IT Genius x Popular Idol

Li Xuan thought soul-swapping was the most ridiculous thing he’d ever experienced—until he found out that the person he swapped bodies with was someone constantly on the edge of su*cide.

**First Day of Meeting**

Li Xuan: “You’re a popular celebrity with everything you could want; why would you even consider this?”

Sheng Min: “Being rich and good-looking isn’t my fault. If I want to die, I’ll die. You’re an orphan with a ton of problems; why not die with me?”

Li Xuan: “Shut up!… Just hold on until we swap back. Then you can die however you want, and I’ll take care of your funeral.”

**After Finally Swapping Back**

Sheng Min: “I’m ready to die. When’s a good time for you to handle the aftermath?”

Li Xuan: “How about holding on just a little longer?”

Sheng Min: “Why?”

Li Xuan: “For me.”

“I came with nothing, and I planned to leave empty-handed, but you stopped me and handed me a star.”

A story of soul-swapping and mutual salvation—a light-hearted, sweet romance.

Li Xuan x Sheng Min

This story triggered my anxiety, like literally (I had to take brakes to calm myself between chapters). At least that means that I was thoroughly invested right??? In all seriousness though I really really liked this story, like really liked it. As a formerly depressed person (who according to my therapist is actually still depressed but in denial) I felt soo deeply for our dearest male lead. The plot of the story itself is oh so unrealistic that I sometimes laughed out loud at the obsurdity but that was fine... more>> as the characters where all so real. They all felt very human, they had both positives and negatives, neither half of our main CP being perfect at any point in the story which I like. I mean they're both so young and most real people take years and years but still haven't figured it all out. Once again I like the CHARACTER realism

Spoiler

At the end both still working on themselves which some people aren't a fan of ig, personally I prefer that neither are fully okay but both are working towards being okay, once again big fan of the realism. I also apricated the fact MLs depression and suicidal intentions didn't just go away and remained a thing, too many stories only remember a characters metal state when it can progress the plot. Random side note as much as both have grown in each others presence and found salvation of sorts in eachother I do not think their relationship is healthy. Maybe due to the way both were raised both are vey extreme, their codependency is almost (Not just almost) concerning. I love them both and I'm 100% team them dying together but yeah... definitely not a model relationship. Maybe in the future this will be a lesser problem (I doubt but who knows)

[collapse]

Considering how deeply this affected me and how distraught I was reading this gets a 5 as not many stories can do that to me. <<less

Okay, I don’t think I ever wrote a review on this site despite reading so much but this danmei is an exception! It’s practically unknown for international fans but it’s really good so far! As you can tell from the desc, this is a body swapping love story where the two characters learn about the other through interactions with acquaintances. This is definitely not a “very simple sweet story” like what the author claims in the beginning though.

One is a very smart and “will not take something lying down” sort... more>> of person; whereas the other is gentle but does not have much will to live. Despite being quite different personality-wise, their commonality is the fact that they both tend to keep problems to themselves. However, being in each other’s bodies allows them to really learn and be involved in the other’s life. I am interested in their dynamic and how they will navigate their relationship in future chapters. Would still high recommend this despite only knowing half of the story hehe.

Will update review once I finish! <<less

This was actually quite nice. I wasn't expecting anything at first since its fairly new, but I read all 60 translated chapters in one gooo, I just like it very muchh. I wont say much since im not good with that, so I'll only say what I feel for now 😭

Beware tho, depression and su*cidal attempts, on the first few chappies and angst throughout... And the author said that this novel was supposed to be short, lighthearted, and fun lolololol

The soul-switch trope isn't played for comedy. The MC & ML were given a hard start to life, and both have reached the turning point. One is determined to fight through whatever the cost, the other has been forced to swallow too many costs, and has thrown in the towel. This is cleverly written, and I'm invested in the outcome of this slow burn love story.

It's a slow burn but fluffy story. ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 The romance is slow, but the back stories btwn ML and MC made it worth it at the end. You get both POV so everything just makes sense.

Can't wait for the story to be translated till the end.

This was one of those stories where the relationship progression was gradual and smooth and delightful to read. The main characters are interesting, and their dynamic, although at first seemed contrasting, with one more stronger than the other, in the end showed itself to be complementary.

For me, the hard part, both to read and get through, were the antagonists. Shen Min’s scenes with his mom and brother always broke my heart and Li Xuan’s relationship with his adoptive parents, and his old orphanage colleage went from irritating to gut renching.... more>> And don’t get me started on Shen Min’s company. By the middle I just wanted to see this couple I had fallen in love with be happy, and it was aggravating that I had to read 70 plus chapters to see that.

But the read was worth it and I’m so grateful for the writer for creating this story and for the translator for choosing this work and showing it to a wider audience.

I really recommend this. It will not be easy and I recommend you pick a moment where you are in a good place emotionally, but it really is worth the time and emotional investment. <<less

Emotional and gripping.

Nothing like the lighthearted tone of the summary, nor the ‘simple, sweet story’ that was in the A/N early on, but still a satisfying HE with all the loose ends tied up. ‘IT genius x popular idol’ is really creating the impression of a whole other kind of novel, lol.

With the suicidal mention, I expected it to have some emotional ups and downs going in, but it was mostly ‘down’ feeling throughout with an underlying tension that creates a sense of unrest while reading the novel. With that,... more>> the ups felt like temporary reprieves before it was sure for sh*t to hit the fan again.

It starts off with a hard headed self-assured MC gong taking over the body of a pushover too gentle and kind ML shou, finally helping the ML regain some control of his life. Along the way, in a depressing state of both having super shitty past histories, they inevitably grow and lean on each other, naturally developing romantic feelings.

You can tell that their characters are carefully crafted, with the author putting in a lot of effort into developing a very rich backstory that’s intricately woven. I enjoyed the gradual reveal of their pasts and seeing/realizing the impact of how it shaped who they became, as well as seeing their own individual character growths after meeting each other and after overcoming each tribulation.

MC LX is really amazing. Putting aside his OP coding/writing abilities, he’s a great balance of hard and soft that’s really so attractive in a character. His drive to live—and live well is such a force of nature. Special shoutout to his relationship with best bud QBY; their interactions are always borderline worrisome but it somehow funnily clicks. The thing I liked most about MC was his unapparent softness. The two of them are a really great fit for each other.

The villains are really irritating. But in a good kind of way that makes their actions and the subsequent consequences have meaning. The face slapping parts... honestly feels like punching cotton, most of the time. It’s generally resolved in a realistic manner, not like a OP smash your face into the ground way. You’re kinda left wanting to metaphorically torture them more but that’s just the way it is.

Why this novel is just shy of a gem (almost favourite!) for me is: although the gritty past is very beautifully woven, it felt distant for my, could I say, sheltered blessed self. With some very extreme actions like
Spoiler

attempted mu*der, sending thugs to beat up minor villains without any repercussions thanks to a fortuitous past connection

it intensified the feeling of ‘yes, this is a story’, which detracted from the very human emotions of disgust, frustration, desperation, disappointment, relief, and (mild lol) happiness that were evoked all the way throughout. Although they were necessary to paint the picture of the ugliness of some humans, it left me with more of a ‘this is a story’ than a ‘this is life’ feeling that I almost reached. If a novel is going to leave me feeling bittersweet, I wish it could also evoke a retrospective view on life.

Maybe I’m asking too much, haha. Or maybe I’m just upset that there wasn’t more pure healing fluff at the end without anything hanging over their heads. Anyway, I did still enjoy it! Might read Four O Clock Flower or Tattoo over this though, if I’m looking for something similar emotionally. <<less

ZJZ the most because he genuinely felt like a roach that wouldn't leave which was scary on so many different levels. LMG was also annoying that borderline on insanity but at the very end, can't help but feel karma had taken it's bite out of him. SM's hateful mother and brother were very annoying as well, lucky they exited earlier.

Overall, I love the perseverance of the characters and how they got that hard earned HEA in the end. <<less

Speechless. I have no words to describe how amazing, wonderfully written this novel is. First of all, this is a mutual salvation type of story so expect lots of emotional conflicts. The characters feel very much alive and you can feel their emotions outside of the screen. I thought this would be a cute sweet story but boy do my emotions feel like riding a rollercoaster. Honestly though, there were lots of sweet moments (but not enough!!) and I wouldn’t say its plot heavy, but its definitely not a mindless... more>> fluff and has a lot of conflicts with twisted characters.

Both characters are deeply in love with each other so no need to worry about their relationship. The gong is somewhat a lunatic, badass and selfish while the shou is kindhearted and selfless. Both have completely different personalities that compliment each other.

Both Gong and Shou are the main character of their own story, as they have pretty much similar screen time. If you’re looking for completely smitten, head over heels protagonists then yes this is the one. I feel like both of them are crazy and full of flaws, thats why they feel so alive. You will feel irritated by both characters at different times and their journey are definitely not smooth sailing. Sometimes I wonder if they would even make past this hurdle. It’s so satisfying to read because it gets so heated that even my heart is beating faster.

I highly, strongly recommend reading this masterpiece and think you would regret if you missed out on this. <<less

Keeping my review short and sweet: great translation, good plot, HE.

BUT: summary lied.

"A story of soul-swapping and mutual salvation—a light-hearted, sweet romance."

  • Soul-swapping and mutual salvation is very much accurate.
  • A light-hearted, sweet romance is an atrocious lie, where is the light-hearted vibe?! I'm 90% sure my definition of light-hearted is the common definition among readers, a cheerful and carefree story. NOPE. I was given a dramatic story with tragic characters, almost like the author completely forgot about the story summary and tried to make the characters as sob-worthy as possible.
Overall: good... more>> story but beware, plot is NOT lighthearted and more bittersweet than anticipated. <<less

By no means this is a light-hearted novel. The plot, especially at the latter parts, are so tense and heavy that it doesn't seem to be a romance novel at all. Every person in this book needed therapy. And I genuinely feel that this novel deserve more tags under it just to avoid certain triggers.

I do believe that the novel itself is wonderfully written despite the degree of emotional ups and downs it gave me. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. It's like a contest of 'who has the... more>> bigger baggage between us that would make our actions justifiable'. At some point, I was not liking Li Xuan. We can't deny the fact that he was also borderline crazy and I do understand that his personality was the manifestation of the circumstances he'd been through. Their love felt bittersweet (for me). Complete opposites in both ideals and beliefs but fated to heal each other. I guess that is the whole premise of this book, they are each others salvation. I can't deny their interactions with each other though, it was cute and full of sugar despite the depressing undertone.

I just feel like it was not an easy read but at the same time it flowed easily like running water. <<less

Usually, even if a story has a darker and more depressing undertone, there will still be moments of happiness and joy because, well otherwise what point is there?

(Unless it's a tragedy I guess which this isn't)

This novel unfortunately doesn't have that. I read up to chapter 66 which I then marked to note that even at this point, I hadn't read one remotely positive thing that happened.

The two main characters are both miserable and there's definitely a reason for that and I don't even mind reading about it... more>> for 66 chapters + but I got tired of not having even 1 moment of slight joy to break up the monotony of them constantly stressing due to their families.

I'm not exaggerating, they're both so stressed and constantly facing one thing challenge or another than I genuinely couldn't really see the chemistry between them. Like, they help each other and speak up for each other but it felt more like - "wow you've had a difficult life, I feel sympathy for you" - than - "I like you".

Even when they get together and I'm excited for the characters to experience a moment of happiness maybe, it lasts like a chapter or not even that. Even when they call each other over the phone, you just KNOW that its because something is wrong.

And I got tired of constantly knowing that no matter what, something bad is going to happen at every moment.

I've read difficult and depressing stuff before but this just got boring and I really couldn't feel the love or interest between the 2 characters.

Towards the end (of my reading) one of the main characters, invites a very toxic character into his life. I guess he feels like he owes him? But he helps out this guy a lot and this guy basically repays him by threatening/emotionally blackmailing him.

So the main character goes, "huh, this guy is unstable and would be dangerous to keep around and I really don't owe him anything anymore because I gave him money, helped him get a job etc....

...... so in conclusion I guess I'll keep him around."

Like what???? At this point its like the characters have decided that they don't have ENOUGH problems to deal with. I stopped reading at this point but I'd bet you anything that the toxic guy would create problems for both main characters and their relationship.

Which could've been easily avoided.

Sometimes characters have tragic backgrounds and stories, and sometimes it feels like the author is wondering what else they can cram in to make the reader feel emotional and in this case, I think it leans a tiny bit into the latter.

Anyway the beginning was interesting and then everything went downhill for me.

The translation is great btw, props to the translator. I just didn't like the story.

Clearly other people have a different option as stated in the other reviews, which is fine. But if anyone one else feels the same as me then they'd probably be just as puzzled as I was at all the other glowing reviews. <<less
