Jiang Si originally thought that she would marry her childhood sweetheart, her third cousin, and live in harmony with him. Unexpectedly, they were separated forever.

With her crippled legs, she married her strange eldest cousin under the sympathetic eyes of everyone.

It is said that Pei Jue, the Pei Mansion’s eldest son, is frigid, arrogant, lonely, and attractive. He must have felt sorry for her to accept the marriage.

Jiang Si agreed with it and did not want to be a shackle dragging down others, so she intentionally composed a divorce letter and pressed her handprint, waiting for the ideal moment to pack up and depart.

One day she finally saw the eldest son, who was rumored to be respectable and dignified, arrive at her door late at night. He pulled out the rumpled divorce letter and called her with a raspy voice: cousin —

It seems like the novel's premise was promising, but there was too much intrigue early on, making it challenging to stay engaged. The book is supposed to be a love story, but unfortunately, the text is dominated by mystery, intrigue, and drama, overwhelming the plot development. The love story feels like an afterthought.

For instance, in the early chapters 1-22, there is no text describing the male lead's thoughts or actions leading up to the marriage and the female lead's rescue from Zhou Meng. Instead, the text is dedicated to elaborating... more>> a lot of mystery, intrigue, and drama, throwing out more questions and providing very confusing clues and motives with no relevance to the romantic development of the characters.

Spoiler

Here are some of the questions raised:

- Why does the female lead’s (FL) mother favor the older daughter and not the FL?

- Why was the original fiancee killed?

- What is the Pei family secret that caused the FL’s mother-in-law to be punished so severely by the father-in-law?

- What did the FL’s older sister do to cause the death of the original fiancee that the FL’s mother worried the Pei family would retaliate?

- Why did Zhou Meng kidnap the older sister and try to kill the FL?

- Was Zhou Meng a bandit, a spy trying to steal the bow the FL made for her deceased father, or a dishonorably discharged soldier related to the Zhou Aunt, mother of the love-lorn cousin of the FL?

- Why did the Jiang cousin delay the FL’s rescue and try to seduce the male lead?

- Why does the Zhou aunt suddenly have so much money?

Additionally, several of the chapter links are broken or are behind a paywall. I tried to track down the raw text by searching for the original title. In the end, I found out that it’s a happy ending, but the drama is too exaggerated, making it a less pleasant read. <<less
