Qin Nanshan is one of the types of men that Wen Yi dislikes the most. He is rigid and serious, with no hobbies or passions, like a stagnant pool of water in the deep forest, unaffected by any stones thrown into it.

After a chaotic night, Wen Yi updates her perception; he is not entirely without merit.

A month later, Wen Yi looked at the two distinct red lines on the pregnancy test strip and fell into deep thought.

From the time she could remember, she had never thought about getting married or having children.

Qin Nanshan is 28 years old, an associate professor in the mathematics department at University A. He is a perfectionist and hates surprises, whether in mathematical formulas or in life.

When Wen Yi came to his door, he hadn’t slept all night, forcing himself to accept this surprise.

Getting the marriage certificate, holding the wedding, and living together, they were forced into a marriage.

One winter night, Wen Yi suddenly wanted to eat something sour. She changed her clothes and prepared to go out.

In the living room, Qin Nanshan, dressed neatly and working overtime, looked at the shoes she had kicked off at the entrance and frowned. He patiently asked, “Where are you going?”

“I want to eat something sour.”

“Is it a must?”

“Yes.”

The man glanced at his watch; it was twelve minutes past midnight.

He sighed softly in his heart, stood up, and helplessly said, “I’ll go buy it for you.”

This is a story of a mature man and woman who fall in love after an unexpected pregnancy.

I liked a lot of things about this novel. I just chose it randomly when I decided to dive into 'marriage first, love later' tag on JJ. I thought I won bingo, because two of the four stories I chose had protags with same last names and almost same premises. And all felt kinda melodramatic.. But thankfully I gave this novel a chance and this novel was different and despite how it sounds in the summary I'm glad I read it.

It's a more mature version of such a situation where... more>> two almost completely different people, adults who were once just classmates are now faced with the idea of changing their lives and starting a family.

Note: The two took precautions, so don't think that two people had no concept of protection, even if two had been intoxicated, but fate was at play.

Note: Wen Yi is a pharmaceutical representative (?) anyway someone in the comments on JJ said that the "intrigues" at the work place were real, because Wen Yi was plotted by someone to have a relationship with a doctor I think, whose reputation is not the best, so she could have a handle and not get promoted.

Qin Nanshan is associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, he actually planned to go abroad for few years etc. But he took responsibility.

And this is not some passionate story, I must say that some might not even like it. Simply because Wen Yi is a strong career woman. She's the type who is all about her job, to the point of not even bothering to cook for herself, because of her busyness and she eats out a lot as a sales person anyway. The warmth of her own family and having children was never on her radar anyway. And I kinda like her attitude, because she is not shying away from voicing her opinion or discussing things. Like she found out that she was pregnant and she took it upon herself to inform the other party that I plan to abort the child (despite the risk of it and her rare blood type on top of that) and then they agreed to keep the child on the basis of getting married, since her own family situation is a single mom raising a daughter and she never wanted to repeat that fate her mom had. Although Qin Nanshan at first just agreed to her idea, but after thinking about it more he met Wen Yi and explained more elaborately that he is ready to take responsibility for her and her child, if she decided to keep the child. A lot of time what I don't like in these novels is the miscommunication as a trope, as if it is so hard to open your mouth and talk to another person. Adults should just say what's on their minds and discuss. Like she wanted to live alone, because I'm sure living with the parents would be hella awkward for two adult people who are not that close themselves, she also confessed that she's worse at cooking and stuff, so Nanshan took it upon himself to take care of household things. After all it's not just a child, as said their whole career path started to change because of this decision and they must stick to it and not regret it. Before she got pregnant she finally got a promotion she was waiting for, she had a lot of prospects, but despite the seemingly good attitude towards women in their company she was still tranferred eventually, which hit her in a way.

They start their cohabitation almost like roommates, because they skipped a lot of those steps others follow along before getting married. So they were awkward at first before opening up to the fact that Wen Yi doesn't want it to be an abstinent marriage, she's not playing house here and Nanshan never crossed boundries and simply waited for her respectfully.

Maybe because it's a more down to earth story, with no elaborate plots that I liked it. This story about an accident and how two people decided to deal with it, but actually felt attracted to each other as a result of this forced proximity.

How?

Wen Yi at first really did not prefer Nanshan's temperament, he is dull when it comes to communication and it feels like he is too rigid (although at least good in bed), but with time she realized that his temperament is actually great, he is stable like a mountain when it comes to emotions and other things. Her attitude might not be the best during the pregnancy, but he showed himself as a champ. In life they have completely different temperaments, but he does his thing without ever complaining. E.g. He understands that it's his own thing when it comes to cleanliness (a bit like OCD) and they should slowly adapt. To him Wen Yi is actually someone who brought in more color, she is always outgoing and talkative, his complete opposite, although it's an accident that they got pregnant, but he doesn't consider it a bad thing. It becomes especially tender with the development of their relationship and the baby growth.

It's a story where two adults might have realized that even if it as accident, but they found each other at the right time, like they talked about what if they fell in love earlier, like in school, but both agreed they were preoccupied by other things back then. Now they have a chance to meet together and they warmed up to each other as individuals they never expected to like. But they came to like each other deeply.

Among other things I enjoyed this story because of more mature side than just being a plain entertainment novel with melodramatic plots and up and downs.

The only thing I could say a word or two about is actually - why every other novel wants to give birth to a girl? Was patriarchy so destructive that each author now, whenever there is a pregnancy, they give birth to a girl. Like especially in those novels about 80's etc. It's funny because ten out of ten books will be about girls being born. Girls are good, but what is that fear of writing about a boy. And I saw some comments under a boy being born once that they said something about how it's old-fashioned thinking etc.. <<less
