic drama, he takes the beauty as his own, experiencing the joys and sorrows of life together, never parting even in old age.

She gives him genuine affection and lends him a helping hand; he offers her devoted love, helping her shed all hostility.

Through all the ups and downs of life, they weather the storms together.

Can holding each other’s hands exchange a lifetime of peace and stability?

There's no denying that this novel is addictive—at least during certain parts in the beginning and middle, particularly the early marriage arc. However, many parts are awfully draggy. The entire subplot about the FL's various prospects and endless betrothal drama was stretched far too long. So many love interests. I almost dropped it, but netizens praised the second half, where the ML and FL get together, so I pushed through. And to be fair, the second half didn't disappoint—once the main couple is established, the story improves noticeably.

Still, the novel... more>> has its flaws. I wasn't a fan of how much attention was given to certain side characters, especially Dou Ming and Wei Tingyu. I really didn't need extended discourses framing them as foils to the FL—it just felt excessive and grating, like buzzing flies that wouldn't go away. Scenes like that dragged the pacing down and made me consider quitting more than once. At times, the story felt like a soap opera (and not in the good way, like My Mother-in-Law Is Reborn [Seventies]).

Character motivations were also confusing. Not the logic itself, which was often sound—but the basic emotional drives that propel the plot felt murky or exaggerated. Is so much melodrama really necessary? Some characters lacked even basic common sense—and not just one or two of them. It felt like a trend. That said, for all its flaws, the novel remained readable—until chapter 415.

(I won't call this a spoiler)

When I got to chapter 415, I just couldn't continue anymore. In that chapter, the FL is startled by a black cat owned by the ML's younger brother when she walks into his wing room. She admits she's afraid—mainly because the cat is black. Absolutely ridiculous. Later, the ML then decides to have the cat sent away. In the same chapter, the FL claims to feel sorry for pets. I can't stress enough how much this bothered me. My own black cat recently went missing, and this scene struck a nerve. I didn't even want to find out how the author might try to spin this as a plot device. The whole attitude of the main characters toward pets left a bad taste in my mouth.

This is the kind of thing I absolutely cannot tolerate. The casual, "so-it-is, " "understandable" way they decide to send the pet away—framing pets as dangerous to children? The FL even suggests it would be better to adopt a white cat or one of a 'better' color. I just cannot express my disdain enough. I honestly don't know whether to call that superstition or racism toward black cats. Also what's wrong with black cats? They're adorable little babies. I was under the impression that in ancient China, people actually took cat adoption quite seriously. The author clearly doesn't understand pets—or the love people have for them. That was my breaking point. I couldn't continue after that. I am petty like that. Note: I want to rate the novel one star for the black cat incident but that would be too personal. But there is no denying that I did enjoy certain parts of the novel. Before chapter 415, I thought the novel deserved 3 stars so that's the rating I finally gave. Also I wonder if the drama adaptation corrected these flaws. <<less

Reader coming through
Pretty good novel, the FL is strong, smart and resolute. A bit more dependant since meeting the ML but their interactions are cute.

One strong point is the background story. The mistery and conspiracy is pretty good and thick. You want to know who the guilty ones. Still don't at this point.

But one point I don't like about the FL personnality is her relationship with some characters.

Spoiler

especially some pseudo villains. You see it's her second life so she has a guideline to some good or bad people but she also doesn't try to change it. So indifferent and maybe a bit selfish.

Two characters: Dou Ming and Song Han.

The first one, she seems to become a bad apple because of others' influence (mother, mother's family, peaple's disdain). Our FL says herself that she won't care if she's (Dou Ming) not trying to trick her. But how can Dou Ming not take the same path as the past life if nothing or no one change her fate? If you're rational, she is not in a better situation than the FL. Daughter of a concubine, a narrowed-character mother without power who destroys her completely. Our FL was a mother herself and not a really good one as she said. She know what a bad parenting do but don't try to save her own sister because of the act she did in another life. I feel she should have given her a chance by truly educating and loving her. If she still become a villain then nothing can be done (but at last she tried).

The second one is pitiful. He was killed by Song Mo in his past life so she feels he might be a villain and can't get close to him. Well maybe he will but once again she has no proof. At this moment we got a child (about 12-14) who lost his mother, watch her brother/father at each other throat, became ab*sed by his own father while everybody knows but nobody acts especially this brother he deeply admires. Do you smell the begining of hatred and tragedy? Because I do. And we must say that our FL and Song Mo are both powerful and the father a paper tiger so why don't they tries to act? Both knows that the father will do everything but making the little brother a good person (using to kill Song Mo would be more probable) so why not act? They can watch a child being isolated and ab*sed without doing any thing because it's "not the time yet". Well been dozen of chapters and still nothing...

He could have sent him to school or taking him with him or using the Emperor, Queen or anybody powerful enough to take his brother back (on the ground he ab*ses him) but no. And after he says he loves him. Seems more like a pet treatment.

Another one is her ex-husband. She doesn't want to marry him good but she treats him like a complete stranger. She says once that she knew he could have a career if he goes in which direction but she don't tell him because she's not his wife anymore. Ok, but can't you help him indirectly?

Her cousin Zhao, she wants to help her find a marriage but never actively look for potential family. She feels her servant should be married but for like dozen chapters nothing happen, don't even ask if they have someone... And most of the time it's either because she's too busy or because she feels its a bother?

She helps but few people, relucantly and in the smallest way possible.

[collapse]

So for me the FL is kind of heartless and paranoiac. I don't like her very much compare to other FLs. It's my taste and also my interpretation it's just that she was a mother who felt she acted the wrong way with her own loved ones but after coming back apart for her own self-hapiness she doesn't try to interact better with her relationships, but deals with them in a worst way than before. <<less

Really one of the better rebirth stories out there and fair warning, it includes a lot of tragedy and brutal scenes. One reviewer thinks the FL is selfish and cold and honestly, she is, but there are valid reasons for being that way. The big one is Song Han who is supposed to be the Male leads younger brother who was killed by the ML in the FL's past life. Well the ML had very very valid reasons for killing him mostly because Song Han participated in the poisoning of... more>> the Ml's bio mother and eventually it's revealed that he was illegitimate and had been switched with the ML's full sister at birth. So, the ML's father actually brought his bastard son to replace his daughter while the mistress raised the bio daughter in a mentally, physically, and sexually abusive environment. And guess what? Song Han knew that he wasn't the ML's full blood brother and even connived with his mistress mother So, yes, he deserved to die a thousand deaths.

Anyway, I'm about to watch the drama and I really hope it stays true to the book. <<less

Nine-layered flower / Jiu Chong Zi/ Blossom

A brutal rebirth fix it filled with detailed life of the Dou and the Song family. I found the first 50 chapter so slow, I was doubting who will be the male lead. The female lead, Dou Zhou in the novel is far more vicious, vindictive and burdened by her past life. She is determined and knows the limits of her omniscience. The male lead is on par with her and has a cognizance that stands out. I liked Ji Song, the cousin of... more>> Dou Zhou as well. The novel goes into minute details about the the family members. I liked the couple's interaction. My one nitpicking is regarding the ending. It felt a bit too open ended and I wish there was epilogue (or wish I found any chapters, if there are). I have started binge watching the drama as well. <<less

In Jiu Chong Zi (Nine Layered Purple / Nine Fold Purple / Deep Purple / Blossom), Dou Zhao finds herself regretful on her death bed of the way that her life has turned out. Given the chance to relive it all and makes changes, she encounters Song Mo, who was a frightful figure in her past life though they did not know each other personally. However, in this new life, fate has intertwined the two. Can Dou Zhao avoid becoming entangled in Song Mo's future? Or will she find what... more>> she's been missing in him?

As someone who watched Blossom first, the differences between the book and the show are wide, but I think that that just makes it a better read. There were a ton of liberties taken for the film adaptation, but it enhances the story while also making sense for turning a 523 chapter novel into a 34 episode show.

My only issue was really how young everybody was. Dou Zhao and Song Mo are almost too capable for their ages, but it's not too much of a surprise in-text. Also I didn't like that Dou Zhao rebirth was a whole mystical thing in the show (and Song Mo and Ji Jianming are actively in it with her), but she tells not one soul in the book. It's a solitary experience, and pretty much the ONLY fantastical thing about the story.

Ultimately I enjoyed it, and will probably go and read this author's other books.

If you like Rebirth, Marriage of Convenience, and capable young people, this one is for you. <<less
