Qian Hui was a little zombie.

He was an NPC zombie in the game “Plant Courtyard,” whose daily routine involved venturing out at fixed times to munch on sunflowers and nuts. When his health bar dipped critically low, he’d promptly collapse and play dead.

During his off-hours, Qian Hui was on friendly terms with the plants.

Peas would lay cabbage leaves for his bed, a little mushroom kept him company at night, a carrot drove away other zombies that tried to bully him, and a man-eating flower shared its captured prey with him.

Qian Hui even had a boyfriend—a human who lived in a secluded forest cabin, making regular meetings difficult.

Despite this, his boyfriend treated him well. He’d cook delicious soups for Qian Hui, teach him to speak and write, and gently kiss his cheek.

Qian Hui spent each day happily, without a single worry.

Then one day, he suddenly transmigrated into a book.

Qian Hui became a little zombie in a post-apocalyptic novel. When he opened his eyes, he witnessed a fierce battle between zombies and mutated plants.

A massive man-eating flower loomed overhead like a dark cloud, devouring seven or eight mid-level zombies in a single gulp as it swept across the battlefield with unstoppable force.

Qian Hui: ! (◎_◎;) Isn’t this the little purple flower from the game? How did it grow so big?

At the same time, a mechanical voice echoed in Qian Hui’s mind:

[Ding—You have bound the Plant Encyclopedia System.]

[The apocalypse has arrived! The war between super-powered humans, the enigmatic Zombie King, and the berserk mutated plants is about to erupt! Please enjoy the game to the fullest!]

***

This was the sixth year of the apocalypse.

Recently, the Black Spine Mountain Base had noticed some peculiarities.

For instance, the number of high-level zombies lurking around had begun to decrease.

The once violent and mutated plants suddenly became docile and calm.

Later, the base received a confession letter written in clumsy, crooked handwriting, addressed to the base’s leader.

The leader, Nan Tingjin, was the base’s highest authority—a decisive and cold-blooded SSS-class ability user known as the “Cruel Blade.” Sending him a love letter was akin to seeking death.

The letter was dismissed as a prank.

But the next day, a large pepper with a hooked tail snuck into the base and kidnapped the leader!

Qian Hui: This is my boyfriend! (‘’ヘ‘’)

It's surprisingly pretty good? MTL'd the whole thing cause I'm impatient for updates and while the plot seemed confusing and maybe even a little random at first, it was all explained near the end.

The story also focuses more on the conflicts and stuff

Spoiler

By conflicts, it focuses more on the fights between the plants and the zombies and also the drama with the human bases, usual stuff

[collapse]

The romance is there, somewhat?

Spoiler

Since the focus is mainly on the plants, the romance stuff kinda just felt like crumbs sprinkled throughout the novel for me. Both the MC and ML felt kinda flat to me in terms of personality and even the character development, but maybe it's just me idk, or maybe it might be the fault of mtl too cause some stuff doesn't translate as well? I found myself asking a lot in my head wth is the ML even doing or where the ML went cause he's like, barely there at times. Personal opinion lol, but the plants to me feels more fleshed out in terms of personalities and they each also have their own character development, the plants are all cute y'all

[collapse]

Pretty good novel to read (as plain as the whole plot might be to most) if you're looking for something to pass the time with and something easier and lighter to read cause I personally am taking refuge after all the dogblood novels I've read <<less

If you've ever wanted to see Plants vs Zombies combined with Pokémon, you need look no further!

Translation is good, easy to read! So kudos to the translator.

I mtl'ed the novel after reading through the initial chapters, and so far, it is essentially a Pokemon journey set in an apocalypse world and without the tournament fighting between pokemons. Qian Hui goes around bonding with many adorable little plants and we see their interactions with him and each other. Super cute, and very laid back, 90% of the time.

However, despite the overall... more>> fluff feeling, the overarching plot is pretty interesting and looks quite deep. There are a few mysteries that have yet to be covered, especially centering on Qian Hui's identity.

There are essentially 3 time periods in the novel: the present/after apocalypse, the time in the game garden, the time before the garden.

Spoiler

The novel starts with Qian Hui in the game garden mentioned in the synopsis, we meet Qian Hui, the plants that he takes care of, and his boyfriend, Nan Ting Jin. We also learn that he regularly has to get rid of other non-sentient zombies, and that his boyfriend doesn't really get along with the plants. The plants don't approach his boyfriend and his boyfriend doesn't approach the plants.

Before we can learn any more, Qian Hui is essentially zapped to "another" world. It turns out this is the world 6 years after the apocalypse, zombies wreak havoc everywhere, humans have gained superpowers, and plants have mutated into sentient, dangerous beings. Qian Hui runs into one of the plants that he was taking care of right off the bat, and he quickly awakens the Plant Encyclopedia System. It is very reminiscent of Pokemon in this aspect.

Qian Hui soon after also runs into his "boyfriend", who is now the super powerful leader of a human base. At this point, it seems very simple, he essentially reunites with his boyfriend and collects plants, trying especially to find the plants that he took care of in the game garden.

But there are still a lot of weird things about the situation. Qian Hui also begins experiencing flashbacks to times before the game garden, when he was a regular human being.

I have yet to finish the novel, so I don't know more than the above, but given that this novel has a 9.5 rating on jjwxc, I'm hoping it will be well executed.

There is romance but so far, it's at a bit of a confusing point.

Spoiler

Like I wrote above and in the summary, it's mentioned that Qian Hui has a boyfriend, Nan Ting Jin. But after he teleports to this new world and meets his boyfriend again, his boyfriend seems to have lost all his memories! It's okay, though, because Qian Hui soothes him with the power of love and their relationship seems back on track.

But wait! It seems like there's something wrong with Qian Hui's memory? He seems to have had amnesia before, and is only just regaining some of his memories. And in these memories, he doesn't have a boyfriend!

Nan Ting Jin is just a guy who keeps pursuing him! And then a memory shows up that seemingly shows that Nan Ting Jin was the one who lied and told him, he was Qian Hui's boyfriend.

Are you confused yet? Because I sure am!

[collapse]

So far, it's been enjoyable laid back fun, with relatively low angst. Might change this review later after I finish the novel, but it seems like a pretty fun and easy novel up to this point. <<less
