Rural Romance: Handsome Top x Charming Bottom

A gentle and reserved handsome top (Du Yunyan) x a handsome bottom from a wealthy family with a carefree attitude (Gu Wenxi)

After quarrels with his father and his girlfriend cheating on him, the wealthy young master Gu Wenxi leaves home and runs away to a small mountain village known for its soul-cleansing backpacker atmosphere. There, he meets the beautiful and mysterious innkeeper Du Yunyan. Shortly after, when his credit card gets frozen, he shamelessly asks Du Yunyan to let him stay and work at the inn.

Du Yunyan is meticulous, while Gu Wenxi is carefree and unrestrained. After stumbling through a winter together, their attitudes toward each other subtly change. At this moment, Gu Wenxi receives another call urging him to return home…

“Between us, this is good enough.”

“What if I come back? Will you let me finish what I wanted to say today?”

“You won’t come back, and don’t do anything unworthy anymore.”

Notes:

The geographical setting is a fictional southern mountain village, with fictional place names and no real prototypes.
The top initially has feelings for someone else (never been together), and there’s a minor rival in love for the bottom (limited plot).
The top is 29 years old, the bottom is 26 years old, with the top being slightly shorter than the bottom according to the setting.

It was a calming and sweet slice of life novel.

If the author didn't tell us who was the gong and shou, I feel like it wouldn't have been as easy to figure it out ... more>>

. Their personalities feel realistic and it didn't feel like a certain character was exaggerated to play the gong/shou role.

The way the MC&ML got together was natural and although like in the synopsis, it says the ML initially had feelings for someone else, those feelings didn't affect him in the same way compared to when he started developing feelings for the MC. During the ambiguity and dating phase of their relationship, you can see that they bring out the best out of each other/help each other grow.

Overall, I would recommend this novel if you're looking for a calming but sweet slice of life novel with minimal drama. <<less

(4.5 ⭐️) I rarely read romance novels because I prefer action, fantasy, and novels that focus more on world building. I picked up this novel as a distraction but it turned out to be quite good.

The story revolves around MC and ML's relationship without much tension. Their love story is quite true to reality and quite mature.

There are many surprises in this novel, I was fooled in guessing who the top/gong was, and was very surprised when it was revealed, but that's a good thing.

I'm so bored with other CN novels that depict bottom/shou as weak people and have to be pampered like women, but this novel is different, and I think the MC and ML pair are an ideal couple. <<less

It really light than what I was expected, at first I think it might heavy and full of melancholy but it full of warm and healing aspects, it do has a conflic but they perfectly resolved, when I saw the notice about 1 chapter until final, I feel so reluctant to part with it.. I really want to see extras just 3-4 chp it's enough

This story is a refreshing change. It's one of the best slice-of-life reads I've encountered. I absolutely loved the main characters. The pacing is perfect, with everything flowing smoothly. It never feels dragged out or rushed. I'm genuinely glad I read this—it makes me want to fall in love just like they did. Du Yunyan and Gu Wenxin, I hope you're always healthy and happy.

My favorite part of every novel is when you find out why the characters are the way they are. There are always reasons - and sometimes they're surprising - as in the case of why Du Yunyan presents an almost emotionless facade.

This novel is well worth the read. And when you're finished with this one, check out the author's other novel 'What Are Your Tastes', which I enjoyed just as much or more.

Thank you to Shanghai Fantasy for the excellent translation.

Very heartwarming story..

I really loved the story setting so much. The mountains, the inn.. Everything was vivid in my imagination.. I also loved the dynamic between the two main characters and how their relationship progressed step by step. It was such a tender and lovely journey. Their relationship was very healthy and I really love how they understand and support each other. They have the kind of peace in their love story.. I really loved that..

A big thank for the author and translator!

Highly recommended!

Fantastic read, very mature characters. They come together very naturally and the romance is very sweet, but not overly idealistic.

I loved that

It's been a long time since I read a good feel-good novel.

I love that the MC and ML have equal standing in their relationship. Their personalities complement each other so well. The shou (MC) is the one who takes the initiative in the relationship, while the gong (ML), due to his strained relationship with his mother, has low expectations of others. So, his struggle to trust the MC’s words, especially when the MC promised he’d come back, is understandable.

It's not a major issue, but I was a bit disappointed with how the ML's relationship with Yun Han (?) was wrapped up. I guess I was expecting proper closure. Even though the ML was rejected, he still had lingering feelings for the other person. It might not be in line with his personality to take the initiative to tell Yun Han about his new relationship with the MC, but if only he had done so after getting together with the MC, I would’ve felt more at ease knowing he's truly in love with the MC and has moved on from Yun Han.

[collapse]

Still, I really love their relationship. Reading this was refreshing, and I enjoyed it a lot.

PS: Idk if it's important to some but don't expect smut scenes on this. It's the type where the s*x scenes were just mentioned and then the next scene would be them waking up in the morning. <<less

Absolutely loved this tender and gentle slice of life and I adore its mature characters who slowly grow on you and who communicate so beautifully and in such a healthy way. It's incredibly similar to the novel The lingering sound of blooming flowers (or at least the beginning) but for some reason, though also beautiful, I found that one kind of boring while I totally enjoyed this one here.

I have mixed feelings about being drunk. But our MC has his own thoughts!

I thought I reviewed this? I remember pouring my heart out to the skies! Was it a dream?

My favorite teacher Shishi, your works flow like fragrant meat and flowing wine, aiya don’t mention meat. Don’t.

... more>> Rich young master comes to a little town, where the very fragrant worker stays. The smell is too intoxicating, what to do? Get drunk!

I believe this is possibly one of the most realistic stories written by teacher, there’s so much in life, so much we want and so much we don’t want to let go of. But some things just need to go. Some things just won’t stay, it can only crumble away like sand if you hold onto it too tightly.

Our paths in life aren’t perfect. We may love the wrong person, live the wrong life and work toward the wrong thing, but what matters is what we’ve learnt from those experiences right? People need to move on and I believe this book has perfectly showed that to us.

Sometimes a little tipsy impulsive jump is what pushes you to make the hardest choices in your life. Choices that may change your life forever.

Wish you the best my babies. Love love love you.

Highly recommend. <<less

This is very slice of life. No drama or tension. Good to unwind after an angst novella. A sugar sweet story. Best to read it in conjunction with Shared Universe story "What Are Your Tastes?" (a better executed story imo).
