Your ex-boyfriend is a bit of an eyesore.

Rong Ke’s top celebrity boyfriend made a public announcement about his relationship with someone else.
As he was about to reject the man handing him a business card, he learned of this news.
He crushed his cigarette and glanced at the card—it was from the top fashion magazine in the industry.
Rong Ke took the card, his tone lazy and casual: “How do you want to shoot?”

Yan Zhi had always thought Rong Ke was a conservative person, but on the day of the shoot, Rong Ke was much bolder than he had imagined.
He attributed this to Rong Ke’s professionalism as an actor, until he accidentally witnessed Rong Ke’s breakup with his boyfriend. Only then did he realize Rong Ke’s behavior was out of the ordinary.
Seeing Rong Ke being scolded yet too lazy to refute, Yan Zhi “kindly” stepped in to support him, “You were amazing last night.”
—Referring to the shoot.
The boyfriend gaped at the two of them, and Rong Ke knew Yan Zhi had nothing better to do and couldn’t be bothered to clarify, “It’s because you guided me well.”

Having lived a mediocre life, Rong Ke never expected he would one day become a hot trending topic, even overshadowing the promotion of his ex-boyfriend’s new drama.
Everyone was curious: Who is this person, and why is Yan Zhi praising him so much?

Yan Zhi × Rong Ke

My NY wish is that people will stop using top/bottom as descriptors and character traits outside of s*x. Like you don't "look" or behave like a bottom/top, you're just a different flavour of a man that gets categorised into those two drawers based on heteronormativity and sexism. Your s*xual preferences are only important to your (potential) partner, your mother doesn't need to know, nor does the rest of the world.

Long story short, ML decides to lie about his s*xual preferences to get in the pants of MC. The rest of... more>> the world (including his mother!) is very "but ML is such a toppy top!", which 1) gross, why are you so interested in someone's s*x life, and 2) completely, utterly s*upid and based on stereotypes.

I had high hopes because MC believed ML's words - I don't condone ML's lies, don't get me wrong. As of chapter 36,
Spoiler

the lie is potentially out, after one of his friends hits him with "you don't truly believe he's a bottom?", but MC still has doubts whether to believe his partner or an unrelated person who has only seen him once and didn't really talk with him. Of course, it seems the unrelated person's opinion might hold more vaildity.

[collapse]
Will MC be reasonable in his further assumptions of ML's preferences? I doubt it. Will ML stop being a creepy lying ass? Maybe in a few chapters he will turn into just a creep.

Not fully related to the whole bottom/top thing, the villains are, of course, s*upid, evil and uninteresting. Nothing seems to happen that isn't somehow related to MC and ML, which in itself is fine at times, but the side characters are mega boring and exist solely to push forward the narrative - the narrative here being the toppy top being an "obvious top". It's painful to read and I don't see anything turning getting better. Reading about two characters who are open about their s*xual preferences was kinda fun at times (albeit one being a lying toppy top the topest of them all and how can you not see from his super dominant lazy prince demeanor that he doesn't like it up his ass), shame it's so jumbled up in heteronormativity and at best mediocre writing. NU girlies will still probably give it 5* just for being a BL. 2, 5/5 for me tho. <<less

This novel made me laugh so hard I had literal tears coming out of my eyes. Definitely my favorite novel of this author so far, up there with Restricted Area! The romance in this is surprisingly very emotionally mature, with characters that actually respect and treat one another with sincerity. Not to mention how I spent the majority of reading this in constant full bodied laughter - don't read in public unless you want to look crazy lol

I really didn't think I would love the characters this much, but the... more>> end made me cry with how beautiful the relationship was between the main couple. Like actual tears streaming down my face - for a novel that is fully humor and dramatics I have no idea why the ending hit me that hard still lol?? Either way, I've definitely found another example of the love that I want in my own life. That said, this is not a novel to be taken too seriously, as it's primarily comedic.

MC has a hilarious misunderstanding at the start that ML is also a bottom, and the pacing of the reveal is pretty much perfect to maximize hilarity without drawing out the misunderstanding too long. Though they get into a few arguments due to ML hiding things, they have this way of making up that feels realistic and also hilarious in the process. Both have a drama queen streak to them, but they have such respect for each other at the same time, making their arguments just fun to read rather than frustrating.

MC in particular I found to be so refreshing in how he would never badmouth ML in front of others, and would never show their relationship issues in public. He would always hide his anger around those not involved and then confront ML in private, never using cruel words or unreasonable actions to express his anger. I'm so used to MCs in danmei being almost abusive either verbally or even physically when they're upset, that it's really nice to have a MC that actually respects his lover and can deal with his emotions maturely. For example, when MC is mad at ML and goes out drinking with a friend:

Spoiler

Rong Ke didn't want to complain to Zhou Lin about Yan Zhi's pretense. Firstly, it would make him look s*upid, and secondly, he didn't want to say bad things about Yan Zhi in public.

—No matter what, Yan Zhi was still special to him, even if he was a black-hearted bastard.

[collapse]

ML is pretty much my ideal ML- he's respectful, playful, creative, surprisingly actually really intelligent, confident, and also just so hilariously weird. He has the most shameless personality, and isn't afraid to embarrass himself for MC (which honestly makes it even better how MC never puts him in a position to be embarrassed - ML does it all to himself lol). He puts his all into his passions, and he can be a bit ridiculous and impulsive, but he's also so lovably sincere with his words and affection.

My favorite comedic bits:
Spoiler

I will never get over how ML gave all their s*x toys Western sounding names... peak comedy when they're arguing and then suddenly MC pulls "Jessie" out, their plush handcuffs...

Please read this novel I swear you will have the best time of your life.

[collapse]

There's explicit scenes but they're not anything too detailed. Still, we love to see any descriptions when the norm is fully censored! The plot moved quickly and there wasn't a single dull moment, what with ML's lively antics spicing up the slice of life moments. While I do wish there were more, the ending did wrap their love story up perfectly and it definitely felt complete. Rong Ke and Yan Zi, it's a bit unreal how much I love the two of you. <<less

I'm not rating because I've decided to drop it.

I quite like the MC. He's this nice balance of intelligent and true to himself, but also only uses his mental energy to pay attention to acting and otherwise either goes with the flow (not always with great results) or completely ignores things. I like that he's not too stereotypically one thing or another.

The ML had potential to be a rare interesting ML with an actual personality, but unfortunately he's become increasingly obnoxious to me as the story has progressed. I'm really... more>> uncomfortable with so much of how he's approaching this relationship, had hoped that it would improve after he'd apologised for his deceit and manipulation. Instead, he's become more shameless and forceful because he can now be his true "gong pursuing his shou" self. It's unpleasant that he makes the MC uncomfortable but you can see that in the end the MC (and reader) is supposed to find it romantic or endearing or whatever. Many people will, I'm just not here for it. I don't want him aggressively kissing him in a potentially public place and making the MC weak at the knees while he's still supposed to making up for deceiving and manipulating the MC. And other things. Originally, it was a bit funny to have an ML who would do or say random rogue things and not care about the consequences. Now that it's being used for the main romance, it's no longer an enjoyable quirk and instead feels entitled and disrespectful.

It might get better, but I just don't like this ML enough to find out.

...

And, of course, the whole rigid shou/gong thing is something I put up with but have never enjoyed in these stories, so to make so much of the early plot revolve around such ridiculous stereotypes was already pushing my limits.

I'm sad about this because it had potential for an interesting and balanced couple with a lovely organic relationship if the author hadn't chosen to include this shou/gong deception plot. <<less

I don't know if I can recommend this one. Might have been one of the messiest reads I've had recently.

It's difficult to characterize our main characters. The MC is... stubborn, perhaps naive?, somewhat dense, jaded, and low on emotional amplitude. Our ML is much more of an artistic free spirit, very flamboyant but also very capable. There's a lot of random sh*t going on in this story, and it feels like the MC is just going along with the flow a lot, which I guess is the meaning of the... more>> title "Inertia". At the start he already expressed dissatisfaction about his relationship with the ex, but he never took the initiative to break it off. It was only after he saw the explicit evidence of cheating online that he finally decided to break it off, and even later when the ex came to bother him he wouldn't really do anything harsh to cut him off. The villains really felt like a bunch of c*ckroaches. The author claims that it was bc he didn't want to breach the confidentiality contract so that's why he let them jump around, but it's pretty frustrating to see.

The relationship between the MC and ML is also somewhat questionable. Our MC is somehow convinced at the beginning that the ML is a bottom despite the ML's figure explicitly being said to dwarf his previous ex and the ML's large weaponry. Even though it was obvious to other people who barely knew the ML that the ML was a top. The whole mental gymnastics of this were wild, and the ML going along with it to enjoy the perks of the MC walking around almost nude didn't help things lol. Other drama ensues later but overall their relationship doesn't seem very friendly, and the MC is often going against him for various reasons of varying validity. The levels of communication between the couple are not ideal, so misunderstandings and issues are common. Felt like the ML was the one being bullied most of the time at home, though I do appreciate the MC's attitude of defending the ML at all costs to outsiders.

Overall a very messy story with Schrodinger's level of happiness in our main couple's relationship, our ML's mom being spontaneous af while her man indulges her every whim, a side couple with a love hate relationship, and the chaos between the villains and their respective gold backers. Do not read for fluff. <<less

I've only read the starting chapters but this looks reallyyy awesome!!..

i really loved our MC, he is rather indifferent, but is sensitive, he is quite but he speaks up when its matters, he is self aware and hard working in his own way!..

and the ML, he is promising, he is good at teasing and talking~ and SURELY a green flag!.. And he respect others, well he is bit arrogant but someone as good as him in many ways have every right to be a bit arrogant 🤭 and I'm currently... more>> waiting for him to fall in love with our MC and face how 'The seasoning (love) he thought which was not necessary in life would become his top necessity 🤣

oh and there's probably no need to mention MC's ex lover.. He isn't worth mentioning. <<less

Overall, it's good. The story is well written, the characters are interesting. It's not terribly deep - there's a decent balance between minor difficulties and happy fluffy moments without it swinging too far either way.

Seconding what another commenter said: the whole bottom-top tropey stereotype is annoying. It's nothing out of the ordinary for these types of novels, but it takes up way more space than usual. There's a whole 10 chapters (at least) that are only about this and how it completely defines their relationship and interactions.

I thought it was a very funny and wholesome entertainment novel.

There was definitely the top/bottom part that took up a way bigger plot point than I ever imagined... and agree with other reviewers that top/bottom tropes are super massively annoying and heteronormative lens to view gay relationships, however, I've learned to lower my expectations of CN novels...

Otherwise, I greatly enjoyed the novel, especially the refreshing take on

nationalism as a characteristic (in terms of foreign vs. domestic brands) as well as the way the author wrote the ML's individualism or "Western upbringing" as contrast to your typical CN ML, aka: the ML being born abroad and despite being seen as "an heir" to some kind of mega-conglomerate, he truly simply goes for jobs that are his passion without the "inheritance burden" that typically come packaged with "your regular CN mega-corporate-heir infighting nonsense" heavily present in other CN MLs.

Also the cute aside at the end of the story where the ML truly did spend all his money to buy an island for the MC and he's not just a randomly mega-rich-heir with infinite money.

Fixation on ‘top’ & ‘bottom’ positions aside, it was so freaking funny. I thought it was fine, it wasn’t like the old school manga yaoi tropes of a soft, weak, helpless bottom saved by the domineering top. I wouldn’t profess to understand the psyche of a gay person viewing a potential partner, but the notion of having a preference of taking vs. Giving makes sense to me. It wasn’t as if they didn’t find each other attractive, it was just not perceived as a right fit.

The wiring of ML’s brain... more>> circuits is unpredictable, resulting in unexpected hilarity. I laughed so much and cackled crazily to myself because of it. Yes, he is quite domineering, and it continues, even with some growth in the later parts. But MC is the pushover type in relationships so actually I felt they complemented each other perfectly. MC also has principles—in life and his career, which I like and respect.

The few bits of smut was hot, the tension build up before they got together was ooh yeah baby and the face slapping was eh, alright.

I do wish the script plots & photoshoot concepts were deeper, but I might be spoilt by some other entertainment novels that go into detail on these. Sorry but

Spoiler

I cannot take what sounds like a pretty lame supernatural kids power drama series becoming so popular and influential seriously.

[collapse]

Lighthearted and comedic, with great s*xual tension. A fun reread for sure. <<less
