Make Dark Fantasy Great Again

The world I transmigrated into was a dark fantasy game universe, devoid of hope or dreams.

Doesn’t feel like it at all, though.

This is a lucky protagonist with a misunderstanding trope story. It's fairly entertaining because the author actually shows what would've happened normally if not for the MC getting in the way from detailing game scenes or through forum threads. All the while the MC is blissfully unaware.

MC knows he's in a fantasy world but doesn't know if it was from the previous dark fantasy game he knew about and even if he did, he would have no idea what's going on because he didn't actually play the game. By having... more>> modern sensibilities and a passive power to be in a constant "normal" state, he breaks flags that obviously would be bad for him and others around him. Curses don't work on him, killing intent doesn't show up, magic and other mind altering things don't work either.

If you like this type of story it's enjoyable from the misunderstandings and how just being a "normal" modern person gets the MC through the game's dark fantasy. <<less

I would like to clear up something here to people here who have read like 10 chapters and still don't get what's going on..

It took me 11 chapters to finally understand what the main character's power is all about.. And his powers is literally the title of the novel (The title of the novel is actually Dark fantasy normalized).. If you still don't get it, the story takes place in a dark fantasy setting and every story encounter he has is destined to have a bad ending. The main character's... more>> power is normalizing that bad ending to be a good ending.. And that's pretty much it.. He does get more powers later on but his main schtick is still the normalization powers..

some of the encounters have pretty well made bad endings.. And some actually have connections to one another.. So please don't be afraid and give this series a try.. <<less

UPDATED (c170)

It is a great if slightly disappointing novel (because it uses the same 'cheat'/'shortcut'/'lazy writing' as many other novels, which is kind of a shame to me).

Writing style is definitely a con for me; it was not just a translation issue since I switched translation a few times by now and went to the raw. Author has a pretty annoying way of writing some stuff. Well, put in the nicest way possible, it might be an interesting writing style assuming a master-class translator picked it up... but any... more>> less than that or, worse, AI translation, and it becomes kind of garbage writing style.

I like the novel overall. Not sure I would call it a misunderstanding story? Or should I say it is a twist on the usual misunderstanding trope? Really weird. Actually the main reason I like it, I guess, is it tries to do its own thing for the most part.

Since I ultimately really enjoy reading it I'll keep 5/5, but some of the things I was disappointed about:

  • Story takes place in the same city so far (from chapter ~30 onwards). MC settle in, grows his thing here, but never moves. As a result, overall world building is left minimal, it is hard to be excited about long term things, the setting becomes a bit repetitive and ridiculous things keep happening in the same city for things to move forward. It's not even the capital - just a slightly large city. Maybe it would be less annoying if MC actually made something in that city but he just lives from day to day - not exactly meaninglessly, but he sometimes feel like a homeless people freeloading at places.
  • As a side effect of the previous point, side character are in an awkward spot. They are introduced, then thrown away for the most part. A few stick, but they are the exception. The problem: they still all live in the same city, so the fact they never appear again is off-putting. Wouldn't be an issue if he was travelling and only a few party member stuck around, but staying in the same place but somehow 80% of the "important" side characters just "disappear" is really weird.
  • MC power is becoming too random. One of the things I praised the novel for in the beginning was how "rational" the power is and how "explainable" it was. Overpowered? Sure. But explainable, understandable, almost reasonable all things considered. Unfortunately, slowly but surely, it changes. MC becomes able to do random stuff his power does not cover and, reversely, stuff his power should have covered are no longer covered. MC's cheat just becomes generic plot armor 101.
  • As a side note, MC is getting too many random power. A mage, a swordsman, a 'priest', a 'black mage', a spirit user, a guardian spirit... He is collecting them like pokemon. Well, maybe it is fitting since power level was never the point of this novel, but I do wish it stuck more around a thema. I mean, sorry, but the whole 'magic swordsman' is so cliche I'm cringing inside. Do we really need every mage MC to spend all their time swinging a sword 100 chapters after the beginning of the novel? 'He somehow 'absorbed' the willpower of an evil sword so now he is a genius swordsman even though he was worse than useless just before ~~' RIP.
  • #JusticeForTheSacredSword => those who read the novel know.
However, there are also things I greatly enjoyed in the novel.

  • This is a 'game' setting but the MC does not know the game. Reader gets meta knowledge from 'forum discussion' but MC himself is left clueless.
  • Game is sadistic and full of bullshit. We sometimes have side stories on 'How the game should have gone', but then we have our actual novel with the MC s*upid power normalizing stuff left and right. This is a feel-good story - what if dark fantasy could be actually smacked down?
  • Important things should be said twice. The contrast between the 'meta knowledge' through 'forum discussion' + 'another tale' (ie side story) and then the actual novel content with our MC in it is the main thing for this novel and will probably be a deciding factor on whether you enjoy this novel or not. It is a weird but interesting writing structure.
  • Church is not evil. Imagine how rare that is in media nowadays.
  • Characters are nice and likable for the most part.
  • MC is surprisingly good? Usually in this kind of story the MC is its worst part but this time he is fine.
  • And more, but can't said much more without going into full spoiler territory I think, or at least too lazy to.
ORIGINAL (c24)

Weird but in a good way.

"Dark Fantasy Normalization" is probably a better suited title to the novel compared to "Make Dark Fantasy Great Again".

Misunderstanding situations but misunderstanding in which people involved are not dumb... ie, actual misunderstandings.

Rather satisfying MC. He has a kind of OP power in a way but I would argue his main OP power is simply his way of thinking. When you stop giving a sh*t and stop trying to fulfill societal expectations, it's like a superpower ironically. Maybe a lesson to be learned. (though of course it is easier to do that when you have the skills, power, allies and plot armor to actually ignore societal expectations)

Writing style is fairly good and the execution is, dare I say, original. Or as close to original you can be in the 2025 webnovel scene.

That being said. I don't know if it is translation or original writting. But something is a bit annoying with the way it is written. I tried to give the same feeling in how I wrote this review. Maybe I succeeded.

Characters are surprisingly decent. A bit too early to say much more honestly. I do fear the Harem tag greatly though...

To be honest I dunno if this novel would actually stay good for over 100 chapters since it seems like it will quickly become quite repetitive but as of chapter 24 I like it at least. <<less

After reading 33 chapters, I can say that it's boring. Misunderstandings are not funny, but the combination with dark fantasy makes it rather absurd.

The plot seems to have no purpose just like the main character. You know, like a student who has just graduated from university and has no idea what he wants to do. It's the same with the main character, he wants to be "happy" and "earn money" but has no specific plan. Everything is pretty shallow at the moment. Some kind of antagonist or people who need... more>> help appear -> the hero introduces himself to them, not forgetting to notice that he is an illegitimate child -> the hero changes the outcome with his unique strength -> they thank him and change their attitude -> repeat again. So far, even the shadow of a large arch has not been noticed, and the incidents are not connected in any way.

Separately, it is worth noting the constant unnecessary mention of the fact that he is a bastard. I honestly don't understand why to mention this, because it doesn't give any advantages, but on the contrary, there is always some kind of snob who looks down on him. When meeting new people in a new place where no one knows him, he will definitely mention this.

then there's his "special color" which ignores any power ranks. Dispel powerful curses ? Poisons? Mental interference? Changing reality? It's like a magic wand that the author uses to solve any problem that stands in the way of the main character. The main character's entire path looks like a well-paved road along which he drives a Ferrari.

the novel is not complete garbage, but at the moment it is not worth paying attention if nothing changes in the future. <<less

Imagine a world where everything feels doomed, with bad endings waiting around every corner. Then comes MC, fixing things before they go wrong deliberately or not. The best part of reading it is knowing the MC won't let you down. Plus I like the characters personality, and the interaction between them feel fresh and fun

Overall, the reading experience stays lighthearted and interesting.

Excellent, exquisite, and wonderful! I read many novels online, and good stories seem far in-between. The writer of this novel is really really good. I expect a Japanese company will buy rights to make it into an anime.

This story has light hearted comedy with a good pace of progression to the story and likable characters.
