After the daughter of the former mistress of the Jing’an Marquis’s residence, Wen Zhuojin, fell from grace and lost all support after her uncle’s family declined, the engagement with the heir of the Rongguo Duke’s residence was snatched away by her stepsister.

After the broken engagement, rumors spread that Wen Zhuojin, who was said to be in mourning at home, disguised herself and went to a brothel in the western market of Yun Jing City. There, she bought the freedom of a young courtesan, taking her in and treating her like a precious jewel at a house she had prepared for her outside.

The world believed that the engagement had been stolen from Wen Zhuojin, but in fact, it was a marriage she had long wanted to cancel.

This was because Wen Zhuojin did not like men; she loved women, especially beautiful, mature women older than herself.

The beautiful woman she brought home perfectly met her criteria.

To support her lover, Wen Zhuojin worked hard in business, spending more on her lover’s clothes and living expenses than the courtiers in the palace.

However, Wen Zhuojin could not openly give her lover a formal title, which made her feel guilty toward her.

When she entered the palace to meet with the nobility, hoping to spend a fortune to secure a title for her beloved, Wen Zhuojin came face to face with the current Princess Royal.

The Princess Royal wore a hibiscus crown and a black and blue ceremonial robe, holding a dust whisk. Her demeanor was as cold as a snow-capped mountain, exuding aloof elegance and an unworldly air.

It was said that at the age of fifteen, the Princess Royal had helped her younger brother ascend the throne, quelled rebellions, subdued neighboring nations, and ruled decisively. She wielded unparalleled power and commanded universal reverence.

She was also the woman Wen Zhuojin feared most.

While everyone else knelt in respect, Wen Zhuojin stood frozen, trembling, staring in shock at the Princess.

Who could tell her why the Princess looked exactly like her delicate and helpless lover sister?!

***

At the age of twenty, Princess Royal Yan Qinglan took her vows as a Taoist nun, swearing never to marry. She never expected that, at twenty-six, she would be poisoned, lose her sight, and be sweetly coaxed by a soft-voiced girl who brought her home.

At that time, Yan Qinglan was trapped in a predicament. When she approached the girl, she noticed that the girl’s faint fragrance eased the pain of her poison flare-ups. She decided to follow the girl home to see what she was up to.

The girl indeed had intentions for Yan Qinglan—but not the kind Yan Qinglan imagined.

Exquisite meals, fine clothes, and extravagant luxury surrounded her. Within days, Princess Yan Qinglan was pampered, becoming even softer and more delicate, her beauty becoming truly unmatched.

And all the girl asked for in return was—

“Sister, kiss me.”

“Sister, hug me.”

“Sister, cuddle me.”

The sweet voice, with a tone of coquettishness, whispered and enticed her every day.

Slowly, Princess Yan Qinglan began to yearn for it. Even after her sight was restored, she continued to be the girl’s “concubine” while stirring up the political scene, vying for power and influence.

***

Wen Zhuojin, upon realizing that Princess Yan Qinglan and her beautiful sister were the same person, packed her things and fled overnight. But before she could leave the city gates, she was surrounded by the Imperial Guard.

Looking at the woman she once teased to tears and coaxed into embarrassing acts, now brimming with mu*derous intent, Wen Zhuojin was petrified.

“Ah Zhuo, if you leave, who will be my Empress?”

Just as Wen Zhuojin thought her life was over, Yan Qinglan suddenly embraced her and whispered in her ear—

The protagonist, Wen Zhuojin, is one of the most compelling characters I've found in a novelupdates story. She's talented, smart, generous and incredibly devoted to the female lead, Yan Qinglan. And yet, I can still believe she's just a young woman, if a very capable one. She can be too idealistic, especially for a lesbian in a culture where she's expected to marry a man, which she has really only evaded so far because of luck and a lot of hard work. She's a little bit too obsessed with the... more>> FL—you can tell this is a child's first love in the way she absolutely showers her with compliments, gifts and affection. And she's very naive, sometimes putting her trust in the wrong people or at least in their common decency, which is never more obvious than with...

Yan Qinglan, in sharp and unfortunate contrast to our likeable protagonist, is one of the most ungrateful, shameless and manipulative romantic interests I have ever seen. She has a sad and sympathetic story, certainly, and I can understand the mistrust she has for Wen Zhuojin initially. But at some point, I started to wonder what she even brings to the relationship. She lies to her constantly: about her identity, including the danger she's putting her in by being there; about her goals, which is completely unnecessary giving how far the girl is willing to go for her; she even lies about her marital status. It feels like the only reason she hasn't left her yet is because of Wen Zhuojin's medical knowledge and wealth, which she needs to fund her army and obtain vengeance (and yes, the girl is such a simp she invests in anything her lover tells her to lol). Every time Wen Zhuojin does something sweet, she's met with suspicion and disdain. Even when she's not doing anything, Yin Qinglan hears some rumor and immediately assumes the worst of her and gets offended on her own. The latest chapter I've read (67) is the most egregious example of this, I'll leave a summary for those who don't mind spoilers:

Spoiler

She sees Wen Zhuojin preparing a wedding dress and hears a rumor from her loyal subject/friend (that she meets behind her lover's back, of course) that her cousin plans to propose to her, so she assumes it's for him. Wen Zhuojin then catches her in the act and thinks that she's cheating on her with this subordinate. Because she's so deeply hurt by this rumor that she didn't even bother to verify, even though this is far from the first time this has happened, she doesn't deny it and tells her that she wants to leave her. Jokes on her, Wen Zhuojin was preparing a wedding dress because she was planning to propose to her. Not sure what's going to happen next, but I would dump her paranoid ass so fast it would make the Flash look like a chump.

[collapse]

Maybe she gets better. Probably she gets worse. Still, even reading it as somewhat of a tragedy as I am, this is an interesting novel with a good translation quality, so I couldn't give it less than a 5. <<less

This is not as simple as it looks. Here's the things, when it comes to mistaking the princess, there's so much going on on the princess' side. Lots of enemies and betrayal. On Wen Zhuojin's side it's just a girl who's fallen hard and you get all the romance stuff, also lots of bed scenes. I'm on chapter 82, nearly reaching the peak of drama (mostly the enemies.

You won't get bored with this one. It's a good amount of romance and a good amount of action and drama too, not... more>> too confusing, nice and simple enough to figure out the bad guys, now we just wait for our fav characters to do their thing. <<less

I'll keep my review short and nice for this one.

I've been following this story since it had little chapters, and I must say that I really, really enjoy it. This story involves a lot of drama and politics, as well as some business ventures in which our MC would eventually partake. Both of our leads are strong, capable women, and while the misunderstanding between them regarding the female lead's origin has taken this long (it's quite funny, to be honest), I imagine the big reveal would be a sweet read... more>> as I've been looking forward to it for so long.

The story and plot is easy to understand, and the characters are likeable too that you can't help but root for them, and to wish their success. Romance plays a big part in the story too and is often the driving force of at least our MC's character motivations. I've still yet to see the development of our female lead, but it's getting there, and their relationship, as of the chapter I'm reading, has become much warmer in comparison to earlier chapters.

Over-all, a good story with great characters, and an interesting plot of success, betrayal, and reclamation, with a budding romance in the middle of it all to warm up the cold reality these two women face. Very much worth the read, I highly recommend.

4.8/5, round it up to 5/5. <<less
