Luger was in a funk. He’d been shedding a bit lately. But that didn’t matter. The gates to the supernatural world were opening wide for him. He was going to become a powerful wizard—and then cover himself in scales, just like that annoying, terrifying twenty-eight-legged burrowing wyrm.

In his spare time, he often dreamed of no longer having a dog’s head and face, but becoming that fresh, clean human again. Sometimes he even imagined that from his balding forehead, a pair of long, twisted, curved horns—just like the ones belonging to high-ranking demonkin—would sprout. But that wasn’t any easier than growing scales.

Those legendary dragons and powerful demonkin were said to have a natural human form upon reaching adulthood. Yes, an enormous roundabout journey, all just to become human again—to leave behind the stinky, constantly shedding kobold shell.

At least at first, that’s what he believed.
