Life as a Love Interest in an Obsessive Romance Novel

Community Director Zhuang Baihua transmigrated into a tropey romance novel where the protagonist got entangled with five possessive male leads and the cannon fodder cast were all abnormal. Zhuang Baihua was now one of the five love interests—the legendary “domineering president.”

Zhuang Baihua: …we could improve the air around here.

*

Zhuang Baihua held an enamel tea mug while kindly calling his subordinate into the office. After a long night’s talk, the subordinate staggered out blankly and went to help an old lady cross the road.

Everyone else: As expected of the extremist emperor CEO! He mindbroke him!

Zhuang Baihua: …I just taught him core values.

*

Chi Yue was the “little white flower” protagonist. Everyday, the five possessive love interests around him showcased their mental issues. Just when he’d gotten used to it, Zhuang Baihua appeared, presented a banner, and said with a face full of affectionate care, “Comrade, you’ve worked hard.”

Chi Yue: “….”

I love this take on the genre and MC was a super fresh character. In fact halfway through the book I wasn't even that concerned about the romance line but was focused solely on the plot and what was happening (also because MC was quite dense).

I liked how it didn't go the route of everyone falling over MC even though ... more>>

a good chunk of them do. Even obsessive big shot 4 WCS (but more like a friend way?). But MC was firm in his rejection and did not give any chance of hope to any of them. Which I liked very much for this kind of "multiple love interest" plot. I was genuinely surprised to find that even his bestie LZD had fallen for him but the vibes and chemistry were there. Kind of added to the absurdity of the storylines in the novel to have both a father and son duo both liking MC.

I also liked how MC stayed true to his character and genuinely wanted to help others. But even with good intentions, not everyone could be helped to the very end

like LXY. But those who fared better like Tang Toad and WCS even became great (funny) supporting cast.

Eventually, one of the best chara progressions for me was definitely ML.
Spoiler

His backstory was actually more tragic than I expected but he eventually overcame it with MC by his side.

My favourite side character is definitely Secretary Chen, the grand chamberlain. His inner thoughts of the emperor, demon concubine chi, harem and attending court was the funny highlight of the novel. And he was MC's solo fan.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book more than I expected. <<less

Pretty easy, fun and lighthearted read, that got increasingly ridiculous towards the middle and kinda predictable and drawn-out near the end. Had to kinda force myself to finish it, otherwise nothing bad to say. MC and ML are likeable, shipping of other pairings in chinese comments honestly I didn't understand.

Great translation work, as always.

A bit like Scott pilgrim vs the world but instead of seven evil exes it's like four obsessive 'love interests'.

MC - Baihua, super upright and kind guy transported into a domineering CEO role. Adjusts pretty well all things considered, tries to avoid Chi Yue at first but becomes really protective in time. Basically a good guy baffled by the obsessive maniacs bothering Chi Yue (including his original self). I like that his physique is rather muscular especially since he's the 'shou'. Honestly I sometimes think he's too nice in the... more>> sense he believes or wants everyone to return to becoming a better member so society.

ML - Chi Yue, obviously not as 'little white flower' as he appears. His inconsistencies and mysteries get brought up per the plot. Honestly, he's remarkably well adjusted all things considered.

I think the romance is pretty nice. You get why Chi Yue would fall in love with the MC. MC is also so concerned about Chi Yue it's easy to see it slide towards love. MC is always trying to bring light into Chi Yue's life and let him see that society is still good. Although Chi Yue is also too dependent on MC imo, it's understandable.

Otherwise I felt the plot was draggy towards the end and there are certain depictions of a specific mental illness that made me go hmm. <<less

I really like this novel, the MC is so reasonable and sensible, he knows he's in a novel and a lot of things aren't logical but he still makes the logical decisions that should be made in real life.

I also like how the ML starts out having the physique of a small and weak white lotus, but because of MC he starts stuffing himself with tonic soups, protein and doing a lot of exercise so he doesn't lose to the MC's muscular body.

My favorite character is the secretary with his... more>> continuous comments about the MC being the emperor and the ML being the demonic concubine, it's so hilarious that you have to be careful where you're reading it. <<less

MC's whole mission was to save ML and change the out of the ending.

All 5 possessive gongs* had mental problems. It really took someone like MC to treat them.

MC is a social justice warrior, he's kind and always upright, inspiring others. So positive and comfortable to be around.

... more>> ML suffered alot on the verge of giving up. Before MC appears. Our little weak lotus turn into ravish little wolf want to devour MC.

Comedy central seeing how MC using his upright aura and justified speeches combat these sick in the brains Gongs. 8 years gap ain't a joke but feel so natural.

Shout to Secretary Chen for being a great support.

Love this novel, short read but worth it <<less

OMG I AM SO LOVING THIS NOVEL!!

this is such a gold and I had to binge read it for a couple of days. CG never fails to amaze me with their selection of novel translation.

It had a lot of cliche point but the author utilized it in a way to make it more interesting. It's cliche with a lot of unexpected twist 💯

I love the characters specially CEO'S sec Cheng. His narratives are so funny I can't help but laugh out loud 🤣 specially when he thinks that they are... more>> in a court harem. He refers himself as grand chamberlein while the ML as a demon concubine (always thinking of seducing the emperor aka MC) 🤣 He always does his best to protect the destruction of the nation (aka to protect the business and the CEO from going wayward bec of the 'harem' 🤣)

Overall it was a fun read. If you like cliche stories, yandere ML/Sub ML with a dash of comedt story this not one to be missed ☺️ <<less

It's very wholesome and very sweet with MC doing his best to both do good by the characters and even follow his duties of the CEO. It was very refreshing to see a transmigrator who is struggling with the occupation of the OG and has to study hard to fulfill the expectations placed on him by the character role.

People have already commented on how kind he is with his approach of "You get therapy, and you get therapy, everyone gets therapy!", but I would also like to praise his morals... more>> and boundaries. He's kind, but not self-sacrificing, if someone goes too far, the MC is not reluctant to let them know how inappropriate that was.

All in all it's one of my all-time favorites. <<less

As someone who particularly dislikes obsessive characters, I thought I would drop this early in the story until the MC showed how to take care of them in the most legal or funny ways as possible.

So far, he has met three of the MLs and already helped all of them.

Spoiler

The first guy was pretty tame compared to the second one. And he also falls in love with the MC, which made the protagonist jealous lol.

The second guy was the first one I disliked but the arc ended in a satisfying way for all parties, even for the ML who was initially annoying and very creepy.

He just finished helping third ML in the latest chapter and the whole thing was crazy and hilarious.

I like how he tries to help them not only because of the protagonist but because he thinks they can improve as a person if they try. In a way, this makes him endearing to readers and the characters in the story.

[collapse]

Personally, I like that he's a tall and muscular guy because he was initially one of the MLs. I love that it's different from the usual slim and graceful MCs we get in CN danmei novels. I don't hate feminine characters but those tend to feel weird to me, probably because it's becoming a cliche that the bottom is supposed to be pretty and slender. He's obviously not feminine and the latest chapter showed that the readers (including me and the protagonist) prefer it that way.

Spoiler about the protagonist:

Spoiler

At first, I was wondering why he was hot and cold whenever he met up with the MC in the beginning of the story.

It was gradually revealed that he remembers what happened in the original story and is kind of forced to play his part despite doing his best to fight it. So him acting hot and cold was because he didn't like the MC or the OG who MC took over.

He falls for the MC midway because he slowly realized that he's a genuinely kind person and is different from what he remembers him to be. It's being shown that he's becoming possessive of the MC, probably because it feels like a breath of fresh air that someone wants to take care of him as a person and not as a toy/object to keep in one place.

[collapse]

The protagonist has his comedic moments because he's often confused about the MC's actions. He always reacts funnily about it then goes with the flow when his brain processed what just happened. I like their dynamic so far. He has interesting interactions with his father, the MLs, and the MC's secretary as well.

The dog-blood drama is very fascinating and entertaining. I usually avoid this kind of story but it made me want to read more just to find out how the MC will subvert all of the tropes. He's pretty logical and cunning about how he does it but because he's thinking as a middle-aged guy, he's pretty oblivious about other aspects like romance directed at him.

The CN comments added under each chapter are also funny to read. They're either hilarious or sharp since their speculations sometimes or often comes true. <<less

This was so good. I love the MCs personality so much. He dealt with all supporting MLs with kindness and logic. He didn't just teach them lesson but also seeks professional help when needed.

I love the twist and turn of the plot. Although I only read it via MTL it was still understandable. Thank you for the translator for picking this up!

The premise of this novel is how there's 5 obsessive characters pursuing over og!shou (cui yue), and MC (zhuang baihua) transmigrated as one of the obsessive gong. MC then try to save the original!shou and cure other gongs psychological problems with professional help. MC is the shou and og!shou will become gong.

It was a solid read with great plot and characters. Zhuang baihua is such a refreshing character, he got me laughing a lot in earlier chapters from how old fashioned he is. He's a little bit naive and too... more>> kind to people, but that doesn't mean he'll get taken advantage of. Beside him, I also love how every character feels alive –that’s the main charm of this novel for me.

so here's why I'm giving it 4 (more like 4.5 tbh) stars: I had to overcame my own mental barrier and told myself to stop nitpicking every little detail whenever the story got into the psychological therapy part lmao. This kind of thing usually ruins my enjoyment because it bothers me so much, but I’m way too engaged with the story to drop it over that. At one point, I was able to brainwash myself that everything is based on the novel’s law so I’m able to accept everything with a straight face. Just put that in mind and you'll be fine.

each to their own but I personally think this story is way too great to skip reading it just because of some incorrect psychological practices (I'm saying this as a psych grad lol). The tl is also great, the translator did a good job <<less

ahhh this was so funny and cute...i rlly enjoyed the way MC tried to help the other ml's with their obsession with the protagonist!

and MC and protags relationship started out pretty awkward and strained but overtime it developed rly nicely! enjoyed the fact that protag tried 'buffing' himself to become stronger than the MC by consuming protein powder and tonics.... super funny and cute lmfao!

however... the only thing I disliked was how they protrayed mental illnesses... specifically with the 5 obsessive bigshot, other than that this novel is fantastic!

I liked this one. Felt pretty refreshing since the MC has a pretty different vibe to him (old person).

I think this is the novel that was really true to its title and theme.

Yandere didn't just mean a little black-bellied or scheming, but really yandere in the scariest way. The author wrote the characters very well, fleshing them out and using them for their purpose, not just mentioning them and forgetting about them immediately. You really get to hate or get scared of some characters, and I think the author did a very great job for that.

It's also enjoyable how the story focused on the plot (and dare I... more>> tell you, the plot plot-ed) with a side of interaction with love interests. Nothing is boringly redundant because every arc is interesting, mysterious, and entertaining. Arc 2 was especially scary and Arc 3 was especially nerve-racking. It's also really lovely how these arcs are concluded because the protagonist stays logical all the time; his love interest is also not just some character for romance alone.

All in all, I think this book is well-balanced in its elements and is also a job well done by the author with the theme they wanted to showcase. If you want a book with great plot and a lot of feelings (really, a rollercoaster), this one's for you. <<less

I love novels with these kind of premises 😭🩷 the CP hooked me on so much!

I also love how despite the fact that the original novel was a dogblood novel, every characters were still fully fleshed out. You can't help but love the other gongs too!

Each characters had their own reasons for the way they are but it's comedic how everything was explained by the fact that it's a dogblood novel. Definitely a 5 stars from me! I recommend it!

Yowwwww just read the high rating star reviews!! Hooked by this novel. With diff big shots pinning for MC /Xiao Yue. Xiao yue been thru a lot huhu nice that Community director Zang came to his life. It was a roller coaster of story on how ML&MC faced the possessive big shots. Dr/Pres Zang is such a green forest!!! Story is funny with a touch of yandere cause of the bigshots problems. Anyways def worth the read!!
