So I've read over 150 chapters of the raws, and if I really disliked a series I never would have gotten that far to begin with. Especially with raws which generally take more effort to read. But let me just say that if you're the type of person who is frustrated by extremely slow romantic plots then prepare to be frustrated...

This is a story about a magical craftswoman named Dahlia who is brimming with talent (partially because of memories from a previous life... yes this is an isekai but it's... more>> the kind of isekai where that barely even matters most of the time) she had a fiance arranged by their parents but Dahlia's father passed away (and she never really knew her mother). While she didn't dislike her fiance it's also hard to say she ever loved him either and was more or less just going along with things until he cheats on her and wants to break up just days before they're supposed to have their marriage. Her fiance was also supposed to be her business partner so Dahlia is forced to carry on completely alone, though it turns out she's actually really good at what she does. If anything it feels like she was being held back by the people around her and is really stretching her wings for the first time now.

Shortly afterwards she meets Woldred and they immediately hit it off. But that's also where the frustration I mentioned before comes in. 150 chapters in and it's completely obvious to everyone around them that the two of them are in love, but far from confessing neither of them will even admit so much to themselves, insisting instead that they're 'just friends' despite basically constantly thinking of the other person. It can be sweet in a way but it can also get extremely tiring seeing this pattern repeat itself over and over.

Besides the romance there's decent world-building (though I am occasionally baffled that some of the things Darhlia invents weren't invented already...) and some light politics, but most of the conflicts that too take place seem to resolve themselves pretty quickly. There's also a lot of food stuff, though thank god for once the food actually seems appropriate for the setting rather than the more common JAPANESE FOOD IS THE BEST AND ONCE PEOPLE TRY IT THEY WON'T WANT ANYTHING ELSE isekai nonsense. But don't expect any epic adventures here as it's a pretty low-key slice-of-life story. <<less

Like a few other people, I started reading this after (both) manga releases. It took reading this to crystallize what about the series bothers me: There's this constant undertone of pressure to adhere to some kind of propriety that is constantly shifting and often contradicts itself.

But lets start with positive elements: The concept is light and playful, and the story moves along pleasantly, if a tad bogged down at times. Characters are fun and easy to recall.

Our heroine decides to live her life the way she chooses without hanging her head down as a result of playing the role of the obedient dutiful wife for her (ex-) fiancee. Then with her newfound determination, she's immediately browbeaten by her friends at the guild into opening a business (over her own protests), and then again into a makeover to play the role of the upright business owner, instead of a magical engineer. Then she meets the male lead while pretending to be a man for safety's sake, who happens to be a low-ranked son of high nobility who doesn't bother introducing himself as such except when socially expedient. And the ex-fiancee is just low hanging fruit for this, so lets skip him...

This all leads to characters feeling like they put on endless facades when the point of the title is that they are no longer doing that. Even hours after deciding that they'll live their life how they choose.

All in all, it made for an entertaining read, but there was a disquieting feel to it that got worse with more musing. <<less

I really like and kind of dislike this story.

I enjoy the"artisan part" of it, Dahlia has ideas, she tries them, sometimes she get it right sometimes not. I don't mind how she slowly proceed by trial and error with or without Wolfred.

The love story is slow too, but sometimes it's nice to read that kind of romance.

My problem is with the etiquette, the propriety that's everywhere in this story. Can't say this, can't wear that, can't do this, can't think that, this kind of sentence has this kind of hidden... more>> meaning, like this kind of gesture or this kind of clothing, or... They really hinder the story and are a pain. I think the author will use them to continue to slow down the romance, but I feel annoyed because I've read really good slow romances that didn't use any kind of artifice and I feel constricted while reading it. I feel the love strory won't be a really slow burn, just a slow frustrating one, but of course I can't know at this point.

I wonder if this kind of restricted behavior was the norm in ancient Japan, but then why send your hero in a western background? <<less

I mostly agree with what other reviewers are saying. Another thing that irked me though was the writing of the situation with the ex-fiance, which is just a symptom of the overall writing problems with the story. Yes he's at fault, but the novel waxes poetic about how he's terrible without acknowledging how the MC may also have played a part in the breakdown of their relationship. The ex-fiance being guilty doesn't mean the MC is innocent, but the story frames it like he's a Horrible Abusive Ex-Boyfriend when he's... more>> really Just Some f*ckboy.

On one hand he's controlling, telling the MC how to dress or that she couldn't do her hair how she wanted to. The MC's feelings on this range from "don't care" to "kinda bummed". He keeps pushing her bottom line to try to get a reaction, but she never actually tells him when she doesn't like it and also later lets her friends peer pressure her and make all her life decisions for her anyway, so why is this presented as an example of how terrible the ex is and not how much of a pushover the MC is?

The controlling-ness also stemmed less from "you're my woman and need to do what I say" and more from the ex-fiance's insecurities and inferiority complex, which the MC is aware of but doesn't care about. However, despite the fact that MC had known the ex her entire life and took the engagement "seriously" she never cares about him enough to discuss anything personal whatsoever or try to reassure or encourage him, which shows how much she really cared about their relationship. MC straight up admits that she never loved her ex-fiance and only ever shows indifference towards him, yet everyone acts like it's entirely the ex's fault that the relationship didn't work out. MC's attitude and behavior definitely fed into his insecurities about their relationship but she takes no responsibility for it. It's telling that ex's new girlfriend is far more affectionate with him; remember, the opposite of love isn't hate, it's apathy!

He's a bad guy because he admitted to cheating and broke it off before it was too late rather than going through with the wedding and letting MC find out on her own. Their marriage would have almost certainly been miserable, but instead of being framed as a "silver lining" or "maybe this was for the best" it's all about how the ex is a terrible person for breaking the marriage arranged by their parents right before the wedding. Putting his name and not including MC's on a patent for MC's invention was wrong. But what is the MC doing letting him handle all the paperwork alone before they were actually married and not doing it herself or double-checking it? She calls herself a professional but doesn't take responsibility for her own work? But the ex's career ends up ruined because everyone likes the MC more, despite the MC's proven lack of care and/or diligence when it comes to her inventions. I've seen other male characters do worse with less consequences.

The point of this rant is that the writing is lazy and things are the way they are because the plot demands it - ex needs to be horrendous and bad, so everyone says he is terrible and MC is an innocent angel despite the text lacking the evidence to back it up. This isn't excusing the ex, it's complaining about the characterization of both the MC and the ex. All this is before getting into how the story starts dragging and gets boring after a while, amongst other things. 2/5, had potential but disappointed me so much that I dropped it an entire point <<less

I’m currently on chapter 57 but I have a few things that really annoy me. First of all I came to this novel because the idea of a crafting novel really interested me, so I was really looking forward to the crafting and a bit of the romance as well. However it has been a really big disappointment on that aspect, the author has spent more time on cooking food and drinking alcohol than the crafting! Like seriously, out of the 57 chapters, at least 30 of those chapters were... more>> just the MC and a multitude of other people drinking alcohol and eating food. Like where is the crafting??? This whole novel is about a dam magic craftsman but there is barely any crafting! Like I don’t care about how fragrant the damn red bear steak is! I really wish the author didn’t spend so much time writing about how good the food they are eating and how good the alcohol they are drinking is and spend more time on what most of us probably went to this novel for, developing the relationship between the two leads and the magic crafting. Let’s not forget the mc’s horrible business sense and narrow-mindedness, because she starts a business and has multiple investors that are massively helping her in the development of her products and business in general, like giving advice, helping her make connections, and a multitude of other things. However when they are talking about pricing of her first product to be sold under the name of her company, she wants to lowball the price like crazy because she “wants to make it affordable for the masses” without realizing that the products used aren’t exactly cheap, not to mention she has multiple investors waiting for her to make profits so they can actually get benefits for all of the money and time they have already spent helping her, not to mention, as one of the characters even pointed out to her, by raising the price of her first product which I might add will be guaranteed to be extremely popular, she can make a large profit by which she can further stabilize her business, have funds for future research, to further improve her products and then she can make something even better than this first product and a much lower price! Which in the end will accomplish the goal she had wanted (making it affordable to the masses) but instead of thinking about the big picture, she is extremely narrow minded and draws the line, and because she is the ceo the basically had to cave. Like I said she is a horrible businessman, she can low ball her products all she wants when she was just a lone craftsman, but now she is a business and she has to provide for her company, and make money for her investors who have already put a lot of money into making her business purely out of good will, but she’s taking it all for granted. <<less

This is one of those "the title is a lie" novels.

What I mean by this is, the title implies Dahlia will not be put down by others and/or follow their whims. Unfortunately, the plot is moved forward mostly by Dahlia doing... exactly that? It feels like most of her achievements happen because she begrudgingly does what someone else told her to do. This, combined with the fact that Dahlia needs to constantly adjust her behavior to adapt to the nobility makes me feel like the title should be "Magical Device... more>> Craftsman Dahlia Still Hangs Her Head Down, But Only When It's Plot Convenient".

Other than that it's a decent, if a bit tensionless, story. Not terrible, but nothing to really write home about (especially since it's very trendy for female-lead isekais to have the main character be an entrepreneur anyway). <<less

I keep waiting for something to happen (-_-) but after the engagement is over she legit just eats and acts dense... even for slice-of-life this is kinda boring.

All this novel does is bring up is formality and describes how things are supposed to be, the FL is constantly apologizing and trying to make everyone happy despite saying she wanted to live for herself!

i just dont get it... whats even the point of this novel?? To show a mary-sue handling everything in her life with apathy and teasing a romance that's... more>> basically moving at a snail's pace!?!? <<less

Vol 1:

It was an interesting start, I liked reading about the MC finding her own suppressed self. I understand how it can become a habit when one gives way to others and forgets their own wants and needs.

The MC had a rather rude waking up to but she was able to decide that it had been enough and it was time to live for herself. I'm interested to see her journey to growing her self confidence and self love.

And that leads to my second point that I liked, the relationship... more>> between our main leads starting out as friends. I think that both of them had been disappointed in life and the mere idea of love just doesn't seem right to them, so I liked this friendship that with time could develop further.

I also liked that the MC for all of her lack of confidence in other things she had confidence in her craft and had gained respect as a craftswoman. I liked the friends she had and the people that respected her and cheer her own.

I'll see how the story goes.

Vol 2:

Well, this volume disappointed me quite a bit. Besides the moments where she would craft something I found it boring. There were times where there were business matter and it wasn't interesting at all to me. Also, I thought that at least she had some knowledge when she let the others convince her to start her trading company but I didn't think that she would be completely useless.

There was also too much drinking and descriptions of foods that paired well with different types of drinks and I, myself, not being a drinker got really bored and skipped those parts.

I don't really care much about what will happen next, I can't find anything to look forward to, I really like light slice of life stories but this one didn't grab my attention.

So I'll stop with this volume. <<less

I came here after reading the manga.. So far there is only one chapter out for the novel so it’s too early to judge but both the manga is really awesome and promising. It’s super fun to see how they try to work out the magic aspect into a believable “science”. I don’t care much about the generic broken romance but the FL and the friends are likeable.

Will update this once there are more releases.

This is possible one of the most slow pace low key slice of life stories. Some biz building that's enjoyable. Some invention that's enjoyable. Some really slow slow pace romance. But worth it so dang worth it. It doesn't get bogged down on the same ole same japanese editor habits. It doesn't try to be something it's not. Which means that if you aren't into this type of slower pace, slice of life. Wholesome knightly stuff this isn't your jam and that's ok. But what it is trying to be... more>> it's highly talented at. Also, it's stronger writer because it's not leaning into the pictures like many lightnovels have a habit of doing. There's a lot on the table here. If you are a fan of bookworm, princess jellyfish. It's that light hopeful and also character building vibe. You care about small stories and the big one. <<less

This is one of those shoujo romance stories set in a medieval fantasy world that has a lot of modern contemporary magical inventions. The author begins slow because before there is romance, there must be tragedy of sorts for MC Dahlia. The author remains true to the story title and has Dahlia progressively re-entering society now that she is no longer working behind a man taking credit for her work. Feminism aside, Dahlia continually has substantial help from both men and women as well as borrowing influence from nobles,... more>> so this is not strictly a feminist story for those who may have followed the author's background. After her fiance leaves her, she very quickly starts to live her live more fully. She drastically changes her looks and becomes an attractive redhead along with a newfound appreciation for cosmetics rather than remaining a dowdy girl hiding behind a man. The author makes sure with a heavy hand to make her former fiance into the bad guy while not mentioning anything bad about the MC.

For a woman on the rebound, Dahlia's pace at getting a new romance is appropriate for a light novel. With light novels being 50, 000 words (or far more if it's something like Log Horizon), the romance should be starting to grow somewhere around 3/4 of the way through the first volume. Dahlia's naivety does feel artificial to me since she did go to college. Yes, this is a rather contemporary medieval fantasy society. Consumerism aside, the fantasy magical product crafting aspect is there but the technical accuracy of product creation takes a backseat. Device crafting is the vehicle to keep the MC meeting new influential people as well as VIP and nobles. It also provides a reason for the MC to earn money thru patents and connections with society VIP and nobility. The author removed conflict and troublesome fee collection for Dahlia by having a society with people respects patents or they become criminals and can be turned into s*aves. Piracy is a serious crime with strong penalties such as the convict can be turned into a penal work s*ave. S*avery exists in this world, but at chapter 48, I don't know if the author is vindictive enough to throw Dahlia's opponents into the s*ave pit. <<less

I liked the first 2 volumes so far! It reminds me of The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent in that the FL is a grown woman, romance-adverse, focused on her own work (i.e. Expect much description of modern everyday inventions in slice-of-life style), and had the good luck to be reincarnated into a world where (most) people aren't trying to take advantage of her
