Ruth Kaizel grew up being looked down upon since childhood because his mother was from a red-light district. He joined the Imperial Knights to run away from those who did not recognize him as a member of his father’s family but eventually became the leader of the knights at a young age due to the power of that same family, despite not being able to free himself from his father’s family no matter where he ran. He found himself serving the royal family as the escort of Crown Prince Ail, who was beautiful and elegant with dazzling red hair but was extremely eccentric and selfish. After some time of being overwhelmed by the young prince, Ail urges Ruth to become his ‘true shield’ in the castle and fight a silent but deadly battle within the palace walls. Due to threats from those close to him, Ruth begins to play the role of a terminally ill lover, while following orders. Fake lovers who started with the purpose of using each other, but ending up in a complicated relationship. Will the only thing left be the pain in their hearts or will they finally feel the joy of freedom?

There's also a Manhwa adaptation of this novel titled, 'Lunacy' which can be found on Lezhin.

The novel follows a main character (MC) born from a noble and prostitute and a male lead (ML) who's born between a king and one of the king's many wives. The MC is born into a family that is the ML's enemy as they seek to take over the kingdom through one of the king's many wives that also gave birth to a son. Compared to the ML, the son (ML's half-brother) is rather timid... more>> and really young.

The MC goes against his father's wishes and joins the imperial knights and is rather really outstanding. The MC is so outstanding that he gets appointed to be the ML's personal guard or knight. There is an 8-year old age gap (I believe, if I remember correctly).

The tags 'Enemies to Lovers' is true as the ML doesn't quite trust the MC given that he is the son of his enemy. However, there was a turning point where the ML learns to trust the MC and they strike a deal.

Below are spoilers regarding the deal:

Spoiler

The deal entails that the MC will act as the ML's fake lover in exchange for the ML calling off his engagement with his current fiancée. MC's friend is in love with ML's current fiancée and she also returns MC's friend's feelings as well.

[collapse]

There are also tags for the ML that one should lookout for such as 'Yandere', 'Manipulative', and 'Possessive'. The ML is all those things as he doesn't understand emotions nor the importance of them.

The ML is manipulative and calculating as he plots most of the traps in hopes of MC falling into them, which MC does. The reason for this is that the MC is rather really honest and kind. He hopes that since the ML is making the deal, he'll abide by it. It's not that the MC is naive. Although, he somewhat is but is also really smart.

Below is spoilers on why he is seen as a yandere and really possessive. Please give this a view as while it does contain spoilers, it also has some dark themes that might not be some people's cup of tea:

Spoiler

Since the ML doesn't understand emotions, he doesn't comprehend that he loves the MC and that what he's feeling is rather jealousy. There was a moment where the ML throws a jealous tantrum and when the MC is called in and picking up glass so that the ML doesn't accidentally step on it, the ML slams his foot down on the MC's hand which then gets pierced by the glass. The ML doesn't relent until the MC cries out in pain. The wound takes longer to heal for the MC's hand as well.

There was also a point in which he traps the MC in his own place which then gets surrounded by guards so that the MC can't escape. During this time, when the MC doesn't want to eat, the ML threatens to cut off the hands of those that either brought in the dishes or cooked up the dishes in an attempt to get MC to eat.

As the novel is also R-18, there are sometimes where the ML sexually assaults the MC which causes him pain in his lower region, causes it to legitimately bleed

[collapse]

However, the reason why I like this novel is due to the ML's growth as a person. ML doesn't understand the importance of emotions but stills caters to the MC if he sees that it's necessary.

Below is an example:

Spoiler

After rescuing the MC from a group assassination, both are injured, with the ML being more critical. The MC and ML are stranded alone and they take this time to talk. The MC then confesses to the ML. The ML then whispers something into the MC's ear (probably 'I love you as well') and they reconcile due to the fact that the ML said it's something he'll say only once. The ML isn't the type to say anything affectionate so doing this shows his sincerity to the MC. He's also the type to go back on his words (the deals he made with MC) but he's never the type of person to lie.

[collapse]

I also really like how the author wrote the MC's person and personality. He's not timid and is the type of person to speak up. He's also really considerate of others. His mentality is 'if I get hurt instead of others, it's okay to get hurt'. Basically, he gets hurt or takes on the pain so that others don't have to, especially if it's his loved ones.

Below is an example:

Spoiler

He could've escaped but he's afraid of implicating his mother and sister to face the ML's wrath.

[collapse]

Basically, this novel is short has a yandere, possessive, and manipulative ML who laters learns to love MC and treasure him. They're both stubborn protagonists but they also learn to talk and figure out what the other really wants. There's growth with the ML which isn't seen in most novels so it was really refreshing and an eye opener to read. The MC isn't also the timid type and he's also really strong and speaks his mind not afraid to confess, hence, I believe this is why the novel was slightly shorter than usual and not dragged out 😅. I also really like the plot as it's about romance between a crown prince and a knight. If you don't mind the some slightly darker themes, they're also really short then I recommend this novel! <<less

This story is really good. It's a story that doesn't drag on. I’ve always liked stories with few chapters but still manage to present complex problems and give a broad explanation of the characters' traits. The characters here also have traits I like, with the ML being possessive, obsessive, and willing to do anything to have the MC. And the MC, who is oblivious yet determined. The MC is self-aware, and even though they’re easy to sway, they still know where they’re headed. And definitely, the MC is not portrayed... more>> as a weak character, like a typical woman. This is the kind of character I enjoy from Korean novels. Honestly, I’m tired of the weak, easily destroyed MCs in Chinese novels. Most Korean novels portray the bottom as manly and independent, and I like that. But there's one thing I regret about this novel. I feel that the resolution of the problems is rushed, and there are some issues that I feel haven’t been fully resolved. But overall, this story is good and recommended. <<less

I came from the manhwa and now reading the novels and seeing more of the crown prince's thoughts. It didn't shock me as much. I was even more confuse to the reaction of people who reads the manhwa.

I mean the title is there already, it's the biggest spoiler. What do you expect from a child born from such an environment where no normal thing happens to him?

His abnormal way of thinking doesn't surprise me but accepting some of his actions is another thing (I mean abusing your lover is def... more>> not okay).

My review might seem like a defense for Ail but I'm just expressing the other side of the story. In the novel, although the crown prince seem to be infinitely decisive and firm, when it comes to Ruth, there would be a hint that he himself is not that sure anymore. He was just convincing himself that things are still under control.

I'm still not that far from the novel but there's a scene where Ail is convincing himself that he can just wait for the fleeting emotions to vanish and Ruth can just go d!e somewhere and then shifts to the part where he secretly visits Ruth every night because he cannot confront the true nature of his feelings.

Nevertheless, Ruth is such a sweet soul. I don't dislike the character of the crown prince so I'm not totally against the idea of them ending up with each other (which is kind of set in a stone in this setting) but Ruth deserves more so I hope Ail develops more of his character somehow. <<less
