During their second-year sports festival, Nishizaki found himself drawn to Nagano, whose unexpected coolness caught his eye. Intrigued, Nishizaki tried to get Nagano’s attention, but the more his usual tactics failed, the more frustrated—and serious—he became about pursuing him.

By the time he managed to win Nagano over, Nishizaki’s own interest had waned, and their fleeting romance came to an abrupt end. Yet, their story didn’t end with high school. Years later, fate brings them back together, forcing them to confront old feelings and navigate a complicated dynamic shaped by their changed circumstances.

For me, the ending of the main story was satisfying enough. Sometimes love stories don’t have happy endings, and not all feelings are reciprocated the way we hope. However, Konohara-sensei chose to revisit this novel and released a sequel. With the doujinshi sequel, Nagano and Nishizaki’s love story found a beautiful conclusion. A little redemption never hurt anyone~ As the translator, I can’t help but feel deeply moved by their journey.

Wow, I am shocked. It was a very good but extremely awful read. If you don't like sad endings, do not read this since it ends extremely sad. The MC is so pathetic I was aggrieved. The ML is so pure, and has a beautiful soul, and even though it was cruel, chose the best choice for himself. I rated a 3, because even though the writing was wonderful and the plot was good, I still felt like there wasn't a purpose to this read other than emotional torture p*rn.... more>> I was hooked because I was wondering how this could possibly end up and if there was even hope for a happy ending, but alas. I guess the moral of the story is don't get involved with the Yakuza. <<less

Might be one of my Konohara faves, especially after having read the extras. This work elicited lots of feelings, which is always good for books. Nishizaki is, more often than not, a snake, a hurting man hurting others to cling onto the illusion of pride at the cost of just about everything. Nagano is a man with a deep sense for justice, to an almost unflexible degree. He is kind and selfless to a fault, especially where Nishizaki is concerned.

Their journey is full of ups and downs. The downs being... more>> low. The main story broke my heart. The ending was so raw I could barely believe it. From the stories I've read, Konohara's books rarely have a downright unhappy ending, but rather one that is ambivalent, melancholic, bittersweet. They feel like healing bruises. This one was more like a flesh wound.

Spoilers for the ending of the main story and extras:

Spoiler

The extras weren't translated when I first read the main story. I just happened to have a spontaneous look here only to see the comments mention the extras. I was a bit apprehensive going in as some claim that Nishizaki was OOC and mellowed out too quickly and abrupt, but having read the extras now I can firmly say that's just not true. A constant in Nishizaki's characterization is his pride born from what happened with his family. His uncle and aunt never cared for him, their wealth was never his. He spent most of his life as a "charity case" (in his eyes) and had to pay dearly for it. With his life going to hell in a handbasket so quickly after high school, he had very little time to grow past his adolescent ways. Everything that happened in the extras was to give him the space he needed to find himself, the person who he is beneath the layers of spikes and bristles. With the discipline and rough love Nagano gave him, along with other stable relationships as well as the solving of the yakuza ties, Nishizaki didn't need to be on the defense all the time. This isn't a new aspect in Konohara's stories. There have been lots of characters who change for the worse when life becomes precarious, loss of work, home, family, they hit bottom to various degrees, and can't become better versions of themselves until their basic needs are met. Nishizaki falls under that category of character, and I think his arc was done justice with the space it was given.

That aside, the extras had me weeping with how utterly sweet it became when Nishizaki and Nagano found the courage to be happy together. My heart clenched at first with their trip to Nagano's mother's place. I never thought they'd get to where they got. The ending of their story, as far as we get to follow them, is one they deserve and one I enjoyed reading.

I was going to give this 4.5 stars, I loved reading this it was right up my alley tbh it reminded me of the feeling I got staying up to read harada's mangas years ago. But the "doujinshi sequel" kind of ruined it for me. It was fine right before the cafe part. While yes, I was unsatisfied with the ending and wanted to see a redemption for Nishizaki, I didn't expect it to be so OOC and abrupt. Like all the characters got so soft, even Kitao and the... more>> train guy. Ik there was a 2 year time skip but Nishizaki's 180 was kinda crazy lol. I also wish the stuff in HS was addressed, like how Nishizaki was just dating Nagano as a prank at first and how he walked into Nishizaki and his friends talking. I also don't see what Nagano sees in MC but I've also become obsessed with rude ppl just bc of their face so I cant say anything...

Anyways I'm happy they're happy at least. Just wish the sequel had more depth. <<less
