I read this novel because of a recommendation. I didn't even read the synopsis; I only scanned through tags, and the only thing I regret right now is that I didn't read it sooner. It is well-written, the plot is amazing, and the characters are so good. I especially love MC, the cold beauty with a bad temperament and even worse intentions. To be honest, at first he really scared me; he acted like a villain, but at some point in the story, I joined the ML camp and started... more>> thinking that when MC did bad things, he looked even more beautiful. I don't think that MC is a bad person; he only wanted to study his poisons, but some people just kept bothering him and kindly delivered themselves to be the subject of MC's experiments. And ML is a lovely salted fish whose dream is to do nothing, eat well, and sleep well, but when needed, he can be a truly capable person. He is smart but lazy. I adore the MC and ML interactions; they went from bickering strangers to each other's confidants and finally fell in love.

I will try not to write anything about the plot; spoiling this beautiful work would be a crime. In terms of plot and writing, this novel is brilliant. There are some lovely, funny, and sad moments. But most of the time, I was waiting for another shoe to drop. This is one of these kinds of stories: when you know that something bad will happen, you also know that everything in the end will be alright, but you are still distressed. Just because the protagonists are in difficult situations and are hurting. Their emotions are described so vividly that you, too, get immersed. I think It shows how well this novel is written.

The style of storytelling is good. The flow is perfect—not too fast nor too slow. The romance might seem a little bit slow, but the interactions between MC and ML are so good that it doesn't matter if they are enemies, just friends, or lovers; it is simply entertaining in either way. Since these two have truly different characters and ambitions (in the case of ML, it can hardly be called ambition), it seems that they have nothing in common, and it is impossible for them to fall in love, but of course they will since this is BL. The relationship's development is very believable; you won't doubt why or how they fell in love. You can see how, step by step, gradually their feelings are changing. Apart from that, there are so many intrigues and plot twists that you can't get bored. Sometimes there are some leisurely chapters about everyday life, but they are scarce. I wouldn't say that this book is too angsty; there is a lot of drama and sad moments, but not too much. It is a perfectly balanced plot that will make you sometimes sad and sometimes happy, but you will never regret reading it. <<less

Hidden Gem!

I avoided this one for a long time because the summary was so terrible, but I am so glad I finally gave it a chance. This is an absolutely lovely, charming, hilarious story, and it's so well-written and paced! The only issue is the editing, which it sorely needs--there are a ton of typos and misspellings. But it's still absolutely worth reading!!

Very over rated...

The concept in itself is great but the execution is terrible.

Plot does not seem to hold very well, there is a lot of stalling, the 2nd reincarnation is great the 3rd is so obviously shoe horned in it's painful.

... more>> I like ML's chara development to some extent but then MC is just insufferable. All side couples that were interesting were done with very swiftly leaving us with only the main couple which is fine I suppose but so boring.

Court drama was decent to a point, I wish the 3rd reincarnation took place in a different way coz it made last 30 chapters a complete pain to go through.

Actually, the plot of this story itself is not too complicated.

The real reason why this story has such a high rating is because the plot is very smooth and addicting.

I love how MC and ML in this story have a very sweet relationship, and I also love how this doesn't necessarily make the two of them look like a s*upid couple.

In fact both of them are very smart, MC himself is a really vengeful person, while ML can be said to be a catalyst that directs MC so that his... more>> nature doesn't go out of control blindly.

I also like how the author straightens out the bad traits of original MC (the actual MC in the novel where ML transmigrated) where previously he always forgave original ML (the main villain in the first arc, the crown prince) so easily even though the crown prince had indirectly killed his entire family.

The title don't sound promising but istg the plot is extremely promising. Did not regret reading this out of pure curiousity due to the weird title hahaha. I LOVE LOVE the ML so much. Sooooooooo devoted and doting and smart. I also liked how the MC is not some kind of pure hearted and kind person that would just simply forgive someone even if they did something wrong. It was so refreshing to read and cunning and morally grey character :> I love how he cared more about his loved... more>> ones much more than the other random humans and don't mind 'hurting' them to protect his loved ones!

Not much misunderstandings and everything felt very out in the open. Communication was also there so the story really didn't feel suffocating to me. Great read and highly recommended :)) <<less

A really kiss worthy Slow Romance novel. Chef's kiss 😘

If you want to read a really good slow Romance with proper development that is consensual and have healthy green flag ML with little bit of angsty, drama and interesting well written Characters.... come here.

Warning!!! MC is a bad bit*h villain that is petty and hold grudge even for the smallest thing, so some of you might not like him but for me, I like how he was not white washed like other Villain MCs that are Good. Though... more>> a lot of his actions have proper reason behind it but he's definitely still a Villain to Core.

ML is my favorite here. He's such an interesting and entertaining Character making me smile and look forward to him trying to be salted fish. I find his personality very charming despite him just being salted fish. Also love how he feel very relatable and give casual common people vibe. Plus He's such a decent Green Flag ML and very supportive to MC.

Love the communication between MC and ML.

This also has some really heartbreaking moments like ML's death. Even though I knew he would die and return back to MC in another body and I was prepared for it, I still f*cking cried..... so prepare some tissues too.

ML's 1st death kind of had deep impact on me. I was very prepared for his death but then the author had to make moment so heartbreaking. If he had just died I would have been ok but before he died, MC wore the wedding dress as ML always wanted to see it but then MC finds that ML lost his vision and couldn't see him....... I am not crying. ML apology for not being able to keep living on and wanting to rest...... who the hell cutting onion!!!

Seriously ML first death had bigger impact on me than his second death but his second death was also so heart wrenching, Mixed with MC's reaction.

As for OG gong and OG shou of the novel. I hate the OG gong but I can't bring myself to hate OG shou. Well, I do hate his weak Character but he...... I just feel so pity for him and just want him to have better.

A fantastical novel paired with an excellent translator!

I'll be the first to admit that rebirth / reincarnation (or body-hopping) are definitely my biases.

This story has all of the things I love:

    • No info-dumps; limited 3rd person perspective
    • Mysteries that maintain a wonderful level of tension throughout the story all the way to the end
    • Subtlety in the writing; it doesn't lack descriptions, but also doesn't overly state the obvious or prescribe to the reader every little reaction; many things rely on inference and reading between the lines
    • Layered in the angst/drama; the characters are not melodramatically crying every other chapter, but you feel their deep pain and it's delicious in the contrast
    • Dimensional characters, supporting characters, and villains (except in the first part, the first part cannon-fodder villains are idiots but oh well)
    • Good balance of fluff, humor, and seriousness; serious moments are balanced with the story not taking itself too seriously and even things that can break the 4th wall a bit (modern slangs, euphemisms, etc.)
    • Wonderful relationship development between the main leads; main leads are definitely OP but written in weirdly relateable ways, especially the "modern day" transmigrator ML who too much like "boy-next-door/lazy-ass" even if he's a genius

This was so much better than anything I had expected it to be! A smart, cunning and vicious MC, a gentle, not s*upid, and not a red flag ML (gosh he is so good), a villain who is actually intelligent and poses as a real obstacle in the life of the main characters and political intrigues. And so much more. I can't tell you how much of a pleasant surprise it was.

MC

From reading the synopsis, I expected him to be gentle and kind (cause I had been reading other novels... more>> with MCs like that). But he was different and not in a bad way. Unlike other OP MCs, he isn't someone who can do anything he wants and shine and slap everyone's faces. He has limits. He wants to kill people who have caused him even the slightest annoyance. (And he actually does). He is so petty. He is a doctor who's proficient in poison. He just wants to be a doctor and be treated greatly by the people around him. He wants fame and glory. And after the ML, he just wants to live a nice and peaceful life with him. He deserves it so much after all he had to go through in the story. Now on the beautiful aspect of him. In other novels, I feel like the MC being godly beautiful is just like extra. It makes things easier for them and causes the Mls to in love with them more quickly. But in this novel, because the author of the world the MC lives in has canonically deemed him as the most beautiful, it has only brought him more and more troubles.

But he is not gonna ruin his face and cause himself pain just because some disgusting people like his face. He will just kill them. (Which he did).

ML

He is so good. I feel so bad for him. He was just a teenager who had transmigrated into this ancient world. He just wants to be a salted fish. Yet he is forced to become a sickly young master who is in constant pain all time and on the verge of death, A general who has the lives of thousands of soldiers on his shoulders and an emperor who is the ruler and the son of heaven. I support him being a salted fish. He is such a sweetheart. If his mother hadn't forced him to learn all the things he would have never survived in the world.

Couple

This was such a slow burn. Like it was in the second marriage that they started dating and considered each other as proper romantic interests. And it was good. Watching how the MC slowly started to involve the ML in his plans and considered him his confidant who knew him most deeply and saw how cruel and vicious he is and fell in love with that part of him. They didn't kiss until like 70 chapters. There was also an s*x scene but it was kinda brief. I love how the MC was the one who initiated it. You don't really find that all that often. These are such couple goals.

The villain

The main villain for most of the story is the crown prince. He is the protagonist of the world along with his shadow guard being the other protagonist. Their love story is that of a substitute and white moonlight one. The crown prince was really difficult to defeat. He was in a position of much more power than the protagonists. He wanted the MC to himself because the MC looked like his white moonlight. It was also how The MC died in the original book. He ate the poison he prepared for the crown prince himself after his mu*der attempt was stopped by the shadow guard.

The deaths

I was don't the verge of tears both times the ML was going to die. Although I know it still didn't stop it from being so sad.

And I am really tired from writing this. I will update it again after the main story is finished. And maybe once more after the extras are completely translated. <<less

I love the angst. No, it's not a devastating angst but as you know, the ML dies twice and I love seeing the MC's reaction to ML's death. He was unfazed at first but without knowing, he suddenly felt heartbroken that ML isn't by his side anymore. And, ML is a super greenflag 😣❤️ They are both greenflag to each other and both have blackening tendencies and they both love it LOL. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! MTL IS READABLE ❤️❤️

one of my favourites!! Ive reread this about 3 times already, the MC and ML are so sweet. I absolutely love how morally gray they both are, lin qingyu is so badass. I love the way he acts so spoiled in front of the ml, but the ML loves it ahh they are so sweet q_q

the ML is the embodiment of the phrase 'happy wife, happy life'. Hes so down bad for qingyu I love it so much. The ML is extremely devoted to the MC.

this story is so sweet,... more>> I loved the chapters with just their daily lifes inbetween plot-heavy chapters, not once did I feel bored reading this, every single chapter is extremely well-written and entertaining!

this novel also has pretty good angst, made me cry.

i also loved the extras ! Especially when qingyu wakes up in the modern world, this novel has one of the best extras ive read in danmeis.

This was one of the first danmei that I have ever read and I think that was unfortunate, because it really set the standards for all the future danmeis that I have (tried to) read.

This story is so impressive. I read it months ago and to this day I am still searching for a similar masterpiece. The plot & romance balance was just perfect. It left me with no questions and I was satisfied with everything. In fact, it only left me with warm and fuzzy feelings in my heart.... more>> The writing is so impactful and descriptive that the firt death of the ML really left me bawling my eyes and even the second death made me weep a little.

The closure of everything, was just so insanely amazing, I'm still stunned months after I finished reading. The ML is an overall green flag as well and I love that the MC didn't fade under the gong and become 'weak' or fragile and instead only became more powerful and confident.

I think my only complaint is that I didn't get to see my favorite character more, which was that shadow gaurd, I feel like he desrved a lot better. My boy did nothing wrong! F that previous emperor, I don't even care that the original story had a happy end for them, it wasn't happy in my eyes and I love my boy so much... wuwuwu I wish he got some closure too. <<less

From the title alone, Lu Wan Cheng's death was imminent but the whole build up was very well written. He has such a bright personality that you would really grow to love more and more. Even MC who was unwilling to marry him at first softened for him.

From not caring about his own life, to struggling to stay alive just for Lin Qing Yu. My heart was so touched. I like his little surprises, his quirks and him teaching Lin Qing Yu all the modern lingos. I loved every moment of their interactions. Bi Ka Bi's poetic writings were beautiful too.

The extras are long but interesting as it's when Lin Qing Yu transmigrate to the modern world. It was hilarious and light hearted. I picked up this novel not expecting much since it was historical and I've not read such long historical novel for a long time. I was afraid it would be dry. However this turn out to be a real gem and I even went ahead to listen to the AD which is just as good! <<less

I don't understand why some people saying it's over rated.

The MC, at first I also feel like he's too cold/cruel but, you'll realize that he's not.

ML is perfect. I can't remember anything bad about him.

I want to later address some weird, misguided pity regarding the Fourth Prince and Xi Rong that some reviewers here (who admittedly didn't read the novel properly but based their opinions on hearsay), but here's my review first:

Overall, it was a satisfying and enjoyable read. The plot wasn't really complex and was more character-focused which I enjoyed a lot. The ML is really likeable but the MC might not be for everyone. I personally like that the MC/shou is proactively vengeful and not a weakling who relies on the gong... more>> for everything. It's mostly well-paced and the side characters are also likable, though most don't contribute much to the story. The main focus is the main couple so the plot mostly revolves around them. My only gripe in the story is probably just how everyone just seems to trust the National Teacher and his predictions unconditionally lol

A heads up for potential new readers:

- Don't read the official synopsis. It's a spoiler.

- Do not read if you prefer very heavily angsty stories or plots that have a lot of intrigue and twists and turns. The story is simple and the main conflict of the novel is just how the main couple can end up freely living their life in peace and with no threats, dealing with said threats, and the issue regarding

ML's soul. It's a rare novel where the transmigrator is not the main POV/MC.

- MC is vindictive and petty only towards those who have wronged or wish to harm him or the ML. The translators at CG also point out this fact very early on, and explain why they act the way they do. That's the point of his character - he does not forgive easily.

Now, to address the comments regarding Xi Rong and the Fourth Prince. This involves some spoilers but here's a basic TLDR if you don't want to be completely spoiled:

- The reviews weirdly frame Xi Rong as a victim when he's actually a villain who deserved what MC did to him at the end.

- It is a fact the Fourth Prince was good-looking but knew nothing about politics and wasn't cunning at all - meaning although it isn't his own fault, he'll inevitably be used as a puppet by those close to him.

- The MC and ML's dynamics are written as a subversion of the original novel's protagonists, the Crown Prince and his shadow guard.

Now here's a more detailed explanation (MAJOR spoiler warning) :

Spoiler

Xi Rong (the Fourth Prince's maternal half-brother who at that time had already ascended the throne as emperor), colluded with the enemy, endangering his own country and leading to the second death of the ML in battle. Why? Because his ambitious, paranoid eunuch ass could not fathom how the MC and the ML, powerful as they are, actually do not have the desire to take control of the throne, so he was overly mistrustful of them. Meanwhile, MC and ML just wanted to live peacefully and spend their days together as salted fish. It was also reasonable for MC to let the Empress Dowager somewhat have a say in governing because the Fourth Prince, although good-natured, knows absolutely nothing about governing. Xi Rong also saw them as a threat because he himself wished to run the country for his brother in the shadows. He loves his younger brother, yes, but it's also a fact that the Fourth Prince knew nothing about governing or politics, and he himself was ambitious. MC did not even want to harm the Fourth Prince but Xi Rong had to ruin things for everyone. In the end, MC let the Fourth Prince live and merely confined him somewhere. MC knew it wasn't his fault, but what MC did to Xi Rong was extremely justified.

And regarding the shadow guard, even if the Crown Prince didn't kill his family, he was still absolutely sh*t towards the shadow guard, treated him like a doormat and did nothing to prevent the emperor from slaughtering the shadow guard's family and faction because of his ambition. In the original novel, the shadow guard ends up forgiving the Crown Prince he says one cringe line and not even uttering a single line of apology. MC berates the shadow guard a few times because of this and urges him to have some self-respect. Was it cruel of MC to lie to the shadow guard who regarded him as a friend? Maybe. But at that point because of the shadow guard's weakness, MC could not consider him as one of his people because he could still betray him for the Crown Prince. MC does end up considering him as a friend in the end though and admits that he lied.

Also, the reviewer forgets, or probably hadn't read that MC gave the shadow guard the medicine that could fake death so of course the Crown Prince was alive at the end. Unlike in the novel, the Crown Prince gave up his ambition to be with the shadow guard and now has to try to make up for his mistakes and earn back the shadow guard's affection.

That's actually a pretty good novel! I had put this novel off time adn time again because I wasn't sure about what to expect. But Oh!! This is better than I expected. It's a fun novel with really really cute concept and very strong courageous main CP. I live for characters like MC and don't worry about the part of him remarrying different bodies and what other people think, everything is written so good and MC won't fall into disadvantage. Even after succesffuly marrying the prince, the people coulldn't do... more>> anything as the ML is just that willful!!!

This is really good and I long to read more novels like this, the MC and ML bounces back immediately after suffering a letdown though they don't really suffer much as they're very capable on their own!!
