Professor System has issued a mission: to rescue the gentle, kind and tragic protagonist shou of the novel “The Exceptional Furnace”.

Song ‘Scholar-Tyrant’ Qingshi: “Don’t worry, Professor! I can definitely ensure the patient’s recovery!”

In the Immortal Realm:

Song Qingshi praised from the bottom of his heart: “My patient is the kindest and most beautiful little angel in the world.”

Yue Wuhuan quietly washed the blood from his hands and smiled softly: “En.”

Song Qingshi swore from the bottom of his heart: “As a doctor, I will never covet nor take advantage of my beautiful patient!”

Yue Wuhuan took full and complete advantage of the doctor and smiled softly: “En.”

Song Qingshi affirmed from the bottom of his heart: “Under my loving care, the patient will never be blackened!”

Yue Wuhuan secretly hid his monstrously evil thoughts and smiled softly: “En.”

At that inextinguishable summit, upon thousand and thousands of soul lamps, he sat on the god’s throne of white bone, guarding that piece of stone.

“You are the only one in this world who treats me tenderly.”

“And so, you are the only one I treat tenderly.”

Scholar-tyrant Song was absolutely delighted: “Professor! Can I get full marks?”

Professor System exploded: “You fool! You saved the wrong person!”

This novel is something else. I dare say it is one of the finest and most emotionally tormenting healing novels I've ever read to date.

The story is interesting and fun—the kind of fun that always keeps you on edge, knowing that the storm is coming, despite everyone laughing rainbow and sunshine.

Haha, I've lost count of how many times I've cried over it. When the characters are sad, I cry. When they're happy, I still cry. I was so depressed, but I still couldn't help but love it. At one point,... more>> I didn't even care about the writing style, the plot, or the pacing. I just want to silently read and pray for everyone to be happy, and it's fortunate that it has a happy ending (not that the story is lacking in those aspects, it's just that my emotions prevailed 😢).

Please, someone help me send the best male lead-abusing novel award to the author. He or she deserves it.

I can see why some readers might not be thrilled with the MC at first, though. In any case, he starts off seeming like a typical innocent white lotus; looking pure, dense, and clueless. But trust me, he's not. Don't look at him being an angel on normal days; in fact, he is one of the most intimidating entities in the story and can actually kill without even blinking an eye. His character is the most interesting, and his growth is the best among all the characters present.

Spoiler

Watching him persistently choose the ML, even though he is the wrong choice, really tugs at my heartstrings. I was so heartbroken. That's real love right there. 😭

[collapse]

Right, my advice if you are going to read this novel is to please read it until the end*.

The story was intricately and meticulously woven. Every bit of foreshadowing and all the small, seemingly insignificant actions in this novel are there for a reason. Together with the small details the author has put in along the way, you can tell the author poured a lot of thought and effort into it, and I'm super appreciative of that.

And although the possibility is almost zero, I still want to read more about the kid who went off to learn craftsmanship and his friends in the medicinal village. Their relationships are really pure and sweet. I wish them all a successful, happy, long life! 🥲 <<less

First of all, the translation was fabulous!

Second of all, I was discouraged reading the novel when I saw a review describing the MC as a useless boi but then I gave it a try, and all of the sudden I fell in love with the MC's character!

Moving on...

ML has yandere tendencies but trust me. He never does anything to hurt MC.

This novel make me empty an entire tissue box, I cried a lot.

and please read the whole thing to understand why Song Qingshi has -999 EQ

But there are some parts of it that I don't agree with and feel frankly disgusted by. This is not about only this story in particular, but most BL. Just in this story, after they had discussed and analyzed how s*xual relationships are painful for the "receiver" they still went on and did it.

Unfortunately when two men decide to have s*xual relationships that involve penetration s*x one of the two will suffer (the exact grade of suffering will change depending on various factors, but they will still feel pain). This is certainly frustrating I imagine, but it can be circumvented by using different ways to have s*xual relationships. Of course, if they both decide that they want penetrative s*x then they should have that choice too and there is nothing wrong with this.

What makes me angry, disgusted and scared is that in this kind of stories (every asian BL I have ever read or heard of and good part of western too) the two halves of the couple have very clear and specified roles. They never change their ways, the one who has to suffer will always suffer and the other one won't even think that this is wrong, they never even ask to switch.

When I say that this makes me scared I mean that after reading of the ML waiting 3000 years for the one he loves he still happily chooses to ignore his pain in bedroom matters. If this is love then how can he stand seeing the one he loves hurting and he himself the cause of his pain and DO NOTHING?

Ok, the ML is traumatized, it is completely understandable that he doesn't want to "receive" anymore. But even knowing that the gentlest of handling still results in lacerations (and Qingshi clearly stated he had some lacerations) he still caves pretty soon and does it anyway. And proceeds to continue doing so. Without ever switching.

I will say this again, the ML was traumatized and he couldn't bear being the receiver. Ok. But if he never had to do it again then why did the original protagonist of the story Bai something have to keep doing that?

Protagonist Bai had been r*ped and traumatized at a lesser degree than the ML, but damn, he was mentally scarred when he was freed! His self worth was dead decomposing in a ditch. And since he isn't the ML the one who is supposed to be his soulmate, the peacock, still made him the receiver in every single one of their encounters! He clearly stated that it was painful and the other kept wanting to try again saying that it would get better with practice! After all he had been through!

Why did he have to keep doing this and the ML no?!

Did they never hear of switching? Or respect?!

Is this love? I really hope not. I want to believe that love is when you would never hurt the other and the other would be the same. If someone has to suffer then they will together.

Sorry for the rant. This is a good story compared to many others so I gave it the 5 stars, but it broke my heart that after analyzing so much the situation, the power imbalance in the relationships and how the receiver has to feel pain they went just over it and kept the status quo of every other asian BL I have ever read. This can't be what love is.

*For who says that Quingshi didn't feel pain: he said after the first time that it didn't hurt as much as he expected, he also clearly stated that he had lacerations. This was said by someone who worked and behaved perfectly fine while his Nascent soul was breaking. Nobody ever even saw a shadow of his pain, this doesn't mean that there wasn't.

I finally finished reading it

At first, I read this because Chrysanthemum Garden is the one translating it, and I believe they always choose a good novel. And I love the fated lovers tag and the synopsis

The ending is so heartwarming and wholesome, but the road to the happy ending is so heartbreaking and tear jerking. This is the kind of story that can ab*sed readers, but in the end, can also give us sweet, and make the sweet ending more sweeter than anything <<less

Okay, I started this novel with high expectations because they sold it to me as a plot different from the clichés, but I was totally deceived, at least our main couple is completely within the cliché, I can even mention several other works with a similar plot, but I don't want to compare anything.

ML had s*xual experiences like Shou, which I find sickening since it was literally s*xual ab*se, not an experience

Otherwise, in main terms, it's all a common plot

What I would really like to mention as being extremely good and made me emotional is the relationship between the MC and An Long, I'm not talking about the ship, love triangle, etc., I'm talking about how An Long has such an interesting subplot and the camaraderie between him and the MC, I found this really out of the cliché, I hate love triangles but I'm pleased with how the author paved the way for the two

Honestly, if it were just for the romance, I would have dropped this novel at chapters 40/60, but because of how An Long's plot messed with the plot, I decided to continue. Even so, my rating for this novel is low, because I don't see why it's so overrated <<less

good story, good characters, way too stressful for my liking.

Spoiler

somebody recommended this to me when I asked for stories similar to fish danmei and I want to strangle them to death. This story was way too traumatic with stuff that hit too close to my own personal experiences but the characters and the dynamic between song qingshi and yue wuhuan was too good to skip out on. I guess the only dissatisfaction I had was that their dynamic changed a lot after the first time skip, and couldn't help but feel like the final versions of their selves felt like different people (which made sense bcs they're literally gods) but still. I loved song qingshi for his autistic self and loved yue wuhuan and his nihilistic view of the world (probably me self projecting kshshs)

Saw numerous reviews complaining about MC's "cluelessness", and my view of him is: whether intentional or not, the author made MC very much on the spectrum. He may inherently have a harder time understanding people and social situations, but the most important part (and my favorite part about him) is that he makes an effort to learn and always tries to put himself in others' shoes.

I feel like the author really grasps the psychology of the characters and successfully portrays realistic manifestations of trauma and the difficult process of healing.... more>> Love and support from others is imperative, but healing is ultimately the responsibility of the one traumatized, as unfair as it is. There will be flare-ups and seemingly endless layers to unpack, but in the right environment it's possible to break through. One of my favorite aspects of this novel is how MC gives ML kindness and forgiveness but doesn't teach him to be kind or forgiving. When someone is taught to tolerate anything done to them, learning not to forgive is learning that they have an existence worth treasuring. ML's resentment is particularly violent since this is a fictional world where the rules are more brutal, but the general message is still really nice to see.

Overall, I really enjoyed the characters and the world and would urge people who might find the characters frustrating at first to look at them with an open mind. <<less

don't worry, it's not a love triangle. I was afraid of love triangles while reading because growing up, movies with love triangles were too popular and traumatized me. Plus, I am a crybaby, so it would break my heart knowing one of the three is getting hurt. But I am glad I didn't drop the novel; there is a reason why the third guy has the obsession toward MC, and we get answers later on and it's not bec of love

A good story, not lighthearted and the tragedy tag is there for a reason but it’s HE. Skipped like 50 ch because it was a bit too real for my tastes lol, especially with all the ab*se and it’s psychological consequences. Well portrayed characters, interesting plot, good ending, would have deserved another 10 chapters of extras but it’s easy to imagine their forever HE anyway. Recommend

I came into this novel excited to read it. And it really didn't disappoint. If you're looking for a lot of politics, very complicated storylines, red herrings, this isn't a good novel for you. If you're looking for STRONG character development and growth, characters you can care about, and that really strong love feeling, I suggest checking this novel out.

This is a very unique take on the genre. Without getting into too many details, the author did a great job to express trauma without making it explicit. Showing how characters... more>> handle or don't handle said trauma. I really enjoyed that you could see the struggle of certain characters to grow and WHY. That's what was important to me. I wanted to know why X and Y changed so slowly. The author does great at making me feel like I can really interpret the character well, all while keeping me intrigued.

If you're looking for a light read, give this one a chance. It's very cute. But (at least for me) there were some tears involved. Nothing hardcore like other novels, but enough to keep me emotionally in check. This is one of those novels that I wish had gone longer because I just wanted more. <<less

Unless you've read this until the very end, I don't think you have the right to rate the story.

I'm not saying it's something you HAVE to read but to fully understand why things happen and make a proper critique, you have to reach the end because all of the plot points get tied there, not throughout the story but AT THE END.

That's why to objectively rate this, you have to, unfortunately, or fortunately, finish this first.

This is one of the few stories where the ending MATTERS the most and EXPLAINS all the plot you might have questioned while reading.

Not as good as hyped, not as bad/traumatic as some say.

Someone said it was like "Legendary Masters Wife", it's not. So much N.O.T.

I'll try to explain my not so enthusiastic 3 star review.

  • Disjointed storyline
  • "Foreshadowing"
  • MC/ML no communication
  • 2d characters especially side ones.
Before I start about my above named problems with this novel, I want to say something about the "ab*se" in this story. Ppl seem to be afraid of this part. There will be no live ab*se or detailed description. So I might be blunted cause it's not my first hero... more>> that suffered but if you are like me christened by books like Sherrilyn Kennyons Acheron, then this is child s play. This made it through censorship... so nothing really gonna happen.

About the storyline.... this writer has a fable for the easy way out... why explain and work hard if your MC simply can fall in a coma/dissappear/cultivate for years and let the others face the problems. As soon he appears again he is rich, has everything he wants and only needs to live a good live. So you have to bear a string of blackouts, recap of some highlights, blackout, recap and so on...10 years, 3000 years... why troubling themselves. This destroys the flow like he'll. And if it's not a blackout, then it is a mysterious item that gives highlights of another live... I felt like did they do anything in the present? I think the writer had some plan but wasn't able to implement it smoothly and thinks the reader dumb enough that they can simply brush over it.

This brings me to the next point: Foreshadowing. There are novels that put in so subtle Foreshadowing that you only get it when the actual deed happens or even only when you read the story a second time... this is not such a beauty. This novel gives hints with a blunt bat and dragging you to the hint pushing your nose into it and screaming at you "H.I.N.T! Understand it! I'm so awesome!". Zero suspense.

About the MC and ML... sigh. It could have been so good. MC is set up as a high level scholar/medic with social anxiety. Basically he burrows in at home and reads or does experiments. ML was set up with that tragic background, had some suicidal thoughts (for 4 chaps or so) and its sooooo hard for him to overcome his past. MC tries to heal MLs psychological Problems.... but no, not with speaking about the problem or actual communication. No he simply endulged him in everything and help him kill off his offenders by researching powerful poison. And while he is out of order for years on end he let's his patient fend for himself and somehow enrich MC and find lots of treasures. So to be honest I don't see any healing in this story. It's another brush over that's solved with that ridiculous ending.

The side characters... the writer started up so good but all of them fizzled out fast. Especially the great love rival... the writer started in a comment he would have a good ending... yeah no. I wouldn't call it a good ending. I felt far more sorrow for that guy then the ab*sed ML. There were a lot of characters that were thrown in and I really wanted to see their development and then they were already thrown to the side as unimportant. just paper cutouts to enlarge the cast.

The idea of this novel was good but how it came out doesn't suit me. I found it boring and annoying. <<less

This is another one of those stories where the summary doesn't even come close to what the story is. To explain it would give too much away. Just consider it the story of how a stubborn stone can change the course of a river.

There is a wonderful variety of characters here, very nice to see so many varied personalities (and strong women not all green tea b*tches). The author put together a very definitive plot arc and stuck to it (check the author's note near the end of arc 1... more>> for details) which keeps the plot together and moving without digressions. I know some people like side stories so they can see more of the characters but I love stories where the characters and story act together and stay on track. I can always re-read a good story, and I'm keeping this one on my list! <<less

It was four very emotional days while I was reading this story. I loved it from the first sight and mtl'ed to the end (mtl is very clean, had almost no problem with it). The story is so rich and powerful; it starts as hurt/comfort, then it's a love story, then it's a story of a soul and of the world, with gods and demons, but in the end it's still a love story, pure and beautiful.

The MC is incredibly loveable from the start, but as the story goes on... more>> and I learned more things about him, I fell in love with him even more and more, he's so precious. The final revelation about him was so touching. The ML is glorious. He is very traumatized (actually, most characters suffer from trauma in the book) but he was noble even in his blackening. With so many stories where yandere-ML r*pes the MC, it was absolutely refreshing to read the one without this trope. I loved An Long, I actually wouldn't mind reading more about him. And Bai Zihao's story is perfect, too.

There are many funny moments in the book, many heartbreaking moments and many cathartic moments. I laughed and cried when reading it, and I'll keep love for many characters of the story in my heart forever. <<less

CRY CRY CRYYYYY. I CANNOT! It's so angsty and heart wrenching. Plot wise it's perfect! Good! Interesting!! But then the angsty plot is real traumatising. Like I have read plenty of traumatising novels but this one is definitely one of the top most traumatising novels hahaha.

But their romamce is also very intense. It's giving Hua Cheng and Xie Lian (TGCF) vibes. Devoted, possesive, intense love. The MC is so native it's to the point where I question if a robot can understand another human better. The ML also makes me want to crash out every time he starts his weird monologue of self-pitying and s*xual thoughts on the MC. Warning for those that don't read the tags like me. ML's back story is tragic with s*xual ab*se. If that bothers you, the translator was kind enough to put in a summary for those that are squeamish about those kinds of topics if the chapters contain it at the beginning of those chapters.

One of the things I like about this story is how fairytale-like this story is. It starts out like a grimtale with how tragic it starts out but everyone gets their happily ever after in the end.

The other... more>> thing that I absolutely love about this story is how the author does not shy away from the various mental health problems the main characters have. And not just shy away but actually show that there are steps to recovery be it being on the spectrum or trauma. As someone who likes to thinks they're are sound of mind in these trying times, there's a sense of appreciation in seeing two characters supporting one another through their flaws. While us normies like to say the good and justice out our mouths, it's another to actually do the good and justice. Even without reading the comments, I can already see some people complaining about the MC being emotionally dumb.

That's part of his character. That's consistent throughout the story. And MC does eventually become somewhat emotionally competent, if only for those that he loves. And that's his character growth!! At the end of the story, there's even a reason why he's emotionally dumb and it makes sense!

And unfortunately, that's as far as I'm willing to go when it comes to gushing about the characters. MC and ML's personalities are pretty much the whole story. Yes there's external plot but the whole point of this story is how the main characters grow as people and how they make each other better throughout their flaws. Anymore and it's just spoilers.

Once more, this is a tragedy with a happily ever after. If you're looking for actions and adventure, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. There's a little of it but it's not centered on it. This is more like a merry-go-round of emotions that won't quite make you cry, but make you think about the mental crisis that's going on around you.

There's a level of emotional maturity for you to have to properly appreciate a story like this. This is my 2nd time reading this and I can definitely say I wasn't the 1st time just because this wasn't the kind of story I wanted to read at the time. I still loved it, but I didn't fully appreciate the acknowledgement of the character's mental crisis and how the characters grew from it. I wasn't in the headspace for that. But reading this a 2nd time around, knowing what I was getting into, I can definitely say this story fully deserves the 5 stars I'm giving it. <<less
